He needed to disappear. The man had run as soon as he realized that Ray was not one to be messed with. It was obvious the man was used to getting his way… the smug smile that remained on his face during the time that Rayque had been around him led her to believe that he thought women loved him. Of course, the man was attractive… Ray could give him that, but nothing else. He was tall, dark haired and dark eyed. Just the type of man that Ray would go after, if he hadn’t been drunk.
Ray had been minding her own business, trying to find a place to sit down and take a break when the drunken man had approached her. Many men approached her in the past, only to be scared off by her aura. Ray was not one to be messed with. His comments were rude and degrading, but Ray let it go on for a bit simply because she was tired. It seemed as though her lack of reproach had made the man think that she liked him because soon his large muscular body was trapping her against the wall, leaving her no room to move.
As any other kelvic, Ray did not like being trapped, but days without food had made her tired and less resistant. As she tried to push the man away, he only pressed closer to her. His breath smelled like alcohol as his breath tickled her face when he whispered, “Hello wild one… how about you come with me…” Uh oh. Ray was in trouble. Of course there was no trouble that she could not get out of, but this man was persistent. It would take more than a simple warning to keep him away from her from now on.
He had grabbed her arm roughly and was dragging her through the halls when she quickly pulled out of his grasp. His hands had come at her again but she had moved, making him stumble. Only when her whisper reached his ears did he stop coming toward her. “You will regret this day for the rest of your pathetic life…” her venomous voice had made the man consider who he was messing with. But when he turned to fully face her, she was gone.
Ray disgustedly brushed off her dress thinking about the man’s dirty hands. He would regret it. It was a few days after the incident and Ray had been following the man, waiting for the perfect time to strike. He had mentioned travel and he was planning on leaving the next day. Ray would have a surprise when he did leave. She was not one to forgive easily.
The man had finally left the safety of the city walls and now he was hers. Ray followed him through trees and brush before he finally stopped for the night. He was to meet up with a few other men and then continue traveling, or so Ray had heard. She would have to strike soon if she wanted to catch him alone. He had dropped the few bags he was carrying and was washing his hands in a small stream nearby. It was dark, and Ray was wearing all black. This prevented the man from seeing her as she approached silently.
He hands had taken the green sash from around her waist and she was holding it with both hands close to her stomach. Rayque was used to having a variety of weapons on her, and when she figured out that she had none with her, she had improvised. She was now standing about a foot behind the man, and before he could realize what was going on, her sash had wrapped around his neck twice. Her grip on the green fabric was tight as she whispered one last thing, “I told you that you’d regret it…” The man’s eye had rolled back in his head as the sash came to wrap even tighter around his thick neck. He finally went unconscious, his body becoming limp. Ray remained there behind him. She would not let go until the man’s chest stopped moving for she of all people knew that if his chest was moving, he was still alive. After checking around to make sure no one else was there, her eyes trained on his chest. No one messes with Rayque and gets away with it. |

