She slept fitfully, tossing and turning, unable to get comfortable. Eventually, when the sounds of morning began, she gave up, rising before the others to begin the work that needed to be done. She scooped up the wetskins and the large cook pot, hefting the weight only because she had both hands to hold it. She jogged to the rill that had been their water source, holding the pot out away from her body so her knees didn't run into it as she moved. She dipped the pot into the water, filling it as much as she could in the small run. Afterwards, to fill the pot the rest of the way, she used the wet skins filling all three to empty into the pot.

Once the pot was full and the wetskins had joined it, Naiya made her way back to the camp, walking this time to keep from spilling. The pot was much heavier this time, weighed down by the water inside. Her arms ached from holding it up away from her body, but she managed to make it back to camp, if not the fire, before having to put it down.

She was beginning to sweat despite the cool weather, her stomach growing unhappy with her. She gently ignored it, the nausea had been coming and going for long enough that it had become fairly easy to work around.

The second cook pot was filled part way, and Naiya added a handful of lavender and a few leaves from a plant that carried a sweet taste. Next she stirred the fire, the embers still hot from the night before. She added a sprinkle of wood shavings, letting them catch before she began to add small sticks. She arranged the wood into a pile, adding larger pieces as the smaller ones caught fire.

When she had enough flame to warm the children when they woke, she added the partially filled pot, letting the flame heat the flavored water. She would have to let that sit, they had used the last of the oats in making the bread the day before.

She scooped up a crunchy flat bread to snack on, bringing it along with her bow and quiver as she approached Wildfire. He snorted a greeting, happy to let her run cool fingers across his skin. She sought bumps, cuts, sores, looking for anything that would impede his ability to be ridden. Instead she found nothing, but for a few clumps of mud.

She knocked the dirt away, using her fingers to curry the areas that needed the most attention while her free hand delivered bites of bread. She brushed dirt and hair from his back with a feathery motion, chasing the debris into the sky.

She needed the yvas for hunting, bringing game and goods back without it would be more difficult than made sense. So she grabbed the contraption and the pad, sliding them into place on Wildfire's back.

She swung up onto his back with a pull on the hand grip and a hop. A gentle squeeze of her legs pushed him into a walk. She was conscious to leave her hips gentle against his back so that he could move comfortably.

She turned her eyes out to the Sea, pausing only for a moment beside the covered wagon. She lifted the flap, peering inside.

"Banti, Tuka, Kabek." She called softly, not wanting to wake Seirei or the children, "Time for a hunt." She added, knowing how Banti and Tuka would perk at the word. Kabek was more likely to come along only because his siblings did.

She spurred Wildfire into action once more, pushing him forward by lifting her weight slightly off him and giving a second squeeze to his sides, he took off into a trot, and Naiya saw the cats soon surrounding her.

A few chimes passed and Naiya sat back in the saddle, letting her weight ask her companion to slow. He did, walking through the grass while Naiya's eyes scanned the ground for tracks or marks of passage.

Seventh Bell of Morning

It was growing lighter, and finding tracks became easier. Soon she had a solid trail to follow, steering Wildfire in the direction of the tracks with a gentle pressure of her legs. He moved, following her direction as they hunted the deer that had left the tracks.

The dirt was dry, so the tracks were deep in some places and nonexistent in others, lost to wind or grass, still she scanned out across the ground in the direction of movement until she found the path again.

It was when she caught sight of the buck in the grass ahead that she bid Wildfire to stop, lowering her weight back, sitting up straighter, all signals to slow and stop before she needed spare a word to her partner. She patted his neck, taking careful hold of the hand grips on the yvas so that she could lower herself down to the ground quietly.

She lifted her bow, slipping her quiver across her shoulders with care to keep from making noise. She pulled a string from her pack, tucking the oiled paper back away, she placed one loop over the nock at the base of the bow, flipping the tool, she pressed the base into the ground and bent the bow with her arms and her weight until she could loop the second end through the nock at the top.

She drew an arrow, putting it to her bow, ready, but not drawn. Wait Naiya signed to her mount, leaving him behind her while she stalked her prey. In the back of her mind she hoped the cats would be successful in their hunting as well.

