☾ 65th of Spring A.V. 517 ☽

Aliana brushed out her hair before looking down at her expanded belly. Making a face, the woman chastised herself at how foolish she had been. Getting up the girl walked to her bag and got some clothes, dressed, and walked pulled on her shoes lacing them up. Thankfully the child had not grown very big, so it was not as hard to do everyday things. That ranged anywhere from working in the forge to getting dressed in the mornings. Looking out the window for a moment, she shook her head and decided to leave her jacket at her room. Grabbing her purse, the woman secured it to her hip and snatched up her keys before leaving for the day. Boots pounded across the wooden floors as the Isur made her way determinedly down to the front desk. The woman needed some kind of dog that would make noise when the door to her shop opened, or she would never know when anyone arrived. Since she had not explored the city much before setting up and getting comfortable in her business; the woman would need someone to tell her where to go in order to find what she was seeking.

“Ah good morning Aliana. My look how big you have gotten since you arrived,” Fiskari called as the woman walked over.

“Good morning to you as well. You wouldn't by any chance know where I can acquire a dog around the city do you?” Aliana asked skeptically.

“Sure I do. Check with Kavala at The Sanctuary just outside the city gates,” Fiskari stated and waved good bye when the woman walked off.

Aliana immediately committed the names to memory and walked out the door saying a quick good bye in Isurian without even knowing it. Hurrying along the streets, the woman made a slight face noticing how much harder it was to breath while pregnant. If she ever met Epifanio again, the woman planned to break his jaw into a million pieces. The Isur had taken on a much harder edge after being so gullible the first time around. The next time though she planned to be prepared from the start. Of course, the woman did not know of many men who would take a woman already with child. Looking around, she was amazed at the larger blue men that littered the cities streets turning them from grey to blue. Some were even a purple color, the girl could not help but wonder if there was any females of the same skin tone. Stopping for a moment, the expectant mother took several deep breaths forcing herself to keep going no matter what.

“Come on. You need to get this done today,” Aliana growled to herself and kept walking.

It took almost twenty chimes to make it to the city gates. Walking up the woman explained to the two guards her intentions for going out of the protection of the walls. Agreeing one pointed her in the right direction for the business she sought. Looking up at the sign, she entered hearing all the animals. Calling out the woman called Kavala's name so that she could hear above the other noises. Waving away a bee or two, the girl did not show much uncomfortableness around the insects.

Unexpected Surprises

It took roughly two miles of walking north after crossing through the gates and leaving the mighty Bluevein River behind for Aliana to come to a small road branching off the Kabrin Road. There was a lovingly hand lettered sign that had the words Animal Healer and Breeder underneath a clearly spelled out The Sanctuary Logo. The logo was a horse head with the horse facing the viewer. It was stylized and worn by both weather and perhaps people touching it.

Image

The edges of the sign included carved paw prints, bird prints, and tracks of all other sorts encircling its thick surface. The sign was driven into the ground and indicated with an arrow that one should exit the Kabrin and head towards the sea on this small little cart trail.

The Kabrin Road was in a thickly wooded part of the Fringe Forest. So too was this trail that was little more than a cart track. It wove unassumingly through the woods towards the sea until it came out on vast fields that grew between the actual forest and what looked to be a massive cliff overlooking the sea. A compound, more like a fortress, rose up in front of Aliana, one that would often remind a viewer of a giant beast perched on the cliffs above the sea. It was walled with ten food high walls though its wrought iron gate stood open in the front. She could see a courtyard and an arena beyond.

There were two signs, one hung on the gate, and one set out on the trail that continued around the facility. The one hanging on the gate simply read "Horse Gate" while the sign had another arrow pointing at the track around the facility. That sign said 'Healing Gate" with an arrow. It was more than likely that the place had two entrances, one for its stables business and one for its healing business.

The Isur woman could walk through the horse gate if she liked or walk around to the other gate, whichever she felt was more appropriate.

Aliana could see a Konti woman working with horses in the arena in the distance. Wearing tall boots and what appeared to be Akalak style leathers, the woman was stripped down to just a thin sleeveless tunic and was putting what appeared to be young though monstrously large horses through their paces.

