This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Lilou beamed at the compliment, something she rarely, if ever obtained. And from a Dynasty at that! It made her very very happy... making this day even better than it already was. That music... figuring out how to sing... and now a compliment! Everything kept getting better and better.

She was about to ask about Mistress Opal's own singing, when she felt something... scaley... at her heels. She squeaked, but managed to clap her hands over her mouth in time to stop a scream. She glanced behind her and saw that crocodile thing nudging her legs from the back. As if it... wanted something. In an attempt to get away from the reptile, she took a few steps forward, but stopped when she nearly ran into the Drear. There she hesitated, not wanting to get in the way of the important woman, but also wanting to run away from the crocodile. She whimpered, wanting the indecision to end. Her day was moving up and down with good and bad.

When the creature nudged her legs again, having closed the space, she paused, realizing... it wasn't actually biting! It was a friend of the Mistress, so... maybe it was nice? The slave leaned down and carefully patted the thing on its head, hand tensed. She didn't want it to bite now, not when she was petting it... Glancing up at the Dynasty, she asked "Is it friendly?"

After a few more moments of marvelling at the crocodile's rough skin, she backed up a few steps, carefully avoiding stepping on the animal. Then she remembered her question from before, about singing. "Do you sing, Mistress? You must, and you must be amazing at it!" It wasn't a question. There was the obvious assumption that any Dynasty would obviously be better at everything than her... and since Mistress Opal was the 'music lady' in her mind, the woman must be a master!

Opal backed up, nose crinkling in disgust as the muddy child scrambled away from Remi - and towards her. Though she was no slave to fashion, the thought of her lovely clothes coming into contact with the mud-soaked field hand was distressing, to say the least. But the girl overcame her initial fear and, after a blindingly stupid question - is it friendly? - even managed to pluck up the courage to pet the caiman.

"If he," Opal put emphasis on the descriptive, "weren't 'friendly', he'd have already bitten you." Though the words themselves were not kind neither were they unkind, and the musician did not intend them to be harsh, only a statement of fact. Though she wasn't thrilled that Remi was taking so well to the small slave, Opal understood her friend's fascination with all things musical. Although, she dearly hoped that hearing Lolly sing wouldn't result in Remi's skulking about the slave's quarters all the time. Still, little harm could come of it...

A query from the slave interrupted her musings and quickly chased away any charitable feelings that may have been lingering. Drawing herself up to her full height, Opal narrowed her eyes at the girl. "I do not sing." No explanation, no elaboration. There was no need.

But Opal's mind was swirling; Rhaus had not chosen to grant her with the best of voices, a fact she had reluctantly acknowledged years ago. She still practiced, and liked to think that she was improving, but Opal could not claim to be a singer. It was a source of continuing frustration for her; she'd have preferred to worship Rhaus with song, daily, as other bards were wont. Her lack of ability inspired feelings of inadequacy, and spurred her on to other instruments.

With a glance down at Remi, decidedly less tolerant than before, Opal spun on her heels and strode away from the slave's sector - and away from the little slave who had already managed to upstage her without even trying.

The end.

OoCDraer family is giving permission for Lilou to learn a new skill: singing.
