Pots and Pans

21st Winter 515

The order from yesterday remained scrunched in her pocket until Thegans finally reminded her about it, asking if she had seen it. Thanking him, the blacksmith pulled it out, smoothing it out on the kitchen table. "Two pans," it read, "And one large cooking pot."

Not a hard task at all, apart from one thing - to make the pans, she needed sheet metal, and there was none large enough to be found in her store. The thinnest was still much thicker than required, meaning that she had to make the metal thin herself - a day, at least, of back breaking work just to make some pots and pans.

Rals had told her how to do this, so long ago she barely remembered. Take two iron plates, it was, placing the metal in between and pounding hard with a sledge hammer. Thankfully, she did have these plates, and placed them in her forge with the metal in between. There was a sledge hammer too, coming with the forge, and Alija pushed herself to lift it. She could hoist it up fairly easily now, feeling her muscles tense a little with the weight, but soon enough, it would hurt.

Thegans stood beside her with a smile on her face, not even waiting for her to start before mocking her. "That looks heavy, now doesn't it?" he teased, resting against one wall to watch her, "I'm glad I don't have to do that!"

Alija shot him a cold stare, before yanking the hammer back over her shoulder and letting it fall down, using the strength of the earth rather than her own. That would be better used fighting against the forces that pulled it down, yanking the heavy hammer back up. Muscles strained at every move, feeling the burn down her back and in her arms.

Every hit sounded through the forge, the ringing of metal loud and annoying, but not as annoying as Thegans' smug smile as he stared at her as she worked. He got off without a single piece of work, fully surviving of Alija's own. Not that she wanted him to work for her, but he insisted that she paid him the full price for his efforts. Which meant more than she could spend. Considering that it was cheaper just to pay his living expenses, and get the occasional odd job done from him, she left it like that.

Her father, on the other hand, had offered to help free of charge. That, however, couldn't be done because he could easily be seen by the public. Instead, he was stuck up in the house, avoiding windows and going stir crazy, all because of his sister-in-law. She felt sorry for him, she really did. Instead, he was stuck trying to cope with it all, writing and sketching away in his bedroom, things he would never let anyone see.

Apart from occasionally showing Thegans, which truly annoyed her. After all, she was his daughter. Surely she got some sort of involvement too?

Alija stopped her thoughts, realising that she had also stopped working while she was thinking. Heaving the hammer back up, she let it smash back down, denting the plate as well as flattening the metal in between. Muscles worked hard, fire burning within them, as she paced her breath, inhaling as she brought the hammer up and exhaling as she smashed it back down again.

Bells passed of painful work, now each move killing her. Her arms had gone weak, trembling with exhaustion, and she could barely hold herself upright, let alone the heavy hammer. The sheet was nowhere near done either, for she worked slowly due to lack of strength.

Taking a break, she hurried back upstairs to have a drink of water. It was cool and fresh in her mouth, soothing her thirst. Sweat dripped off her, soaking through her clothes and her whole body had heated up through the work, hot to the touch.

And it was barely midday, so much work left to do. Alija didn't think she could cope, but had to, for she didn't want to go through this same torture tomorrow. To do this again would be excruciating. Returning now was hard, but to start again the next day...

She didn't want to think about it. Alija was a strong blacksmith, surely pounding metal like this was nothing compared to all the pounding metal she did on a daily basis. Sure, there it wasn't as long, and the hammer wasn't as large, and most of it was small, delicate taps, but it gave her inspiration to continue. She could do this.

Returning to her position, Alija pulled the hammer up, beginning once more on the tiring process of bringing the hammer up and letting it fall down, denting the metal plates and hopefully flattening the metal into a thinner sheet. It was hard, painful work, but she was used to that.

One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. She counted each blow, trying to think of a way to make the time pass quicker. Heave up, swing down, heave up, swing down. One, two, three, four. Hammer hard, hammer away. Hammer very hard, hammer often. Make the process quick, make it easier.

A deep low chuckle came from the side of the room, Alija looking up to find Thegans still watching her.

She growled, rolling her eyes. She moved the hammer up, before letting it fall down, watching Thegans as if to say that he would be at the other side of the hammer if he didn't stop annoying her.

Thegans laughed again, "You do realise you could have hired someone to do that for you, paid for a slave from the Flaxen District?"

She thought about it hard, feeling her muscles shake as she neared the end of the work. By now, it was too late to consider it, but even these simple thoughts revealed to her that his suggestion was a good one. She revealed this to him as she place her last blows, happy with the results. She even had a few hours to spare, to visit the Bathouse and Spa in to get a massage to sooth her aching back.

"You see, Thegans, hiring a slave costs about 10, 15 Laats. The price of the pots and pan is much lower than that. It really wasn't worth it. A little bit of more work so I can actually get a profit on something is a good thing."

He frowned, his teasing ending. "Well, I'm off to dinner. Goodnight!"

The following day, Alija woke early, body sore from the work yesterday. They had always said that muscles felt it the day after, but it was only now that she understood what they mean, feeling a sharp aching in all her muscles. She was quick to dress and eat her breakfast, heading straight down to the smithy to get the work finished. After all, whoever had placed the order had requested the items to be finished by tomorrow. It was a tough deadline, but Alija was prepared to work through the night to make it.

Thankfully, her work today was what she preferred, actually crafting something rather than simple pounding at a chunk of metal to get it flat. She was just about to leave the kitchen when she thought of a good idea. Using a bowl as a template would allow her to shape the metal around it. That would allow a much smoother and better shaped pan, much better for what she wanted.