"Walk... Walk... no Walk.." The woman's gentle voice coaxed. But it wasn't the horses that drew the Isur's attention. At the Konti's feet sat a massive Imperial Watcher as black as night. It sat passively at her feet, following the horse with its ears though its eyes were tilted up at the woman's face.

If Aliana decided to enter the horse gate, the woman working the young horses would turn and greet her from the middle of the arena. Offering a friendly wave, she'd release her attention off the young horse she seemed to be lunging without any tack or even without the aid of a whip and walk over.

"Hi there. I'm Kavala Denusk. How can I help you today?"
Kavala said, opening the gate and letting herself and the dog out. Noting no horse and the swell of Aliana's stomach, Kavala wouldn't leave her standing.

There was a nice bench in the shade. There were several in fact in the shadow of the stables that flanked the small courtyard. Kavala would recognize the Isur immediately for what she was... an Isur and Pregnant. No matter what the race, too much time on one's feet wasn't good.

"Please.. sit. Can I get you some cool well water to drink? You didn't walk here from town did you?" Kavala fussed, worried about the woman. If the woman allowed it the Konti would gently grasp her elbow and urge her kindly towards both the shade and the bench. There was a horse trough flanking both sides of the courtyard, very near where the benches were. A ladle hung off the one near the bench Kavala steered Aliana towards. Without waiting for an answer, Kavala was over at the well head pumping it to work the water upwards and let it run briefly into the trough before she used the ladle to capture some of the fresh cold water and offer it to the obviously tired woman.

Unexpected Surprises

The two mile hike had taken more out of the Isur than she was willing to admit. Taking several deep long breaths, the woman put her hand on her stomach where the baby was growing feeling a sharp kick. Smiling some while it was hidden by distance alone, the girl made a note to inquire about a horse as well while talking about the dogs. Once the pain settled down, she made her way deeper into the building.

Stopping at several different gated areas, the woman looked in at the animals and different handlers. Calling over to the young girl, she watched as the young red headed woman walked up introducing herself as Rune Stonesong. Giving her own name in response the dark haired Isur asked the whereabouts of Kavala within the building. Looking in the direction, Rune pointed the girl gave her thanks before walking over allowing the girl to get back to her work.

Yawning some the woman found herself growing more and more tired as the day went on. She was dreading the walk back with a new animal in tow. Popping her neck the woman looked on as the Konti before her easily controlled the horses. There was very few that did not need any kind of assistance getting the large beasts to listen. Her eyes moved down to the large solid black dog beside her legs. Aliana moved back out of the way as the woman walked over introducing herself.

“I am Aliana Hilt,” the woman said.

She was surprised when the woman began to lead her over to a bench. Sitting down gently, the girl sighed gently nodding when offered some water. Taking the ladle with a slightly shaky hand, dark eyes looked up at the beautiful woman stating her thanks. Drinking of it in order to catch her breath, the woman cleared her voice before explaining her visit.

“I am looking to buy a dog to watch over my shop and baby during work hours,” Aliana explained, “yes, I did. I have been on house rest for a while, so I thought the walk would do me some good.”

Handing the ladle back over to the woman, the young Isur inquired about what kind of dogs would do for her needs. Nodding gently the girl listened closely thinking over what would need to be gotten and how to return home. The woman winced some when the baby kicked again making her presence known.

“Excuse the strange faces. Please continue, the baby is just very active today,” Aliana said gently rubbing her side gently.

"Nice to meet you, Aliana. You mentioned a shop. What sort of shop is it?" Kavala asked, curious as to what sort of work Aliana did. She could guess several things based on Aliana's race, but narrowing them down from there could be problematic. Isur were incredible smiths, but some made armor, some made tools, and some were incredible weaponssmiths. Of course, the woman could just be a baker or perhaps a florist for all Kavala knew. But her hands... Kavala had touched them escorting her to the bench and handing her the ladle. They were rough like she worked hard for a living.

