The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

Leth smiled upon the city, the night alive within the sparkling scene. Lu enjoyed the night, as it was his time to train. Besides the aesthetic pleasures, training at night made fighting under Syna much easier. The young Shinya lived for training. He felt as if he could always learn and improve, to become a defending hand of his Patroness, the Lady of Stars. Tonight the current incursion of Zith was on his mind. The peaks were defensible but the strongest points of attack for the flying beasts were the spans between the peaks, where they could descend and pick off the non flying populace.

Standing at the beginning of the span at the home side of Shinyama, Lu held a staff in his right hand, a short sword tucked into his sash at his waist. Placing the staff at his feet, he began to stretch his body, preparing for a long and satisfying workout. Rolling at his waist, the fluid stretching motions moved like water , his legs extending and rotating, the tide flowing up to his torso and his arms, muscles flexing and relaxing. Citizens walked across the span often, as night brought debauchery and many enjoyed such at the Star's Shadow on his current side. His palms placed together, he bowed to the bridge, which contained his thanks to Zintila and to Wysar, his hope for Her literal support and His continued focus.

Eyes opening, he imagined Zith divebombing and circling above, his mind's eye a practiced form of imaginative media, thanks to constant meditation. Lu slid his right foot beneath the staff, kicking it up, his right hand grasping it firmly. His left hand began to thrust out in rapid succession, the staff used as a vertical barrier between himself and invisible danger. Using the point between the bridge's walls and its floor as an anchor, he dodged and weaved around it, punches flying. Moving a step at a time, he would place the staff diagonally with the right and punch with the left, switch hands and angles, using the right. Moving in this repetitive motion across the span, the rushing of the Amaranthine far below pushed him onward.

Forms and fighting only became fluid with endless repetition. The body and mind had to move effortlessly so that the consciousness could remain aware of its surroundings, constantly moving and adapting to each new threat. An entire crossing of the current movements continued until he reached the Sharai peak, sweat a fine layer over his body. A shrill cackle of citizens moving across the bridge made Lu imagine a scream of a person being carried off. Turning on his heel, he took the staff in two hands, pushing it out at each end, dropping it on the wall edges and picking it back up, turning it vertical and pushing it forward. Vertical, horizontal as he worked back across.

Crossing the Span

As he crossed, the aforementioned revelers came into view. This gave Lu the opportunity to be mindful of innocents in combat. Stopping and standing flush against the bridge's wall with staff at the ready, he bowed his head as the pair passed him. They were ladies and lovely ones at that, but Lu could not deviate from his focus. A short staccato burst of giggles and he brought the shaft of wood back to level before him, taking it in both hands.

Using it in a stance akin to digging with a shovel, he pushed forward, sweeping the staff across the smooth surface of the bridge's floor, tapping the staff in a rhythmic motion as he moved across the second half of the span. Arriving back at his point of origin on Shinyama, the Shinya crouched, placing the staff to the side, rising and turning back toward the long expanse. Bringing his feet into an even distance, his knees bent, he began to punch in eight spaces. Four on the left, four on the right. Low to medium to high. After each repetition, Lu would bring himself to center, bringing his knee up toward his chest and extending it out, kicking left then right. The foot would then move him up one step. A long and arduous process, Lu's body was wet with perspiration.

Fortunately the Spring night was cool, the winds whipping over the span keeping him cool in his exercise. Spotting a group of white robes at the other end, Lu took the opportunity to stop his movements, walking briskly toward the group of Initiates. In his focus, he had not initially see the young ones as they watched him. They bowed before him as he approached, some attempting to look busy. All were young except for one who appeared to be an adult, making an attempt to join the Shinya. Looking at the light haired man, he simply said, "Fetch me water." As expected, the man began to look at the younger Initiates around him. As one of them began to move in response, Lu curtly said, "No."

Pointing at the older man, he focused his attention on him. "When given an order by a superior, you follow it. Your height and age mean nothing. You are no better or worse than your fellow Initiates. Now get me a ladle of water from the Monastery before I return to that side." The youngers seemed to grin a bit, but Lu only slightly smirked as the older man started walking. Pulling his short sword from his sash, the Shinya surprised the Initiate with the sharp sound of steel sliding against skyglass. The older Initiate looked over his shoulder in surprise as Lu sliced the air before him in straight slashes.

"Step lively!"

As the length of wood moved in its patterns, Lu initially felt pride swell in his chest as he saw the Initiate return , carefully cradling the ladle. His good feelings became mixed as he approached the end of the span, as the Initiate was followed by Master Melle, a presence in her own right. One of his superiors, the thirty something year old woman had elevated herself as one of the elite which led many Riders and Protectors into battle. Her luxurious red locks spilling over her shoulders, her skill in unarmed combat only rivaled by her own superiors. Lu snapped into attention, his staff at rest at his side, sweat dripping over his form. Some of exertion, some of anticipation.

