[Wind Reach] The Market Place

Description:

The Market was a whirlwind of sight, sound, and smell. The night before Market Day was filled with anticipation and preparation. The people of Mount Skyinarta banded together, working as one to carefully reconstruct this atmosphere on a weekly basis. Since Wind Reach is nowhere near a bustling city full of shops to satisfy any need, these resourceful people have made do with what they have. The basic necessities for everyday living and surviving are provided for each individual, but there was hardly anywhere to get the things one might not need, but want. This frequent festivaleqsue atmosphere is the result. Rain or shine, the people can look forward to selling or buying their necessities every ten days, without fail. After a grueling eight day work week, the progress in Wind Reach shifts as days nine and ten are spent in eager anticipation and preparation of the Market. Those with shops spend their time gathering their wares. The kitchens are filled to brimming with individuals baking goodies for their stalls, while Avora have to struggle for their rightful spots in the craft galleries as they begin to bustle with those who wish to try their hand at making knickknacks to sell. From sun up to sun down, multitudes of booths are erected and filled with almost everything an Inartian would need, as well as extravagances that no one really needed but everyone wanted, and entertainment.

During the Market days, the Courtyard of the Sky was completely transformed. Dozens of colored canvas’s fluttered in the breeze, adorning the different stalls and tents as they served to shelter from the sun and wind. The booths were arranged around the edge of the Courtyard, forming a loose ring. These booths were of more common variety with easy access. If one was not in the mood for the Market or big crowds, this made it easy to skip by and pick up the essentials; foods, clothing, fabrics, and other useful, typical materials.

Another ring of booths was arranged within the first, and these were shops of a more special verity. Avora and Chiet whose daytime jobs consisted of other talents, used these booths to either sell their creations (for example, an apprentice glassblower selling the excess fruits of his labor) or those who began to tinker in a new skill and decided to try and make a profit. Mind you, only good workmanship was accepted into the Market. No shoddy paraphernalia was sold. These booths held a higher going price than the outer ring.

The final, central ring was the most expensive of all. Here, the masters of their crafts erected their stands for sale of their services. Custom made leathers, furniture, and stone masonry. Anything an Inartan could desire was theirs- for a price. There were also pre-made items available in the inner ring, but they were of the highest quality. Many of the wares sold in the inner ring catered to the Endal’s and their Eagle companions, their aeries and their fanciful tastes. There were very few in the lower castes that could afford these prices.

However, things changed slightly during the fall and winter months. When Wind Reach was plagued by harsh rains and persistent snows the Market was held within the Stained Glass Gallery. The feeling of good natured fun that naturally hung in the air on this day was not dampened one bit by the inclement weather. In fact, the population of fierce red heads seemed to take it as a challenge. Even when the snow reached above even the tallest man’s head, the Inarta all gathered within the gallery. There were a few less booths within, but to be fair to all, those that missed out one week would be featured in the next. It was a rotating system that worked to the benefit of the entire population.

Overseeing the whole Market was Derdain. Standing like the imposing bouncer he was, arms crossed at the entrance to the circles of stalls, no one dared to try and sneak past. It was tradition to tell Derdain ones business in the market. The conversation was short and concise, ending with a casual toss of his toward the stalls if one is admitted, a stern glower meant to send men running if one is denied. There was no misbehavior tolerated around the booths and their delicate wares, and Derdain made sure of this. Children were left at home or kept closely at heel. Any problems and all a shop owner had to do was raise a blood red flag above their stall and Derdain or his lackeys would come running to assistance.

Can't Fly? I'll Get You High! :

A simple booth that consists of a piece of paper, a quill, an ink bottle (all “borrowed” from that guy selling literary supplies in the next stall over), and a fine piece of Endal flesh named Sairque. Don’t get too excited, she isn’t going to be taking you up for joy rides on her Eagle, Catabasis. She’s going to be signing you up for multi-day climbing excursions. The rare kind, the kind on walls and faces and cracks that only Endal have been to because they’re so far away. And with a safety net. Plummeting to the earth? Hello Catabasis!

Avant-Card :
Description:

An off shoot of The Written Word with a focus on fancy cards. Birthday Cards, Wedding Cards, Congratulations Cards, even the oh so subtle I-Passive-Aggressively-Hate-You Cards (Vala has a knack for those.)

On the stall counter lies an open portfolio full of premade card examples in almost every imaginable calligraphic font, with cards loaded with gushing and sentimental cra- wishes. Beside the portfolio lies a stack of stationary that patrons can choose from. There are no extra types in the 'back room', what you see is what you get, so stop asking. There are also several ink vials with colors that range from traditional black, sapphire blue, Inarta Red, Royal Purple, Earth Brown, and if it's been a good many days there might even be a small stock of polished silver or burnished gold colored ink (for a little more coin that is).

While there are pre-mades for the busy Endal and Avora, those with a little time and composing skill can write their own messages, which Vala can pretty up with flourishes and such. All commissions are welcome. Everyone in a while eager lovers will come to Avant-Card to commission a special poem written out to be hung on a wall like a painting - Vala is not just limited to cards. She also does the occasional copying job for anyone who has the coin.

When not making or selling cards Vala is usually helping Warden with his commissions… or is it the other way around?