"As for dogs, we have just one breed nowadays. In my early stages, I tried to breed quite a few, but I really just came down to admiring one breed. I have three children, and they are very very protective and respectful of our young. They guard my livestock, and watch the property well. Have you heard of Imperial Watchers? Their size matches their intelligence, so I fear you will have to feed them like you'd be feeding another person. But as for protection, there's nothing better in the dog world." The Konti said, not in a bragging way, but in a sincere way that meant she really felt what she was saying was the truth.

Kavala placed her fingers to her lips and gave a sharp piercing whistle. She waited a moment and a few deep gruff whoofs could be heard before three very large dogs came around the corner. They were tall, elegant, and heavily built. One was black, one was almost solid white, and one was a riot of slashed colors that Kavala pointed out was Harlequin. "I have more of them, but these three have weened pups this year and are allowed to roam since their duty as mothers is done. The males get even bigger. I sold all of the white and all of the black's litter. But the Harlequin has some fully trained young dogs left from hers. I have males and females in just about any color. They are already trained and named, but you can gradually switch their names and training over to whatever suits you best." Kavala said, greeting each dog affectionately. They mugged her for a moment then all laid down at her feet, watching both women carefully. They weren't unfriendly.

The dogs were relaxed because Kavala was. Watchful, their eyes shone with intelligence. One kept opening its mouth as if it were going to speak, but the Konti Healer kept giving it a meaningful stern look and it never seemed to follow through with either a bark or whatever it was about to do.

The dogs occupied Kavala's attention for a few moments until glancing at Aliana, the Konti saw her belly twitch again.

"Your baby is very active. When is your due date? You look very very close to term. Sometimes strong exercise like a long walk can bring on an early birth. You sure you're okay?" Kavala had helped many Drykas birth their babies, but she'd never helped an Isur. She wondered, for a moment, if the father was of the same race of if this was a mixed race baby. Mixes often were unpredictable in their outcomes.

“A weapon shop,” Aliana stated in response to her question.

Aliana nodded as the woman spoke about the animals and their current breeding schedule. She made a mental note to ask if she would need the dog back during breeding season again. Trained eyes looked at the dogs as they bounded out before sitting tall, the woman was amazed and very impressed with them. One kept trying to make a noise, but would stop when Kavala looked at it. A strong kick made a very easy to see bump appear for a few moments before disappearing once again. The woman snickered when the mother asked about her due date. Clearing her voice some, the Isur sat up straight once more peering up at the young woman.

“I would not know. I have not been to see a healer since I figured out I am to bear a child. Needless to say it was rather embarrassing how I found myself in this predicament. The father is gone, so I relocated many miles from the place of his birth and mine,” Aliana stated, “now I am looking for a female of solid color.”

Aliana tried her best to keep away from the topic of Epifanio if she could. A groan escaped her lips making them curl some at the pain, blowing some air our of her nose she once again returned up right. She snickered some shaking her head before looking up at the other woman with her.

“Seems to be any day now. The kicks are coming much closer today than they have been in the past,” Aliana explained.

The woman did not know that earlier in her walk, her water had already broken. With in a fit of coughing as had become usual in the dust covered walk, the girl's water had spilled on to the ground from under her skirt. Though she had thought it was just another weak bladder moment from the child deciding to kick her kidneys again.

They were talking about a mixture of dogs and babies. Aliana spoke of her life as if it happened to someone else, and that made Kavala very sad. She often had very little empathy for people, preferring Kelvics and Animals outright to the creatures that walked upright on two legs. But being a mother herself, she understood how sometimes detachment helped. "A weapons shop? You are a blacksmith then? I've been meaning to learn the art myself, for various reason, but I have yet to really find the time. Spring here is the busiest season with all the babies being born. And since I've seen a lot of babies coming and going, I'd say yours is on its way. Do you mind if I take a closer look at you?" The Konti said, nodding as the woman stated she wanted a solid colored dog.

"Ink here is an Imperial Watcher. He's good at observing and being watchful without being obtrusive. Black dogs tend to blend into the shadows more than the Harlequin colors do. I do enjoy a splash of color though. Ink has made fine babies, both solid and splashed."
Kavala said as she rose to once more look closer at Aliana.

