Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[The Orchards] Wretched Indeed

22nd Day of Winter, 515 AV

It was a warm night for winter. Bare branches stood darkly against the navy sky, outlined by the diffuse glow of the moon. Thick froths of cloud crowded the horizon; as a consequence, the gentle light faded in and out as they passed. The path was dirt and vaguely lit, carrying on through the endless rows of the Orchards ad nauseum, until along came the the exit.

Eosi wandered the graveyard of trees in abstraction. She felt out of her element without sunshine, unable to see as she was so accustomed. Despite this, the bleak and barren path was suitable. It was about as empty as she felt. There were so many conflicting thoughts and feelings whirling around in her head. Only such a remote place at such an unlikely time could give her the space she needed to really think about the direction her life was heading and what it was that Ivak had in store.

Tonight she would walk in good faith. Quietly, she said a prayer for Leth's protection.

To the observer, she was all afire. As compared to Eosi, the dim landscape was a sharp contrast. Her mane of wild curls billowed in the breeze. She rounded the corner briskly, only to stop short for a moment, confused by what she was seeing. Was there a young girl on the path just ahead? Her eyes narrowed.

That couldn't be. It was past the midnight bell. There rightly shouldn't be a living soul to be found. Little did she know this was half-true. The young girl in question was not living, though she was more than certainly found. Cautiously, Eosi ducked into an alcove between trees to spy on the girl, with the hopes of gleaning her purpose.

It was good perhaps, to feel the weight of her bow slung over her shoulder.

It wasn't so odd really. Evalin often took walks about the night, in one form or another as she traveled giving little care to the world around her. Tonight was no different. The winter had come just as it always did, putting all the world into a deep slumber as the wind blew with a chill from the northern parts of the land. The Immortal had always enjoyed such a time a year as this. Things became... quiet, and the children of the current era were not quite so noisy. Barefoot as she was Evalin could feel the crisp cold of the ground beneath her toes, the very earth crunching under foot as watery dew that had collected upon blades of grass began to freeze and harden the blades.

The moon was fool, and absently Evalin wondered if, perhaps, its patron god was watching her even as she stood leaning against the tree that slept quietly on the hillside. A sudden breeze blew past, whipping back locks of raven hair that fell past her waist, and with one hand Evalin caught the simple green dress before its skirts blew too high of its own accord. Glancing down at her apron the Nuit once more wondered if she should purchase something more... suitable. There was rarely a need of course, but given the last few seasons events the Immortal had taken quite a liking to the various fashions and types of apparel that could be found in Riverall.

One hand went to the icy blue gem that hung from a silver chain around her pale neck, black nails lingering against its surface as she continued to stare out over the waters.

There is an odd beauty in times such as this. Evalin said within her mind, the thought directed toward Tsenrika, The calmness that darkness brings is quite enjoyable.

The chill of the season is more desirable I believe.

Evalin smiled and closed her eyes, Do your kind not have a concept of beauty on your world?

The Irylid thought for a tick, Evalin could sense the subtle workings of his meticulous mind as he processed an answer, We do.

Evalin waited a tick or two, patiently for an answer, but when none came she opened her eyes and looked back out to the shifting waters of the Suvan Sea, Its beautiful, but many things that are rotten to the core are quite beautiful on the outside.

As my master says.

Evalin had only returned to Riverfall the day before, much to Gresshal's annoyance and Vino's displeasure. It always was entertaining to pick at their insecurities when she was near. A tool should always be well prepared and ready for whatever was to occur, so it did them good to be surprised by her actions every now and then.

The Immortal did not notice as the other woman approached, engrossed as she was by her own inner monologue. She simply stared out at the moon and sky, red eyes searching the depths of the expanse, as if she expected to find some answer there.

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

The whole encounter felt surreal. Here she was in the darkness, bow slung over her shoulder, watching some strange girl from afar. There wasn't a living soul in sight other than the two of them. Eosi felt as if she were in a waking dream. She could hear the slightly elevated rhythm of her own heartbeat. As if searching she upturned both hands, eyes tracing the lines of her palms. This was real, wasn't it?

