A smile of gratitude spread across Etori’s face as Spirit Frostfawn sent her off with her new puppy whom she had just purchased from the kind Frostfawn. The little pup seemed so calm and peaceful when Etori carried it away from The Menagerie, away from its sibling and the vantha it was most familiar with. Away from its home. Etori had held it gently in her arms and stroked it as she admired her new little friend. The puppy didn’t move a muscle the entire walk back to the Whitevine hold. Etori wondered what was going through its mind. She pondered if the little pup was just as excited and nervous as she was to have a new companion. Or…if the pup wasn’t happy about the arrangement and wanted to go back. After all, it had no say in the matter. Etori had bought the little creature. Making it her own. After this train of thought, another train left the station of Etori’s mind. She feared that the puppy may not like its new home. What if the puppy were to reject her just like her people did? What if the puppy was no different to the vantha who looked down on her? She had not thought of this possibility when she was eager to purchase the pup.
Again the big responsibility of caring for such a creature lingered on her mind. There was the grooming, food, time and attention she had to give it. Etori had never cared for an animal before. Never had she had one in her care. All she had wanted was a companion to keep her company. Etori tried to reassure herself that taking care of beings was her purpose in the world. Surely she could handle a little puppy. Or so she hoped.
By the time Etori reached her hold the puppy had fallen asleep in her arms. It took a lot out of Etori to sneak up the creaky stairs without awakening the pup or attracting the unwanted attention of vantha in the Whitevine Hold. She wasn’t sure how they’d react to her bringing a puppy into the hold, after all this was no Frostfawn Hold. After making it up the stairs she quietly made her way down the hall of the second floor until she came across the door that lead to her personal room. Etori opened her room door, walked into the space and quietly closed said door behind her.
Thankfully the little pup was still deep in sleep. Etori sighed in relief, she was afraid she’d wake it up and frighten it. Etori walked over to the spare bed on the left side of the room and gently placed the sleeping canine on it. The furry creature looked peaceful as it slept. Etori couldn’t help but smile down at it as a whistling sound came from its wet little nose.
Etori thought that the pup would be hungry once it woke up. She left the room and raced down to the main kitchen of the hold and took two small bowls from the cupboard and some soft meat from the fridge before returning to her room leaving the door ajar behind her. Amazed she made it without being seen. She placed the items on the table for now and went over by the puppy to admire its sleeping form.
A sudden urge to reach out and pet the pup washed over her. She placed her hand on the puppy’s side and stroked it softly, the puppy jumped at the touch and was awakened. In fright the pup bit Etori’s hand hard causing the vantha to draw back her hand. The suddenness of the attack took her by surprise more than the attack itself. Etori looked down at her hand to see that there was a few small gashes in the shape of teeth on her skin. Some blood trickled down from the wound. Etori turned her attention to the puppy to see that it was now standing on the bed in a guarded position, its teeth were bared and a growl was beginning to erupt from its throat.
Etori could see that the puppy felt threatened by her. She had to reassure it that it was safe. She had to let it know it had a new home now, with her. She wasn’t sure how to approach it. Etori went to reach out for the puppy once again with her wounded hand. The puppy barked viciously which let Etori know that it was a bad idea…What else could she do to reassure the canine? Maybe it was hungry? Etori turned her back on the puppy for a moment while she went over to the table where she had placed the meat. In that moment the grey puppy jumped off of the bed and ran for the door. By the time Etori took notice the puppy was out the door and heading towards the hold exit.
Panic filled Etori’s chest. She had to chase after the puppy, it was her responsibility now. She couldn’t let it get lost or let anything happen to the poor little creature. Without a second thought Etori ran after the puppy.