"She's in labor." The dog stated simply. He sniffed, nudged her leg, and gave it a lick. "I smell fluid from the baby sack all over her legs." He added in a deep gruff voice. Aliana could hear the dog speak as plain as day.

Kavala looked concerned. "Your water already broke? Why didn't you say anything? Wait.. is this your first child?" She asked, halting what she was doing and taking Aliana's hand. "Come on. I know just where to take you. Can you walk... its not far." The Konti said, leading the protesting or not Isurian Woman alongside her. They skirted the arena and walked around to a giant set of double doors that opened easily at the touch. Kavala wanted Aliana someplace stable as fast as she could get her because if Ink was right, the baby might be having trouble.

"It's only a little further." The Konti said, taking the Isurian Shopkeeper into the tunnel system that turned out to be a giant ramp spiraling downward. They passed by an offshoot, then another, before entering a great room and kitchen that more resembled a tavern than anything, and crossing that passed into a hall. At the end of the hall they turned left and walked the length of that hall which had doors on either side of it at regular intervals. At the end of that hall was a large arched opening that lead to an underground bathing pool.

"Here, lets get you out of your things and into the pool. Water births are far easier on the baby and you might just need all the 'easy' you can get before this is done." Kavala said, starting to tug the woman's clothing. If Aliana let her, she'd get her stripped down to nothing and have her lounging in the huge bathing pool in next to no time. Once she was settled, Kavala would run for her medical kit - the one designed for birthing - and be back in just a moment. She'd leave Ink to watch Aliana in case the woman needed anything.

Unexpected Surprises

“A weaponsmith actually, I specialize in weapon making, though I do have a little blacksmithing and armory under my belt. I am happy to show you some things come next season when your business has slowed some. I spotted the forge towards the back of your structure,” Aliana explained the difference between the two professions, “go ahead.”

The Isur was not bothered with anyone getting close to her normally. But medical professionals that knew the father would have judged her. At least this woman did not pry into her past like most people tended to do. The young woman looked at the black dog presented to her that the Konti had called Ink. A suitable name for one as black as the substance people write with. The woman made a note to check on her apprentice and the young girl that worked the front desk. She liked the thought of the dog able to blend in with the darkness around the forge. A crazy look graced her face when the dog began openly speaking to them. Everything in her said to just walk out, but she ignored it trusting the owner.

“I didn't know? Yes, it is. I believe so,” Aliana stated and got up following the girl.

She seemed to become more frantic after the dog spoke. The woman planned to get answers after everything calmed down some. Another sharp pain hit causing her to stop for a few chimes before continuing on, the woman had been taught for most of her life to power through pain. No matter what happened the discomfort would end shortly; she just had to push past it. The thought of pushing made another wave of nausea hit her as they arrived at a pair of doors. Panting the young woman noticed suddenly that Ink had followed them all the way. Taking a deep steadying breathe, she allowed the Konti to undress her. Shortly after the woman put her in the water then rushed off some where.

The blonde haired woman had spoke of an easy birthing. Did such things often end up not easy? Was there truly any danger in the fact she had worked up until the last week, then made the two mile walk out to the building? Surely the woman was just trying to freak her out, but in the back of her mind the mother wondered if she had hurt the child. No matter what had happened between the Isur and Vantha, the little one was innocent. The girl would not be able to look at the child as it grew, if she had hurt it by being hard headed. As the woman felt the water hit in her a sigh left her body; it was not long before Kavala had returned with some kind of box. Looking at it funny the mother let out a pained cry when the first hard contraction hit.

“Shyke!” Aliana growled putting a hand on her stomach. The painful process was suddenly becoming very real.

Unexpected Surprises

Postby Kavala on June 25th, 2017, 3:55 pm

Kavala was surprised at how calm Aliana seemed. Calmness was an Isur trait though. It had been something Kavala had respected in Emaneus a great deal. He was simply almost meditatively calm under fire and in the heat of battle. She had attributed it to his priestly station, but maybe it was a racial trait as well.

