A Gift of Warmth

28th Day of Fall 515 AV
It was cold, far coolder than was usual for the early fall in the city. They were well enough prepared, Naiya had donned her blue cloak, her gift from the magic chest last season. The others had clothing too, Shahar had a cloak and a vest, Seirei had a simple cloak of her own. They would be alright, but Naiya still worried, and she wanted to make sure they had plenty. So she had picked up cloth and now she would put it to work. Her own cloak was light, the silk warm enough for now, but it wouldn't last long if they caught storms or snow.

She pulled out the velvet she had brought only a few days ago, first the blue, laid out and marked along the inside. She squared off the length first, saving an extra yard aside before removing and folding the extra yards before storing them back with the rest of the whole cloth. She took her chalk from the sewing kit and rounded off the bottom edge, the short dash like strokes connecting into a soft curved line. She did the same in the top corner, dashing out the second smaller curve that would encircle the neck. Her first mark was misaligned when she stood up to check her work, curving up too far. She rubbed the chalk away, redrawing the line of the bottom hem and checking it once more from a distance.

She had to adjust it twice more before she had it right, buffing out the line each time before adding it back. Once it was correct, she cut the excess material free, setting it aside for later. Then she shaped the round of what would be the hood, the extra yard from before forming the two sides as she chalked them into shape as well. She cut them free and laid them beside one another.

Next she pulled out her stores of wool and linen, chalking them and cutting them both, the linen an inch shorter than the velvet, and the wool only a centimeter shorter than the rest. She did the same for the hood, cutting shorter lengths of both of the other materials as well. She laid the cloth all together, stacking the fabric so that the wool was sandwiched in the middle between the linen and the velvet.

Next she pulled a needle and thread, finding one that was a pale gray and medium gauge. She pinched the seam of the cloth, catching all three layers, and began to stitch the sides together. The color of the velvet in the light, where the thread would fall, was a silvery gray. The rest of the cloth was a pale blue-gray, that would compliment the color of Seirei's eyes. She hoped it would compliment the woman well.