She crouched in the grass, moving with steady steps. It was slow work, choosing a place to step, easing her weight forward, and keeping an eye on her prey in between. She aimed for grass, easing forward once her foot landed, eyes on the deer, then clear dirt, she stepped lightly, seeking sound or slippery footing before shifting her weight forward.

She didn't have to go too close before the creature was in her bow range, she stayed hidden in the grass, crouching while she aimed the tip of her arrow at the deer. She knew that if she could hit it, it would be better to aim for the eye or the base of the skull, but those were small targets, and she wasn't good at hitting such things. Instead she needed large targets. The lungs, the heart, these were easier to hit, and unlike hitting the gut or a leg, it would drop the deer far more quickly. They cannot run without air or blood.

So she steadied her hands, taking a deep breath in as she focused on the target, she drew her elbow back, careful to keep level with her chin as she pulled. Then to account for the angle of her shot she shifted the tip of the arrow's tip. She let her breath out, steadying her aim, then in the space of stillness between one breath and the next, she released her grip sending the arrow flying with a quiet twang.

She reminded herself to be still as the arrow departed, watching along the line of her shot for whether or not it hit. It did, shooting through the tender flesh behind the foreleg. She called to Wildfire as the deer began to run, but he didn't make it far, his mad dash for safety only killing him more quickly.

Wildfire came to her side, allowing her to quickly swing up into the yvas and trot after the deer, the large splats of blood confirming her direction following after the deer fell. When she dismounted beside the deer, it's chest still struggled to rise, she offered him a quick prayer, thanking the goddess for her good hunt.

She pulled a dagger quickly from her belt, using the strength of her body to quickly force the blade through the throat from one end to the other. She planted a hand on the neck below her blade and pressed against him while her dagger hand pulled forward, rending the throat and freeing her blade.

It took only ticks more for the buck to stop breathing, his fight finally over.

She left the deer to bleed in the grass.

She hadn't brought the equipment she needed to care for the kill in the grasses, and there was no sense leaving a bloody trail from here to her home. She may as well invite Zith and other predators to her home that way. A deep red invitation in the grass.

She pulled rope from her bag, using it to bind the back legs of the buck, she called for Wildfire, and he came to her, allowing her to struggle until the deer draped across his back, his legs secured to the yvas so that the blood could drain from it's neck. He snorted at the weight, tossing his head at her in question. Hand't she planned better than this?

No, she hadn't. So this was how it would have to be. They could go no where with the dripping creature, instead she went back for her arrow, finding it buried in the grass. She took a rag and wiped it down, removing flesh from the tip and blood from the shaft. She had time, so after returning to the kill she took her arrow and found a target, a tree, torn by deer and withered to nothing by harsh seasons. The dead wood would make a good target.

She paced out a medium distance, lining up her shot and checking the position of her feet in the dirt. She lined her bow up, raising it to chest height, and eyeing her target. She drew her arrow into place, pulling the string back on her inhale, she double checked her aim on her exhale, and when her lungs were empty she released the arrow.

It flew, not at the dark piece of bark she aimed for, but perhaps close enough to count if she had been aiming for lungs. She ran the distance to the tree, working her arrow free before running back out to her spot. The brief run warming her in what was a bit of a chilly morning.

She aimed again, this time her mark was the target, she lined up her shot once more, but this time when she drew back, she checked the height of her elbow and the angle of her pull. Satisfied, she repeated her shot, releasing the arrow and watching as it flew for the tree.

She ran back to the target tree, finding her arrow hadn't gone anywhere near the first mark, falling a forearms length closer to the ground. She kicked at the dirt, frustrated. That would have missed her deer completely. How she had hit the deer this morning was becoming more shocking.

She ran a circle around the wide tree, finding that the running released the tension in her arms. She raised her bow again, ready to repeat the practice until she made her shot in the same place each time.

She raised her bow again, the motion feeling heavy to strained muscles.

She would have to stretch the pain out of her muscles when she was finished, she hadn't worked with a bow in such a manner in too long, and her arms and core protested the sudden change. She pushed the pain aside, lining her arrow up, pulling her arm back. She maintained the height of her elbow, checked that she drew the bow string fully back, kept her back and stomach tight with focus.

Eyes trained on her mark, she released her arrow as soon as the breath left her. She watched her target, not her arrow, and saw the moment it hit the tree. She grinned, running forward to check the work.