Devlin strolled through the gates of Sylrias making his way outside of the city for the first time since he had arrived. So far the city had been a let down to him, he had so far found no one who could teach him anything to further his magical pursuits. Also he had heard of the Sylrian Knights but he had not anticipated that there presence would be so numerous. They made making a dishonest living far more difficult for him. Since his arrival in the city he had been far more cautious than he wanted to be. It was not his style to go about in this way but he was worried of the consequences. So today he left the safety of the walls to clear his mind. As he passed the guards at the gate he saluted them rather sarcastically, "Good day gentlemen! Keep up the good work!"
His cheery smile faded as he passed them and a rather grim demeanor took over. So far he hated this place; the people were mostly lazy and held very little worth. Maybe a handful of people he felt were worthy of living such lives but overall most of the city he felt did not deserve the lives they lived and he hated them for that. Then there were the self righteous Knights, walking around looking down on others. Sure they were strong but Dev viewed them as nothing more than an inconvenience to him. Soon he was well away from the city walls and he felt comfortable enough to stop. He sat down on ground with his legs crossed and began to breathe very deeply. The stress of the city was getting to him and he needed to clear his mind. Soon his mind emptied of off his thoughts and he began to feel calm. He breathed in through his nose and out through his mouth. Times like these were some of the only times the he felt like he was truly happy. He seemed weightless now, almost as if he were floating.
Perhaps an hour had have passed, he wasn't sure but something had distracted his attention. He tried to ignore but his focus was broken now and he cursed the disturbance under his breath. Of all the places and times, something has to interrupt here and now. Not happy that his meditation time had been cut short, he slowly rose to his feet as he looked around to see what was going on. The first thought was an animal but it sounded too large for that. He pulled the hood of his purple cloak over his head as he began approaching the location where the disturbance was coming from. His feet stepped very lightly as he walked attempting to make no sound as he moved, carefully avoiding any dead leaves or twigs on the ground that may give him away.
Suddenly he caught glimpse of a young woman standing over what looked like a grown man. The man seemed to be in pain and he thought that the girl was trying to help him. But soon he realized just exactly what he was seeing; it appeared to him that the dark haired girl was choking the life from the man. A great smile crept across his face, How lucky am I? This was something he was very happy he had stumbled upon, he hadn't seen anything quite so entertaining in quite sometime. He stepped in closer until he was quite close to the action so that he could gain a better view. He watched closely enjoying it until he saw the man lay motionless on the ground. Common sense told him to walk away but he was not one to listen to such things.
"Very nicely handled my lady!" He spoke out to her with his back pressed firmly against the trunk of a tree. The hood hid most of his face except for his devilish smile that was in plain sight, his teeth seemed to gleam at her. His arms were folded and he stood on one foot with the other behind him pressed against the tree. "A little too....hands on for me, but to each their own. Right? I do wonder though....What could this man have done to you to warrant such action. Surely he deserved no less I'm sure." |

A sound came from behind Ray and she nearly dropped her hold on her sash which was wrapped around the unfortunate man’s neck. As she turned, she could make out a figure by a tree nearby. The voice was low, and Ray assumed that the figure was a man, but she could not see his face. It was possible that this was one of the unconscious man’s friends, but if he was then he would not be applauding her.
She unwrapped the sash from around the man’s neck and gracefully put it back around her waist. It did not seem to be very dirty, and Ray was glad for it would make her mad if her sash had gotten dirty. The man seemed relaxed, not at all bothered by what he had seen her do. It was not often that this happened for most people avoided her if they saw her do something that was… not publicly acceptable. A refreshing change, but he was a little too bold.
Her slow, paced steps made their way closer to the strange man’s standing form. “You are not important enough to make me reveal any information…” her voice was more of a hiss. If anyone felt bold enough to stay around her after they had seen her commit some sort of crime, then they were usually scared away with a hissed threat. It was an easy way to make sure no one got too close or gathered too much information about her. But this man would not leave. It was bothering Ray and she needed to scare him away before he learned anything more about her or her situation.
She stepped even closer to the dark man, coming to stand very close to his side. “If you tell anyone about this…” her whisper was soft, but still threatening. Her head had turned to the side, her face next to his as her breath was felt on the side of his face, “you will die.” |

