The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

Turning Failures Into Wisdom

The sun anchored itself in the sky, beating down upon the people of Endrykas with a scorching rhythm. Many Drykas were bustling to and fro, bringing water for the members of their Pavilion and their animals, as the temperatures seemed to keep climbing, the further the sun rose in the sky. Caesi, Nu, and Py were heading out to hunt and fish since it was such a warm day, Caesi assumed even animals would be going to the rivers and watering holes to cool down or to quench their thirst. The huntress hummed a tune to herself, as she gathered her belongings for the day ahead of her. Grabbing her hunting arrows, she placed them in her quiver, then put the quiver across her back. Grabbing her fishing tackle, fishing pole, backpack, and shortbow she whistled to Nu. Caesi stepped out of her tent, heading towards Py her Strider when the dog finally decided to follow her command.

Placing her gear in the Yvas bags, she began to mount Py. She slipped and almost fell, but attempted it again and mounted her. Wiggling she adjusted herself on her Strider to get herself more comfortable. The fishing pole was sticking out of the Yvas bags, so she adjusted it so the pole would not hit the horse in the face. Clicking her tongue she urged Py into a fast trot, turning over her shoulder to command Nu to follow. The dog, however, had already began to follow. Caesi smiled shaking her head, as she urged the horse to go faster.

The feel of the wind rushing through her hair, caressing her skin, was pleasing. With the sun beating down upon her, the rush of the wind cooled her. She stroked Py as they rode towards the Moresta River, almost slipping she tightened her knees to keep steady. She tilted to the left, digging in her knees slightly, Py shifted towards the left understanding her rider. Nu followed, tongue out as he ran, looking like he was enjoying stretching out his legs.

As they neared the river, Caesi leaned back whistling low to her Strider, letting her know to slow down. The horse slowed and halted, Nu catching up to them. Caesi grabbed her shortbow, scanning the area up ahead. Surely there will be something.. the Huntress thought to herself, as she dismounted from Py. Patting the horse softly she made a soft cooing noise, before telling her to stay. Adjusting her quiver at her back, she motioned to Nu to come. The dog however, decided sniffing the ground was a better idea. Caesi growled softly, stomping over to Nu to see what was so much more important.

“What is so special?” Caesi asked a bit irritated, making the dogs ears go back. Nu took a step back sitting down, waiting for her to see what he was sniffing at patiently. Caesi frowned at his behavior as she made her way to the dog. Peering down at the ground, there was animal feces upon the ground. She was a little shocked, to say the least, as the dog rarely helped her with hunting as he was still being trained. She stood there for a moment in shock, then looked over at Nu who looked smug. “Good boy!” Caesi said excitedly, reaching over and rustling his fur, praising him. “Someone is getting a treat.” She said with a smile and chuckle, petting him, making his leg thump up and down as she hit his favorite spot, “Good boy Nu.” Caesi praised again laughing.

Turning back to the animal feces she squatted down. The scat was lumpy, round pellets. She reached down feeling the scat to see how fresh it was. The scat was still moist so the animal had to be nearby. She scanned the area to see if there were any more droppings, when she saw none she knew the animal was not in a herd. Maybe there will be tracks.. Caesi thought, searching the area thoroughly near the droppings. Not too far from the droppings were a set of tracks. The bottom was rounded while the tips were in a slight point, the front tracks appeared larger then the back. The hind feet were close to the front, the tracks going in a diagonal.

“Deer?” Caesi asked herself aloud, frowning slightly in thought. Looking in the direction the tracks were headed, the River, she gave a nod. “Let's find out.” Caesi said looking at Nu patting his head softly. Shouldering her backpack, she patted Py, “I will call for you.” Caesi promised the Strider, who nickered softly. Caesi pulled an arrow from her quiver, and started walking towards the River. She bent her knees and crouched down low, trying to stay hidden from the possible deer ahead. Rolling her feet slightly, she eliminated some of the noise she made walking. Casting a glance at Nu, the dog was crouched low on the ground as well, with his head low and ready. Caesi smiled, turning her attention back ahead of her. When she was near the river, Caesi went down even lower, walking slowly, using the tall grass as cover. The Moresta River came into view, so Caesi halted. Gripping her arrow, she observed the area before her.

