[Sanctuary] Foaling 101 - The Blessings of New Life

Riki smiled when Kavala commented on his work. The smile faded a bit as he looked over to Mizuriel at his side. He did not want the man to think he was showing him up. Shyly he smiled at Mizuriel before he turned to look at Kavala. Just because he had made one good diagnosis it did not mean he would not mess up again. At his side he saw Lakara. He smiled lightly at her and mouthed a hello. He must have not seen her earlier. He tended to get so deep into his work that he forgot the rest of the word existed. He was happy that she showed up. He enjoyed her company. The girl was quite quiet, much like him. It did not make for very interesting conversations between the two but at least they had their soft demeanors in common. "I don't mind the second watch." He really did not care which one he got. He knew his time to watch would have come eventually. Silently he ran over the steps that Kavala had said in his mind. He did not want to mess up when she was not watching over his shoulder.

"Sounds good to me. I'll take the third and swing by periodically to see how they are doing in between. If anything happens and they show any signs of foaling come get me. You'll need some guidence through the first few births." Kavala said softly, then gave each mare a pat. She made sure they had plenty of cut hay and water, then left each person to their own work until later.

Jinibi and Glow were both restless that night. Near midnight, Glow started sweating and Jinibi laid down for a nap. Glow began to pace and bite at her sides while Jinibi remained calm and showed no outward signs of labor until Glow stretched out in her stall and began to labor while Jinibi got up to watch over the edge of her own loose box. Before long, Jinibi began to sweat as well and an hour after midnight, both mares were well along in their labor. Glow kept laboring, showing no results while Jinibi refused to lay down even as a tiny bit of sack protruded from beneath her tail. Finally the big mare laid down as well and while Jinibi's labor progressed along, Glow's went no where fast. Whomever was on watch would need to run for help fast.

Too bad this thread died—it would have been good fun! I especially enjoy Kavala's calm passion and knowledge.
