[Flashback] Hasale'ith'savanht

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

10th day of Summer, 509 AV

Irriari walked through the grasses slowly and admired the faint spots of brown on the weeds and foliage as she passed them. Stains such as these sang to her heart. They were blood stains, and based on the amount of blood and the location on the grass, Irriari knew that whatever was had left this much blood was very close by and most likely dead. She reached down and plucked one of the blades of grass and licked it. The blood was from a large cat, or perhaps a wild dog. She couldn't tell the difference, but it definitely wasn't a human. Irriari quickly lost interest after this revelation and chastised herself for not focusing on what she had came her for- poison reagents. She knew so little about poison, and her slaves were beyond tired of begging every trader they saw for new books and bottles to add to her library and kit. The traders could have not sold such wares, as they proclaimed, or they could have simply been cautious to sell the books to those affiliated with the Zith. Whatever the reason, Irriari was sick of the damp caverns and predictable fungi that grew within them. There was little the imposing sky less caverns had to offer her anymore, besides companionship and safety.

She planned to stay for two days, carefully ingesting, and testing various plants that were known to her and her race in the Sea of Grass. Maybe she should have grabbed the wild animal. Hunger was already paining her, but she could not eat for the next two days. She grimaced as her stomach reminded her of the difficulties she would face. Hunger was nothing but weakness, and she have to keep going, for the sake of training.

After a few chimes of slowly examining every leaf, grass, weed and piece of foliage her eyes could take in, Irriari finally spotted it- a plant known to her people as 'Hasale'ith'savanht'. There was no word for the plant in Common, as far as she knew, but many warriors had cautioned her about the dangers of it. Irriari dug a deep holes next to the plant, on the four sides surrounding it to be completely sure that the roots system was localized to a small area, so that she could gather the entire plant. Irriari then proceeded to join the holes together, leaving the Hasale'ith'savanht plant on it's own dirt island of sorts, isolated from all the other grasses, connected only to the loamy soil below it.

Irriari stared at the rare plant then, and took in every detail of it that she could. The leaves were a simple textured mint green on the top, but underneath the oblong, toothed leaf was a deep burgundy color, like a fine ripe wine, though Irriari had only seen pictures of the fabled drink. The stem was hardy, as nearly every life form was on the plains, though unlike many of the other plants, this one did not seek to grow above all the grasses adjacent to it. Though Irriari had seen no more than four Hasale'ith'savanht, they all seemed stunted at the same short height, regardless of their location or proximity to other plants. The root system however, was quite deep and had a large bulb growing at the bottom. It was a common insult among Zith children, to call other weaker members of the colony, fat and short, like a Hasale'ith'savanht. Though the bulb was not poisonous, Irriari intended to collect the whole plant for future study, if she could determine how to dry such a thing when the caverns were so damp. After a few minutes of clawing the dirt, Irriari finally extracted the plant and laid it on the ground next to her.

In some ways, the plant was similar to her whole race. Alone and isolated, yet still a threat, and with roots that were a pain to dig out. If the other races did ever kill her species at the base, would their efforts be useless, like the bulb of the plant? Most likely. The humans and all the other races shunned and feared her kind because of the blood shed and slaughter the Zith had brought to the land. To her, there was nothing hidden about her race, nothing so sneaky like the devious whispered plans of the humans. Everything one needed to know was on the surface, open for view and scrutiny. She hated them for their indirect spineless ways, loathed them for ther insistance on stamping out all that was unknown. If they could not eliminate an undesirable, they would isolate it, in hopes that it would die on its own. She refused to be weeded out, or caught up in their schemes. Irriari vowed that she would not become like the Hasale'ith'savanht, she would not be a toy for the humans, ripe for the picking.

[Flashback] Hasale'ith'savanht

Postby Irriari on May 13th, 2011, 8:51 pm

Irriari examined the Hasale'ith'savanht, knowing that if it was to be of any use to her she would have to memorize every part of the plant, and all the features of it. How she wish she had a book to write in so that she could catalog and draw the plant. It would do her little good as she didn't know how to write, but at the very least a quick sketch could jog her memory.