“I won’t lose another!” She said aloud to herself as she raced down the stairs and out the open doors of the Whitevine Hold hoping she was hot on the pup’s tail. |

The ever present chill in the air stung Etori’s lungs and pressed cold against her face as she raced down the snowy streets of Avanthal. She could see the grey little puppy running before her in the distance. She was too far behind and was beginning to lose momentum. At this rate she would lose all sight of the pup if she couldn’t pick up her pace. The vantha tried to push herself to her limits, the cool wind was beginning to make her eyes water which caused her vision to blur. Out of nowhere Etori tripped on a branch hidden in the thick snow that lay beneath her feet which caused her to fall to the ground and scrap her hands and forearms as she attempted to soften her fall. She quickly looked up to see the puppy vanish from her site as she watched it run far beyond her reach. She had lost it by now. The pup could be on its way to no man’s land for all she knew. She was terrible at this…Just terrible. “How could I let this happen?” she whispered to herself as the pain from the fall sank into her mind. Feeling weak she lay her head on the snow for a moment to catch her breath and attempted to remember why she had signed herself up for this. She just wasn’t cut out for animals she guessed, maybe the animal kingdom just disliked her with a passion. The chill of the cold snow against her face brought her to her senses and she picked herself up. She wouldn’t let herself give in so easily. She had to search for the puppy and make sure it was safe.
The snowfall was mild that day but enough to send a chill down any vantha’s spine. Etori Whitevine had been frantically running around in circles searching for her lost puppy. She asked any vantha she laid eyes on if they had seen any traces of the pup, she searched every location she could think of, and she even began to pray to Morwen for the pup’s safety as she continued her search alone. All the while she battled against the negative thoughts in her head that began to pile up and tried her best to ignore the pain from the wounds she had received, there was always time to patch herself up later. Finding the puppy was her first priority. Hours had pasted but still, there was no sign of the little grey puppy.
Etori had lost track of where she had been and where she had not been. She began to wonder aimlessly and was growing tired from racing around the icy city. But she could not give in. She dragged her feet and continued to search for the pup. She looked around her scanning the area she was currently in for the lost pup. It looked to be a wide snow path that lead to the Frostfawn hold. The edges of the path were steep and tall trees grew from the sides. The sound of soft whimpering caught her ear. Etori’s heart skipped a beat, it sounded close by. There was no time to waste. She had to find the pup. It was in pain and possible danger. Without a second thought she raced over to the side of the path and looked down its steep edge. Hoping to find any trace of the small pup. All she saw was the body of tall trees. “Maybe I am beginning to hear things…” She thought to herself. Disappointed she went to turn away when the whimper filled her ears yet again and she saw something move from the corner of her eye. Etori narrowed her eyes in concern at a small pile of snow that seemed to move all on its own. Suddenly a little head stuck out of the pile and Etori saw the little face of the puppy she had been so desperately searching for. The sight caused Joy and terror to flutter in her chest all at once. She was glad to see the pup but worried about its condition. Etori slid down the small steep slope and managed to land on her feet. The pup having noticed her presence begin to bark rather excitedly. Etori trudged through the blanket of snow that lay under her feet as fast as she could managed until she had approached the puppy. Having reached the canine it became silent. From the look of the snow that had piled up on top of its fur it had been here for a while, an hour or so during the snowfall, maybe. Etori kneeled down by its side and brushed the snow from its being. As her hand ran along its right back leg the pup let out a whimper and bit Etori’s hand in response to the touch. The vantha withdrew her hand from the pups jaw immediately, she didn’t bother to inspect the damage caused to her hand. Instead she inspected the pup’s leg, noticing some blood and a gash. There could be a possible fracture. She also noticed that the puppy was shaking from the cold. She had to get it away from the chilly snow and inside so she could treat the poor thing.
Etori removed her cloak from her shoulders and placed it on top of the pup. She proceeded to lift the pup into her arms while gently wrapping it in the cloak whilst she stood back up onto her feet. The puppy didn’t seem to like this sudden movement, it yelped rather loudly and bit deep into Etori’s right arm that held it close to her. Etori winced at the pain. But made no action to stop the pup from biting her. She just let it go. She knew she shouldn’t have moved it if it did have a fractured leg, but she had no choice. She had to take it home, where she could treat it properly and keep it warm. In that moment she became determined to get the puppy home as soon as possible. She held the puppy gently in her arms as it bit into her flesh. Etori began to make her way up the steep slope and back onto the wide path where she would continue walking with the injured pup in her arms until it was home safely.
