PM to join Stars Fall And Suns Rise (Skyard)

Kavala has an early morning meeting with a stranger on the beach.

(This is a thread from Mizahar's fantasy role playing forum. Why don't you register today? This message is not shown when you are logged in. Come roleplay with us, it's fun!)

Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

She was restless. Sleep had eluded her lately moreso than rest had found her so Kavala began to spend odd hours wandering the grounds of her home or ranging further out afield to get something done or work off nervous energy. She'd read most of the books she owned and knew the weather would soon be keeping her indoors completely. But for now, the crisp fall night wasn't unbearable and the cycles of the tides had put the sea far off shore between late late at night and early morning, leaving it the perfect opportunity to dig clams. Being Konti, Kavala often indulged in seafood of all types.

Clams, however, were among her favorites. She'd brought all the equipment with her; a mesh basket, a rake, a small shovel, and a clam tube. The basket would hold the neatly raked up or tubed clams nicely, not allowing them to escape, while the rake would help her capture steamer and butter clams. The tube was best for razor clams, which were Kavala's favorite. She'd try for all three, knowing it was a good time with the extremely low tides hitting.

But she was early when she arrived. The water was still going out and she laughed a little at herself knowing impatience wasn't exactly a virtue. So the Konti spent time gathering up firewood - pre-dried driftwood and flotsam on the beach - and piled it together so she could practice her survival techniques. She set her claming gear aside and picked the leeward side of a huge tree that had washed ashore last winter and used her shovel to dig out a depression sheltered from the wind. Trying to judge where the fire would reflect off the huge tree and give her the most heat was difficult, but after she'd decided - making the depression not so close as to catch the huge driftwood on fire - Kavala laid the foundations for a fire.

She carefully set out a pile of small sticks near at hand she could feed into the newly made fire and then in piled the depression with a small mound of tinder. She used shredded wood - the type already rotten though dry - and then shredded dried grass she'd pulled from the dunes near the cliff. Once the tinder was laid, she carefully took her flint and steel and began to strike the flint across the steel. Sparks flew, some dipping into the tinder, some flying wide. The Konti laughed at herself, though her laughter soon grew to frustration. It wasn't as easy as it looked, and certainly not out in the wind even though where she dug the pit was slightly sheltered.

She kept trying until her fingers got tired, the fire still not catching, and then drew res into her hands, cheating slightly.

Into the pooled res she willed fire, and then in turn dumped the fire over the tinder to catch it. Once the dried grasses were burning, she fed small twigs and small chunks of driftwood into the fire until the tinder and the small fuels were burning. Then she added larger pieces and sat back admiring how she piled them in a sort of A shape in the center so lots of air could flow around them and burn. Once the fire was roaring, Kavala sat back, brushed off her hands, and checked the progress of the tide. It was only a quarter of the way out. When the tide was halfway out she'd start her claming. That way she could safely hunt until it was all the way out and backtrack with the water creeping back in.

Until then, there was nothing to do but sit back and relax, enjoying the warmth of the fire.

Under normal circumstances Skyard would’ve absolutely refused to be awake at this bell. He absolutely hated mornings; especially early mornings. Yet, he realized just how beautiful and scenic this city tended to be and didn’t mind in the least bit. A massive yawn escaped his lips, and he immediately looked about only to realize that it’d still been somewhat dark; despite the time of day it had been. He stood upon his feet and shook himself about from left to right; in an attempt to remove all of the sand in his hide. He caught scent of something in the air and it smelled as if it were burning. His paws impacted the sand beneath him, and he felt the awkwardly soft ground as he moved about. The Kelvic disliked every bit of this strange sandy shore he’d been present on, and he searched eagerly for whatever had been burning. Skyard pointed his snout toward the heavens and inhaled in order to fill his lungs to capacity.

He realized rather swiftly that he was not far off from wherever that scent came from, and he followed his nostrils all the way up until he saw a flame. A flame that danced and curled about; it had been very clearly visible at a rather short distance. Alongside the flame he saw a figure, but he had no clue rather or not the figure had been male or female. He simply sat and observed at a distance of mere meters, although he hadn’t had much cover to hid behind he attempted to be stealthy.

The kelvic lowered its posture, and he rested his gut upon the sand whilst he outstretched his forepaws and hind legs. He laid them flat upon the ground and his white mane fluttered about amidst the gentle breeze. Skyard simply watched as he crept closer, inch by inch and attempted to remain unseen. He didn’t want to startle whoever had been the silhouetted figure for now. He would await the perfect opportunity to let himself be known, and for now he figured that would be incredibly dangerous. He knew nothing about the individual, nor did he know rather or not the person could’ve been armed.

For a split-tick he thought to himself about rather or not he had been wrong, and what if she were friendly? Skyard allowed his impulsive side to get the better of him in this case, because rather than remain hidden he charged. He sprang forward from his “prone” position and stopped himself short.

He lowered his back and sat upon his rump as he raised himself upward flaunting his chest on his paws. He opened his maw, and revealed the large oyster-white teeth within; before he filled his lungs to capacity.

Suddenly he pushed out the massive inhalation of air and tightened the muscles in his throat to release an incredibly loud roar. The cerulean-colored iris of his eye set sight upon the figure once more. Had he done what he intended to do which was catch the attention of the person, or had he done the opposite? Had he startled the person rather than alert them of his presence?

