Winter 5, 516 AV

Sayana awoke feeling groggy. The small closet had been a poor alternative to decent sleeping quarters. After finding her way to a meager breakfast of overpriced gruel, she sought out Gilldarey’s lab.

“About time.”

She paid him little heed and was anxious to get through whatever he needed to be done. Although, apparently he had a lot in store for her.

The experiments were uncomfortable and sometimes a little painful. Mostly they were psychologically disturbing as her skin was forced to become scales or changed to a new colour or claws elongated upon her finger nails. Although the most disturbing one of all was what he called a “mass transfer”.

“Please hold this piece of parchment in your dominant hand.”

Cautiously Sayana took it in her mid right. As the nuit spoke a few words in his foreign language, a tingling shot up her arm. This time it felt deeper, more internal. It was as if her very bones were weakening, her arm becoming malleable, and her flesh molding slowly into the rest of her body. Then with a horrified gasp, she looked over and realized that her entire mid shoulder was gone and fused to her body as a blobby lump.

She struggled to maintain a hold on the piece of parchment, but her fingers suddenly felt weak and unable to function the same way. Her arm drooped down like an over boiled vegetable and began to join to her torso.

She wanted to wretch.

Clearly the piece of parchment was no longer needed as it lay forgotten on the floor. Sayana’s once fully functioning right mid arm had now full combined with her body and the added mass was distributing itself within her torso. She now had precisely five arms.

“Excellent! Wonderfully done.” Came the whoop of joy from the nuit. Sayana, on the other hand was far less impressed but she held her tongue regardless.

It was nearly afternoon before Sayana was released from the experimentation. Gilldarey mentioned something about stretching the natural body too much. But Sayana thought he needed more time to draw up his scrolls to test. Either way, it let her escape the dank dungeon that smelled of old books. She fully intended to use the break to get some fresh air. One way or another.

Her body felt violated and she grabbed a quick hunk of hard tack from her ‘closet’ before making her way outside to find her horse. Truthfully, she had neglected Stardust but she intended to make it right. Starting with fresh water.

The stormy weather had ceased at the moment, but it meant the ground and leaves were covered with wet drops of rain. As Sayana saddled up her mount, an idea came to her. “Stay calm Stardust. There’s nothing to fear.” She spoke in warning with a comforting pat to the mare’s neck.

The Eypharian focused on her high left palm and began tracing small circles in it with the finger of her right high. She let her thoughts of the morning drift away while enabling the small gesture to consume her mind. Reaching inside her, she pulled at strands of djed willing htem to form upon her palm. But all she needed was a little.

As she opened her eyes, she saw that a small pool of red shimmering res was contained in her palm. It would be more than enough. Sayana bent down near the wet undergrowth. “Come sweet water. Fill my hand. Come and gather. Draw near and join with my res, my being.”

Her words were soft and encouraging. It was a similar sort of tactic of how she would initiate hypnotism. Sweet, beckoning, enticing. She repeated the same message over and over in different ways, trying to engage her mind to harness the magic she had in her palm.

Ever so slowly, the nearest droplets were pulled towards her res. They came in different directions and some even from a small puddle. “Stop.” She whispered as her cupped hands became full, and she lifted the newly gathered water up towards her horse. There was hesitation in the white mare, but eventually the horse drank. Sayana repeated the process of collecting the rain water, and she was able to reuse the res she had produced from earlier.

Feeling rather accomplished with her magic, Sayana put one foot in the stirrup and hoisted herself up onto the beautiful white mare. “That-a girl Stardust. Now let’s find you something proper to eat. Once we’ve had a good run, of course.”

Gripping the saddle horn and giving a firm nudge of her knees they set off through the damp landscape. With a kick of her heels, they moved into a trot and soon a canter, treading upon low shrubs and churning up mud. The feeling of freedom as they splashed across a small stream and press onwards, was a feeling unmatched. Even with the gloom of the island Sayana felt the pounding of her heart just as strong as the pounding of hooves.

Fields of Death

It was a strange landscape. Tall trees with wide canopies dotted the barren grasslands reminding her of the trees in southern Cyphrus. In the distance she could see clusters of what appeared to be forest but everything seemed to be gnarled and disfigured. As she crossed the vast fields, the terrain rolled, yet with sharp outcrops of rock and in the distance she could see a tall mountain range cutting through the island.

The wildlife was also peculiar, but minimal. As Stardust cantered across the land, vegetation grew in clusters and large expanses of rock or dirt masked out the struggling shrubs and grasses. Sayana could see the occasional critter darting away in her wake and only once did she stumble across a nesting ground in which a flock of birds suddenly took flight. There was probably more in the forests, but for now the Eypharian was content to explore the prairies.