The stranger merely stood unmoving, fixated on something in the distance.

Suddenly wary, she moved to grip her bow tighter. Given the setting, she half expected this young girl to turn and shift into some sort of abomination. Which on the whole was a silly notion. But more and more the city was beginning to remind her of Alvadas. While she certainly thought she had a legitimate purpose for coming to the Orchard, suddenly she began to question her reality.

Further, watching someone in that way made her feel like a voyeur. Her cheeks flamed. Eosi couldn't abide it. Slowly she stepped out into the path behind her, a few yards away. It would more than likely startle the girl, so she cleared her throat softly as she approached, each step measured and careful. After, there was only the sound of her boots and the otherwise oppressive stillness of the vespertine hour.

"Hail," she said quietly but clearly. There'd be no way to miss the sound. Her speech still retained most of the mellifluous formality of the Denvali. Given her in the overall, it wasn't hard to discern that she was a stranger to this area, though the weapon in her hands could possibly convince one otherwise.

"I apologize for the intrusion," she began, "but I happened upon you by chance." She was polite but there was a hardness in her eyes, as always. She was a woman to gave respect, but not an inch more.

Breath billowed gently from her nose against the bitter cold. In combination with her molten hair, it gave the impression of a living flame. Eosi was hyperaware of the quiver strapped to her back, ready to draw in the space of a heartbeat.

"I am Eosi." She said, offering nothing further.

Ticks went by, and Evalin gave no thought to their passing, engrossed as she was in the simple quiet of her standing and wakeful meditation. Time, more and more, was showing itself to be just an illusion developed by those who did not have enough of it. The voice was at first ignored, but after a time Evalin pulled her eyes away from the scene to look back over her shoulder.

A woman.

Yes, quite observant my dear Tsenrika.

The immortal turned to face the woman, Eosi as she so named herself. First those crimson points would course over the woman's hair, shockingly red that stood out despite the darkness, before moving down over her form. Her gaze only brushed the weapon slung casually over one shoulder, paying it no mind beyond passing curiosity.

"Eosi..." Evalin whispered, playing with the odd sound of the name, the way it left her lips making her smile and laugh, "What a strange name."

An Inarta perhaps?

Perhaps...? Evalin was not sure. The time she had spent in Wind Reach had been brief, and uninteresting. True this woman did have red hair, and carried a bow, but her eyes were not that interesting a color the nuit had come to expect from the race of firey haired mortals.

Tilting her head Evalin clasped her hands over her waist, staring without blinking as her mind drifted to further musings. It took a moment or two before Evalin realized that, perhaps, the woman had been perusing conversation.

"Evalin." the nuit returned with a very slight curtsy, dipping down without lowering her gaze, "A pleasure."

The sound of her name as it fell off Evalin's lips sent a chill rolling down her spine. Eosi felt her jaw tighten. Now that she could look at the girl in earnest, there was something distinctly wrong. There wasn't any specific detail visible that might give her that impression. But rather, it was a feeling she got. Which was not typical for her.

Further, it was all too easy to forget about the recent endowment of her gift. Evalin would experience a hypnotic compulsion to express whatever emotions she had most recently. It was as if Eosi were a lightning rod, amplifying the feelings of those around her. The thick aura of sensation came off her in waves. It wasn't impossible to ignore, but given their proximity to one another the urge would more than certainly felt.

"Same to you," Eosi replied without breaking her gaze. The fact that Evalin had chosen to retain eye contact was enough. The stillness of the night bore down around them as the two women stood in their own private sphere of the world. The wan rays of the moon broke through the clouds for a brief moment, catching both within the purview of its light.

"What brings you to the Orchards at so late an hour?" She asked. It wasn't any of her business, but it was difficult to know what else she might inquire about. Theirs was already an unlikely encounter. There was no use in breaking the girl from her reverie if she did not in the very least intend to speak with her.

But what was it that she wanted, exactly? The woman shifted uncomfortably. What had brought them both here?
