Second of two mandatory work threads Summer 513 AV

OOCThere is no description yet of Acting and it’s skill progression in the skill list. There is only a stub. I made a tentative text to use as background for my acting work threads. It’s in the spoiler.

Description of Acting and it’s Skill Progression :
THE WORK LIFE OF AN ACTOR
The glory of the stage, the allure of fame and the promise of stardom can all be tempting to people drawn to acting. But the reality of the profession is often much different. The average actors may spend a lifetime trying to find steady employment, and may never reach anything close to fame. But, actors can make a living at their craft, and can be found in almost every city.

The life of an actor can be hectic and stressful. These workers are often employed for short periods, from a day to a month at a time, and can struggle to find regular employment. When they find work, actors can often spend long and irregular hours in rehearsals and performances. Working on weekends, evenings and even holidays is common. Unless performing in a production going on for a long time, actors rarely earn regular income. They typically work under a defined contract, lasting from a day to a few months. Many actors maintain secondary employment during times when they are not acting.

Audition
To get a role, an actor auditions in front of directors and producers. This can consist of performing a memorized monologue, improvising a performance or reading entirely from a script. And actor may need to audition for hundreds of hours and never get a role.

Research
Research is important in discovering the writer's intentions with the script and the meaning behind the lines. Research may involve reading other scripts by the same writer, watching plays by the same director, or discovering historical facts. This can also involve researching aspects of the character, such as his profession and lifestyle.

Rehearse
An actor brings a role to life by rehearsing the part under the guidance of a director. This involves memorizing lines, following directorial cues and discovering ways of interacting with fellow actors so the final performance is polished and exciting.

Perform
Through the use of talent, technique and perseverance, an actor portrays roles to bring characters alive for an audience. She not only expresses emotional intent through speech and action, but she may need to sing and dance as well.

Teach novice actors
Lead exercises and discussions. Supervise, support and evaluate students.

Director
Lead auditions and hire actors. Supervise and direct discussions, research, rehearsals and performances.

SKILL PROGRESSION

Novice (Amateur actors)
The novice actor/actress will spend much time on training. They can also train dance and song.It will be exercises, improvisation, storytelling, and place/imagination work. Novice students explore voice, stage and character movement, character development,, monologues, improvisations, games, and character and technique presentations. Scene choices will highlight each student’s progress and own uniqueness. At this level, students begin to develop acting skills needed to create truthful characters. They learn memorization techniques and overcoming stage fright. They can perform as extras/setting, or in minor supporting roles of lesser importance in a play.

Competent (Actors in Average Entertainment Plays)
The competent actor/actress has developed … They can portray a characterin a reasonably convincing way and do a decent job of it. They can perform in any role of a play, and participates in ensemble building through a mix of scenes work, research, discussions. They are familiar with tecniques for rehearsal of various kind of scenes. They can perform both in lead roles and minor roles in the average “standard” play, and in minor roles in more challenging plays and performances.

Expert (Experimental and Challenging Acting)
The advanced actors can work as actors, but also as teacher of other actors and as director or writer of plays. They prepare and present/perform in public performances that are challenging in nature. At this level innovation, experimentation and critical thinking are important and

Master (Art)
Like advanced, but even more progressed. The emphasis is on the actors/directors/writers individual expertise and expression, with advanced research and analysis, personality, psychology, philosophy and so on.

The Audition (Work Thread #2 Summer 513 AV)

Postby Amolina on August 24th, 2013, 4:50 pm

The Audition for The Happy Stryfer was held in a simple and cheap location in The Docks. It looked like a warehouse…But Amolina didn’t hesitate to step in. Auditions were more often than not held in inexpensive places.

Entering the building silently, she looked around. It really looked like a warehouse, and even simpler than she had expected. The room was empty, and had no windows. The auditions was done inside a half circle lanterns placed on the floor, shadows moving over the wall behind when the performer danced. Though Amolina had been at odd auditions before, she was intrigued.

She was early. Another audition was still ongoing. The performer was blonde, voluptuous, beautiful and at the end of singing her song. The light from the lanterns made her hair look like gold. Feeling a bit troubled, Amolina watched the blonde start to dance…the competition was obviously serious.

A man with long curly black hair was watching the show. His unbuttoned velvet jacket and his trousers and boots were as black as his hair except his shirt, but his shirt was white and richly decorated with cascades of lace falling from the high neck and spilling out from the ends of the jacket’s sleeves. The expression on his face was serious and focused.

A woman stood at his side. She was thin, skinny, looking starved even, her cheeks slightly hollow. The woman’s eyes were looking very big and dark and her light brown hair was arranged in a high, elaborate and somewhat fluffy style that made her pale face look bony. She had on a pale grey blouse with embroideries and a long plain skirt of darker grey cloth. It was beautiful, or at least interesting, in a colorless and spooky way.

Now and then the two strangers spoke with each other in low voices. It was impossible to hear what they were saying, from where Amolina stood, right inside the door.

When the blonde’s performance ended she went to sit on a crate at the other side of the room. it was Amolina’s turn to perform. Her posture straight in order to strengthen her self-assurance, Amolina walked over to the man in black and the thin woman, greeted them politely and waited for instructions.

“I’m Seymor Essing, director”. The man didn’t smile. His voice was serious and professional. “And this is Aydury Hines. Our décor and costume specialist. ” Aydery Hines nodded briefly. Her odd and fluffy light brown mass of hair bobbed. Seymor Essing made a gesture towards the half circle of lanterns. “The stage is yours, Miss Moletta.”