She had hit the mark, or a close grouping the last couple of chimes, most of a bell had passed, and despite her growing success she couldn't spare any more time playing with her bow.

She picked up her arrow, likely dulled from use, and placed it back into the quiver, she would take it to be sharpened later. Likely all of her arrows would benefit from the tending.

She stretched her arms up, then out to her sides, swinging them out in front of her, then back as far as they would go. She stretched again, reaching up, up, up until her back began to bend backwards and her hands began to reach towards the ground behind her. She didn't get very far in that stretch before she lost her balance and had to tighten her stomach to pop back up to standing. When she did, she turned the stretch in reverse, reaching down to her toes.

When she stood back up, she realized that her back had bend long before she had stretched through her hips, so she tried again, remembering to keep her back straight as she reached first out as far as she could then down towards the ground. She widened her stance and repeated both motions, finally rising feeling refreshed.

She turned to her next hunt, plants and herbs to add to her supplies. She hoped to make cheese yet today, and she wanted to add some flavor to it. Perhaps to the whey as well, so that she could make a stew for dinner. She could cook rice in it, make something a bit more hardy.

She needed vegetables, though, and she preferred not to have to buy them all. Se moved away from the grass she had trampled, calling Wildfire to follow, because she had no desire to pick the bloody plants either.

She didn't have to go far before the distinct green shoots of garlic appeared in the grass. She stopped to pick a few, digging them up with careful fingers. She lifted two bulbs from the ground, burying dirt and rocks where the garlic had been to help prevent holes in the grass. She continued on, hoping for sage and perhaps berries.

It was nearing the tenth bell, her legs were tired from walking half crouched, eyes straining to see the herbs and plants she sought. She found onion, wild with green shoots growing from the tops, and not far away the green onion that was so common in the food she saw in the shops.

In the hollow of a tree's roots, growing up from the fallen leaves she found three mushrooms, large and pale brown. She added them to the yvas bag with her other finds. She caught sight of a familiar bush in the distance, so she decided to run, letting her legs stretch and her eyes rest.

The tall leafy brush was tangy, like citrus, the shoots were woody on the outside but she knew the inner leaves were soft. She pulled a few handfuls of the lemon grass, a plan for their dinner quickly growing in her mind.

She'd had enough, foraging, running, it was time to return home. She loaded the last of her finds into her yvas bag, then approached Wildfire's face, seeking to reward him with a treat. Mint was everywhere in the grasses, but often it was trampled or picked from the grass around the city, so Wildfire didn't find much of it. He loved the plant, and Naiya loved the freshness of his breath after he ate it. So when she had come across it in the grass she picked as much as she could hold, storing it away before picking a second handful for her faithful companion.

Wildfire chewed happily on the mint.

Naiya checked the stallion over, seeking the touch of heat or swelling that would signify that they had worked too hard this morning. She found none in his legs, but the shifting of the deer was beginning to irritate the skin beneath the animal's weight.

Naiya shifted the deer, draping him more acorss wildfire's shoulders with a bit of work, then she toook the trailing length of the rope and used it to secure the horns of the deer, helping to keep the carcass from moving so much. She wound the rope further, hooking the torso before tying it to the yvas. She shoved the weight of the buck around until it settled, heaving the rope and the mass of meat with the strength of her shoulders and back. Muscles protested again, after the bow today, she imagined everything would make her muscles protest.

When she was finished she rolled her head in a circle, loosening muscles through her neck, back, and shoulders. She made slow circles, stretching as much as she comfortable could while Wildfire chewed away at a second bite of mint. She rolled her shoulders a few times, waiting for him to finish before she swung up into the saddle to head back towards the city.

She continued to scan the ground both for tracks and flora that would suit her needs. She stumbled upon wild carrot, but the roots were small and hardly worth eating. She plucked two anyway, planning to use the greens, but perhaps they could boil the miza sized carrots for the children. The greens were bright and tall, they would be good for their stew.

She swung back into the saddle, urging Wildfire forward with a gentle squeeze of her legs. She sat through his excited trot, asking him to slow back down, and after a moment he did, despite his obvious excitement at heading home. They picked their way though the grass, stopping only one final time to harvest the dark greenish wood of a cinnamon plant. She cut away segments with her dagger, breaking the branches where she had to.