Devlin did not move as she spoke to him, in fact if she could see under his hood she would have seen his eyes burning with rage. He was infuriated that this girl so recklessly threaten him. After all she knew nothing about him or what he was capable of. While he was no real threat with a weapon, his eyes were his real weapon. As a talented hypnotist he relied on his influence over others to get what he wanted from them. So there he stood with her stepping closer and closer threatening to en his life. She was considerably shorter than he, which was saying something for he was not tall by most standards. Does she really believe she intimidates me? Suddenly he smiled again as his shoulders began to shake, a chuckle escaped him as he leaned there still against the tree.
Then just as quickly as he began to laugh he stopped and was still again, for several moments he stood there silent with his eyes still hidden. "First of all girl, it is very unwise to threaten someone's life especially when you know nothing about them." With that he stood up straight and took a step closer to her. She dared to try and threaten him, he would show her what it really meant to intimidate. His tone was very sharp and he spoke very directly. Although she could not see his eyes were fixed on her. "And now you reveal that you have a secret worth knowing, hmm. Perhaps this is why the dead man lies dead, yes?" He again took another step closer to her, they now were almost touching. "And remember that you, not I was foolish enough to commit murder with a witness only a few feet away. You obviously are not the intellectual type. But here you stand with the audacity to threaten my life? Hmph. You act as I have never witnessed murder before or been threatened for that matter. And believe me, girl. I have received death threats from people far more intimidating than yourself."
He turned away from her and walked towards the body that lay sprawled out on the ground. He reached down and pressed his fingers on the mans neck to check for a pulse; however he found no such thing. Then he began emptying the mans pockets in search of anything valuable and to his disappointment he found nothing. Then he moved to the bags continuing his search and again found nothing of value. He did however pull out an apple that he found in the man's food stash. He tossed it up in the air several times before taking a bite from it. He stood with his back turned to her chewing on the apple, after taking several bites he dropped it onto the ground and kicked it into some nearby bushes.
His focused shifted back to the dark haired girl and he turned quickly on his heels. "Now..." His tone had changed again and was now very light and airy. He took several quick steps towards her so that he again was nearly on top of her. "I was rather enjoying my day until you came along. But I'll forgive you, just this once." He didn't quite yet have a hold on this girl. Honestly this whole event had given him a new spring in his step. It was almost like a play to him and he almost couldn't wait to see how things played out. This was exactly what he had needed to clear his mind. |

His words were spoken with contempt, as if he knew that he was better than her and that she did not frighten him. It was true that she was lacking in height, but who was he to judge her based on her height? Compared to the average man, he was quite short as well. His attitude was annoying her, for he had no idea what she had been through in her first few years of life. It also seemed as though he didn’t realize she was a different race. Most people could tell by simply looking at her that she was different from most humans, and most became wary of her for that reason.
The man assumed that she was unable to kill him, and that the threat was just a joke. The few times that people had ignored Ray’s threats ended badly for all of them. Surely he didn’t realize what she could do. Most beings that she met were unable to kill her even if they tried for she used many techniques to remain superior to all she encountered. Why was this man any different? What made him think that he was better than her and that even if she wanted, she could not kill him. His laughter had made her anger even greater as her eyes flashed that wildness.
But Ray had an idea. She would not kill him… not quite yet, for it seemed he was enjoying himself. In desperate need of some entertainment as well, Ray needed to get this man to let his guard down… to let her in. If her threats would not make his barriers break, then maybe other things would. From what Ray could see, the man was fairly attractive. If he wanted women, then he probably got them for he seemed able to use whatever tools necessary to get what he wanted.
“You are right…” Ray’s voice had taken on a more dark and seductive tone rather then the hiss she had spoken earlier. She took slow, small steps so she now was circling the confident man. Her hands reached his arm, the one closest to her as she lightly trailed her fingers up the cloak sleeve. Her footsteps continued around so she was now standing behind the man. “Who am I to question such a…” her fingers had reached his shoulder, and with a slight tug his hood dropped back revealing his pale hair, “such a talented man.” She had reached up so her face was close to the back of his neck, her warm breath brushing over his skin.
Ray had never seen the man before in her life, but if she were to compliment him to get him to trust her, then some lies were needed. She had no idea what this man was doing here but there was a good likelihood that he had displayed some kind of talent while here, and now she was implying that he was good at it. Her bluff was almost undetectable unless for some reason the man had done nothing of interest while in the city, for then he would not trust anything she said. |

