29th of fall, 513 a.v

It was a cool day, washed in enough of the northern wind to dispel the heat that Syna had dealt so cruelly the season before. Despite the hardships of the summer, Endrykas was bustling; the season of harvest was nearing its peak, and the city was alive with trade and the exchanging of money as pavilions bought and stored fall’s bounty for the coming winter, though the cold season was still distant enough that transactions would not have the urgency that the would later. Early autumn was a time of ease and plenty, one of the few ever afforded in the Sea of Grass. And even in the calm lull, people buzzed; whispers of the oncoming hunt drifted from every corner, every conversation, of how their hunters were still the most able in Mizahar. After too much pain, the hunt appeared as a soothing balm; this was a time to celebrate, even in the wake of s much to mourn.

High noon found Shahar in the Ruby Clan, nearing the center where the tents were thickest. The crowds pressed at him from all sides, even though none touched him, and his face was a mask of unease. And yet they did not choke him, as they so often did, not today. For today he had something to accompany him, something to focus on. Something to protect.

He’d bought Namal clothes the day before and insisted without words that they be word; though he himself did not have a real concept of decency, Shahar knew full well that the rest of his people did. He didn’t want to risk offending those that he would seek help from.

Still, the hunter kept him close. Half of his attention was focused on his path, while the other half remained focused on Namal; he was constantly shifting his posture, orienting and reorienting his position in relation to the boy’s so as to shield him from the jostle of the crowd. The threat of claustrophobia was different now; it was no longer directed at him, it was directed at Namal, and the desire to defend Namal trumped the near physical pain that would so often come with ventures into the city.

It was with no small amount of relief that Shahar spotted the Whet Stone, nestled far too closely between two large pavilions bathed in red. The sound of metal striking metal sounded rhythmically from within, and the front was open in invitation. Shahar put a gentle hand on Namal’s shoulder and steered him in that direction.

Inside the front of the pavilion were rows upon rows of folding tables, each bending under the weight of metal weapons glimmering hopefully for any buyers. Shahar passed over them, sparing the briefest glance towards the table of axes, but they held no interest for him. The keeper approaching, however, did.

Hello, he signed. “How are you today?”

I need help, Shahar signed bluntly, wasting no time on formalities. He gestured to the boy at his side, and at the collar on his neck in particular. This, he said, I want it off.

Gilded Collar (Kemlo)

From the moment they spotted Endrykas in the distance Animal had been curious and excited about the city. One look had been enough to show him it had nothing to do with the gypsies that held him captive for so long. He was with Shahar and by now he trusted the man far enough to go there with him. And he was curious about all these people too.
As they entered the city the boy snorted with displeasure as he caught the first fumes that seemed to be inevitable if so many humans came together at one place. The smells insulted his keen nose and he wasn't happy about it.

Getting Animal into those clothes had been a real fight for Shahar because the boy really didn't want to wear them. Getting some shirt or tunic over Animal's head would have been impossible with the long spikes on the outsides of his collar. It ended with a pair of loose soft knee long trousers and a small vest of soft buckskin leather that left the middle of his chest and left his midriff open but still it was beyond uncomfortable to the boy. There could be little doubt the boy just detested wearing clothing at all. To him it was another form of bondage to keep him from changing into his tiger form and only added to his misery.
Unable to tell Shahar this and close to making the man really angry the boy finally gave in but with nearly every step he tugged at the strange irritating clothes. Even looking around at all the people and strange new sights the boy tugged on it which caused people to stare at them if they saw it.

Sometimes Animal made growling or hissing sounds if the crowd got too thick. He had been used to crowds glaring at him or shouting comments but back then there always had been bars between him and them. Animal wasn't really frightened but sometimes he got a bit uneasy.
On the other side all the new curious sight he saw for the first time in his short life caught the boy's attention. It was a good thing Shahar kept such a close watch on Animal because otherwise he would have been lost more than a dozen times by going towards another of all the unusual sights. Not even his uneasyness about the crowds or his hate of the cloths he wore was able to stop this childish curiosity.

Coming close to the shop the boy's instincts caused him to stop. The loud sounds and the smells coming from that place overpowered even his curiosity, at least far a moment. Shahar needed to nudge him forward but as soon as they entered the boy's eyes grew wide again as he looked at all the tables. Unused to human customs the boy was about to grab one of the weapons as Shahar talking to one of the men caught his attention.

Without understanding the words Animal realized from Shahar's actions what the two talked about. It was impossible to make the collar any closer without hurting him. Knowing Shahar as he did this never was an option for the boy so that left the collar being removed.
Animal hated this collar at first with a vengeance but over time and with fighting other dangerous beasts he learned about the protection the collar provided too. It needed no second thought for the boy to decide he wanted to keep the collar. That device locking it in it's narrow position had to go but the collar was to stay. But how was he going to point that out to Shahar?

"Stop!" he said in Common to get their attention. Grabbing the collar he shook his head from side to side to show them 'no'. Then he showed them the locking device that kept the collar from opening to it's full width and nodded his head up and down to tell them to remove this device on the collar. "Speak Common?" he asked the shop keeper with a hopeful look.