A stream blocked their path and Sayana reined in her horse to dismount and travel along by foot. A sudden splash alerted her attention, but the ripples suggested it was merely a fish. As she led the white mare along the creek, Stardust occasionally grabbed bites of vegetation growing along the banks. Tall grasses and shrubs seemed more than suitable for the horse even though they were sparse.

Sayana stopped abruptly. There was a tingle in the air… or was it connected to the water? She dropped the reins of the horse, knowing that Stardust wouldn’t go too far. There was certainly something unnatural about this place, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. The Eypharian closed her eyes and tried to empty her mind. Black black emptiness. That was all that mattered. And if she could just reach for her djed. A bright flame appeared in her mind and suddenly she felt like she had grasped her magic. Now she just had to open her senses, make them see more…

She first felt an electric shiver run up over her arms. There was something, strong auras. Sayana opened her eyes and tried to focus on the river. There was movement, a swirling of colours but it was thin, hardly an inch off the surface of the stream. She instead focused on some of the nearby plants her horse had been eating. As she tried to focus, there was nothing. Trying harder, it felt empty, like a void, and then she could see a thick black fog covering it and…

“You should be mindful of your horse. These mushrooms are not the friendly sort.”

Sayana was jarred out of her concentration by the sudden voice. She looked up to see a rather beautiful woman tugging at the mare’s reins to steer the horse away from a patch of reddish fungi.

“Orletta. When in full bloom they make you see things you’ve always dreamed of, and also things that terrify you to your very bones.” The woman handed the reins over to Sayana who took them in her high hands.

“You ride? I haven’t seen you around these parts.” She was tall and looked well equipped for the barren land. There was a sword at her side and a shield strapped to her back. Sturdy boots and a protective yet flexible outfit.

“I do, but I only arrived yesterday,” Sayana explained. “I haven’t gotten a chance to look around much. Got caught up with a man named Gilldarey.”

“Oh Gill! He must have loved your arms.” The woman replied with a laugh. The ice seemed to break and a genuine smile burst forth upon her face. “My name is Riyanna. Warden of the Prairie.”

“Oh!” Sayana exclaimed in surprise. She hadn’t expected to meet the woman Gilldarey had mentioned. “I’m Sayana.” She introduced quickly. “So as a Warden, you look after the land?”

“The land, the people, the djed. It is not uncommon for an experiment to go awry and ravage the land with magic. But the living still needs to eat even if the dead forget such.”

Sayana gave a nod in wonder. So that’s why it looked so desolate. And why would the nuit care about the land if they didn’t need it to survive? Merely to do tests upon? During her pause of reflection there was a faint hint of movement near the river. Her eyes glanced in that direction, but there was nothing. Riyanna seemed to notice Sayana’s glance and stepped to the side curiously. There was another quiver amongst the tall grass and then she saw it. A blueish creature with long fin-like appendages readying to pounce…

Acting fast with hardly a moment’s hesitation, Sayana reached for the daggers at her hip, arming all her hands but the one holding the reins of her horse. In rapid succession, she let loose three throwing daggers aimed for the creature. It lunged just as the blades spun through the air. One dagger embedded itself into the creature’s chest while another scrapped its front leg. The third, however, plunged uselessly into the ground of the riverbank.

The beast yowled in pain, shortly followed by a whinny of fear from Stardust. In mere ticks, Riyanna had her sword out, but the creature dove into the water and was making its retreat. The Warden quickly scanned the area as if expecting to see more, but at last sheathed the weapon.

“I hate Lemekors.” Riyanna spat with distaste. “Fortunately they usually hunt alone.”

By now Sayana had calmed her horse and she made a grab for the dagger that had sunk into the ground. However, just as she was wiping it clean, specks of rain started to come down.

“You think it’s dead?” Sayana asked, squinting as more drops appeared.

“No. Those things don’t die easily. It’s probably so far inland hunting for small game. But with the weather being as it is, small animals have been scarce. At least there is still the fish that have continued spawning…”

“Fish that we eat? Or fish it’s going to snap up as it makes it upstream?” Sayana countered suddenly realizing just how vulnerable the land was here.

“Think you can catch it?” Riyanna asked, now looking at the Eypharian as if she was sizing her up.

“On Stardust I can catch up and probably kill it. But if it stays in the water…”

“I’ll handle the water.”

In moments the Warden had stripped of her clothes and gear. There was confusion in Sayana’s eyes, unsure whether she should mount up with Riyanna looking so bare. But then the Warden made a dive towards the river and in mid-air her body transformed into a giant fish with big sharp teeth.