PC:

Vala is sweet and nice and helpful and all sorts of bubbly - to your face. Though she doesn't realize it she has a tendency to drop the price for people whose facial structure she likes, is nice to her, or whose vibe she just happens to like. Sometimes, if she has the supplies she makes cards for free.

As supplies are sometimes scarce in Wind Reach, this is a sometimes-shop. It’s an extreme extravagance to have chocolate and the such, so don’t expect your PC to have handfuls of chocolate goodies daily.

The Written Word :
Description:

Is your day boring, consisting of just working, eating, and sleeping? Then you need some mystery in your life! Romance, Action and Adventure are available for purchase as well! For those who don’t want to do much after a long day’s work, no need to worry. Picking up a book is just as easy as picking up your fork to eat, but much more interesting! One can marry a Pirate, or gallivant through the woods without even leaving the comfort of your home! Or perhaps you read for knowledge. If that’s the case, there is no shortage of informational books, on any subject you could think of! Have a little one who thinks it's fun to rip the pages from your favorite book? Or perhaps your books are suffering from broken bindings? It can be fixed! Bring the ailing book in need of repair and it shall be treated and returned by the next market day. Scrolls and illumination touch-up's also available. This booth is a fixture of marketplace. Masters assign reading for apprentices, who find the required book here. Books for leisure are just as popular. The booth can be found in the outer ring of the market, sheltered from the elements.

NPC:

Warden, a kindly old man with ink stained fingers. A scribe for many years, Warden has known no other life but one surrounded by books. Not that is he is lacking because of it. With copious amounts of knowledge, and having ‘traveled’ to more places than he can count, he can entice even those who’ve come to the market “just to look” to buy one of his books. With a smile and his cute old-man-ways, who could say no?

  • Writing- 40
  • Business- 30
  • Persuasion- 50

Lores:

Felicities Fabrics :
Description:

Being one of the most colorful booths, it is hard to walk by this one without stopping. With reasonable prices and irresistible materials, it is just as hard to walk away without a purchase. Felicity spins, weaves and dyes her own fabrics (with the help of her apprentices). From wool to silk and anything in between, in any color, Felicity has it. Occasionally, imports (different fabrics or colors) from the other cities of Mizahar are also available but one must check back often, for these rarities don’t last long. Thread, string, balls of yarn and wool, needles and other essentials are also sold here. Custom orders accepted. Felicity is able to weave beautiful patterns, and even dye fabric to the colors of ones request. Any rips, tears, or unusual wear on any of these products can be brought back for quick and timely repair!

NPC:

Felicity is a slight woman whose head barely reaches above the counter of her stand. Very knowledgeable and passionate about her work, like most of those who own booths, she is happy to answer any questions and take any special orders one might have (for an additional cost and, of course, time enough to create the ordered material.) Quick to laugh and with wit to spare, it’s hard to pull one over on Felicity, and she leaves most at ease with her charming personality.

The Woodworks :

Furniture, looms, decorations, doors, window frames, flooring, shelving and much more is available here. Wood is a pricey commodity, and most things in Wind Reach are made out of the abundantly available stone. This particular booth is on the higher end of the prices and with quality products to match. With always a few samples to display craftsman ship, most of the business is by custom order. However, if the customer isn’t pick or in a rush for an item, there is already made stock to choose from. For those looking for custom pieces, Billy's work is a plain as his personality. Beautiful in their simplicity, these pieces lack the extravagant detailing sometimes seen on items constructed by master woodworkers.

NPC:

This fine booth is run by Billy. In his late forties, he is already showing signs of age, not only in appearance but in his temperament too. Quiet from a young age, Billy doesn’t take to any nonsense. Tall and whipcord thin, he looks down his nose at all his customers and isn’t afraid to turn away those who he believes can’t pay his high prices. He is partial to Endal, who he gives the minimum amount of respect needed, and is almost openly rude and snappy to everyone else. His business dealing skills consist of short, precise deals with the minimal amount of words necessary and no pleasantries.

NPC:

Chloe is a rather young, attractive, and bubbly individual. It's hard to talk to her without smiling, and most people are brought in by her pretty face, as well as her wares, but small doses are the key. Customers don't stick around long at her booth, as they are soon overwhelmed by her personality. Headaches are common, and sometimes she can induce eye twitches if one is very lucky. Chloe does know her craft very well, and when it gets down to buying and selling, she is all business. However, she tries to sell herself as often as her ceramics. Customers looking for a new bowl might walk away with an effervescent Avora on their arm. Caution is suggested.

NPC:

Leyla is Fabulous. That is the only word to describe her. Dressed always to a T, no one could ever say she put anything less than her best into her work, as well as her appearance. Her philosophy is that if she doesn't look good in her own clothes, who would want them? And it works. Leyla knows how to cater to the younger crowd, and will shamelessly flirt with anyone to get a sale. She is a shrewd business woman who hides it well under a shiny smile and a well placed hand. On top of all that, her craftsman ship is superb. Her only flaw is she has a party disposition; more often than not, it is better to find Leyla towards the end of Market day for the best deals, as the first half of her day is usually spend in a sour mood, nursing a hangover.

If one was smart, when going to shop at Winging Away, one would bring their Raptor along for the trip. Instead of letting her years of experience go to waste, she instead opened a stall at the Market, giving her expertise away while selling fine pieces of craftsmanship to those willing to pay.