She stowed the branches and climbed carefully back onto Wildfire's back, the size of the buck making it more difficult. She urged him back into motion and they closed in on the city in only a few chimes more.

She guided him through the city with careful motions of her legs, pressure here or there to keep him from stepping too close to a child or too close to a tent. She stopped at a pavilion with greens on their display, peering through the collection to see if they had what she sought.

"Chard, dill, sorrel," She counted off the plants as her fingers brushed against them, the texture of the dill familiar, the seedy tops reminding her that pickling would begin soon. "Do you have any sage? I don't see it here." She inquired with gentle interest.

The man nodded, turning to a second set of shelves, but his face was flushed when he turned back. "Only a wee branch," he explained, showing her the few leaves on the stem. "I'll give it to you for five coppers."

Naiya looked at the branch, it would hardly work for her stew, let alone the cheese. "Would you take three?" She countered, but he shook his head. "What about potatoes? I could use some carrot or parsnip as well, would you take three then?"

He was considering her words. "Would you spend a miza today?" He returned an offer of his own.

"Do you have currants? Gold or black, even both? Two carrots, two parsnips, an ounce or two of currant, and the sage. I'll give you ten and three silver."

11th bell of Morning

He placed the sage, carrots and tubers on the table, "No currants, I'm afraid, and the carrots and parsnips are more. A gold for the lot." Naiya looked sharply at the pile, clearly not sold on the deal as she mounted once more. "I'll throw in a tomato, it's a bit old, needs cooked now, but you can take it for the gold."

Naiya agreed handing him the coin for the pile of food with gratitude in the shape of her hands. He handed the food up to her, and Wildfire turned to nip at the greens. She slapped his shoulder gently, a chiding, and he shifted but turned back away from the food.

She clicked softly, squeezing her legs to press Wildfire into the crowd. She turned her hips asking him to turn rather sharply towards another pavilion. She could already see what she wanted, so she didn't bother to dismount.

"Excuse me," She called into the pavilion, the table unmanned. A quick reply was called to her in response.

"Please wait a moment." The voice said, the fussing of a small child growing louder as she did. The girl behind the counter was too young to have a child of her own, Naiya assumed it was a sibling. She fussed loudly, but settled down once the elder child set her into the basket of furs beside the table. "What can I get you?"

"I need two pounds of whole oats, and two of wheat. A half pound of rice, too, if you have it." The girl nodded, moving back to gather the grains. "Currants too, if you have them." Naiya called after her.

The girl returned quickly, bags of grains placed before her as well as what looked to be a few ounces of currants.

"Four gold and seven silver." The girl counted on her fingers to reach the total. Naiya cocked her head, questioning the amount. The girl counted again, "Four gold, six silver, and two coppers." She amended, and Naiya nodded, happy to pay the amount.

"Thank you," Naiya said, leaning over the side of her horse to scoop up the new additions. She hung them from the yvas, careful that they wouldn't spill.

She pushed Wildfire forward again, weaving him through the streets with hip and legs as guides as she made her way towards the diamond clan, she had plans for her pavilion that would require more than just the animals she had already at home.

The Thunderpaw pavilion was bustiling, as it often presented, but still it was pristine, presenting an air of formality that had Naiya dismounting from her horse. A man approached, large and handsome, but only just taller than herself. Greetings shaped his hands, his voice a boom of welcome as he came to lead her in.

Greetings Naiya signed in return, "I need a-" The man spoke over her, friendly but firm.

"I'm Tomma Thunderpaw, Of the Diamond Clan, it's a pleasure to meet you...?" He shaped a gentle, teasing, chiding into his hands. It was a formal business, they would converse, he would get to know her, and then they could conduct business.

It was not ideal for her plans, but there was no fighting him that was clear in the shape of his form.

"Naiya Dawnwhisper, Hailing from the Amethyst Clan." Apology, pleasure, well met.

"Hailing from?" He inquired, and Naiya nodded,

"I'm of the Nightsong Pavilion, but married now. Shahar, my husband, he doesn't recall much from his past, so we've not been able to claim his clan yet."

His confusion was clear, "I come from a large family, I had never had need to visit Bull, so he didn't come to mind. My husband doesn't know much of anything about the city, only what he's learned new..." She shurgged, helpless taking rough form on her hands.

