Slacking off (Azira)

Syveris rubbed her arm, trying to get rid of the pain. She had been on a fight the day before, and her arm, the part of her body that had been punched the most, still hurt a lot.

It had started when a Yasi boy (whose name she didn't remember, but would be sure to check sometime), slighter shorter than her, made fun of her for playing alone. It wasn't like she actually enjoyed it, but if the alternative was playing with Yasi like him, she was glad to be by herself. Of course, the boy had kept annoying her, and after a short while she snapped. So, like she did many times, she punched him.

However, the boy was stronger than he looked, and he easily fought back. It had hurt every time he punched her, but she wasn't one of giving up. It finally got the attention of the Chiet in charge of them, and, at first, the woman had been concerned about her. When she found out that Syveris hadn't really broke anything, she had been furious. At the boy, mostly. She had thought it was his fault the fight had started, and Syveris didn't bother correcting her. The boy had tried to defend himself, but since he had a reputation of getting into fights and Syveris had got much more hurt than him, the Chiet didn't believe him. Besides, the woman was probably new, otherwise she would've known that Syveris' reputation wasn't much better than the boy's.

That didn't mean she wasn't mad at Syveris too. She had gone on and on about how fighting wasn't allowed, and that she was too young to fight and many more things Syveris hadn't bother with. As a punishment, she would do an extra bendi on the next morning. That was what annoyed the Yasi the most. She had been assigned to the Kitchens, and she had hated it. It wasn't like she hated the people who cooked. Actually, she was grateful to all of them. She just hated the Kitchens. That was all.

So she was there now, in front of the Kitchens' doors. Her whole body was sore, and there were purple marks on her belly and arms, but most of the scratches were all right, except for a tiny one on her lip. That was still hurting a lot.

Syveris looked inside the Kitchens, wondering if she should go in. Well, she should, but that didn't mean she would. Snickering, and then scowling because of the pain on her lip, she backed away from the Kitchens. Maybe she would be punished, if she was found out, but that was unlikely. The Chiet had more important things to do than follow her steps, and it wasn't like she would stay in a place where everyone could see her.

Besides, she really didn't want to work on the Kitchens. It wasn't exciting, it was't really challenging, and she couldn't really cook, anyway. So she simply decided she wouldn't do bendi in the Kitchens. It wasn't like she was going to be of any help, and she sure wasn't going to work there when she grew up.

Shrugging, she laid on a wall, near the Kitchen but far enough so she couldn't be seen from there. She was glad that she wound't have to spend a whole day doing some annoying bendi. Syveris closed her eyes, wondering what she should do until it was time to go back.

Bendi in the kitchens. Definitely not Azira's favourite place to be but there were worse tasks the Yasi could have been set. At least she could make herself useful, she wouldn't get in the way or make any mistakes. She could have ended up helping the glassworkers and that would be bad, considering the panic attack that she'd had the last time. But the kitchens she could do. It wasn't something she wanted to work at later in life but at least she could cook passably well, a skill that might just come in handy later for something. So although the Yasi wasn't looking forward to the assignment, she made sure that she made it there at a reasonable time which, in her mind, meant early.

As she was nearing the kitchens however, she spotted another girl, maybe a little older than her who seemed to be loitering outside. Frowning, Azira wondered why the Yasi wasn't doing her bendi. Then she saw the girl's face. She'd seen her before but where? She found herself slowing and then stopping altogether at she tried to remember where she might have seen her. A memory of the fight the previous night sprang to mind and she realised that this was the girl that Flin had beaten up last night. She certainly had all the hallmarks of a beating: bruises, cuts and scratches.

Fighting was frowned upon in the Yasi quarter (which was funny considering the fights the older Inarta got involved in) so it was punished. It wasn't usually a severe punishment, just an extra bendi, but it was usually a good deterrent of future fights. Scrunching her forehead up, the Yasi recalled that when she and the others had gathered round to watch the scolding, Flin had been assigned to the Gardens and this girl (Sy-something) had been sent to work in the kitchens. The girl wouldn't relish the company but there was something about the other girl's stance, her nonchalance, that seemed to suggest she was slacking off.

"Hey!" the youngster called out, moving closer to her. "Why are you out here? Aren't you supposed to be doing your bendi in the kitchens?" She knew how bossy she must sound but she couldn't tolerate laziness. Everyone worked their butts off in the various castes so that they could eat including the Yasi so she wouldn't put up with someone getting a free meal.

"Do you have something to say for yourself before I go and report you?"