She got Aliana in the bath at The Sanctuary, which was a rather large communal pool that inhabited a cave deep in the facility. Kavala had done the pipping itself, so that warm thermal water flowed into one end of the pool and continuously flowed out a far end keeping the bathing water clean. It emptied out onto a pile of rip rap that she’d created in excavating some of The Sanctuary’s underground, so that the rip rap filtered the hot water before it washed back into the sea.

Aliana would find the temperature hot, but not scalding, hovering right around her own body temperature. It would sooth her travel worn muscles and immediately relax her if she let it, doing its important work between contractions. It would also more importantly wash away all of Aliana’s travel dust and sweat, cleaning her up immediately so she could focus on the baby and not on distractions.

The woman would find the pool not exactly deep. It would still leave a tall Akalak’s head above water. But in the center it was deeper. Around the edge there was a wide shelf that allowed someone to sit in the water and lean back, relaxing their heads against cushions that were periodically hung off the edge partially in the water.

While Kavala was gone Ink watched Aliana intently, keeping one eye on the Isurian Woman and one ear cocked towards the door. Kavala wasn’t long. She’d taken a short cut through her chambers and up into the clinic to get not only her birthing kit, but to grab one of her assistants to make sure the woman got a room ready for Aliana and the baby, complete with finding her a crib. The Konti came back with a leather case and several other things in her hands, spilling them all by the edge of the pool before she too stripped and hopped in. Kavala laid her hands on Aliana’s stomach, focused her gnosis, and took a look internally to see how the pair were doing. As far as she could tell there was no injury, nothing off, and the birth was progressing normally.

Then, Kavala dunked her head under and gently asked Aliana to give her access by pushing at her thighs so she could get a good look at Aliana’s vagina. She couldn’t see much, so she rose, took something from her kit, and returned to her exam. With the quick use of a speculum, Kavala got a good look at Aliana’s cervix and backed out, coming back to the surface to report to the patient. “You are about halfway dilated. It could be chimes or it could be hours. There are things I can do to ease your pain now, but there was far more I could have done earlier. Now it’s a bit too late. I can just work on managing the cramps as they come. I don’t recommend pushing yet, not until you are fully dialated. We’ll take a look in a half bell if you haven’t progressed much, and see what we can do. Until then, sit back, relax, and lets just talk…..”

Kavala said, rubbing the woman’s engorged stomach. As far as she could tell the baby was head down and in an excellent position for birth. By palpating the area, she could just about locate his or her entire body, the occasional foot pressed outward on Aliana’s stomach assisting her determination.

Kavala laughed the second time she saw the baby kick. “He or She is ready to be born I think. Seems a little impatient to me. What were you hoping for? A boy or a girl? And do you have any names picked out?” Kavala asked as she continued to examine Aliana, checking her for any wounds and using caution although she was sure things were fine.

“Just relax. The more you relax the easier the contractions will be. We’ll start seeing all kinds of things too… don’t worry if it happens that you bleed or your bowels or bladder moves. All this is normal. The water will swirl anything away. Just be relaxed. The little one will be here shortly I suspect.”
Kavala added, moving to Aliana’s side and taking one of her hands. Waiting, in cases like this, were some of the hardest work healers had to do.

Panting gently the woman tried to focus on breathing and relaxing the muscles in her back. Though every time she tried another wave of pain would course through her. Making a face, the girl tried to move to where it would be a little more comfortable. However, it did not appear to be working no matter what she did. A noise caused her to look over and see the Konti return from where ever it was that she had disappeared to. Soon both women were naked as the day they were born, yet neither seemed to mind in the least. As an Isur clothing had always been optional growing up, women were not ashamed of showing what they had in her race as some other races was. Feeling a hand on her leg, the woman opened them so that the girl could do whatever it was that would help the baby come out. Seeing the strange device getting grabbed the woman felt her heart speed up. Jerking back some the girl allowed herself to be guided back into position with a gentle hand. Wincing the woman make a face at the sudden intrusion. A groan escaped when, the other surfaced and said she was only half way there.

“This is going to be a very long process,” Aliana groaned popping her neck.

