Stammer and Blush

7th Fall 516
It had been a good day for her. Two performances had gone well, the crowds that had gathered small, but definitely entertained, and she had managed to get a reading done, for a young woman who had been planning to visit her grandmother. It was an interesting reading, that was what she could say about it. Nothing seemed to make sense or add up - she blamed Alvadas since considering how hard it was to travel around normally.

Nephti flicked the cards through her hands, raising from where she had sat to do her tricks. Her mind was elsewhere, but was caught by an old man who sat across the road, resting against a house while he himself perched on a pile of crates. He gestured, although the Eypharian wasn’t certain whether it was to her. She waited a second, watching him, before he scratched his balding head and gestured again, forcefully pointing a stubby finger.

“Oi, six-arms, get over here, now,” he grunted, pointing some more in case the six armed girl couldn’t understand his common. Curious, Nephti did what he said, shuffling over quickly. “Finally,” he muttered when she came close enough to take a good look at him. He wore loose, ragged clothes, scrunching a loose hat in one hand while the other picked at chunk of meat in his teeth. He looked her up and down, clearly judging her, while she struggled to restrain herself from doing the same.

“So, six-arms, you seem to think you’re a master of the cards?” While Nephti struggled to find a response, he continued, not exactly expecting one. “I’ve seen you, all day, with those things in your hands, all six of ‘em, playing with the public.” He stopped for another moment, letting Nephti open her mouth before cutting her off again. “You do a good shuffle and a nice deal. Not sure what you say to the lot but you get them interested.” He paused again, but this time Nephti knew not to bother. Annoyed that she had learned, he continued a little more violently, letting a bit of spit fly, “Not bad, not bad at all. Perhaps you do know stuff. But you don’t know everything, do you? Let me show you something… different to the little party tricks you know.”

He pointed at the ground beside him, waiting for Nephti to sit there before he slunk to the ground himself, pushing a crate between them to form a table. Then he gestured towards the cards in her hand, waiting for her to hand them over. She put that set, the newer, more elaborate set, away, returning with the cards she had always had. Then she passed them over, watching his short fingers rifle through them, pulling out the cards he didn’t like. Empress, Fool, all the major deck. He pushed them back in a rough pile towards her, watching as she struggled to make them neat again with a smile. Then he pulled cards out, showing them to her.

“Ever heard of Stammer and Blush?” When Nephti showed now recognition, he continued, “Let me show you. You start with two cards, and there’ll be three face up for us all to see in the middle - we like to skip the first betting, if it’s a quick game. We bet, we add another card, and we do that again. You want a good hand. The best hand. Or you want to get everyone else to fold.” He spat to the side, “It’s not hard. You either fold, check, or raise the bet. Get it?” She wasn’t certain she did, but she nodded anyway. “Good.” The man looked around, spotting people she hadn’t even noticed, and pointing his stubby finger at them too. One was a young man, the other somewhere in between the two. They settled in around, Nephti feeling a little daunted by the group that now sat around.

Stammer and Blush

“Wait. What is the best hand?” Nephti blurted out as the cards were dealt out.

The old man laughed. “Girl won’t be fooled. Royal flush - ace to ten in one suit, then any straight flush, then four same, then full house - that’s two and three, then any flush with all cards from the same suit, then straight, three of a kind, two pairs, pair and high card. Got it?”

What he had just said made no sense to her, even less than how the game was played, but she nodded anyway, taking her two cards and scanning them quickly. A queen of wands and 8 of coins. She had no clue what to think of the cards. Once everyone had been dealt their own hands, three cards were flipped onto the table. Two queens - swords and cups and a seven of swords. “Let’s have a clean game, let this six-arms learn before we take everything she has! Let’s start with copper, hey boys?”

He chucked a copper piece onto the table, as did the man after him. The younger one shook his head, dropping his cards. “You can never deal me good cards!” he grinned, turning his head to Nephti. Suddenly, all eyes were on her and she was completely uncertain what to do. Would having lots of the same card work? Maybe. She couldn’t remember the hand thing.