Slacking off (Azira)

Syveris was still trying to figure out what to do when she heard a voice calling out. She actually jumped, surprised by the sudden appearance of another Inarta. Slowly, the Yasi turned her head, looking straight at the one who had called her. It was also a Yasi, a girl, someone she had seen the day before looking at her while she was getting scolded by the Chiet. When the girl kept talking, Syveris buffed, rolling her eyes at the other.

"I'm thinking about what should I do." she answered the girl's question, with her voice as pleasant as it could be. "I'm sure I won't be of any help in the Kitchens. Besides" Syveris made an effort to smile and not to scowl afterwards, even though her lip hurt. "what I do or don't is none of your business." She finished, hoping the girl would just leave, but Syveris supposed she was way too self-righteous to let it go.

"What do I have to say for myself?" there was a hint of anger in her voice this time, Syveris barely controlling herself anymore. She just wanted to be left alone. What would it matter if she went to do her bendi and would only get in the way of people doing her job? "Why should I say something? What would you gain from reporting me? A pat in the head? And why do you think I would let you just walk away to report me without doing anything?" the words kept coming out. Syveris wasn't even sure what she was talking about anymore. She just kept talking, hoping the girl would leave her alone. Even though she had just gotten out of a fight, here she was starting another one. But the Yasi was angry, annoyed and tired. She just wanted to be left alone, and she hated people who told her what to do. Walking a few steps away from the wall, she turned to the girl, arms crossed.

It wasn't as if she really wanted to pick up a fight, although she knew that, after her words, the other girl would probably want to fight. Her whole body still hurt, but she was confident she could take the smaller girl. After all, the Yasi wasn't just going to watch the other go away to report on her. Besides, she didn't even knew the girl. Syveris couldn't understand why she cared, and more, how she dared to try and boss someone she didn't even know.

"Don't threaten me," the girl replied quietly, a steely edge to her tone. She regarded her fellow Yasi with an expression warring between wariness and disapproval. She didn't know why the other girl was getting all defensive and aggressive. Azira was in the right here and she was in the wrong. But then the girl was probably naturally aggressive, hence why she'd gotten in a fight the previous evening. Perhaps she was easily provoked. The smaller girl hoped that she wouldn't hit her. She could defend herself and was at an advantage too; she wasn't all battered and bruised. She stood her ground.

"I'm doing the right thing and if you're going to be like that then I'm going to tell on you for sure," the little redhead told her, her gaze condescending. "Don't think you'll stop me either if I go. I can look after myself," she warned, eyeing the girl warily. It wasn't likely that the girl would change her mind but it was worth a try to offer her a chance to redeem herself.

"Why don't you just report for your bendi? Just go into the kitchen and then I won't have to tell on you and you won't have to get in trouble. If you won't do it then it's your own fault. We do bendi for a reason you know. And if you won't contribute then you deserve punishment, don't you? What good is a lazy Inarta? You'll end up a Dek without any real life and then you'll probably end up dying while working. Nobody would care either. Do you want that or are you going to work like you're supposed to?"

Slacking off (Azira)

Postby Syveris on October 3rd, 2013, 10:20 pm

For a moment, she thought about going inside the Kitchens. She was surprised with the other's reaction. It was rare for someone to be that patient with her, and even rarer for her to be offered a second change if she had done something wrong. Besides, maybe the bendi wouldn't be so unbearable. Maybe she could do it this time.

However, when the other Yasi said she was going to end up a Dek, her anger returned, a hundred times stronger than before. She didn't mind being scolded, she didn't mind that the other told her she deserved to be punished. But the girl had no right to tell her that. Syveris closed her eyes, not able to control the anger that shot through her body, nor wanting to control it. She felt herself tremble, her mind going blank with hate as she allowed anger to take control of her being.

She ran towards the other girl, her footsteps hard on the stone floor. Syveris punched the Yasi in her face with all her strength. It hurt her already sore hand, but she barely felt it. All she wanted was to cause pain, to hurt the girl who had no right to judge her.

"Shut up." she whispered, all the anger and hate she was feeling evident in her voice. "Shut up. Who do you think you are? How dare you tell me that? You don't know anything about me. Anything." she was spitting the words, her eyes fixed on the girl. Her voice trembled with emotion, and, on that moment, she didn't care for nothing else than punish the girl for what she had said.