“I’m taking you home, whether you like it or not.” She said rather calmly to the angsty injured pup. |

Etori managed to carry the puppy the entire way home. Night had fallen by this time and the pup had fallen asleep half way during the walk which resulted in it releasing its bite on Etori. Once she had entered her room and made sure she closed the door behind her this time, she placed the pup gently on the spare bed yet again. It looked peaceful and she didn’t want to disturb it but she had to so she could treat its wounds. Slowly she removed the cloak from the pup so she could inspect its leg again. It didn’t look quite as bad as she had first thought. It could just be a scrap and a sprain. But there still might be a possible fracture so she had to treat it as such. She went to touch the wound when the puppy’s eyes flew open.
Etori quickly closed her eyes and prepared herself to be bitten. But felt a wet tongue press against the wound on her arm instead. To her surprise she opened the eyes to see the puppy licking her as if it were trying heal her wounds itself. Etori couldn’t help but let out an erupt chuckle that gave the pup a fright and caused it to pull away from her. It now stared up at her curiously with a slight tilt of its head. Which just received another chuckle from the vantha. The pup let out a single high pitched bark at her then turned to its own wound and began to lick it. Guilt filled Etori, it was no time to laugh. She had to treat the puppy’s leg and make sure it wasn’t a fracture, which she hoped. Though she realised animals are very different to people and she hadn’t given one medical treatment before. There was a first time for everything she assumed. She could take it to see a veterinary but she didn’t trust strangers easily. Besides she had to give it a try herself.
Etori turned to her table and took the medium wooden box that held her medical supplies. The box had been a childhood possession of hers, her father had carved it for her to keep her belongings in for her 6th birthday. It was old and simple but it did the job. She grasped one of the two chairs that sat at the table and dragged it over to sit beside the spare bed where she then sat on it. She placed the wooden box on the bed a little to the right of the pup. Etori took a pair of large tweezers from the box, placed a cotton ball between the tweezers and poured a little disinfectant onto the cotton ball. The canine looked up at her then, Etori took a deep breath as she feared the pup would bite her again and began to gently dab the cotton ball on the gash so she could clean the blood away and protect it of germs. The puppy whimpered but let her do the job, as if it understood that she was only trying to help. Seeing that the puppy had trusted her she continued by having put a little healing cream on the wound and sprained area. Then she took a pad, placed it over the gash and finally took a small bandage and tied it around the pad to keep it in place. She took another bandage and wrapped it around the remainder of the leg. The whole time the puppy winced and whimpered but it didn’t resist or bite her. Etori was surprised, she didn’t think the puppy would let her treat her wounds so easily. The stinging of her own wounds caught her attention and she thought she had better treat them before going to bed.
Etori took the time to treat her own wounds, the pup had watched her do so. It had become curious of Etori. Once Etori had finished she looked down at the bandage she had wrapped around her own right arm and hand. The bites hadn’t been too painful but it was better to be safe than sorry and Etori liked the practise. Feeling accomplished she picked herself up from the chair, took her medical box from the bed and placed it back on the table. The sight of the soft meat she had left there earlier caught her attention and she thought she had better feed the pup some before she decided to go off to bed. Etori took the plate of meat into her hands and sat in the chair beside the puppy again. The puppy barked excitedly at the sight of the food. The vantha fed the pup piece by pieces until there was none left, she was glad to see it had an appetite. Etori put the empty plate aside and gazed at the puppy who was contently staring up at her. Without realising it she reach her arm out to pet the pup, her hand gently pet its back, its fur was very soft and she felt now that the pup had warmed up. All of a sudden the puppy moved its head towards her hand, again Etori prepared for a bite but the pup merely gave her hand a sniff followed by a lick. Etori smiled down at the puppy, a little happiness fluttered in her chest. How could such a little creature bring happiness into her heart, how was it able to heal her pain and loneliness so effortlessly? Then it occurred to her. She had not given the little pup a name yet. She thought for a moment. It didn’t take long for a name to spring to mind.
“Sana…I think that name suits you.” She half smiled down at her little companion. Sana meaning “Heal” in Latin. A perfect name for the puppy who would slowly heal her life. Sana just stared up at her with her large brown eyes. The day had taken its toll and Etori suddenly felt how exhausted it had left her. She decided it was time to sleep. She would have more time to bond with the puppy tomorrow. She was just glad she was able to find the poor little thing and bring her home safely.
“Sleep now, Sana.” Said Etori as she walked over and climbed into her own bed. It had been a long day and it didn’t take long for her to drift off into sleep. |