The river was lulling as it flowed smoothly, the water glistening like a jewel from Semele. Trees lined the river, full of greenery and life near the water source. Birds sang in the trees to one another, a duck or two swam down the river out of sight. Standing proudly was a deer. The brown coat appeared supple and shiny, the underneath white, no antlers adorned her head. The cautious animal peered around her, ears twitching for any noise. When she felt it was safe she bent her neck to drink some water. She only stayed like that for a moment before she brought her head back up, looking around her once again. The deer was cautious, which would make it more difficult to sneak up on her. Caesi chewed on her lower lip.

When the deer went back down for another drink Caesi moved silently to the tree line, keeping in the shadows and behind a trunk with her back against the rough back she inhaled and exhaled slowly, keeping the noise to a minimum the best she could. The deer must of heard her, since she jerked her head up, turning it slightly to the left and right, scanning the area. The doe was alert now, shifting on it's hooves restlessly, looking at the water then out to the plains, debating which she should do. Caesi brought the arrow up, biting down on her bottom lip, she peered over at Nu who was still in the tall grass. She bent her fingers, signing to the dog Distract. Nu tilted his head to the side, not understanding. Caesi rolled her eyes and looked over at the doe from the shadows. She still did not move, nor was she drinking water.

Caesi waited patiently, the waiting part of the hunt was always the hardest. It was the animals turn to move in this game of two. Once the doe made her move, Caesi would react accordingly. Nu stayed in the tall grass, being quiet thankfully, staring down the doe by the river's edge. After ten chimes passed by, the doe finally bent her head for another drink of the cool water. Caesi sent a thank-you up, as she nocked her arrow.

She moved slowly from the shadow, once out of the shadows she would not have much time to loose the arrow at the doe, her muscles tightened slightly in anticipation. As she was out of the shadows she wasted no time, she aimed at the neck and let the arrow loose at the deer. Once it was sailing through the air, she grabbed another arrow from the quiver, nocking it she saw the deer rear and buck.

It was hard to aim so she was not as quick as before as she squinted one eye, following the doe's movements as she kicked at the air. Nu came out of the tall grass he was in and ran towards the deer to provide a distraction, barking at the doe. Caesi aimed and let the arrow loose at the doe, it did not hit the neck as she intended but instead it went into the thigh of the doe's back leg. She had no time to think about the missed mark, instead she grabbed another arrow from the quiver, nocking it she aimed as the deer started to try an run, but the arrow in the leg prevented it from going too far fast, plus Nu kept it busy with his intimidating growls, showing of teeth and barks.

Thanks to Nu, Caesi had a little more time to aim. She inhaled and exhaled, aiming for the deer's neck she let the arrow loose once more. Hitting the doe right in the throat it fell down on the ground trying to get back up it kicked around, still fighting to survive.

A part of Caesi felt bad for the animal, but she could not let it hinder her task. Opening her backpack, she grabbed her dagger out and approached the deer, “I am sorry..” She said softly as she bent down to the deer, fear dancing in it's bulging eyes, knowing the end was coming. Caesi closed her eyes, then opened them, bringing the dagger to the deer's throat she put pressure to the handle, the metal entering the deer's flesh with an audible sucking noise. Pushing in a little more she brought her other hand to the handle to bring the blade across the doe's throat, ending her suffering and pain. Blood pooled onto Semele's skin, as Caesi sent a thanks to both Semele and Caiyha for the deer. The light of life dwindled from the deer's eyes until they were finally lifeless. Caesi's expression looked grim but she had a task to do.

Bringing her two fingers to her lips, she let out a loud and shrill whistle that seemed to echo out in the plains. Caesi waited a few ticks, until she saw Pyxis galloping towards her, Caesi gave a smile. The Strider slowed and came to a halt in front of Caesi, nuzzling her face. Caesi laughed stroking the beautiful horse, “Thatta girl.” Caesi whispered, scratching her behind the ears. After coddling the mare Caesi glanced down at the doe, giving a sigh the Huntress went back to the deer, dagger in hand. Rolling the deer onto her back Caesi went to her knees and started feeling around on the underside attempting to find the sternum. She pressed in on the deer's belly moving up until she felt the sternum underneath her hand. It was hard and thick, protruding only slightly from the deer.