Irriari carefully snapped the plant in two, with a clean break where the base of the plant met the root structure. She set the root and bulb aside for now, and inspected the short stalk and the six leaves it supported. Many would suspect that the plant was poisonous due to the red coloring on the underside of the leaf but there were many exceptions to this rule. Red did not always mean danger. Milky white sap was dripping onto her fingers where the break occurred. More often than not, this meant that some part of the plant was poisonous, though the particular section of the plant was still unknown.

Irriari picked the two leaves closest to the base first and put the rest of the plant aside. One of the leaves was broken in half, while the other remained whole. One of the broken pieces was placed on the inside of her right wrist, and the other leaf, still whole, was placed on her right. Now, she would have to wait the requisite 15 chimes to see if the plant, in its raw form, would cause any irritation.

Zith were notoriously impatient, and this time was no different for Irriari. There was nothing she could do aside from sit and wait. Next time, she should bring a slave to test the poisons for her. Or perhaps multiple ones, to speed up the whole process. As wonderful as the idea sounded, Irriari knew that she wanted to be the one to test all the poisons both the build up immunities to them, and also to know the effects firsthand. If a victim faked the symptoms of a poison, assuming they knew that they were poisoned, she could be easily tricked and taken off guard. But the time passed by so slowly. At least nothing itched or burned.

After fifteen chimes Irriari concluded that the plant was useless as a contact poison in this form. It was a pity, because contact poisons were much easier to use then poisons that took their effect by ingestion, inhalation or wounds. Next, Irriari would have to take three chimes for each of the leaves and put them against her lips. While shorter then the previous step, this was vital, as all the poison crafting books said. Those who jumped straight to putting the plant matter in their mouths, or worse, eating it, risked facing the full effects of the plant and possible death.

Neither of the leaves produced any reaction outside of annoyance with Irriari, and so she moved on, grumbling all the while, to the next step in the process. She was thankful that very few steps remained, but still annoyed that it took so long.

Irriari chewed one of the leaves and held it in her cheek, trying to ignore the bitter and revolting taste. Zith were not meant to eat or consume plants, and the taste, while so far not poisonous, could drive someone to insanity with how horrid the flavor was, she was sure. After 15 more chimes, nothing had happened and Irriari clawed the earth in anger. Had the Elders not said that this plant was poisonous? A blight to the warriors who tried to subsist on plants when nothing else was available? Yes, that was what they had said, but so far, nothing had happened.

Irriari swallowed the lump of plant material, knowing that the next eight bells would be the hardest. Now, she was not allowed to eat anything in case it happened to alter or negate the effects of the poison. But on the bright side, she could go looking for more of the elusive plant while she waited.

[Flashback] Hasale'ith'savanht

Postby Irriari on May 14th, 2011, 12:37 am

Irriari carefully wrapped the dismantled Hasale'ith'savanht in a scrap of cloth she had tied to her quiver and stood up slowly. If the plant was a hallucinogen there was little she could do but if it made her dizzy standing up quickly could be very bad. There were no naked dancing Akalaks or other disturbing illusions and she seemed as steady on her feet as ever so Irriari continued on in search of both the Hasale'ith'savanht and other odd plants for later testing.

As she walked, Irriari realized that for the first time she was truly seeing the grasses around her. Though it was dark outside, her night vision showed her so much, and she wondered how other races lived so blindly. Long grasses created the rolling, never ending effect that so many people commented on when they first saw the sea of grass. Short stalks with delicate white bell lillies popped up next to thorny and aromatic weeds. Some people failed to see the beauty in these grasses, and called them bland, but to Irriari this landscape was as varied as the jungle.