Devlin smiled as she slid his hood from his head, this girl was very bold and he somewhat respected her for that. His face was very smug and he gave of a very arrogant vibe now. It was true that he often viewed himself as better than others and because of was sometimes blinded by his own self worth. He closed his eyes as he ran on of his hands through his hair causing his bangs to stick up ever so slightly. There was no doubt that this girl was attractive, he had noticed that the moment he saw her. But did she really think that she could bat her eye lashes, throw him an empty compliment and expect him to melt in her hands? She had probably been successful with lesser men with this trick but Dev was not fooled. Why would she so suddenly change her attitude now? Just a moment ago she was giving him death threats and now she was stroking his ego, he was not impressed.
Honestly he was slightly annoyed that she thought he would be swayed so easily but he figured that because of her looks that she was used to this little stunt working on most people. He contemplated telling her off, exposing her by showing that he could see right through her little facade. Slowly he turned his gaze to meet hers, his eyes were very intense as he stared right into her eyes. There was something odd about her eyes now that he looked closely, he couldn't quite place it though. Ahhh, Kelvic maybe? He had never met a Kelvic so he wasn't even sure if girl was or was not, perhaps he would find out later but now was not the time for such concerns. Just as he was ready to speak up and denounce this girl for the fake that she was, she began to speak. This girl had no idea what his talents were and he knew that for a fact. He had never seen her before and since his arrival in Sylrias he had done nothing even remotely noticeable by anyone. Appalled now even further he almost burst out with a sharp laugh. This girl was definitely bold to try and play that card. A delicate touch and an ego boost and she thought that he would be wrapped around her finger. Fine. I'll play along.
Now he looked deep into her eyes and focused on a thought, he brought his hand up and brushed his hand through her dark hair. If he could implant a genuine attraction to him in her mind perhaps he could use this to his advantage. His eyes almost seemed to light up now, then he sent over a wave of emotion into her mind. Perhaps she would notice or perhaps not, but he had planted the idea that she did in fact find him very attractive.
"You're such a sweet girl to speak so highly of me. I had no idea I had such an admirer." His hand continued to slightly graze her hair as he spoke. Now he moved his hand down and lifted her chin so that he made sure their eyes met. "Now tell me sweetness. What about my work do you admire most?" Surely now he would catch her off guard, he would see how quickly this girl was on her feet. |

The man’s eyes were unusual, and as he turned around, Ray noticed them even more. He was hiding something… he had some power that no one knew of. He ran a hand through her hair, which Ray tolerated due to the fact that it seemed like he was falling for simply the beginning of her in depth plan to get him to let his guard down. Of course, even though it seemed like he was letting his guard down, Ray knew that it was possible, if not probable that he was just faking the trust. He stared into her eyes intently, and as Ray calmly gazed back, she began to wonder what it was that this man did. It seemed like he was trying to do something to her… something that Ray did not know but it wasn’t working. She felt no different then before.
His question did not surprise her much, for with others which she had played her games on, had asked questions as well. It was her lack of response, at least at first that surprised her. Normally, Ray would have some idea what she was going to say in response to a variety of questions because quick answers generally made the person trust her more. She had to come up with some kind of answer fast. An idea struck her as the man continued to stare into her eyes. He was trying to do something… and she could play off of that. He was also not the cleanest of people in regards to morals, so Ray played with a few ideas in her mind before finally speaking.
“You use people…” Ray was trying this idea, unsure of whether it was actually true about the man standing in front of her, “you manipulate them, and have no concern for others…” her fingers came up to play with the front of the man’s cloak, stepping even closer to him. “It’s so… so refreshing. Definitely different then most of the population of Syliras.” There was less then a fifty percent chance that this was true about the man, but Ray had nothing else for she had never seen him before, and what she had just mentioned is exactly what she herself does and has done in the past. |