For a moment Sayana just stared at the huge splash that had erupted from the water, completely at a loss for words. Then she regained her composure and leapt onto her horse and dug her heels in. Stardust surged into motion, hooves battering against the ground, and the sky above opened up in a torrent of rain.

Sayana galloped hard in the direction the Lemekor went. But after the first five chimes, she slowed down, scanning the banks acutely for signs of the creature. The rain kept coming down and her mare had mud halfway up her normally white legs. Vegetation seemed to cluster near the stream and the Eypharian wondered how well Riyanna was doing. A pointed grey fin answered her question and soon she was off at a trot once more.

Tracking along a river was hard enough, but tracking in the rain…? It was miserable to say the least, and yet her heart pounded with adrenaline. Pulling at the reins, she crouched down and spurred the horse onwards. They were going to find this creature. One way or another.

A particularly muddy patch ahead cause Sayana to slow down as she sat back in the saddle and reined in her mare. But even as she slowed her horse, she caught sight of sharp looking paw prints leading away from the stream. A couple of low shrubs looked like they had be sliced cleanly, forgotten flowers lying untouched upon the muddy ground. The Lemekor had been here.

Sayana dismounted but the rain made it hard to see more than a few meters. She now just had two throwing daggers and two regular sized ones. All were drawn and held in her high and mid hands. A small half-print marked the trail and she continued along. More sliced grasses and then…

The creature lunged at her quickly and it was all she could do to duck and avoid the sharp fins coming at her. Stardust reared and as the Lemekor struck again Sayana thrust her dagger deep into its chest. With snapping jaws in her face, she kept it at bay with her high hands, just long enough to give the fatal wrenching twist of her dagger.

Even as the monster stiffened up and went still, it was a gruesome death as blood and guts streamed out of it. The rain was little mercy to wash out the entrails and keep the smell at bay. Once satisfied that the Lemekor was no more, Sayana withdrew the dagger and wiped it clean before tending to her horse.

“Impressive. We could use someone like you.” Riyanna was back and clad in nothing, like the day she was born.

It was one of the few occasions in which Sayana felt herself blush, heat rising to her cheeks.

“As a Warden?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet. As a Warden Initiate.”

There was something about Riyanna’s smile that disconcerting. Like there were too many sharp teeth crammed in there than what was actually possible. Now that Sayana wasn’t fighting for her life, she could feel the rain soaking through her clothes. The offer was tempting. She liked it out in the wilds, fending for herself, fighting off the challenges that awaited her, yet at the same time…

“Gilldarey said he would teach me. Promised I could become his apprentice as long as I helped him with his experiments.”

“You believe old Gilly? Don’t let his looks deceive you. How long do you think he’ll take to be done with his tests? A season? A year? Ten years? He’s got the charm, and his skill in glyphing isn’t half bad but he’s not about to just hand out free lessons.”

“And you are?” Sayana countered in a skeptical tone. She had certainly noticed Riyanna’s proficiency in morphing, unless it had all been some sort of illusion.

“No. I won’t. But if you’re an Initiate then you’re working for it. And only when I think you’re ready.”

Sayana mused over the idea. It irked her to have been fooled by the charming nuit, but how was she to know that Riyanna wasn’t tricking her too.

“Does today count?”

There was a pause and then a toothy grin. “Yes. As long as you help me take the remains of this Lemekor and bring them back to the Citadel. They will be in high demand by the maledictors.”

Sayana glanced at the woman quizzically, but then let it be. She took off her cloak and placed it on ground next to the beast, the carefully rolled it on top. The strange fins were incredibly sharp, but the cloth helped protect them as the two hoisted the creature up onto the horse’s saddle. Riyanna disappeared for a few chimes and soon returned garbed in her earlier clothes and equipment.

By the time they reached the Citadel, the rain had just about stopped and Sayana shivered in the cold. Regardless, she had found her place in this forsaken island. Tamer of the wilds and guardian of the testing grounds.

“I expect a sizable catch of fish in the next few days. There’s not many of us, but we still have mouths to feed.” Riyanna spoke with a toothy smile before departing with a wave.

Comments:
I love your description of the island. It felt real to me, and it was in-tune with what I have imagined. However, certain parts of this felt a bit rushed. I could tell that you were dying to get to certain parts of the story. Patience, my Padawan. ;)

I didn't give full points for your daggers, just because you're already so high in skill and there wasn't any new learning going on.

Don't forget to delete your post in the grading queue. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to PM me about your grade.