She pulled a copper out from the money she had made, placing it carefully beside where the other two had fallen. The old man nodded as if he was agreeing with her move, although she wasn’t certain why. It wasn’t like he could see her cards. “Alright, here’s the next one.” He pulled another card out - four of swords this time. Nephti wasn’t certain what to do. As the other two placed various coins down, she stared between her hand and the cards before her. She had three the same, but would that be enough? Deciding to risk it, she placed another copper down. “Won’t do, six-arms,” the old man smirked, “You have to match the two copper pieces now.” She added another, nervously. He laughed, watching her tentative nature. “Either you want to bet, or not.” She pushed the two coins further in, cementing her choice. “Interesting.”

Then he pulled of an ace of coins, and added three more coppers to the pile. The next man folded, leaving the decision to her. She would have three of a kind, but she didn’t think it would be very high. Then again, she had already lost three coppers, and the metal glinting on the table tempted her. She pushed out three more coppers, matching his bet. They flipped over hands. He beat her, clearly, by the way he took the money from the table. Oh, wait, that was how. He had two aces, which, with the two queens and ace made a full house. She could remember that.

“Can read you like an open book, six-arms. It was obvious you had what you had.” He pushed the money into a pocket, taking the cards again, “Why don’t you shuffle, show the boys how you do it.” She took the cards, running them through her fingers without a second thought. This part was natural - it was the game that wasn’t.

She dealt, placing her two cards last, before remembering to place three in the middle too. 5 of coins, 7 of swords and 6 of cups. Her own barely matched, a 2 and 6 of wands. Perhaps she had a chance with the 6, but most likely not.

When it came to her turn, she folded, straight away. “Not want to play, six-arms, now that you’ve seen how the game works?” the old man grinned, throwing more coins onto the table without paying much attention, “It’s because of the way you play. Watch us, try guess if we have good cards or are bluffing.”

“Bluffing?” she had to ask.

“See how inexperienced she is with real cards?” the group laughed, “It’s when you pretend to have a good hand, while you actually don’t.”

Nephti nodded, not sure what pretending meant exactly either. Acting, she assumed, given the context. She watched the players carefully, watching their mouths curl at the edges and the flickers in their eyes as cards were added. But she couldn’t tell why. Were they smiling because they were getting away with “bluffing” or because they actually had good cards? Were they interested at the new card because it made their hand better, or worse? By the time the game was over, and the cards were revealed, Nephti still wasn’t certain.

“One more game, before we give this six-arms her cards back and let her run back home to mummy?” She tensed at that, remembering how she had left her mother last season. She had to write back. She had been putting it off too long. But this wasn’t the time or place. And from her silence, the men had assumed she was up for another game.

Stammer and Blush

Queen and Jack of coins for her. A promising start. Nephti tried to keep a straight face as she examined the cards in the middle. 10 of diamonds, 4 of wands and 9 of cups. She thought she had a pretty good hand, pushing a copper coin forward. The old man played next, matching her bet then raising it with another coin. Then the next, frowning at the old man’s bet, folded. The young man folded again. “Seriously, you can’t deal!” he moaned to the older man, who smirked secretly.

A king of swords was placed, and Nephti struggled to withhold her smile. These cards were good - they were her cards. She added another two copper coins to the pile, waiting for the old man’s response. He hesitated, before matching it, and drawing a final card. A ten of coins.

Confident, Nephti bet another four coppers. He called the bet.

Nephti hesitated at his response. Surely she had a good set - it would be hard to beat, that was for certain. Carefully, she flipped her cards over, showing him what she had. At the same time, she watched his cards, trying to figure where he had beaten her. He had three nines and two tens - full house, she seemed to remember. And obviously, it was better than her straight flush, since he pulled the money towards him, grinning gratefully. “Almost had me there,” he admitted through a mouthful of spit, “But no girl, six-arms or not, is going to beat me! Here,” he thrust forward the cards he had gathered towards her, Nephti’s arms flying to catch them all and arrange them into a nice pile, “If you ever want to play Stammer and Blush some more, just find me. I won’t mind getting a few extra coppers!” He laughed at his riches, and Nephti smiled, having enjoyed herself more than she expected. She was glad, however, to leave, rising quickly and thanking them for the lesson and games.

Stammer and Blush was a fun game, she had to admit. Only she needed some more practice - and nice people to play with!

Sorry about the delay, but this was a fun thread to grade. I look forward to seeing Nephti become Alvadas's primary card shark XD Just a note though, the colour of your text is kind of hard to read with that background.