Her strides were strong, her posture impressive. Yes, she was a woman of beauty, but it was Lu's respect for her skill and poise which drew him to her. His breathing was slowing, her approach brought his eyes to the ground before him. Soon she and the Initiate arrived. Her voice was strong and yet supple, like the leather armor she had earned. "Gavima. Son of Shantsu." Her speech to him brought Lu's eyes up, meeting her own. "Yes, Ma'am." he held himself as a soldier, his eyes focused forward after he was spoken to. They moved to the ladle that Melle took from the Initiate, curtly dismissing him. She then held the ladle up and brought it to Lu's lips. The young Shinya drank, careful not to spill a drop. She stepped away handing the ladle off to another Shinya guard, who promptly left with it to return it to its resting place within the Monastery.

"Your father is a good man and a strong fighter. it seems you take after him in your ethic and serious manner. It's too bad for one so young to act so old." Lu did not know how to take her comments, so all he could respond with was, "Thank you, Madam Melle." His awkward response brought a trill of laughter from the Master. "You are welcome, Gavima." She shook her head slightly, the giggle remaining. It was contagious and Lu could feel his face slightly turning up, try as he might to remain somber. "Well, I know what might lighten your spirit. At ease." The command brought him to rest, though the staff remained firm in Lu's grasp.

"Your staff, please." Lu handed the weapon over, anxiety skittering over his back like icy spiders. Melle placed the staff on the ground and stepped toward Lu. Her subtle movements only increased the anticipation as he suspected what he might be in for. "Like your father, only fighting and training soothes your soul. I want you to be happy."Her arms came up in a practiced and solid form. Lu's did in kind, out of respect and discipline. Eyes were everywhere. The citizens for a show, his peers for a lesson.

"Keep your eyes on my hands. They are capable."

Lu focused in on her hands, nearly falling toward Melle as a a straight kick found his right shin. His eyebrows a mix of confusion and anger. Hers merely arched in kind, but facial contortions could no longer be registered. Lu had to bring himself back with the force of his torso, springing into an upright position, though he did successfully block an equally hard kick aimed for the head. Stepping back with her motions, her distraction tactic was well received and learned.

As with Elhaym, Lu found himself on the defensive, though his blocking was fairly sufficient. There seemed to be no opening to find purchase in the tumultuous crashing of waves in this martial ocean Melle brought to him. Suddenly, she stopped. This caused Lu to slide back into position, his breathing irregular from the workout. Melle smiled.

"You defend well, Gavima. Can you attack?"

This reminded him of the taunting he would receive from Elhaym. He knew it was for the right reas---

"Attack!

With a jolt of attention and vigor, Lu threw his own series of kicks at Melle, though his own seemed to seek weaknesses. He kicked at knees, at elbows, wrists and shoulders. She seemed to favor her left arm for some reason, so he retreated slightly for her to advance. When she did, her left arm punched out. Lu crouched and turned his back to her, a solid punch landing into her armpit. He thought he had done well, but suddenly, his body was spinning away and his next sight was the floor of the bridge,. It had happened so fast he wasn't even sure what had happened.

Eager to avoid retaliation, he quickly shook the cobwebs out and used his arms to push himself up and forward, tucking into a roll. Springing up and turning, he found she had not moved. She simply stood where she was, clapping softly. Lu had to find the inner calm to quell his rising temper. She certainly could outclass him. What was she playing at?!

"You escape well too, Gavima. Defending and escaping I will give you high marks for."

Her long and casual strides toward him had Lu on edge. His eyes scanned her. His senses were swimming a bit. He had to gain an edge and he knew only one way to do so. Shaking his head and wobbling purposefully, he fell against the wall of the bridge, looking down at the river so far below. He tried to do his best acting job of feeling queasy, though it could as well be reality. Her strides stopped. Leaning against the wall as he was, his left arm was hidden from view. He bowed his head in feigned malaise, his Projected arm freeing itself.

Lu knew he had only the one chance to make any kind of headway in this fight. Elhaym didn't like when he used Projection in a sneaky manner, but it worked. Bringing himself up to a standing position, he began to step forward, the Projected arm snaking along the side of the bridge out of sight. He had to bluff her.

She seemed interested, stepping cautiously like a tabby toward him, her strides having her pass the length of his astral arm. Now she was inside his reach. He had to go for it. With a short burst of speed, Lu jumped and threw out a snap kick at Melle's head. She easily sidestepped it and went in with a straight punch. Lu used a hard two knuckle strike inside her thrusting elbow, to deflect the punch. His astral arm came from behind to strike at her knee and get an advantage.

However, nothing happened. Well, Master Melle laughed at him. "Gavima, I applaud your efforts. Do you think I might also be trained in Projection a tad?" At this point, she stepped aside and Lu's mouth involuntarily swung open like a hatch with a loose chain. There was the shape of his astral arm, firmly gripped in what seemed to be ropes of some sort. Astral ropes? Smiling, Melle instructed him. "For your age, Lu, your Projection is extraordinary. Once you reach another plateau, you will realize that not only does the physical form have no restriction of the astral, but the astral is more you than the body."

Her grip was released and their respective limbs began to work themselves back into their bodies. "[i]I want you to work on aggressive postures and attacking. Your defense and evasion is superb, but sometimes you must strike first. All in all, I wish you well.[i]"
Her bow was received in kind as Lu simply said, "Thank you, Master Melle." She passed him, no doubt on her way to the Okomos. Lu massaged his arm and thought hard on what she said. It would no doubt become the subject of many meditations to come.