Kavala was drifting in the peace of the crackling fire and the almost meditative state of waiting for the tide to drift outwards. She didn’t have her senses open, searching for predators or threats. Instead she was firmly in her safe zone, before her cliffside fortress, with nothing on her mind but the harvest of clams. Part of it was the fact that with The Sanctuary looming above like a beast perched on the cliff ready to pounce on the beach below she felt infinitely safe. Inherently, she knew she wasn’t. But that didn’t stop her from the sense of security she’d built around the facility infusing her with an attitude that nothing could penetrate it.

Clams. After all, no one died waiting for the tide to go out to harvest clams, right? So when the lions roar came Kavala’s eyes snapped open and she found herself already on her feet. At first she wondered if the Menagerie was missing an animal or more than one, but as her senses opened she got a clear feel of a Kelvic curious, nervous, and wary standing uncertainly upwind. The Konti bent low and picked up her double edged longsword that was gently propped on the log near the fire by her clamming gear. She hadn’t left it at home. Thankfully.

The Konti freed the blades from the sheaths and walked forward. She kept the length of weapon at rest on her shoulder though she was ready to swing it up into a defensive stance at any moment. Her bare feet left tracks on the fresh windswept sand as she paced forward. The Konti really dug deep and searched for aggression in the kelvic as she walked towards him, knowing she’d stop when she sensed either that or true fear if the kelvic felt such things.

The light was still dim so Kavala concentrated. Djed flashed to her eyes and she altered her pupils as she’d practiced. Within moments the djed carefully transformed flesh and built second eyelids that she flicked back much like the Akalak did and flooded her sight with Infravision. The Kelvic came into focus in the dim light and she studied his features. Young. Strong. His body was corded with feline muscle and he had a mane that made him look mature. She watched his tail, noting if it was flicking angrily or calm. Almost anything could be told about a cat, especially a big cat, watching its tail. The Konti paced closer, not afraid, but not stupidly unconcerned either.

“I’m all alone here, Kelvic. I know you’re a kelvic. I can feel your emotions. I run the healing clinic for kelvics and animals on top of this cliff. I’m not here to hurt you or threaten you in any way. I will defend myself though. I promise you that. I’m just down here waiting for the tide to go out to hunt some clams. Do you like clams? They are delicious if you’ve never had them. I’d be glad to share or to teach you how to find them.” The Konti said in a soft easy voice. She truthfully didn’t want any trouble but she had a feeling the situation might not be as simple as it appeared.

The Konti turned, posture at ease, and glanced to where the sun would soon be rising. She was relaxed and seemed to be judging the tide. “Clams are out in the wet sand and the intertidal zone once the water retreats. That’s the best time to gather them. But it often takes time for the tide to go out. Some company would be really good. I have a nice warm fire over there sheltered by the driftwood logs. It’s out of the wind and I would be glad for the company. Do you want to come sit and wait with me for a while?” The Healer said, reaching up with her free hand to brush loose strands of flowing white hair out of her eyes and pull a strand from her lips where it had got lodged as she spoke.

Stars Fall And Suns Rise (Skyard)

Skyard knew from the moment she moved that he disturbed the once peaceful atmosphere that she created for herself. She seemed to have enjoyed the quiet and rather dim light combined with the warmth generated by the beautiful flame. He watched as the woman uplifted an object from the ground and could do no more than observe her as she’d done so. The dim-light and long hair that wove about slightly as gossamer thin strands fell in place made him realize that she was a female. Skyard had not a single shred of concern with rather or not he would be attacked with whatever large object she held. However, what he did fear was being rejected by the woman and simply pushed away as she paced toward him. Skyards rump remained upon the ground and he simply sat there and waited for what she would do next. Despite the day being incredibly young and having a lackluster amount of light he wasn’t difficult to catch sight of with his white coat.

His tail curled around the circumference of his lower hind-leg and tightened a bit as he sat there and uplifted his cranium to get a better look at her visage. Perplexed with the womans look already; she spoke to him and told him that she knew of his true identity. She somehow knew that he most certainly wasn’t a typical Lion; she knew that he was a Kelvic. She told him about how she would be prepared to defend herself, and all that he did in response to her was bowing his head. He didn’t want to offend her in any way shape or form; he had no intention to attack the woman nor was he interested in violence at the moment. He was incredibly hungry, and hadn’t eaten in several days; starved and almost delirious had been his mental state.

Skyard approached her with his head lowered, and he immediately placed his large paw upon the womans foot in order to let her know that he listened to her. She beckoned him with food, and immediately his attention had been full on; he wanted to be submissive presently. Large felines tended to show their emotion with their tails and bodily language; whilst he placed a paw on her foot briefly he shook his mane, and brushed the side of his hide against the womans leg. Despite the fact that he hadn’t known her he knew how to give affection and show great thanks to darn near anyone that offered him anything in his time of need.

She explained that Clams are out in the wet sand, and she said something about an intertidal zone which he knew nothing about. However he was most certainly willing to learn and although in his present form he lacked the proper vocal cordage to speak to her. He nudged the womans shin with his snout; in order to let her know that he was most certainly willing to sit with her. He hoped that she would understand the messages he attempted to convey by making use of his body. Although even if she didn’t understand she might’ve gotten the message through the use of his affection and kind actions.

He let out yet another brief roar that wasn’t quite as loud as the first one, but one that was low and guttural in order to “Speak” to her. He looked up at her once again before he would move his paw away from the womans foot in fear of being a nuisance. After all if he intended to make a friend today he may as well give her all of the attention in the world. He wanted to show her that he could be caring and incredibly nice; if so she may show him a bit of favor, and become his friend.