The young Yasi watched as the other girl began to tremble. For some reason she thought that the girl was going to cry. Maybe it was the shaking or the way she scrunched her eyes shut as if to hold back tears. She certainly didn't expect the girl's fist to come flying out of nowhere. There was absolutely no warning, no chance to defend herself. All she could do was try to pull away but even that didn't save her from her head being whipped backwards and the explosion of pain. The blow didn't break her nose but blood began to leak from her nostrils as a result of the impact, tears springing to her eyes.

"Why would you do that?" she gasped, gingerly cupping her leaking nose. Her face hurt and it wasn't fair! She'd only been telling her what she ought to be doing an the consequences of her current actions but that was no reason to hit her. Tears threatening, Azira closed her eyes tightly shut to try to hold back the flood that seemed imminent.

"I was only telling you how wrong it was to be doing what you were doing. You didn't have to hit me, you little...little shyke!" she whined, her voice struggling around the lump forming in her throat. The swear was unfamiliar for her young tongue but it fit how she was feeling about the older girl. Why did she have to be so mean? The Yasi turned and fled for the kitchens, all the determination gone out of her, no longer wanting to set the girl straight.

When she pushed through into the hot and steamy room, a Chiet woman turned to her, a look of impatience on her face which quickly turned to horror when she saw the scarlet liquid all over the girl's hands and face. The woman hurried over questioning her about what had happened as she hovered above her trying to assess the damage. The Yasi kept her mouth tight shut, not willing to say one word.

Slacking off (Azira)

Postby Syveris on October 4th, 2013, 3:59 pm

Syveris watched as the girl's nose bled. The sigh of blood making her almost sick. She hadn't meant to hit the other so strong. No, that was a lie. She had meant it, really meant it. But as the other struggled not to cry, the Yasi felt herself calm down and start to regret what she had done. The girl had been annoying and a real pain, but even so, to actually make her bleed... Syveris stepped away from the other Yasi, watching as she cupped her nose.

When the other spoke, it was to insult her. Shyke. It was almost silly after the girl had told her she would become a Dek. Silly enough to make her laugh out loud. But she didn't. She didn't because the blood coming out of the Yasi's nose wasn't funny at all. Syveris had been in a lot of fights, and a lot of times she had bleed. But every time she made others bleed, they would fight back. This girl only stood there, trying not to cry.

When she finally moved, it was to run towards the Kitchens. Not a punch, not a kick. Nothing, despite what the other had said about being able to look after herself. Maybe she wasn't. Maybe she was just scared of Syveris and had said that in hope that the other would give up on fighting. Guilt shot through her body, making her wince. Syveris' kept her eyes glued on the Kitchens entrance, where the girl had gone. She should go and... And what? Apologize? Syveris snorted. As if. She might have punched the other, but it was the Yasi who provoked her. She wouldn't apologize.

Syveris turned around, walking away from the Kitchens and stuffing the event deep in her mind. She would only forget about the girl and about the fight. She could do that. She had been doing that her whole life. Looking behind her shoulders, she hoped the Yasi wouldn't say anything. She would be in real trouble if she did. But that wasn't in her hands anymore. Syveris growled, brushing her feet furiously on the stone floor. She didn't even want to do anything anymore. And she couldn't even go to her bendi, because the other was there.

Shrugging, she just walked away, hoping once more the girl would keep quiet. And, in the back of her head, she also hoped the girl would be alright, although she pushed this thought away.

The Yasi stood quietly as the woman examined her, checking to see if anything was broken and trying to stop the bleeding. It wasn't an enjoyable experience having the Chiet cook pinch her sore nose. To make matters worse, the woman began to interrogate her about what had happened.

"How did you manage this? Did you have an accident? Were you in a fight? You know that fighting isn't allowed, don't you? It wouldn't be like you at all, Azira. You're usually such a good girl. Well go on, explain yourself," the woman nattered away, not giving the girl a chance to answer until she'd finished talking. It was difficult for the girl to keep track of everything that had been said so that she could form some sort of answer. A glance told her that the other Yasi hadn't followed her in, and probably wouldn't, so she could probably get away with a lie.

"I was a little later than normal leaving so I was running through the Inner Warrens and I ran into a big man's elbow. It hit me right in the face but it was my own fault," the Yasi sniffled. She'd had to mention that someone had hit her because the woman wouldn't have believed that she'd fallen, especially not if her face bruised. As it was, the woman humphed, clearly showing what she thought of that story but she didn't comment any further, only pointing her over to her workstation. A mound of vegetables sat waiting to be peeled.

Azira washed her hands and set to work, trying to push the incident with the older girl from her mind. She wouldn't be telling anyone off for awhile, considering the consequences.
