Lights were lit. In spite of looking decrepit and ramshackle, Sunberth's hovels and residences managed to radiate with a certain cosiness. The orange hues escaping the small windows shone down into the narrow streets and alleys below.
Adder was walking towards the Sunset Quarters, contempleting if he should visit Braga's bordello or the Pig's Foot Tavern before going home. Rather spend some more time among others after guarding the Slave Market all day, than go back already and read one of his books for the eleventh time.

He turned a corner and managed to avoid being hit by the load of trash that was tossed out of the window by some whench. Adder gripped the hilt of his dirk and continued down the alleyway with long strides. Sunberth was a dangerous environment and one learned fast to keep one's hands close to their weapons. The sun was entirely set now and the young Dhani halfblood quickened his pace... Braga's girls were calling.

At the end of the open sewer that Sunberthians called a 'street' Adder Rayne noticed a large man, broad of shoulder and with a big belly, turning around wildly. He shouted something to a much smaller figure with its hand held up as to avoid being struck.
Adder gripped his dirk even firmer and marched up to the duo.

Jokor blanched as he saw the fat man's fist flying at him. His hear ruffled a bit from the wind of the punch as it passed over his head, having evaded the punch by ducking fast.
"Hey old drunk!, Do I need to stand still for you to hit me?" Jokor taunted the man. Noticing the angry tic on the man's face.
"Shut up you little bastard!" The man yelled and catched him by the collar of his old shirt, a look of dread quickly took over jokor's face as he was lifted in the air.
"Now I got ya ya little rat!" The man grinned as he lifted Jokor to eyelevel, the stink of cheap beer on his breath.
"Now you can't run anymore do you?" He reared back his fist and slammed it in the boy's stomach, letting him gag.
"Right now give me back my drinking money that you snatched!"
Jokor just looked up at the man with a defiant look in his eyes and tried to break out of his grip.
"I am not letting you escape little rat!" he strenghtened his grip on the boy.

Rayne was only a few metres from the brute who had managed to grab hold of the boy. Who was apparently a pick-pocketer. With a feeling of melancholic nostalgia Adder thought of his youth on the streets of Sunberth.

"It was wrong for the boy to steal, but it's even more wrong that you hit him." he intervened, the 's' in his words were a bit more pronounced than he'd liked, and most of the time he succeeded in masking the hisses. "Besides, it appears he's doing you a favour..."
Adder didn't know why he was doing this. He did know it wasn't out of compassion or pity? He thought it was because he might have recognised something of himself in the small thief.

The big bellied brute wobbled a bit on his legs, he reeked of alcohol and filth. His nose looked as if it had been broken several times. A typical Sunberthian scoundrel, Adder categorised him. "Let go of him." Rayne commanded sternly.

He adopted a stance so he could take action immediatly should the man decide to try and do something stupid. Adder couldn't see any visible weapons or knives but in Sunberth everybody was armed.

"Let go of him?" The man just looked at the strange boy before he burst out in laughing as he saw the flimsy stance of the boy.
A devilish smirk made his way on Jokor's face as the man looked away from him and at the boy. taking hhis chance he quickly swung his feet and kicked the man in the nuts... or at leas t tried to his leg's where just to short and buried itself in the man's rather impressive belly instead.
"That doesn't hurt me little kid." Jokor growled in frustration as he was lifted to the man's eyelevel again.
The man smiled with a mean twinkle in his eye.
"Say kid! you said you wanted me to let him go right? Well catch!"
The man reared back the arm which was holding Jokor before throwing him at the kid.
Jokor let out a yelp of surprise when he was sent sailing through the air Hitting the boy with the knife rather hard.

"Say kid! you said you wanted me to let him go right? Well Catch!"
"Don't call me ki..." Adder caught the street urchin being launched at him. The slave guard's padding protected him from most of the impact, but still both of them tumbled and hit the dirty ground.
The brute laughed. Adder hissed.