The Audition (Work Thread #2 Summer 513 AV)

Postby Amolina on August 24th, 2013, 4:51 pm

Amolina took off her cloak, left it on a crate, and entered the half circle framed by lanterns that served as “stage”. The atmosphere in the room was unexpected and mystical to say the least. It seemed absurd to perform The Barmaid Monologue from The Dastard of The Docks in this place, in this unusual arrangement of lanterns, in front of Seymor Essing and Aydery Hines.

Perhaps she ought to have chosen something else. But the instructions for the audition had been clear : the first monologue was to be comedic. Amolina had rehearsed this monologue and the only thing she could do now was perform. She started by making a short presentation of her topic.

“The Dastard of the Docks. Yes. We are familiar with that play. Please go on.” Seymor Essing, seriously.

Amolina walked back and forth over the floor, alternating between the quick movements of a barmaid moving between tables in a tavern, a the slower, compose and elegant movements of the rich young woman in disguise she was supposed to act as. The doubleness of the body language had not been in the role at the time she had played it. This was new – Amolina had added it after rehearsing for a while.

She started to speak and the monologue flowed out of her just the right way, just like a fairly competent actress should make it. Not overwhelmingy good, but certainly not bad. As it was a monologue held in a tavern with a bad reputation, the monologue was an orgy in bawdy jokes and absurd lines.

The contrast between her performance and the serious atmosphere in the room was daunting.

Seymor Essing and Aydery Hines watched silently, and they didn’t smile even once. Amolina steeled herself and worked on all the same, until she was done and Essing thanked her solemnly and asked her to go on to the second monologue, the dramatic one.

Had the two very serious spectators liked the monologue or not? Impossible to say!

The Audition (Work Thread #2 Summer 513 AV)

It was time for The Angry Sister’s Monologue from The Mercenary. Essing and Hines were familiar with that one too. “Carry on miss Moletta! “

Switching from comedy to drama in a few chimes wasn’t easy. But Amolina had done this many times before. She had done so many auditions….most of them without getting a role. It was that way for all actors.

She stepped out of one roles and into another, switched personality from witty adventuress to righteously enraged sister, started at the monologue and was soon carried away. This monologue was one of the best angry rants in the world, she thought.

It was the kind of monologue that no sane person would like to hear.

When she was done with it she felt spent.

But the audition wasn’t over yet ! It was time for the poem. She had a long poem to the honour of Rhysol to recite…it went on and on and on and on, until Seymor Essing said that it was enough for now. “No matter how lovely it would be to hear it all to the end, it will need to wait to another time. The audition must go on. Perform the song and dance now please.”

The Audition (Work Thread #2 Summer 513 AV)

Postby Amolina on August 24th, 2013, 4:55 pm

Director Essing and the Costume Specialist Hines watched seriously while Amolina sang the ravokian lullaby.

The song is trembling, wavering
like deep water in the wind
now sleep my dear and smile in dreams
- now rest my rosebud

The song is waving tenderly
it’s deep and calm and safe
and when you smile in dreams and tales
- the silence blows it out

It is like the song of grass and trees
like water sounds in summer’s lake
and like a wave on grass and soil
- it will lay down to die

One day it will be strong and clear
and happy as the sky
it will be a playful, drunken song
- then silent once again

It will be happy as the sky
sweet like roses, red as love
and you will drink it deep and long
- the dark vine of your fate

But when you’re still and stiff and calm
and carried off by men in black
to rest forever in the lake
- the silence starts again

Perhaps she ought to have chosen another song ? It could be very hard to please people. Some liked this and others liked that, and everybody felt sure their own taste and their own way of thinking was the right thing. The only right thing, even. Right for me, my way, to my taste, is right – that seemed to be the way people always were thinking. Few seemed to take interest in what was right for others. But as an actress it could be important to understand what was right for others, and give them that, or else they would be disappointed.

But there’s a limit to how compliant you can be, she knew. Beyond that limit things can get really bad. If you cross it and become nothing else than what others are able to come up with and want to allow you to be, this can be the end of your creativity and career.

Her competitor the voluptous blonde had been singing something definitely much more cheerful and lively. But for better or for worse, Amolina had chosen a song she liked, and it had felt like the only song she wanted to sing.

It was time to dance.

The Audition (Work Thread #2 Summer 513 AV)

Postby Amolina on August 24th, 2013, 4:56 pm

How to dance at an audition, when you don’t have any dance education at all and only know the very undemanding “dance” of the taverns … Amolina would really have liked to know how to do this. Her competitor, the blond had known it…she had carried out a quite complicated dance with lots of advanced steps and it had looked very professional and good.

During the days of preparation Amolina had come to realize that the best for her might be to invent a brand new…way of moving around on a floor, and call it dance. She didn’t know how to do well known kinds of dance the right way, but if she did dance people had not seen before, then it would be hard for them to tell if she was doing it right or wrong.

For this kind of dance she had her actress training to lean on. Or so she hoped. She moved around slowly inside the half circle of lanterns. Very slowly, extremely slowly even. It was perhaps not what was normally called dance, but it was…movement.

The cheap silk of her dress rustled,

Standing on her toetips she stretched one hand dramatically up towards the ceiling of the warehouse. Bending down she touched the floor. Extremely slowly like she was moving throught water instead of air she turned around, then she stood completely still for a chime, before she shook her head, slowly stretching her arms out to the sides, then upwards …

When this dance performace came to it’s end, Amolina was sitting on the floor. She sat there for a few chimes. This time the two spectators actually looked a bit…surprised. But they didn’t say anything. As usual nothing was decided at once. They were going to think and discuss and come back to her in case they wanted to offer her the role. Amolina donned her cloak again and left the building. The blonde competitor seemed to have left during the end of Amolina’s performance. She didn’t know if there were more competitors. Perhaps.

All she could do now was wait.