Taking the dagger in her right hand she inserted the tip of the dagger into the hide. She had to push in slightly to penetrate it, but once the tip of the dagger was inside the deer, she moved it downwards making sure she did not apply too much pressure. If she pierced the guts, she would ruin the meat, so she worked carefully and slowly, dragging the dagger downwards towards the crotch region. Once the deer was cut open from sternum to crotch, it was time to get messy.

Inserting both of her hands at the crotch, she reached inside. It was a slimy and soft feeling as she gathered the guts from the deer, pulling them up out of the deer she removed her right hand and grabbed her dagger to slice at the pliable tissue like substance, that were attached to remove the innards completely. The Huntress continued pulling at the innards and slicing, until she came to the diaphragm. Letting out a breath and inhaling she cut the muscular dome-shaped part of the deer. Blood started pouring out after she did this, pooling on Semele's skin as she worked her way cutting at the diaphragm of the deer. Finally, she cut away the last of the membranes that was holding the guts inside, pulling the innards free of the deer.

Caesi laid her dagger down on the deer, gathering the guts she made her way to the river and dropped them in for the fish to eat. Dipping her hands in the cool water, she rinsed away the blood, clearing her nails of the entrails that were caught underneath, then returned to her dirty work.

Grabbing up her dagger once more, she began to cut the pelvic bone, then around the anus to pull the colon out of the body of the deer. Laying the insides down she reached in removing the heart, lungs and liver from the deer. Swiping the sweat from her brow, she forgot about the blood, and blood was smeared on her face. “Shyke..” Caesi cursed, letting out a frustrated breath as she returned to the river, she rinsed her hands and face. Nu let out a whimper at the organs she had left at the deer and Caesi smiled, “I did promise you a treat.” She told the dog, who perked up at her voice.

“Come.” Caesi commanded, the dog obeyed making her smile. “Good boy.” Caesi praised throwing him the organs from the deer carcass. The dog jumped up excitedly and barked his thanks as he snacked on his treats. Blood smearing on his muzzle as he devoured his treats for being such a big help to her.

Returning to the carcass she pulled it by it's hind legs to the edge of the river. Tilting it so the belly was now facing the river she submerged it, taking her hands and rinsing the inside of the deer out. She moved her hands inside and outside of the deer, washing away blood and debris from the carcass. Cleaning it up so the meat was not dirty. When she was finished she rolled the deer back on it's belly and let out a long breath, setting on a rock she straightened her spine. Her body was beginning to tire from all the work, but there was still more to this task to be finished.

Grabbing the front legs she dragged it on it's back to a nearby tree. Going to her backpack she pulled out some rope and returned to the deer. Taking the rope she brought one end to the center, looping it around she made a knot forming a noose out of the rope. Sliding the noose over the hind legs of the deer she pulled tightly, securing the rope. Looking upwards, she spotted a tree branch that was hanging low, but still high enough that the deer would not touch the ground. Throwing the other end of the rope over the tree branch she pulled.

It was difficult lifting the deer by herself, so she whistled to Py who walked forward. Caesi looped the rope on her Yvas, then mounted her Strider. Holding the rope in one hand she clicked her tongue and the horse started walking towards the edge of the River. Once they were near a big rock, the Huntress dismounted and peered over at the deer. The deer was up now in the tree, at eye level so she could finish her work. Petting Py, she signed good job to the horse. Tilting the medium sized rock up on one end, Caesi placed the rope underneath, feeding enough rope out to tie it off. She let the rock drop back down on the rope then brought the loose end back to the stretched out rope, tying it in a knot to secure it, keeping the deer mounted.

When the deer was dangling from the tree, Caesi placed her hands at her lower back leaning backwards. Stretching her muscles from the work she just did, she yawned slightly, cracking her spine. “Good work you two.” Caesi praised her Strider and Nu. Nu was happily eating the organs Caesi had gifted him, smacking and licking his lips, his tail wagging softly with happiness. Py had moved over to the river, getting herself a drink under the shade of a tree. Caesi checked on the deer in the tree, the blood was draining nicely from the carcass. She peered over to where Py was and walked over to the tree resting her back against the trunk and looking out at the river.

