Summer 57th, 512 AV

The sound of bone cracking split the air. Bloodied splinters pinged as they hit the floor. Everything was silent except for the harsh sound of back and forth motions from a saw. No one spoke. No one moved. Then a guttural scream echoed through the air.

The patient had lifted his head, eyes wide as he stared down at Lixue's hands. Sweat ran in rivulets down his face, dark hair clinging to his forehead. Fisted hands gripped the side of the table so hard his veins were clearly defined. He wore nothing besides a sheet placed modestly over his hips. A whimper slid from between his pursed lips. For a moment, Lixue paused and turned her head. The man made eye contact, froze, and must have seen that there was no going back. Another scream burst from his mouth. Panic caused a desperate tone to enter his voice as the man shouted, "No! No! Get back! Oh my god. Get back! No!"

Lixue spoke sharply, bluntly, "Be quiet! Settle down! And quit your screaming. You agreed to this, remember?" The man quieted for only a moment before glancing at his leg again and starting again. With a harsh sigh, Lixue flung a hand at one of the assistants distractedly. "I want him silenced. Gag him, but make sure he does not choke on his tongue. There is a need for more sugar to stop the bleeding. Please, hold him down!" Hearing that he would be kept quiet, the man tried to jerk his body around. It was necessary to remove the saw. The nurses surrounding the table moved into position, several on each appendage.

"Ouch, he bit me!" someone exclaimed, nursing their hurt finger.

Lixue wasted no time in handing the bone saw to someone and making her way quickly towards the top of the table. When push came to shove and one of her employees was hurt, Lixue tolerated nothing past that point. Just like if a patient was injured uselessly by one of the staff. The problem was dealt with swiftly. Slapping her hands down onto the table next to his head, Lixue leaned in close. Green eyes held bridled fury and the man edged away. Lixue grasped his cheeks between one hand, nails biting into his flesh. To help with the ache, his mouth opened. "How dare you hurt one of my assistants, when they are doing a required job." Lowering to a whisper, Lixue continued, "You have a disease. An unstoppable one. If your leg is not amputated, you will die. Do you understand?" A pause. "Because you seemed to when you agreed to this operation. And I am holding you to those words, not your current ones. I am going to continue with this surgery and you, you are going to behave. Cause me any more problems and you will not receive anything for the pain. Think I won't do it? Try me." Releasing his mouth, Lixue coldly raised an eyebrow as she stared down at the man.

"Hand me the gag, please." The cloth was placed in Lixue's outstretched palm. Gripping the man by his long hair clinging to his forehead, Lixue mercilessly pulled his head up. The cloth was snaked underneath his cranium and she meticulously set his head back down. Pulling his mouth down, she lay the fabric across before releasing. Swift work was made of the knots required to keep him quiet. Perhaps she had tightened it a bit too much, but the man did not even make so much as a whimper. A moment of stiff tension mounted between Lixue and the man with eye contact; Lixue's cold and the man's frightened. As she turned away, Lixue smoothed the hand that had grasped his sweaty hair down the side of her pants.

The cane tapping against the floor was the only sound in the room as Lixue made her way back down by the man's right leg. Before she could retrieve the bone saw from the assistant, someone else burst into the room. Green eyes flashed to the person, annoyance clearly read inside. "Yes?" the question was sardonic.

"Um…" the woman glanced away, uncertain at the sight of Lixue's anger, "there is a man… he… wishes to see you." Moving her eyes from the employee, they instead pierced the person standing behind her.

"I see. You may leave." The dismissal was smooth and abrupt. "Come in," she spoke to the man, a chill in her voice. "Sit over there. Be silent. If I hear as much as a sigh from you, you will escorted out of Nature's Nurture until another day. Do you understand? No. Don't answer that. Sit." Nodding at the seat next to the door, Lixue did not wait to make sure her demands would be followed. They would.

The situation at hand was more important than a conversation that could wait.

