Supplies and Breakfast

Postby Ashka on June 22nd, 2017, 12:48 am

22 Summer 517, morning

Ashka crawled out of the tent into the early morning light and looked across the strip of beach to make sure that her canoe was still safe. She'd pulled it up as high as she could yesterday but she still didn't know the coast or the tides well enough to judge how high would be needed. The canoe was still there and she sighed with relief. A rummage through their supplies revealed that they had the makings for tea, but little else in the way of food. She had helped with offloading the ship cargo yesterday though, and a lot of had gone to what looked like a shop. She supposed she could go and buy some food to keep them fed until they had a chance to fish and gather their own.

Chaya chose that moment to poke her tousled head out of the tent, blink drowsily at Ashka, and ask, "Ash, I'm hungry. What's for breakfast?"

"Whatever we can get from the shop, or find," Ashka said, crouching to bring herself down to Chaya's level. "Do you want to come, or stay here and gather driftwood for the fire?" She would have bet on Chaya coming, rather than be left behind yet again. After everyone and everything else they knew had rapidly vanished, Chaya didn't seem to want to let Ashka out of her sight for fear that she would vanish too. Now she came scrambling out of the tent to join Ashka on the beach. "I'm coming!"

Ashka grinned and straightened. She tucked a purse with some mizas in it into her sash, stuffed an empty sack into her backpack, slung the backpack up onto her back, and finger-combed her hair back from her face. "All right. Let's go breakfast hunting... I think the Mercantile is this way." She started across the sand towards a building on stilts, hoping that she'd remembered correctly from the unloading.

Supplies and Breakfast

Ashka led the way up into the Mercantile and looked around. There were baskets and bags and boxes and... Chaya tugged at her sleeve and pointed. "Look, Ash! Boots! All lined up like an invisible centipede!" Chaya bounced off to dance along the row of jungle boots, and Ashka heard a chuckle from off to her left. She turned and saw another girl there, perhaps a handful of years older than she was, smiling at Chaya's antics.

Ashka opened her mouth to apologise, but the other girl beat her to it. "It's ok, we don't usually get children in here - there aren't any in the settlement. It's nice to see someone enjoying it so much." She turned the smile on Ashka. "I'm Juli Chaliva, I run the Mercantile for my father. Are you looking for anything in particular?"

"I'm Ashka, and my sister is Chaya," Ashka half turned back to keep an eye on her sister. "I was - just looking for a few basic food items to tide us over, I guess. We only got here yesterday, and haven't had time to forage yet, and, well, she's a growing kid. She gets hungry."

Juli nodded. "You can cook, I take it?" and when Ashka nodded an affirmative, she started pointing out some of the options. "We just restocked yesterday - but you know that, you must have come in on the Veronica too - so we have more variety. We've got an open sack of rice, and another of flour. I can measure you out a smaller amount from the sacks if you haven't much storage space. There are pots of lard from the last pig that was processed, and cheeses. Most of the bread from the Tidepool's kitchen gets sold directly by them, and I traded the last ham away for a pile of foraged fruit and vegetables a few days back. Someone brought in a basket of eggs recently, though."

Supplies and Breakfast

Ashka considered the options and began choosing stores and watching the stack grow on the counter. She kept an eye on the size of the pile, knowing that she would have to carry it back to their camp, and not wanting to spend more money than she had to before she had a chance to earn more. Glancing over to check on Chaya, she saw the younger girl pick a banana off a pile of fruit and hold it in front of her mouth like a giant smile. Ashka couldnt help but grin back. "All right, add it to the pile, Chaya," she told her sister, and the kid bounced over to do so.

Ashka went on picking out things until she had as much as she could afford, and then dug the mizas out of her purse and set them on the counter. As she loaded up her backpack and sack for the journey back to camp, she took the opportunity to ask, "I'm a weaver - if I brought cloth or rope or fishing line, would that be tradeable for other things here?"

Juli considered the question. "I'll have to check with my father, of course, but I don't see why not. It would be one less thing to have to pay for in Riverfall. Have a good day!"

Ashka stopped at the foot of the mercantile and scooped up some dry leaves to use for tinder. Once they reached the tent, they both set down their loads and scavenged along the high tide mark until they had enough wood to cook over. They piled the wood on the sand, and then while Chaya ran off to refill the waterskin from a nearby stream, Ashka scooped out a shallow hollow in the sand, well clear of their tent and her canoe, and wedged pieces of wood into a pyramid shape. She licked a finger and held it up to feel which way the wind, if any, was blowing. Being wet all the way around, it would feel coldest on the side with the wind blowing against it. She moved round the fireplace so that the wind was behind her, stuffed the leaves in between two pieces of wood, and bent over it with flint and steel. It lit on the first try, with a little rush of coloured flames that made her wonder what the wood had been soaked in.

Supplies and Breakfast

When Chaya returned with the water, Ashka scooped some of the flour into one of their bowls, added a pinch of salt, and enough water to make a dough. As the first pieces of wood burned down into ash and coals, and were replaced with new ones, Ashka took a banana, cut a slit in the skin, and plunked it down among the ashes as it was, with her fingers crossed that the skin would be enough to protect it. She didn't have anything to wrap it in. Nor, she realised with a crooked grin, as she looked around the sandy cooksite, did she have anything to roll out the dough with or on. The only firm, flattish things were the plates from the picnic set.

She grimaced, missing the old galley she'd learned in once more, and then her stomach growled in protest. That decided her. She wasn't going to go searching for one. She'd just have to manage. She mounded up some sand to support the pan on the edge of the fire, scooped out a blob of lard and dropped it in the pan. It sat there unchanging for a moment and then slowly began to shrink as the pan warmed.

Ashka took a small piece of dough, rolled it into a ball and then squashed it flattish between her palms. That would have to do, she decided, setting it down and starting another. She was about halfway through the dough when she looked up and saw the that the lard had all melted and was beginning to smoke. She scrambled to drop disks of dough into it, and was rewarded with a scorching smell that made her wince. She snatched up a fork, dug it under the nearest one, and flipped it over. Yes, it had scorched more than cooked. She flipped the others too, and then had to rush to get the other half of the dough flattened into disks. At last she had a stack of them that looked cooked, some for now, some for later, and the bottom of the pan was dotted with burned bits of dough. She raked the blackend, ash-streaked banana out of the fire with the same fork and prised open the split skin. Inside it was cooked and gooey, and she slathered half the banana onto several of the disks and handed them to Chaya before doing the same for herself with the other half. When she bit down, the banana was all right, but the disks were burnt on the outside, doughy and flavourless in the middle, and only just edible.