A large fish jumped up, catching it something to eat, giving Caesi an idea. I could fish while the blood drains and relax a little. The girl thought to herself with a grin, as she went to Py retrieving her fishing tackle and fishing pole to begin fishing.

Caesi grabbed the fishing line that was on the pole, grabbing a hook from the tackle she had with her she inserted the line through the eye of the hook. Wrapping the very end of line around the line, she twisted it six times around it. Doing this created a small loop at the end near the hook. Taking the end of line again, she fed it through the loop. Taking the line between her lips she moistened it, then pulled it tightly, making a simple cinch knot to secure the hook to the line. Grabbing her dagger she cut off the excess of line that was protruding out. Now Caesi needed bait to use on her hook. Laying the pole down she looked around her.

Heading to some rocks near the water, she lifted one up looking underneath. Not seeing anything she dug her fingers in the moist soil and dug in. Sifting through the soil she found her prize. A wiggling, slimy, worm was twisting back and forth angered at being disturbed. Grabbing the worm between her two fingers she placed the soil back in place, putting the rock back down. Carrying the wiggling prize back to her pole she grabbed the line, then her hook.

Taking the worm she passed the sharp end of the hook through the end of the worm. Whether it was the head or butt she was not even sure. She kept the hook about a centimeter away from the head of the worm, so the wiggler would not wiggle free. The worm thrashed from being impaled, making Caesi a little squeamish from hooking it. She quickly shook it off, she had no time to be worried about the worm. Caesi pushed the worm to the top of her hook, keeping the slimy thing just below the knot she made on the hook. Grabbing the longer end of the worm, she pushed it through the hook again. Caesi left a little slack, so the worm could still wiggle a little. Caesi speared the length of the worm again, then pulled it down onto the hook, so it was at the curved part of the hook. Taking a metal weight she added one to the line, up away from the hook, biting it with her back teeth to close it around the line.

Now that she was baited, she looked up to where she had previously chummed the water by accident. What was an offering to Semele and Caiyha was also, by accident, a way to draw fish out to eat. She sent a silent thank you to the goddesses once again, then moved to the chummed up water. She checked around for low hanging branches, when she was cleared of the obstacles, she brought her arm to the side and cast out, as if she were skipping a stone across the water. She aimed where the deep water met the shallow water, to try and lure a bigger fish out from the depths. Sitting at a rock near the water's edge, she sat and waited, as the worm wiggled on the hook taunting the fish in the water.

After several chimes the line on her rod tugged slightly. Caesi waited as her heart picked up from the excitement of getting a bite. Her hands tightening on the rod, as the line tugged again. She was sure that a fish had taken the back, so she jerked the rod back and up, setting the hook into the mouth of the fish. The fish fought back, jerking the line this way and that way, trying to escape the hook that was now lodged into it's mouth. Caesi pulled the fishing pole back towards her, trying to keep the line tight as she continued to pull back on the line, sinking the hook in deeper and securing it. When she felt as though the hook was securely lodged into the fish's mouth, she raised and lifted the line, pulling the fish from the water.

She brought the hooked fish closer to her, it was swinging on the line, thrashing around trying to still get loose from it's captor. “Not this time.” Caesi told the fish, as she carried the pole with the fish dangling from it away from the river so it could not escape her. Looking down at her catch, the fish was not that big, but big enough to eat. The tugging on the line made the fish seem bigger than it actually was.

The fish was the length of her middle finger to her wrist. Grabbing the hook she wiggled it out of the fish's mouth. She held the fish around the middle, from top to bottom, tightly in her hands, as the struggling had died down now that it was gasping for life. Bringing the fish to her tackle she grabbed a piece of string that was not that thick and had a straightened hook at the end. Taking the straightened hook she feed it through the gill of the fish then back out of it's mouth, sliding it down to the large knot that kept it in place. She then went back to the river, tying the straightened hooked end of the rope on a smaller rock, she wedged the rock between to larger rocks, then placed the fish back into the water to keep it fresh.