Devlin's eyes never left her gaze for a moment, he just had to keep searching for the right response. So far she seemed unaffected by his attempts. This what what he hated most about hypnotism, it often took time for any real kind of effect could be seen. Whether or not she had felt his subliminal messages he did not know. If she is really a Kelvic, can this even work? Having never met a Kelvic he just couldn't be sure if she was or not which put him at a disadvantage. For now he would stop before she began to suspect him of something, his mind relaxed and he returned to his normal thoughts.
Finally she had spoken up, but she had hesitated. Her answer was not immediate which meant that she had to think, and if she had to think then she had most likely just fabricated a lie. However her answer was nearly spot on to exactly what he did, he was almost impressed.Good guess, he thought to himself. The smile had faded from his face without his knowing. He was upset that she had guessed so closely to what he truly is. Was it a guess?, he was questioning himself now.Of course it was! You saw the hesitation before she answered you! She lied and got lucky, a voice in his head reassured him.
If this girl was truly a Kelvic then that must mean that she is actually an animal in a human form. Then she must also have the mind of an animal, right? Then an idea came to him, Aren't all animals wary of new comers? But if they feel safe and feel like someone is trustworthy do they not let their guard down and open up? Hmm...perhaps I should try a new approach to this. It was a tedious business attempting to find the right emotion to play on and sometimes not worth the trouble. His first attempt seemed ineffective but perhaps it at least gave her something to think about. Again he focused his mind as he looked deep into her eyes, he would try once more. This time he wanted a stronger emotion, if he could convince her that her inner voice was telling her something then maybe he could win her over. He would need to go a little deeper this time.
"Go on, trust this man. Look at his eyes! They are so passionate and trust worthy. Don't you want a friend? Someone to look after you? Someone who you can...trust? He said this to himself in his head several times as he tried to implant that exact thought into her mind. He backed off now, he didn't want to give too much too quickly, if she caught on to him that would make it immensely more difficult almost to the point of being impossible. His white teeth gleamed through his smile now, he was pleased with himself at least for the moment. "Very clever my dear. And I certainly can't argue with your taste." He spoke very calmly and his voice sounded very cool and relaxed. "But what I can't help but wonder how a pretty little thing such as yourself, would come all the way out here to kill a man." |

From the man’s expression, Ray could see that she guessed correctly, or at least partially correct. Of course the time she had spent considering what she would say probably led the man to not trust her as much as if she would have answered right away, but at least it was a start. He was more like her than she thought. It was uncommon to find anyone like her in Syliras and even though she and the man had gotten off to a rough start, Ray could see them becoming acquaintances if not more.
Trust… it was a precious thing. Many people had abused Ray’s trust, and for that reason, she was even more wary of strangers than other Kelvics were. Normally, Ray would never trust a man like this… but he seemed different. She saw the way that he was staring at her intently, and at first it had just seemed strange, but now it was becoming more normal. Being only a few years old, Ray had not encountered many people who could trick her into trusting them, but she was sure that someone out there could, and what if it was this one of those people. A barrier appeared in her mind, a thicker one that Ray reserved for occasions where she knew her boundaries were lower.
He had mentioned that he was wondering why she had traveled out here to kill the man, but her instincts told her not to reveal this information. He had swiftly changed the subject, avoiding what she had brought up. Ray herself had avoided many conversations by doing the same thing, but she would not drop the subject. Her pale hand came up to trace the large tattoo on the man’s face, her deceptively sweet smile giving him the impression that she was infatuated with him. Maybe he could tell that she wasn’t, but it was fun for Ray to play this part in their little game.
Of course Ray was attracted to him, but she couldn’t let that get in the way of her lies. If she let down her guard, then she would be helpless to his wishes. It could not happen… Ray wouldn’t let it. “You don’t need to worry yourself with such… unimportant information.” Her voice was low and charming as the small smile continued to play across her face. |

"Fair enough." Dev relaxed a bit now. So far he could not tell is she was affected by his advances but he had expect this. Often times such minute mind tricks took time to develop. He wondered what she was thinking in her mind now, Hmph, that would make things so much easier. If only I could read minds...perhaps with practice? Is it even possible I wonder? Doubtful. His mind wandered slightly but he caught himself before he lost focus on the task at hand.
Sometimes he amazed even himself, what the hell was he even bothering this girl. In the grand scheme of it all she was nobody important to him, simply a stranger. And why try to play with her mind, just let her be and go about her life. Why not just have walked away and ignored the whole incident? It was true that the girl was attractive but other than that he had no reason to be here. Because I can?
The girl certainly knew how to seduce a man and for that he had to give credit to her. The advances were becoming harder and harder to resist even for him. The hair and his neck stood up as she traced the ink on his face. He even caught himself closing his eyes and he enjoyed her slight touch. Soon he realized what he was allowing himself to do and it disgusted him. However he chose to play into the girls hands for now. "We are strangers after all. But that can be remedied. My name is Devlin, but you can call me...Dev. If you wish." He talked very smoothly and his eyes narrowed on her and he turned his gaze on her body for a moment as he looked her up and down. Quickly he brought his eyes back to hers as he ran his fingers through the tips of her hair. "And who might you be? If I may be so bold as to ask..." |