"You'll pay for that, you drunk" Adder spat out, gritting his teeth. His pride was hurt. Regaining his footing he drew his dirk. The sound of cold steel caressing the leather scabbard cut through the Sunberthian night, and for a moment everything went quiet. The blade reflected the moonlight, that welcomed it as if it was a long lost lover. Sunberth longed after blades...

He couldn't help but wonder who had gotten into trouble. The brute, the kid or himself.

Jokor just curled himself into a ball and braced him for impact as soon as he could, though it wasn't necessary, the other kid softening his fall considerably.
As soon as the other boy hit the ground Jokor quickly rolled of him and got on his feet as soon as he could.Still feeling a bit dizzy.
He immediately glared at the laughing drunk.
Jokor cast a suspicious glance at the kid besides him, immediately noticing the dagger like blade he was holding. A grin spread on his face.
"Hey you big moron!" Jokor yelled in a confident tone. "Why don't you just lay down already so we can loot you and save us the effort? I doubt a fatty like you could beat two of us!" The grin on jokor's face widened completely ignoring that the man was fully capable of kicking his ass into next week

The little raskall began to swear at the big bellied thug, drawing his drunken attention.
Adder trusted the thief would be sufficiently fleet of foot to keep out of his reach and circled to the right of the big man. Rayne's steel flickered in his hand.
"You got a knife? Get ready to use it..." he hissed to the little urchin. Everyone in Sunberth had at least a kitchen knife he'd stolen somewhere.

"Am not moron you whelp!" the drunkard argued.
Adder was pleased he was having trouble keeping himself standing as the fat guy had to bring one of his legs back to keep his balance.
Rayne and the streetrat would have to use their speed and guile against this troll.

Inside, Adder thanked the heavens Sunberth didn't have a town watch...

"You got a knife? Get ready to use it..." Jokor just mentally cursed himself. "Nope don't have one." He hissed back before following Adder's example and circling to the left of the fat bastard. His eye fell on a rather big rock lying on the ground, he smiled as he picked it up, seeing that the fat guy was paying more attention to him then the other one.
"Not a moron?" Jokor laughed throwing the rock up and catching it again, "I see otherwise!" He threw the rock with all his might at the fat bastard when Adder stood behind the man.

The man ducked and the rock just sailed over his head, harmlessly hitting the ground.
"Ah you can't aim if yer life depended on it!" The man gloated temporally fixing all his attention on Jokor.

The rock the small thief threw didn't hit home. But it did draw the fatty's attention to Jokor. That was all Adder needed. He had cursed the streetrat for the lack of a blade but now praised him mentally for his quick thinking and ability to improvise.

The Dhani halfbreed lunged forward and with a quick fluent motion he slit the tendons of the fat man's knees. The big man collapsed on the ground and reached for his joints. Adder let his dirk sink into the man's big belly and cut through it like a pillow. The stench of entrails and blood escaped the large sack of lard as he squeeled like a pig. Red lifejuice flowed from the wound and quickly his face began to lose colour.

The man's brusk movements diminished and after a while even the gurgling stopped. Rayne was high on adrenaline and it took a little before he managed to regain his calm. Wiping off his dirk on the man's tunic he said to the thief "So what's in that purse?" Adder let his hands glide over the body but was dissapointed as he seemed to find nothing of value. He continued his search.

"Good job with the rock by the way" he added.

Jokor didn't even flinch or look away from the mess that was the drunk, already being used to such sights.
"Well I know that whatever is in his pockets half of it is mine!" he walked towards the dead drunk and crouched down on the other side of adder.
He began rummaging through the pockets and other places where somebody could hide things.
He shrugged at the complement of the strange kid. "It was supposed to hit him on the face, But it helped anyway."
He threw some random junk on the floor, grunting in irritation that he didn't find any useful stuff inside his pockets.
"So why did you step in anyway? Kinda strange for a sunberthian to help a stranger." He gave adder an suspicious look. Not thrusting the kid for a copper miza.
