10th of Winter, 516 AV

Sloane woke slowly, her mind sluggishly making it's way back to the land of the living, feeling almost as if her body and mind had a disconnect to bridge and mend. She ached all over, her muscles strained and tense, her skin bruised. The skin over her knees, elbows and hands was raw and broken in place's, still healing from the various tumbles and falls she'd taken in the Sea of Grass. Groaning, the young woman rolled onto her front, burrowing her face into her bed roll and wrapping her arms over her head. The previous days had been nothing but fear, pain and panic, to the point that Sloane was left totally drained and emotionally exhausted. She simply wanted to be left alone.

It was not to be however, and the low noise of her tent flap opening and closing caught Sloane's attention. She hurriedly pushed herself up and flipped over, drawing her knees up to her chest protectively. She felt safer with the Firelash Pavilion than she had in day's, surrounded by powerful and competent horse-lords, with little risk of bandits or animals getting to her, but the Pavilion brought a whole slew of new fears for Sloane. The foremost of those fear's was the men; they were large and rough, hardened by decades spent surviving in the Sea of Grass, and Sloane knew that she'd have no chance of stopping or deterring them should they decide that she was a target after all. It was only Whayhana though, and Sloane relaxed, body unfurling from its protective position slowly as the older woman ducked under the flap, allowing it to fall closed behind her. As far as she could tell, Hana was the only member of the Pavilion that could speak Common with any reliability, and the older woman seemed to have taken it upon herself to help welcome and settle the younger woman, taking her under her wing.

"Morning meal." She said in her deep, soft voice, holding out a wooden plate laden with meat and flatbread. Sloane accepted it hurriedly, stomach growling, but paused before eating it. "Thank you." She tried, her Pavi weak, and her Grassland sign even worse. Hana reached out and corrected her with gentle hands, but shook her head slowly. "No need sign. Formal sign only." She murmured, but looked appreciative anyway. Sloane nodded and dug into her food, expecting the other woman to leave. Hana didn't however, and watched silently, clearly waiting for Sloane to finish so that they could speak more.

Swallowing her last bite, Sloane set her plate aside, raising her brows questioningly at Hana. "Must talk about you." The other woman started, motioning with her hands for Sloane to turn. Frowning with confusion she did so, wriggling around until her back faced Hana. She felt the woman scoot closer, her hands reaching out to pull her hair so that it all laid against her back, finger combing it out.

"You have skills? Good at something?" Hana questioned, beginning to tug her hair around into a braid. Sloane's eye's watered as the other woman worked. On the surface she seemed merely curious, as if she was only try to make conversation, but Sloane knew better than that. Already she had learnt that teamwork was incredibly important to the Drykas people, with even the children and the elderly expected to pitch in. She knew that nothing less would be expected of her. "I'm a bowyer. You know, like bows? Arrows?"

Hana paused, humming thoughtfully. "You make that?" She questioned, pointing over Sloane's shoulder to where her short bow was leaning up against the wall of the tent. Yes. Sloane signed, holding her hands up high enough so that Hana could see. The Drykas patted her shoulder approvingly, before going back to the braid. "You will work then. Make bows for Ruby Clan." Hana pronounced the Clan's name slowly, and Sloane repeated it after her, and then did so again a half dozen time's under her breath. She wasn't sure how she felt about being instructed to work from a Pavilion that had seemingly assisted in kidnapping her. After a short pause Sloane decided to test her boundaries, twisting to glance at Hana as the older woman tied off her braid.

"What if I want to leave?" Sloane questioned, her voice low and careful. Hana looked surprised, but after a moment her face relaxed and she shrugged gently. "Okay. But you leave horse, tent, supplies... Won't survive, too weak." She stated, shaking her head. Sloane was admittedly a bit offended that the woman had such little faith in her, but ultimately she understood. She wasn't in Syliras anymore, and the Sea of Grass was plagued by dangers, both sentient and bestial.

She didn't want to be here. She had left her home and her family in order to start her own life, to be fully independent and to fend for herself. This, however, hadn't exactly been what she pictured. She had planned to settle in Kenash, to take a loan and open her own store to expand her craft, but instead found herself stranded, surrounded by a city of strange people, most of which didn't even share the same language as her.

While lost in thought, Hana's daughters Yane and Kina took it upon themselves to bust into the tent. They were giggling and shouting in Pavi, apparently informing their mother of something that had happened in the camp. Sloane couldn't help but smile, the young girls were charming and sweet. The two finally turned their attention on Sloane, and all but tackled the woman, laughing and gibbering in Pavi. It took them a moment to remember that the woman couldn't understand them, and slowed for a moment. "Pretty walahk!" Yane chirped tugging at Sloane's braid for emphasis, Kina nodding vigorously in agreement. Sloane glanced at Hana uncertainly, who simply shook her head slowly, her strong feature's softened by fond affection.

"Hana, you... teach, uh, Pavi?" Sloane tried, cringing slightly as the twin's burst into a fit of giggles, and then went ahead to correct her signs. Hana smiled, reaching out to squeeze Sloane's shoulder. "Yes, I help. Little bit everyday, you learn quickly. Don't worry." Sloane smile wobbled, overwhelmed and grateful for this show of kindness from someone who was practically a total stranger. "I show you Drykas way of life too."

Yane chimed in again, her high voice warbling along rapidly, her sister nodding along. Sloane laughed as Kina shoved her sister, and then jumped on her back, taking hold of her braids as Yane neighed and reared like a horse, and scampered out of the tent. Hana was laughing too, and pushed herself back into a crouch. "Yane and Kina help teach too." She chuckled, before turning and making her way after her daughter's.

Reaching back, Sloane touched her braid distractedly. It was tied in intricate knots over her head, falling into a long plait at the base of her neck. It was the same as she'd seen many Drykas women wear, and warmth sparked in her chest to think of Hana dedicating time and effort to help the walahk fit in, if only a little.
