Summer Day 7, 516 AV
Late Afternon

Naiya hefted the first of the two products that needed to come home. The pot she carried was fairly large, but running towards empty the cheese inside needing to be used today, and since it had not sold, it would supplement her dinner. She might have carried two but for the rounding of her belly. The extra caution she took kept her hands too high to see over a second pot. It was a blessing in disguise, however, because it kept her from balancing the weight against wounds, and prevented her from putting too much weight on her newly healed ankle.

She didn't have to go far, the pavilion that housed her store only just outside the implied boundary of home. The proximity was built of practicality, the herd could be watched by the pavilion, yet still worked with while she minded the shop. She deposited the pot beside the fire, moving back to the shop with a pace that minded both her condition and the lull of the warm evening.

The second was a cask, nearly full with milk in need of either stirring or skimming. It was perhaps a few days old, and wouldn't last much longer. It would go in their breakfast in the morning, and the fresh milk of the evening could replace it. She didn't move it far, just to the outside of the pavilion so that she could close things up.

A waterskin filled the vessel that held the sample product, the jar lids sliding tightly into place on each one. A cloth draped across the jars, with the edges in the water, would keep them cool in the heat. It was a technique she used often, one that had been common in the Nightsong house. The rest of the milk was fresh, aside from the barrel outside, and would keep through tomorrow.

She moved from flap to flap, sliding the large ones closed while leaving small ones open to keep it as cool as possible inside the large pavilion. When she was sure everything was closed up tight, she closed the big pavilion entrance as well.

It was harder to lift the cask from the ground, her belly and her injuries together making for quite the difficult situation. She managed though, holding the weight with a bit more ease than usual since she carried less. All the same, she decided to raise the bar by lifting the cask straight out at shoulder height to strengthen the muscles in her arms. It was no good getting soft as her pregnancy continued.

She placed the cask in the shade inside the pavilion at home, and when she caught sight of Seirei she beckoned her over. Greetings, apology, request "Would you fetch water? We can make tea and start dinner." She gestured to a water skin, and offered the one at her belt. "I was going to start grinding grains for bread, and perhaps Khida will have found something for dinner." She scanned what she could see of the camp, but didn't see Khida right off, and abandoned her search.

Banti and Tuka had gone off hunting, the weather had all the animals out and about. Perhaps they would bring home some game. Otherwise they would break into their food stores. "It is growing more difficult to reach the ground, I'm not sure how you managed such things, sister." She grinned, teasing, shared experience coloring the shape of her hands.

She would wait for Seirei's answer before moving towards the wagon, seeking the grains she had purchased recently. Any left from last season would surely need cooking, and the bread she had learned to make was the perfect solution. She gathered all the old grain, checking through the bags for mold or the softening of rot. One bad had softened, it was a very small bag, but it was disheartening all the same to find it bad. She put it aside to show Seirei so she could recognize the bad grain in the future.

She was gathering the bowl shaped stone and it's partner when Khida entered the camp, Naiya offered her a greeting and a smile, glad they'd had an opportunity to sort some things out the day before.

Lukar and Lira babbled happily to each other, occupied in some game that had meaning only to them while Taerin rocked Raiden and Teirue. Every so often, she shifted her hand down to rub her swollen belly as if it pained her. Seirei knew what her friend was going through. The sharp pains that started before true labor began weren't as painful as true labor was, but they were very uncomfortable all the same. Taerin was due to give birth later in the season, and Seirei knew that while her friend had very mixed feelings about both giving birth, and the child that would come, she would be relieved when it was over and done with.

Seirei continued to watch them for a few ticks more, before returning to her task. She picked up a plank of seasoned oak and sawed roughly a foot off of the end of it. Using one of her charcoal sticks, she sketched the rough shape of a spoon on both sides of the plank. It was by no means a work of art, but it didn't have to be. Her drawing showed the basic shape, and that would show her where she needed to cut. That was all she needed.

Seirei traded her charcoal stick for her axe, and began the task of cutting away the excess wood. Her strokes were confidant, and sure. Before long, she had the rough shape of the spoon she wanted to make. So she set her axe aside, and began giving the spoon shape with her knife. She started at the bottom of the spoon, and worked towards the handle. When it came time to carve out the bowl of her spoon, she used her adze. The curved blade was much more useful for the task than the straight blade of her knife. She hummed softly as she worked, a lively song that her mother had often sung while working.

Once she thought the bowl was deep enough, Seirei paused to examine her work. Judging that it was good enough, she set the adze aside, and took up her smoothing cloth. She rubbed the cloth over the spoon carefully to be sure that any rough areas were smoothed away. When she was satisfied with her work, she put the spoon away with the growing collection of goods she was making for the store she hoped to open some day. Then she cleaned up her mess, and went outside to stretch.

The voice of her sister caught her attention, requesting that she go fetch some water. Seirei was quick to oblige, taking the water skin Naiya offered for the task.

Greetings, glad to help.

"Tea sounds good. What kind should we make?" Seirei questioned as she returned with the newly filled water skin.

"Can I help you grind the grains for the bread?"

Seirei had helped one of the healers grind slippery elm bark to repay her for examining her when she needed confirmation that she was pregnant. So she had some experience in using a mortar and pestle. Seirei wondered if grinding grains for bread would be similar to grinding bark. When Naiya teased her, and mentioned that she too was having difficulty reaching the ground, Seirei grinned back.

"It wasn't easy." she replied.

Worth it, though.

Naiya went to the wagon, and appeared to be doing something with the bags of grain stored there. Seirei followed so she could offer to help her sister. Naiya showed her the contents of one of the smaller bags. It took Seirei a while to understand what she was seeing, but she realized that the grains looked softer than they should somehow. Her sister explained that this meant the grain had gone bad, and Seirei began to examine it more closely. She was determined that she would be able to recognize bad grain in the future if she saw it.

When Khida returned, Seirei offered the woman a warm smile, and a greeting of her own.

NoteThe money for the lumber Seirei used to make the spoon has been deducted from her ledger.
