43rd of Fall, late morning

On this warm autumn morning, the Moving City was settling down again. The Conclave had guided their people near the banks of the Zeis river, although after the scorching heat of the past three seasons, of river it only had the name. Patches of yellowed grass bordered a stream of water so thin it seemed more accurate to call it a rivulet. Mud filled most of its bed, completely dried out by the banks, and the water still flowing in the middle barely reached two feet deep. Riding her grullo stallion along the river path, Ashka sighed with despondency at the view of what used to be a mighty and crucial body of water for the horseclans along the Run. If the drought continued, autumn wouldn't be any easier to go through than the previous seasons, and the Drykas girl wondered with concern how much longer her people would be able to hold against these rough conditions.

She shook her head off, refocusing her attention on the task at hand. There was nothing she could to change the weather or bring water back to the grasslands, her role was to help her Pavilion and others get through the season as best they could. With this in mind, Ashka set her gaze onto the surroundings, searching the riverbanks for resources that hadn't been lost to the summer's sweltering heat. Her eyes glanced over the stream, the thick and sun-bleached brushes scattered by its bank and the few other Drykas who had choosen to spend the morning hours here. She spotted several groups of idle children keeping themselves busy with various games but also a few lone foragers, determined to make the best of what Caiyha had to offer.

Ashka decided to ride a little further away; competing with others when she could just find her own area to scour was a waste of time and energy. She tightened her calves around Lako's flanks and leaned slightly forward, ordering the Strider to speed up and be on ther way. The pair trotted for a few chimes until Ashka assumed they had traveled far enough. The redhead clicked her tongue to ask for a halt, leaning back on the stallion's back in the same time, and when Lako stopped she rewarded him with a pat on the neck and dismounted.

This part of the river had remained calm and almost deserted by others so the Drykas set to scout the surroundings and consider her options. First, she inspected the low shrubs covering the banks, looking for plants she would recognise as edibles or useful in some sort of way. Ashka walked to the nearest bush that hadn't been entirely dried out by Syna's rays and kneeled by to examine its leaves and fruits. The stems were thorny vines, covered at regular intervals with short green spikes a lighter green than the stalk itself, and Ash had to carefully check where to put her fingers for a close observation of the berries the bush carried. Those were arranged in small grape-like clusters, soft to the touch, and most of them a faded red, although Ashka noticed a few black fruits. Getting hold of one of the dark ones, her brows raised in surprise when the berry came off the vine under the simple grasp of her fingers. She lifted it up, bringing it under her nose, and smelled its aroma to try and identify its type. Rich and slightly honeyed, the odor comforted the girl in the belief those could be eaten safely, but she wouldn't do it without the expertise of her mother. Instead of enjoying her newfound treat, Ashka decided to pick more and bring them back to the Pavilion, to share with others if they could be consumed without risk. She cupped a hand and worked with the other through the thick maze of stems and thorns, collecting as many black fruits as she could before stashing them in her open palm. The task proved to be easy and after a few chimes of rummaging in the bush, she was the proud possessor of a large handful of blackberries.