His smile was sympathetic, his body gently curious, and his eyes intent as though he truly cared about her tale. She shurgged, taking a moment to compose herself before speaking again.

Sorrow shaped her hands, "He was taken," the raid. Her hands chopped out the signs with anger.

Her sorrow was echoed in his shoulders, "I've helped Shahar with his companions before, I'm sorry to hear that he's gone." He was sincere, perhaps he did care, but Naiya still felt her ire raise at his words. She stopped in her tracks, forcing him to do the same.

Gone, no. "Not here, but alive." She corrected with a strength that left no room for debate.

"Of course," he ammended, and they began to walk again, "We were lucky, our losses to the pirates were few." He gestured to the collection of animals that blossomed beautifully at the hands of his pavilion, "We still have most of our best breeders, and we've caught back up with our training." A polite way to steer the conversation away from such a touchy subject, Naiya noted.

"They are beautiful, and I hear much about the training you give. There is no one beter in the city." She admired them for that, it was quite a feat.

"Indeed, is that perhaps why you are here today?"

She nodded, glancing around at the animals. The Helevaos Shepards were distinct, and quite beautiful. "A herding dog, I have a fast growing herd. Nearing thirty and five heads."

He nodded, "A shepard, then." She agreed, watching as he looked out over his assortment. "Trained," he mumbled, considering more than asking for any input from the woman.

"What kind of herd?" Tomma asked after a long pause, his eyes leaving the animals to meet hers again. She hadn't thought it mattered, but she had an answer all the same.

"Horses, zibri, and goats. We've got other animals too, a number of hunting cats, imperial watchers too, if it matters." He nodded, striking off in a different direction, but a new thought brought Naiya to a halt. "There are children as well, and more on the way."

Reassurance overtook his posture, his smile softening, "I won't send you home with anyone who isn't mindful of little ones."

He moved through the dogs, pausing to consider a few times before moving on. Eventually, they circled back, coming to a stout creature with bi-colored eyes. Naiya thought he looked about the same as any other, if not a bit shorter.

"Go ahead and meet this one. He's a sweet boy, took well to the training." He seemed mellow enough as Naiya approached, but the closer she got the more he seemed to vibrate with energy. She reached a hand out to him, and he sniffed her curiously, then without warning he launched into her crouched legs, spinning in a circle between her knees and casting her a glance over his back.

A shock of laughter filled her, and she reached out to pat at his exposed side. His stillness didn't hold, her attention sending him into another burst of excited speed. He was cute, but perhaps not great with little ones who could easily fall underfoot. She opened her mouth to say so as the dog ran a loop and headed back towards them, but Tomma interrupted with a loud call to the dog.

"Hold." The command rang with authority, and the dog's reaction was instant. He froze. Not the stop, wiggle about, sit down, kind of listening. He took to stillness as though he was carved of stone. His eyes searched for the reason for the command, but he didn't move.

Naiya was impressed, and the dog waited for the following command before moving once more.

"He's got the whole list down, he'll keep a herd together, and help drive them. He's gentle, even with small things, not a bit of thought to killing, though, so he'll do you no good for hunting. Might chase off a predator, but if that's what you're looking for you'd do better to pick another dog."

Naiya shook her head, they had other animals for such things. She eyed the dog once more, and he sat under her inspection. His eyes met hers, not quite doleful, but imparting a great deal of emotion. One blue, one brown. It was a sign, perhaps.

As if sensing the decision, Tomma grinned and patted Naiya on the shoulder. "His name is Kahl." He told her, quickly running her through the commands the dog had been taught.

She traded the coin for the dog, her own grin growing as the creature watched. She reached down to pet him once more, and gave the command to follow. Kahl did, with only a few concerned looks back at Tomma. She would bring him back to see the man, if only for the dog's comfort. It was clear that there was attachment between the two.

She mounted Wildfire, eyes checking the sky for the time that had passed. Two more stops and she would be done and could begin processing the deer. Well if she were quick. The meat shouldn't sit much longer as it was.

Her next stop was easy, the craftsmen of the Ruby clan were multitalented, and the fellow she requested the pavilion from told her where to buy a nice set of shelves and a table for a good price. From there she didn't have to go far to find jugs and casks.