Caesi glanced back at the deer, blood was still streaming from the carcass so it was not time to leave just yet. She had enough time to fish a little longer. Caesi returned to the rock she found her first worm. She sifted through the cool, moist soil until she found a wiggling worm again. Taking the worm to her pole, she hooked it about a centimeter from it's head like she did last time. Spearing the warm three more times and pushing it down to the curved area of the hook. There was still some length that dangled and wiggled to taunt the fish in the water, so she was satisfied with it.

Going back to the edge of the river, she took her arm to the side and cast out the fishing line on the pole, like she did before. The hook sank into the water thanks to the weight and Caesi brought her pole at an angle to keep the worm from the bottom of the river. She gave a sigh, fishing was therapeutic in away, making her relax. She sat back on her rock and peered out over the shimmering river, that glistened like a blue sapphire in the sun's light.

It had taken several more chimed then before before her line gave another tug. This tug was more powerful, jerking her arms slightly. “Shyke!” Caesi exclaimed as she jerked the pole back and up to set the hook. The line thrashed around, making her arms swinging slightly, no matter how tightly she bunched her arm muscles to keep from being swayed. Caesi pulled back on the line again, the fish seemed to tug back, the struggle was one as the fish felt larger the last. Caesi in the fish fought for a whole chime before she was finally able to lift the thing out of the water. When she did so the weight was a bit much, and she fell backwards.

The large fish came at her face and she had no time to react. She was fish slapped by the large slimy beast, as it landed on her face and whipped her with it's tail fin. She felt blood seeped from her cheek as she struggled to get up. The fish was making it's way to the river with her pole, Caesi had no time to think, she pounced on the fish wrapping her arms around it's wet body. The fish fins cut into her arms slightly, as she pulled back on the beast. When the thing was far enough away from the river, she grabbed her pole and lifted it in the air. The pole bent slightly at the tip and the fish was too heavy for her to keep lifted for long periods. She felt the strain in her arm as she carried the fish away from the river. She laid it and the pole down on the ground, ran to where she had stringed the smaller fish. Untying the string, she brought it out of the water, with the smaller fish still wiggling at the end of the string.

She looked down at the larger fish who seemed to glare back at her with it's creepy fish eyes. “I am going to eat you and enjoy it.” Caesi growled, swiping the slime and blood from her face. She bent down and looked at the hook in the fish's mouth. It was bent and no longer usable. Caesi sigh from frustration. She had nothing to pry the hook out, only her dagger. With no other choice she cut the line leaving the hook in the fish's mouth. This fish was larger then the first, going from her finger to her elbow, and feeling like it weighed around 100 pounds but in reality it only weighed 8 pounds at the most. She fed the pointed hook through the gill and out the large fish's mouth. The fish still thrashed as it gasped for air, “You are a monster.” Caesi said looking down at the large fish shaking her head.

When the fish calmed down a bit, she brought her catches to the river. She found a larger rock to tie the string too, since now she had a larger fish. Tying it securely she wedged it between to larger rocks and placed the fish in the water.

As soon as the large fish hit the water it fought to be freed from it's restraints, beating up the little fish in the process. “Shyke..” Caesi muttered bringing the fish back out of the water, “What am I going to do now?” Caesi asked herself, sitting there thinking as she stared at the large fish. The only solution she could think to do was to cut the two smaller fins at the bottom of the fish off. Shrugging her shoulders, she placed the edge of the blade at one and sliced the fin off, then did the same to the other fin, making the fish unbalanced and slightly immobile. “Now you can't get away.” Caesi told the fish, placing them back into the water and securing them. The string wiggled as the fish tried to tug but it was not like before and eventually the monster would calm down.

Giving a sigh down at the fish on the stringer, she looked over at her pole and mangled line. She had to cut off the hook since she had no way or know-how to remove the bent hook from the fish's mouth. Going to her pole she placed it in her Yvas bags on Pyxis. Then she returned to her tackle and gathered it up, placing that back in the bags as well. She picked up her dagger, cleansed the blade then dried it off, placing that also in the Yvas bags. She gave Pyxis a pat on the neck, to which the mare replied with a soft nicker and exhale from her nostrils.