The blacksmith searched through the pantry for it, finding the large bowl that came with the kitchen. She hurried downstairs, placing it beside the anvil as she took the sheet metal, ready to cut it into three equal pieces. Taking a ruler and some chalk, she placed it on the metal, measuring out the length. Divide by three.

A quick bit of calculations later and she marked out two lines, separating each piece that would go to a separate object. Alija heated along the first of these lines, before lining it up with the edge of her anvil. Taking a chisel, she tried to cut straight through, before borrowing an axe from the ones on display next door. This cut through the metal easier, leaving her with three equal size pieces.

She left the saw in the forge in case she needed it later on, putting two of the sheets beside it. The last she took, starting to bend it around the bowl. At first all she did was hammer down at it, watching as the metal bent and deformed around the bowl.

It formed ridges and bumps where it bent, as well as a rough surface at the base. Still, Alija didn't care about that, using the bowl as a main template first to get the basic shape. After that was completed, she would move on to working on the details.

She continued to shape it, until the smith was finally satisfied with her work. Then, she hammered flat down on the ridges, watching as the metal drew out into a much smoother surface. With angled blows, Alija moved the metal around, down to where the bowl sat on the anvil, to make that edge smooth.

The metal did as she asked, forming the bowl shape perfectly. Alija felt a smile rise, glad at her work. She hammered with small taps, but the metal moved easily, shifting and changing until it was just right. The bumps and ridges had all been drawn out, hammered so the metal made the dips in between thicker and the ridges thinner. Perfect.

But of course, a pan wasn't a bowl shape, so Alija slid it off the bowl, tugging when the metal caught. It slipped off without too much trouble, though, leaving Alija to discard the bowl and focus just on the pan. She placed it against the flat face of the anvil, beginning to hammer down while trying to not distort the shape she had worked so hard to make. The base started to flatten against the face, exactly like she wanted.

The blacksmith continued to shape the metal, now using the anvil as her guide. She moved the metal out, flattening and curving it the best she could. Spare metal built up where the base met the "walls", but it wasn't too much, only the slightest of bumps.

The pan turned out nicely, perfectly circular with a nice curve for the walls. Alija smiled, knowing there was only one thing left to do for it. The pan needed a handle, for which she had prepared a long metal rod, perfect for the job.

First, she heated and shaped the rod, pulling the end out to a slight bend around the horn of the anvil. Then she worked on the other end to make it ready for welding. She made it into a point, so the flux would be pushed out when joined, then heated it, taking it out every so often to pass over it with a metal brush.

Flakes of metal danced across the forge floor, the newest white hot and the oldest dull greys. They made pretty patterns across it, but Alija didn't stop to look. Instead, she applied the coarse sand, taking both the pan and the rod into the dying flame. They joined, metal welding together, the heat incredibly intense. She had no free hands to use a wire to check the heat, nor did she want to use auristics.

Last time, it had been incredibly dangerous. A forge was already dangerous, so was the magic. Brining the two together again would be a bad idea. Last time would be the last time. She didn't want a repeat of those events, and she most certainly did not want to have something even worse happen.

Instead, she relied on natural instinct, training her eyes through the flames to try see the metal. Thankfully, she had welded enough times to do it naturally, bringing the metal out just at the right temperature. Quickly, she placed it in a vice, hammering the handle down to join it properly. The metal sealed, adjusting into place.

Alija smiled at her work once again, taking it once the metal had cooled. Testing the handle, she tried to break it off with a little pressure, but it stayed firm, unmoving. Just like she wanted it.

One final finishing touch. Thegans had decided to be nice, fetching her some scraps of leather. She bound these around the end of the handle, creating a section where one could hold the pan without burning themselves on the hot metal. Taking a needle, she threaded it carefully, surprised at how naturally the delicate action came. So unlike blacksmithing, which often needed force.

Then again, with more detailed things, she had to be just as delicate.

She tied a knot at the end of the string, beginning to pass it through the leather. It was stiff and thick, taking several attempts to force it through the material, but a few tugs assured her that it was firm. Alija yanked the end of the leather round, just meeting the other one. She pulled the string between the two, pressing the needle against the metal handle to help pull it through the leather.

Finally, the ends were joined, securing the leather in place. Alija added a few more stitches, before passing the needle through them and making a knot, securing the string as well. She broke it off a little distance from the knot. The threaded showed, messy stitches clear, but it wouldn't matter. It was something she had added for free, anyway.

Pots and Pans

Alija made another pan like that, in the same fashion, only making it slightly smaller, as requested. Then came the cooking pot, which she planned to do in a similar style.

She began once more shaping the metal over the bowl, pulling the metal down and around and drawing out the ridges with sharp taps of the hammer. That was done quickly, which allowed her to remove the bowl. A cooking pot, unlike the pan, could have the curved base this metal did, so she focused her attentions to the top part, wanting to form a neck and rim.

Alija heated up the top part of the metal, curving it in around the horn of the anvil. She placed the metal against it, hammering down to make the metal bend inwards and create a slight indent.

She spun the hammer round in her hand, striking in the right place to manipulate the metal. The pot moved around the horn, shaped to the desired shape. She hit the metal with the corner of the hammer, curving it round to make the ridge smooth, and no longer sharp.

Lastly, she had to add the handles, but then she would be done. She drew out the metal at near the edge, forcing it out further until it started to become thinner in the middle and thicker at the sides. Eventually, she managed to make the handle. She repeated it at the other side. Finally it was all done. "Thegans! I'm putting you in charge of selling this!"