Home Away From Home

Returning to the leg, Lixue swished a rag around in the water before straightening it out and laying it on the half-sawed stump. Water soaked into the wound, cleansing it without the harsh scrubbing or dabbing that would have only caused more pain and suffering. Not that Lixue would have minded, but torturing someone was not in her nature, even when riled. She held the water bowl below the knee, to catch the red droplets. With the other hand, she scrunched the rag up; to force any excess water out and onto the stub. After, the rag was unceremoniously dropped back into the dish and handed to an assistant.

The assistant who had scurried away for sugar returned. Handing the wooden jar to Lixue, he stepped back into line. Thankfully, the man's sweat had washed away a hint of the blood on Lixue's hands. Without hesitation, she dived into the dish. Her hand was still wet and sugar clung. Sprinkling the edible crystals over the gap, making sure to have them land on any still bleeding areas. The same assistant took the jar back, setting it off to the side for future use. Lixue casually brushed the sugar off, watching the man. He seemed absolutely petrified, which was excusable. But he did not seem to trust Lixue. After her recent bout of anger, she could not blame him, but still felt slightly insulted. If she did not know she could help, Lixue would not have become a doctor!

"Bone saw, please," Lixue held out her hand, voice formal and devoid of emotion. Still she held the man's gaze, until the saw was placed in her hand. Then she glanced down, tested the sharpness of the teeth, and caught his eyes again. Almost tauntingly before turning away sharply.

Her right hand was placed on the man's thigh, her left holding the handle of the saw. "Keep him still." At such simple words, yet so commanding, the nurses scurried into position; forcing the man to stay calm. Carefully, Lixue lowered the saw back into position. Her right hand pressed down hard, situated on the outside edge of the thigh. With deliberate movements, Lixue slanted the saw so the handle was at an upward angle.

And then she moved.

Her elbow came backwards, fingers tight on the saw, and cool eyes concentrating on the job at hand. The saw bit into the bone, resisted movement and then gradually began to shift. Bone-dust fell to the floor below and, every now and then, a splinter tinged as it landed at Lixue's feet. Doing such an act was not easy on Lixue's tiny body and she felt the force in her upper arms and shoulder each time she completed a stroke.

The man whimpered once before his eyes rolled back in his head. "Pulse?"

A nurse was quick in answering, "Still there, Doctor Lixue."

Instead of answering, Lixue nodded. As long as there was a pulse, the man would be alright. Besides, he wasn't excessively losing blood. The saw continued the rhythmic motions until nearly half way through the painted red bone. And then she changed the direction of her sawing, angled the bone saw to move back and forth from her torso instead of up and down in the direction of her face. Tight fingers were readjusted.

And she moved again. The same resistance was met and overcome. Lixue settled her hand on top of the man's hairy thigh, pressing downward in an attempt to keep the leg from moving so much. There was a harsh sound of bone cracking before the saw took an unexpected downward twist. Lixue jerked upward, keeping the saw from mutilating even more flesh. The man's limp body gave a shudder before going still again.

Replacing the bone saw with an amputation knife, Lixue inspected the sharpness of the blade. The knife was curved and used to slice through flesh before meeting the bone. From there, the bone saw came into play. The flesh and skin was flapping uselessly, hanging from where the knee used to be. Though it was dangerous to angle any knife toward the body, this one was designed for the movement at any angle. Unless the person was amazingly flexible. Looking at the leftover skin, Lixue handed the amputation knife back.

Her fingers pulled the flesh upward, seeing if it would cover the gaping wound. It did. Barely. Pulling both sides when sewing would be difficult and tedious, but necessary. "Two assistants." The command was quickly followed with two Jamoura stepping up on either side of her. "Hold this side, pull it gently." Using her own hands, Lixue showed the Jamoura where to grasp; above where the knee had been. "Be careful, the skin risks breaking." To the other, she folded the skin upward again. With a quick nod, Lixue explained her intentions: sew the flesh together and hope the stitches don't break with any sort of swelling.