Caesi looked over at Nu who was now lazing under the shade of a tree, belly full from his treats. Blood was all over the black dog's muzzle, smeared on the white patch at his chest, making him look like a hound of Dira. She walked to the edge of the river, then called to Nu, “Come Boy.” She called, patting her thigh. The dog raised his head, looking at her with lazy eyes and a facial expression that spoke 'do I haffta.' Caesi smiled at his facial expression, but he really had to, so she spoke up in a more stern voice, “Come Now.” She commanded the dog, gesturing the command with her hand.

Nu rose shaking his head slightly and stretching out his muscles. He trotted over to Caesi at the river's edge and looked at her with a blank expression, “You need to be washed.” She told the dog as she got up and behind the dog. She put her hands underneath his two front legs and brought him closer to the water, until his paws were in the river. She then cupped her hands and brought water to the dog's muzzle, face, and chest. Caesi stroked her fingers through his short fur, watching the red water drip down into the river. She cleansed his fur until the water ran clear and he was whining from the bath. “Okay I am done, you can go now.” She told Nu, who shook his fur raining droplets on her. He lifted and shook his paws, the cold water making them sting slightly. He then trotted to a sunny patch and laid on his back to warm back up and dry off. Caesi chuckled at his behavior then looked over at the deer still hanging from the tree.

Caesi walked over to examine the carcass and see how much blood was left. No longer was the carcass profusely bleeding, it was now a slow trickle as a large puddle of blood laid on the ground, sinking into Semele's skin. Caesi figured she could now take the deer home, she just had to get it on Pyxis back, which would prove difficult if she did not do it right. Nibbling her lower lip she looked at where the string was tied off then at Pyxis.

Maybe if I lowered it on her back it would be easier, instead of trying to lift it onto her back. Caesi thought to herself as she looked between where the rope was tied off and her Strider, It would be easing the weight instead of plopping it down on her all at once. Caesi reasoned with herself, the idea now confirmed and would be executed.

She walked over to Pyxis grabbing the Yvass upon her and lead her under the deer. The horse exhaled through her nose, not liking being under the dead animal. “I know girl, it will only be a minute.” Caesi told her, stroking the horse's tense neck to relax her.

The huntress then walked over to where the rope was tied off, untying it and bracing her feet at the rocks to help with the weight, she lowered it as slowly as she could. Her arm muscles tensed up from the weight of the deer, as she began to lower the deer. She grabbed the rope with one hand, bringing her left over her right, in a pulley like motion. Sweat beaded at her brow slightly, as she continued to lower the carcass. The strain made her arms hurt from the weight, when the carcass was just barely touching Pyxis she could no longer on hold, as her muscles gave out and the deer plopped on the Striders back.

Pyxis shook her head, shifting her hooves nervously on the ground, nickering loudly in frustration. Caesi dropped the rope and ran to her companion, stroking the Mare's neck. “There girl, there.” She cooed to her Strider, “I am so sorry. I am not strong like a man.” She told the mare as she ran her hands up and down her neck, then she brought the horses face to her own until their noses meet. She and the horse shared a few breaths, as the Strider finally calmed down. “That's my girl.” Caesi cooed to the horse, stroking her fondly.

With her Strider calmer, she went back to the rope and brought it over to where the carcass now laid. She had to secure it before it fell off of Pyxis. Caesi took the rope and looped it around the front legs, since the hind legs were already tied together. She wound the rope around the front legs a couple of times, then took the end of the rope and tied it off onto her Yvas, securing the deer on Pyxis back. She would not be able to ride her Strider back to her Pavilion, since she was now carrying a deer on her back.

Once the deer was secured and ready for travel, Caesi went to the edge of the River and retrieved her stringer of fish. She brought them to the Yvas and tired them to it, then placed the fish into the Yvas bags for safe travel. She gave a whistle to Nu, making him ran back towards her, “Protect.” She told Nu who growled and perked up his ears and scanned the area. With Nu at her side she felt safer, so she patted Pyxis and gestured for her to follow. The trio left the Moresta River, heading back to the Pavilion to clean and cook the fish and to also figure out how to get the deer skinned and portioned out meat wise.
