Looking into the Mist (Solo)

69 Winter, 510 AV
Location: Wilderness just outside of Ravok

Aello was leaning against the bark of a white birch tree. The bark was gray, and covered in large black lines and splotches here and there. The tree was relatively thin, just enough for her quiver to brush up against, and support her back as she sat cross-legged on the cold forest floor before it. The tree was bare, no leaves hung in its upper branches, which weren't tall enough to reach as high as most of the other trees that surrounded it. The tree's trunk was rather thin, making Aello think that it couldn't be too old, or too sturdy at all. The fact that she was a small person using it for support was probably a good thing, considering how if someone any larger than her used it for a support, they may simply knock the tree over.

Aello sighed, as she closed her eyes, and rested her hands on her knees, palm facing up towards the night sky. The sun had fallen behind the trees about an hour before, casting the sky in a wide array of color- deep pinks and purple, yellows and orange, but now, it was simply a dark blue, the moon hiding behind the clouds.

Aello had spent a large portion of the day gathering plants and any other fruits she could from the bushes and the trees, things to eat, things that simply smelled nice; she didn't know if they had any real use, but they smelled good, so that had to count for something, right? Aello sighed heavily as she began to breath in and out, in through the nose, out through the mouth. The day's travel had been rather tiring. Aello needed to meditate simply to relax and clear her mind.

Aello sat up as straight as she could, and began her meditation by concentrating on the top of her head. It felt cold, and several thoughts were facing through her mind- how cold she felt, how she should probably start a fire soon, how nice that white flower she had found earlier smelled... Aello breathed out, releasing her breath with an audible sigh. She willed the thoughts to leave her as she breathed out, and slowly allowed her head to relax. Aello's eyes were fluttering even though they were closed- scrunching tightly shut, and then loosely over and over again. They appeared tense and as Aello continued to simply breath, she willed them to relax, and finally, they did, growing heavy and finally, no longer twitching.

Aello then proceeded to relax the rest of her body, a body that appeared to be experiencing nothing other than tension. First she moved onto her cheeks, and then her mouth. Then, she allowed her neck and shoulders to relax. The tension in her arms and her hands, her fingertips disappeared. Then her chest. Slowly, Aello continued to breath in through the nose, out through the mouth, each exhalation bringing on another wave of relaxation. She ended with bringing her legs and her feet into a relaxed state. She felt like she was floating, which, she hoped, was a good thing.

Aello began to focus on her breath, concentrating on how many times she let it in, and then out. Allowing herself to hold her breath for at least five seconds at a time before letting it out, allowing the air to fill her lungs before releasing it into the cold night sky again. Aello performed eleven breath cycles, and then began to slowly chant as she breathed. "Relax, relax, relax," she whispered into the wind, almost breathlessly. She did this for fifteen minutes before she slowly opened her eyes, and simply sat in silence for a minute, allowing her brain to wander, and the new feeling of lightness she had created through her meditation to overcome her.

And that is when she began to wonder if the plants and things she had gathered had another use, a use other than food or aromatherapy. Perhaps, she thought, that she could perform a little experiment. Perhaps she could make soulmist with ingredients other than the usual soft cheese, flour, egg, and blood. Thus, Aello reached for her bag and pulled out two empty glass jars, the jars she always used when she was making soulmist.

Looking into the Mist (Solo)

Then Aello pulled the collection of various plants she had gathered during the day, and a leftover crunchy bread crust from her bag and set them all on her lap. She placed the bag by her feet, and ran her finger over the tiny stems of the plants she had gathered, their various-colored leaves- browns, deep reds, and forest greens. They were all very beautiful in their own ways, and together, they created a scent that reminded her of someone's first and failed attempt at cooking a spicy dish. All together, they couldn't create something coherent, but as individual parts, they were wonderful, she thought, as she tried to pick which three items she should use for her latest attempt at making soulmist, and her only attempt at making it without the "typical soulmist ingredients."

Finally deciding that she would mix the bread crust with a plant that smelled like mint and a thin slice of a green apple she had found. Feeling too lazy to reach for her bag to get her eating knife and cut off a clean slice of apple, however, Aello merely lifted the shiny green apple to her lips, and took a bit, before plucking two mint leaves off the stem of her plant, shoving a piece of bread crust she had ripped off from the rest into her mouth, and beginning to chew. The taste that danced across her tongue was far better than she was used to when it came to making soulmist, but it still wasn't great. But Aello wasn't much for complaining, and would take the slight improvement any day.

After she had been chewing for a few minutes, and the mixture in her mouth had become soft, like oatmeal, Aello pulled the blade out of its hiding place and pricked the middle finger of her left hand with it. She opened her mouth, sticking her tongue out, and lifted her finger above it. She let the blood drip into her mouth. Five drops before she lowered her finger and wiped it off on the grassy patch that surrounded her. She retracted her tongue, and closed her mouth; began to chew. The mixture was nastier than before, Aello blamed it on the blood. Best to get the taste out of her mind with a meditation, she thought, as she crossed her legs again, and assumed the lotus position. She rested her hands on her knees, palms face-up towards the sky.

Aello closed her eyes, and began to breath in through her nose, out through the mouth. She continued to take deep, cleansing breaths and then began to imagine a red ball, about the size of an average apple, in her mind's eye. The ball was blood red, and appeared to be an orb of bright light floating by her tailbone. Aello imagined the ball spinning around evenly; perfectly balanced. She imagined it providing her body with both health, and a renewed sense of strength. She allowed it to heal and provide a balance for her entire body. "I am balanced, I am safe," Aello whispered as she continued to chew on the soulmist mixture in her mouth, and breath deeply and evenly. Aello continued doing this for twenty full minutes before she slowly opened her eyes. When she did, she felt a fresh wave of calm wash over her. It felt nice.

Aello flexed her fingers, and unfolded her legs. She stretched them out before her, willing them to feel some sort of relief from the tension she had built up in them by having them folded under her body for so long. Aello continued chewing half-heartedly as she placed her makeshift soulmist ingredients back into her bag, before leaning back up against the white birch tree. She chewed for a few more minutes before her mouth began to grow cool. Her teeth felt like tiny blocks of ice, and her saliva felt as though it were crystalizing within the confines of her mouth. Had she made soulmist? Aello wondered as she lifted one of the two glass jars that rested on the ground to her side. With her free hand, she removed the lid, and brought the jar to her mouth. She slowly breathed into the jar, releasing a cold, off-white gel. Soulmist. Aello smiled, she had found a new way to supply herself and the ghosts that seemed to plague her with soulmist. When she had finished breathing into the jar, she closed the lid, she had filled it up about halfway. She put everything back into her bag, and got up, she really needed to make a fire, or she would freeze during the night.