A sharp needle and non-colored thread were gathered. While she waited, Lixue kept a cloth pressed against the wound to keep the man from losing too much blood. She would have used sugar, but that could have gotten in the way of the needle and thread. Taking the sewing utensil, Lixue tested the tip for sharpness before having someone else thread it. Her own hands were too bloody and slippery.

Starting at the left side with both Jamouras holding the flesh together, Lixue pierced the skin. The movement had become so natural, she barely felt the resistance. She shoved through to the other side before having someone cut the thread. Taking both ends, Lixue tied them in a knot. As with all stitches, it was necessary to allow room for swelling and cutting. This pattern was completed nearly every inch, or inch and a half, until the skin was sewn together. Lixue sprinkled sugar over the end result, after washing the amputation.

Home Away From Home

Somewhere, during the procedure, Lixue's anger had faded. It left her feeling drained. She seemed ten years older than she was; tired. "Lixue," someone murmured. With slightly unfocused eyes, Lixue glanced up in question. "The patient has died." What? "I am so sorry." A slow nod from Lixue before she turned away.

Had she been expecting this? The man had had something growing on his leg, inside and out. It spread like wildfire, brought him pain and risked his life. An amputation was supposed to help. To, literally, take away the problem. But… looking back to the man's harsh reaction to surgery once it was started, Lixue wondered if going through with the actions had caused the death or if the shock had set in and no one had noticed. Either way, Lixue did not know if she wanted to be informed. Going through the motions, Lixue rinsed her hands off and left the room. It was stifling and seemed as if the walls were caving in.

The man who she had snapped at earlier followed. His arms wrapped around her and his head rested on top of hers. For a moment, Lixue stiffened, uncertain of who was touching her, before breathing in the rich scent of snow. No matter where he was, Ly always smelled like snow. Upon this realization, Lixue turned in his arms and wrapped her own around his waist. Her face was buried in his stomach. "I am guessing this means the lunch date is off?" A pathetic attempt at a joke. No smile begged at Lixue's lips like Ly wanted.

Instead, she burst into tears. Ly panicked, shushing her, and murmuring sweet things in order to regain control of the situation. Tears soaked his shirt, and harsh sobs echoed around the pair. "Shhh, shhh, what's wrong, baby?" The words only made Lixue cry harder.

"I," sob, "killed him!" Sob. A sniffle was thrown in as well. "I lost my," cry, "temper and he d-d-died!" The words were torn from her throat. The guilt ate her and the scene replayed in her mind. How had she lost control like that? How could she risk a patient, when she was always preaching about the patients coming first? The cane was held against Ly's back, curled into Lixue's fisted hand.

"Hey, hey," typical male, Ly was frightened by salty liquids coming from the eyes of women. Awkwardly, he cradled Lixue in the hallway. His attention was on her and neither noticed nurses and assistants moving past. "We'll go home, okay? And I'll make you something to eat and we'll talk. Or not talk, if you want!"

"I do not," dry sob, "want to go home!" Lixue wiped her face against his stomach. "I want to go," a pause as Lixue sniffled, "home." Leaning backwards, her arms still around him, Lixue glanced up at Ly. Home-sickness, truth, and the sadness of a woman twenty years her senior lay in Lixue's eyes. "I need to go home, Ly. Please, understand. I miss my family. I miss my life. I miss… everything. This," a sniffle, "trip was only to be until the Spires was back on their feet. They're back on their feet!" Voice still wobbly, Lixue spoke clearly and with truth ringing. "Please…"

Silent for a moment, Ly stared down at his wife, thinking. Finally, with a jerky nod, he nodded. "What of our home here? What of what we have here? When will we leave? How?"

"We will… Give them away. Let someone else who needs them have them." An uncertain smile bounced across Lixue's mouth as she tugged Ly's head down to hers and gave him a quick kiss. "We will leave in… four days time. And we will manage. Somehow."

"If you are certain, my love."

"I am."