She had never been a big fan of pain while growing up. Though it seemed to be in every part of her life no matter what it cost. Sighing the girl tried to lean back and listen to the healer. It suddenly dawned on her that the pale skinned woman was from the tiny little isle off the main land. Her father had once shown her a map of where they traded with, however it had been many many years since any metal went to Konti Isle. Turning to her when she sat beside her the girl could not keep from asking.

“Why did you leave your home?” Aliana asked looking at her curiously.

Another contraction hit making the woman almost double over in pain. They were getting stronger and closer together now making the girl pant some. Rubbing the spot where a small foot appeared, she turned back to Kavala trying to take her mind off of the pain in her abdomen. Everything in her just wanted to push as hard as she could in order to get the little one out and make it all end. But she would not harm the baby no matter what, even if the young woman isn't prepared for this it didn't matter. Aliana had already decided to ask Kavala to help her raise the child and teach her how to be a mother. Surely the Konti would have the answers that the Isur didn't. Realizing that asking about her past may be a touchy subject the girl turned back to her once more.

“That's if you want to tell me. I know not everyone's reasons are pleasant,” Aliana stated gently.

Unexpected Surprises

The healer offered the Isur a smile. "You'd be surprised. Sometimes these little ones decide to be born and then nothing gets in their way. You are dilated enough that it shouldn't be too much longer. Just relax, let the water hold you... feel calm, Aliana. Women give birth every day. Our mothers did just fine. And I promise the pain will be nothing next to the joy of holding your son or daughter in your arms for the first time. It will be so long forgotten. I have three children, two sons and a daughter, so I know what I'm talking about." Kavala said, moving to the edge of the bathing chamber to lay out more towels. She slipped out of the water to light more candles, some of which filled the chamber with the rich scent of vanilla. A small brazier was lit which Kavala also added fragrant crushed rose petals.

The Konti had a calmness about her, a certainty, that infused the room as she moved around setting things to right. She laid out a basket that had her tools lined up in case there was problems. Sharp instruments were laid out on towels in case they were needed. And a small basket of baby suitable bathing aides were moved over to where Aliana lounged.

"I was never born on Mura. I know most people think Konti are from there. But really, Aliana, we move all over. My mother was a healer and had a strong Call to the Sea of Grass. We Konti feel them throughout our lives... an urging or a prompting to do something or go somewhere and we must obey. So my mother went, fell in love with a Drykas man, married into his Pavilion as a third wife, and eventually had me. Konti can't have status in Drykas society beyond perhaps a third wife or so because we cannot bear human children, only Konti daughters. I was raised among the Drykas.... a fish out of water." The Konti explained as she slipped back into the water.

She laid a hand on Aliana's stomach and seemed to be focused on watching or contractions. The Isur didn't cry out or seem in distress so she visually watched, wanting to time them and see how far apart they were.

"I was Called to Mura when I was a teenager. I went with the blessing of my father. I had no status unless I could learn a trade, and though I'd picked up a great deal of healing from my mother, I still wasn't formally trained. I trained there, though the medicine of animals was far more interesting to me than the medicine of people. They are neglected in favor of the welfare of people. I studied there for a while and on my return to the Sea of Grass was captured by slavers. I was saved eventually by Akalaks. They sold me into the Nakivak program here and I bore them two offspring to pay off my debt to their culture. I just never left. I found Riverfall suited me. And I built a home here." Kavala said, shifting around and nodding to herself.

"Do you have any urges to push? If you do I want you to start gently pushing. And while you are waiting for the contractions... push only when they start happening, not between them, you can tell me how you ended up in Riverfall if you don't mind sharing." Kavala said, then stroked Aliana's belly again.

The woman was progressing fast. The contractions were less than five minutes apart and unless there were complications, the baby would be arriving soon. Kavala laid her hand on Aliana's side, then traced the outline of her stomach, nodding as she felt for the baby and sensed nothing but the normal distress of a child being positioned by a woman's body to slide down the birth canal.

Though she wouldn't verify it before she saw the physical form, Kavala was convinced the child had a very feminine personality. She could feel her, determined, a little nervous, but eager for what came next in life.
