The Martial Society Headquarters

The Martial Society Headquarters
ImageThe Martial Society Headquarters building is one of few grand buildings on East Street. Clearly of modern architecture, but in a bastardized style of the Royal Period Architecture that makes up most of the Ancient and University Quarters. With an elegant double granite staircase leading up to intricately carved windows and doors,, it is clear that whoever owns this building has money. And in Zeltiva, those with money, have power.

Well within territory where the Wave Guard does not patrol, the building stands as the source of law on the Notorious avenue. Nominally recognized as the police authority within the street, the Martial Society has a heavier presence in this section of the city than the Wave Guard. Still, Zeltiva is not a lawless place, and the Martial Society has standards of civility for its domain, knowing that if they do not contain the nefarious activities, the Wave Guard will happily step in. Citizens both honest (and some dishonest) can approach the Martial Society here whether that is to petition the Society for a contract, be hired on as a mercenary in the Society’s employ, or receive training from its various members. There are a number of services that can be provided here.

The Headquarters Office is well maintained given the Society’s status in Zeltiva. It is not officially guarded, but given the makeup of the Society within, no one would dare question the safety of the compound. There are no courtyards within the headquarters complex but there are large rooms sectioned off to serve various functions. The first floor boasts a simple but elegant lobby where one who is not a member of the Society may wait to meet with a Captain for a commission or recruitment. Non-members may also pay for lessons in the training rooms beyond, if their standing with the Society is good.

Those who are a part of the society are welcome to breeze past this lobby into the training rooms that make up the first floor. There is a long hallway that holds four doors, leading to four training rooms. The first door on the left is for unarmed combat styles, and is often the least crowded of the four training rooms. The first door on the right belongs to the archery range. It is built for beginners who still need to work on their precision and accuracy, with padded walls and various targets set up. The second door on the left is the beginner melee weapons training. There is a variety of common wooden practice weapons here that can be used for lessons. The second room on the right is for the more advance weapon’s practices. One is allowed to bring their own weapon and armor, and all practice here holds some level of danger, but yields better results in skill. Non-members are not allowed to access this room.

Visitors are seldom allowed to wander beyond the first floor of the headquarters building. The second floor of the building is largely administrative in nature with offices allocated to Society officials. Here is where Mercenaries will find their captains of the Marshal, should they need him or her. No one lives at the Headquarters, although a small room with a few bunks is provided for those mercenaries who need a quick nap before their next mission.

Egelmes Moor
ImageRace: Human
Date of Birth: Summer, 463AV
Place of Birth: Zeltiva
Title: Marshal of the Martial Society
Skills: Tactics: Fighting (65), Unarmed Combat (60), Leadership (55), Weapon: Short Sword (50), Weapon: Crossbow (45), Teaching (40), Bodybuilding (30), Negotiation (20)
Language: Common (Fluent)
Concept: Egelmes is not a very well-known name in Zeltiva, or even on the East Street, despite the Martial Society’s prominence. An ex-Wave Guard Captain, Egelmes was medically retired from the Wave Guard for the loss of his arm. Normal people would have taken the early retirement with grace, although Egelmes found this to be unfair. He tried to convince the Wave Guard that he was still in shape to serve, but they would not allow him to return. Unable to quietly retire, the man took to the Martial Society, training with them to best better his new circumstances, and adapt to fighting with only one arm. It did not take long for him to be hired on as a mercenary, and show the Martial Society that he was not only one of the most tactical one-armed fighters, but that he was probably the most tactical fighter around. Just as he had in the Wave Guard, Egelmes rose through the ranks and quickly became the Tondun of his time. When it was time for the old Marshal to retire, no one was surprised to find Egelmes filling the spot.

He is a gruff man, a bit surly and temperamental, but he is an excellent strategist, and the Martial Society flourished under his direction. Although he was never able to put down his sword, he has done remarkably well as Marshal, knowing when and who to delegate duties to in order to keep the Society functioning best. Still, he remains as far from the public eye as he can, sending messengers and captains when it is necessary for him to speak. He avoids the Wave Guard as best he can, and many think it is his history with the Wave Guard that contributes to the Martial Society having the best relations with the Wave Guard that it has had in decades.

Tondun Johnson
ImageRace: Human
Date of Birth: Spring, 480AV
Place of Birth: Zeltiva
Title: Captain in the Martial Society
Skills: Weapon: Pike (75), Weapon: Short Sword (70), Weapon: Throwing Daggers (65), Tactics: Fighting (60), Unarmed Combat (50), Weapon: Quarterstaff (45), Leadership (40), Bodybuilding (30), Teaching (20)
Language: Common (Fluent)
Concept: Tondun is a model mercenary in the employ of the Martial Society, and has since been employed as a captain. He has been with them ever since he was a young man of little more than sixteen. He is known to be a gifted leader, an honorable man and a shrewd judge of character. He has the respect of both the honest and dishonest figures in East Street as well as prominent figures in the city. Tondun is perhaps the most skilled mercenary in the whole of the Society, including the Marshal himself. His long standing with the Society has afforded him much practice with different weapons, and although his skill is undeniable, he does not gloat it. For the most part, Tondun is a quiet man, watching more than he is talking. He is known for being wise, but still quick to action, and an excellent leader and mentor to new recruits. His word is second only to the Marshal of the Society.

It is a little known fact that he is the only son and heir to Tranaris Johnson, the Seneschal of Zeltiva. His father and he do not exactly see eye to eye. The relationship between the two of them could be described as cordial at best. In the off chance that he takes on a student, it is because he sees potential in the individual.

Delia Wharg
ImageRace: Human
Date of Birth: Winter, 486AV
Place of Birth: Zeltiva
Title: Captain in the Martial Society
Skills: Projection (65), Unarmed Combat (60), Reimancy (50), Quarterstaff (45), Glyphing (40), Planning (35), Tactics: Fighting (30), Escape Artist (25)
Language: Common (Fluent), Nader-Canoch (Basic)
Concept: Delia is a self-made mage who has spent the whole of her life in committing to the arcane arts. She began in the University, studying arcanology and learning the more mundane magics. After a period she grew close with a reimancy professor, who she was able to prove her worthiness to so that she could be inducted into the line. Since progressing in her skill and impressing her old mentor, she branched off from the University, becoming one of the few mages in Zeltiva who focuses her djed on the martial rather than the intellectual. Often she butts heads with the mages in the College of Djed throughout the past believing them narrow minded “tome wizards”. She is a passionate woman who believes in putting her skills to good use. Delia does not take students, still trusting her roots in the University, and the safety of the institution. She will flat out refuse to teach anyone who does not already possess a rudimentary knowledge of magic, although may occasionally help an experienced mage tune their skills on the field. Even then she will only take a mage under her wing if they have been a member in good standing with the Martial Society for several seasons. She watches, she studies and if she believes an individual reckless, she will not give them the time of day.

Delia’s motivations for joining the Martial Society are based in the sound and reasonable belief that the Society can afford her the opportunity to explore the often under-appreciated aspects of magic. This belief has paid off on a number of occasions. She repays the Society by sometimes crafting items of note to be used by high ranking society members exclusively. Her status in Zeltiva is a renowned one. While she does not get along with the majority of mages who hail from the University, she is an appreciator of knowledge and respectful of the.