Irriari collected as many plants as she could, looking for thorned or acidic smelling ones in particular. There was no guarantee that any of them were poisonous but she wanted to be able to collect them, and possibly have one of the slaves diagram them when she made it back to the caverns. Seven bells had passed, and she had only found one more Hasale'ith'savanht plant. It was a maddening search, and she would kill all the Elders herself if this was simply a joke, meant to torment her because she was interested in something other than physical combat.

Irriari was pretty sure, that after seven and a half bells if nothing had happened at that point, a half bell would make little difference. She already knew, based on the Elders words, that the root wasn't poisonous. She also knew that the milky white sap in plants was often a signal that the plant was less than palatable. Irriari grabbed the stalk of the first Hasale'ith'savanht plant she had dissected and broke the stalk and placed it against the inside of her elbow. It itched slightly within the first chime and Irriari almost screamed with joy. Finally, something.

Irriari quickly popped a portion of the stalk into her mouth and chewed it. The putrid slimy mass burned going down her throat and Irriari retched, but the plant was already too far down her throat. Fear hit her chest like a cold war hammer, as she realized what her hastiness could very well cost. The Elders had not said a word about it killing her, but this plant could do anything. Irriari quickly strapped her quiver on her back and gripped her short bow tightly, though she knew that she could not fight off this enemy with arrows of claws.

[Flashback] Hasale'ith'savanht

Postby Irriari on May 14th, 2011, 1:23 am

Irriari screamed, as the burning got worse and worse, the further down the plant went. She clawed the nearest tree viciously and laughed as flakes of bark flew off. If asked, she would swear that a familiar was stabbing her insides with a ice coated dagger. However, she knew that no one would ask. She was alone and now, for once in her life she was prey. Her fingers shook as she clenched the short bow with one hand and her abdomen with the other. The tips of her claws were cutting through skin, but a little more pain meant nothing. Irriari hoped that she would pass out and prayed that she would die.

Fifteen chimes passed and Irriari had sworn through most of the pain until the nausea hit. She dry heaved and dry heaved again. Finally she could pass out. She could almost see it through the red haze. But she breathed in enough air during those horrible minutes to keep herself conscious.

For a minute, Irriari considered the merits of tying her hands to a tree before she clawed out her intestines, or her idiotic impulsive brain for getting her into this situation. Irriari fell to her knees and punched the ground over and over, heedless of her claws that lacerated her hands in the process. It didn't matter what happened to her body now... she just wanted this to be over.

After another bell, it was finally, mercifully done. The Elders were right. Again. After inspecting her torn body and the damage she had done to the surrounding area, Irriari knew she would be lucky if she was healed in two weeks. The others in the colony would laugh, they would scorn her for her maimed hands, feet and stomach. It would be well deserved, but now she knew the danger of the Hasale'ith'savanht.

Poison had done this to her, and if brewed correctly it could do the same to anyone who crossed her, with the right application. She smiled as she took the sky and flew towards her colony. Physical combat would not debilitate her enemies mentally, not like this poison could. For the first time since she found the Hasale'ith'savanht plant, Irriari smiled.

Time to reap what you have sown!

Just as we have two eyes and two feet, duality is part of life.

~Carlos Santana

Name of the character: Irrari

Skill points: +5 observation, +3 investigation, +2 botany and +3 poison.

Lores: Thinking outside of the box..er cave, Hasale'ith'savanht – it’s harder to find it than to spell it, Feeling lucky, Finding yourself within a plant, Being reminded of the unconditional hate for humans, Refusing to be weeded out like a plant, Trying to learn patience, Trying to understand Hasale'ith'savanht fully, Haste makes waste, Experiencing Hasale'ith'savanht poisoning and It was all worth it!

Additional comments: A nice little thread, and although I know next to nothing about plant based poisons other than the mundane stuff, I can say that even I could follow through the thread. Oh, and you can feel free to add 2 of those plants to your inventory; I won’t allow you to claim any other herb as you did not specify on anything nor did you write how you came across them in the first place. You too need to be reminded of the danger from prolonged stays in the Sea of Grass, especially alone; so do keep that in mind. Keep them coming! :)
