The Inner Workings of One's Own Mind (Solo)

Postby Alric Wilmot on September 10th, 2011, 11:00 pm

Alric paced back and forth in his small dwelling. He kicked up dust and scuffed the floor, making an already poor place look even poorer. He lived in the former guest house of the Wilmot Family.

Once upon a time, the Wilmot Family was rich beyond measure. They would never allow dust to settle on their floors... Well, except Alric's great great grandmother, Abigale. She collected dust, dirt too. Occasionally she would even try to collect samplings of mud. But for some mysterious reason, it always turned to dirt when left by itself. That had always been a bit of a mystery. Although, at the moment, Alric did not especially need to understand that mystery. (He was fairly certain that water turned to a gaseous state and left mud, thereby leaving only dirt because mud was a combination of the two. Although, Alric was also fairly certain that water did not like mud because it made water feel ugly, hence why water left it.)

No, at this particular moment, Alric was trying to think of a good way to learn about his biological parents. He loved his Father dearly, of course. But Alric was all about experiencing new people, places, and experiences. He was growing agitated with himself lately, however, because he did not fully understand his past. He was having a hard time focusing on the new, when the old had yet to be understood. However, that was the problem. The memories were so old, he could not remember what his parents had ever looked like.

He needed to know his past, so that he could understand it, and move on to a more interesting topic, like which lizards were blue. Or, why weren't all lizards blue? Now that was something interesting!

Alric stopped his pacing and stroked his chin. He had just thought of something. Hypnotism. He might be able to use Hypnosis to fix this particular problem. He wondered, though. Could one hypnotize themselves? He smirked a bit, honestly wondering why he was even worried about it. If it could be done, he could do it. If it could not, then he wouldn't. It really was that easy. All he had to do was try. If he failed, he'd be right back where he started. If he succeeded, he could move on to the lizard question.

He gave off a sigh and headed to the small table in his house. On it was the old book on Hypnotism he had bought so long ago. He had thought he learned all he could from it, but he decided it may be worth his while to go over a certain section one more time, just to refresh his memory.

After skimming through the glossary and coming onto the page in question, Alric read what he had read about 100 times before. He had never actually practiced putting someone in a trance, he thought he had understood the basics well enough without someone volunteering to undergo the technique. However, he was now a little uncertain. He came across a small stub at the end of the page that just so happened to be exactly what he was looking for.

Alric nearly burst open with joy, and clapped his hands together in a childish fit of excitement. He quickly got calmed himself down and began to read the article.

Self-Hypnosis
-noun
The state or act of hypnotizing oneself.

To effectively incur self-hypnosis is a useful, but often overlooked ability of the hypnotist. It is quite simple, but many who learn hypnotism do not do so for the benefits of self-hypnotism. Of course, the greatest reason that it is often over-looked stems from the fact that it is far easier to be tempted into Overgiving, depending on the Hypnotist's goals. One of the more dangerous attempts of self-hypnosis is to try and eradicate an addiction or undesirable personality trait. Often, a Hypnotist that attempts to rid himself of undesirable qualities, will feel immense satisfaction of doing so, which leads the Hypnotist to continue and eradicate personality traits or behaviors. It has caused the complete breakdown of many wizards, and is not recommended to the Novice Hypnotist.

Alric frowned, the article didn't go any further than that. It did not explain how to induce it, and did not even touch on the matter he wanted to accomplish! He was fine just the way he was, in his opinion. All he wanted to do was search his own mind for a subconscious memory! A single picture to show him what his parents looked like! Surely he had one of their faces stored in his head somewhere?

He snorted, and slammed the book shut with flick of his wrist. He was no novice! Not exactly an expert, but still! He was good enough to do this, surely? He'd just have to wing it if the stupid book wouldn't teach him. At this point in his self-taught education, the book was more of a reminder anyway. He picked up the knife at the end of the table and placed it to reflect back into his eyes. Alric didn't own a mirror, so the knife would be the next best thing.

He sat down at the table, and began to relax his muscles. First, he relaxed his jaw and shoulders, rotating them and stretching them before he let them go slack. Next, was his thighs and and calve muscles, he did the same as his jaw and shoulders. He went through the process with every muscle he could flex, and then breathed a great big sigh. It was hard to hypnotize someone who new it was coming, and on edge. So he'd have to be as relaxed as possible, to allow him to overcome the fact he knew it was coming.

Finally, he looked into the reflection the knife gave of his eyes, and attempted to do what he had never done before, to induce a trance.

"You will now go into that place between sleep and consciousness, Alric," He said. "You need to relax and accept this, you want this, you know you do. All you need to do, is go back. Go back to your earliest memory, Alric."

Suddenly, Alric began to feel his self-hypnotism begin to work. He could see, in his mind's eye, the earliest memory in his conscious mind. It was his of him as a small boy, riding on his Father's shoulders through the streets of Alvadas. Unfortunately, it was his real father and not his biological one. He decided to continue.

"That's very good Alric, but we need to go further, further okay? You need to go back. Go back to the time that you did not know how to walk. Go back to the time that you did not know how to talk. Go back to the time... that you didn't want to understand."

That seemed to have triggered something, because Alric nearly dropped the Knife. He could see the stars above the city, and a hooded woman's face near his own. She was hugging him to her body. And he suddenly realized that this woman was his mother! He was at the perfect angle to see her face, but his memory was having trouble filling in the details.

"C'mon Alric, just a bit more, Alllll the way back. You need to remember. Remember, Alric. You want to remember, you need to Remember..."

He strained to look upon her face, he needed to know her, to understand her. His eyes began to water from the concentration, blurring his eyes and making it harder to see his reflection. in turn, that made it harder to focus. But it didn't stop him. Slowly, ever so slowly, details began to fill out. He could see the color of her eyes. They were a beautiful sea-green, the same as his own. Her hair was frizzy, and...red. She had red hair. Her face, it came to him then, in an instant of perfect clarity. But soon she pulled the hood over her face once more, and laid him down on the ground in front of a door, and began to blur again. She eventually turned back to shadow.

He wiped his eyes of the water, it was positively leaking! His lap had actually gotten wet from his... watery eyes? Alric looked at his sleeve, which had been stained a deep red. He looked down at the floor and saw large droplets and his lap stained as well. Apparently, he had over-estimated his abilities.

Without warning he fell out of his chair exhausted. He brought the knife back to reflect his eyes, and saw that they were severely bloodshot. He could have smiled then. He had never before experienced Overgiving! It hurt! And then, he began to realize something else... his lips weren't moving during that last bit of goading. Alric then began to shiver. He was now fairly sure that he had three new experiences under his belt. And for some reason, it scared him much more than it excited him.

Notes:
Intelligence isn’t actually intellect in the skills sense; it’s more in the ‘special ops’ or Sherlock Holms form of the word; gathering intelligence on targets and such. I didn’t feel that you’d really done anything like that, so I didn’t give it to you.

But still a wonderful thread, so don’t let that get you down; Alric makes me smile. We need more wacky persons like you in our city. If you have any issues with the rating feel free to approach me.
