Spring 12, 514 AV

Gwin hadn’t wanted to come to that place. Yet here she was, nestled into a corner far away from the fireplace and other patrons, scribbling away with black charcoal on her parchment. As an Akvatari, she longed for the blue sky above her head and endless horizons to both sides, maybe even gentle waves beneath her tail.

A fellow student had recommended it to her. The boy had seen her work several times around campus, the last time with her parchment rustling in the fresh spring breeze. He’d suggested she relocate to the Quill’s Rest for it’d provide shelter from the wind, a quiet atmosphere suited for studying and cheap drink. That day she’d decided to follow the suggestion. After some time, a pot of steaming tea and a mug had appeared next to her. A sniff proved it smelled curiously of the sea and… food. It was still too hot to drink though, so she returned to her parchment.

Every location had a melody, an underlying tone and rhythm that surfaced when one listened to its sounds and voices for a long enough time. Whenever she sat down to compose, Gwin tried to grasp that before writing down anything. After determining the rhythm, the next thing she did was discovering the basic melody. Only then did charcoal meet parchment and the process of writing lines and dots begin.

After that, it literally flowed out of her fingertips. She only had to listen carefully and record what she heard. Most times her fingers couldn’t even keep up with the steady trickle of music in her ears. Yet she had to chase after it again and again. There was no purer form of expressing emotion than music and no better way of sharing it with others than writing sheet music.

While she worked, her wings moved lazily through the air and sometimes her green fin twitched with excitement. Although she heard everything around her, Gwin’s other senses were completely focused on the parchment and the notes in front of her. The tea was cooling down slowly, but surely.

The Quill's Rest. It was supposed to be one of the best spots to study and get a drink, and many students and scholars came here. Turais was simply here to read over his notes from his classes and make sure he knew the material well enough before he had to learn more information. Sometimes it was tiring, having to constantly keep up and reread information to keep it from fading away while learning something new. But that was just how learning was, he had found out. Repetition.

Once he stepped in he was surprised to see the beautiful views from the windows and was not surprised that many people liked to come here for peace and quiet. The sunlight that filtered in through the windows made the Ethaefal smile, glad he was able to find a place that didn't block out the light and close up the windows. As he began walking around with slow even steps he pulled his coat off and slung it over his shoulder, looking for an empty seat. After a while he decided to take a seat at a small table near an Akvatari who looked like she was busily scribbling across some paper.

The Ethaefal took his seat and soon someone came b to ask him if he wanted anything, offering some sort of tea, which he politely declined, not having a need for food or drink during the day. After he settled and pulled a few pages of neatly scribbled notes he began his work of re-reading everything and making sure he knew all the information he had jotted down. After organizing his papers by subject, he glanced over to the woman with the wings and tail to glance at her paper, wondering what she was working on so intently.

Gwin’s eyes were still glued to the parchment and her hand moving across it as fast as she could move lazy muscles. From time to time she stopped in her work to shake the stiffness out of her arm, but then she immediately took it up again. Sometimes her tail curled up with excitement, other times it dangled from side to side with the fin brushing the floor.

After a few chimes she had the basic theme down and hesitated to continue with the piece. Which were the undertones, the less noticed, yet most important undercurrent of the grand melody at the Quill’s Rest? That moment, she looked up to aid her ears with impressions before her eyes. Noticing her kelp tea, she still was too deep in her music to touch it and break the circle of concentration.

However, as the Akvatari noticed a spot of color at a nearby table, her gaze briefly met the Ethaefal’s. There sat a creature almost as strange as her, although quite lovely with the soft colors in his horns and the warm glow of his skin. After a quick glance, her pale eyes immediately returned to the parchment and she started scribbling again. The Ethaefal was another piece in the grand tapestry she was weaving through notes and breaks, sound and silence. Yet his presence had turned the piece around and given it a new kind of depth. Biting her lip, Gwin struggled to put a finger on that new aspect of sweet beauty and melancholy.

Everything that met the eye and ear was transitory, existing in the moment. Gwin hoped for her music to reflect that and capture what happened in the present. She was working hard towards that goal.

He was surprised when she looked up and stared right at him peeking over at her work then just went back to scribbling. He blinked once then moved to get a closer look while maintaining a comfortable distance, in case she did in fact mind him peering at her work. As he moved closer he peered at her paper again, noticing she was not writing notes as he though, or even drawing. He knew that was what music looked like, when written down, but he had no idea how to read it at all, so he just stared, puzzled, as she quickly scribbled more and more little dots and lines with weird little marks over some across the page.

Turais briefly considered asking her what she was doing, but he knew basically what she was doing, and he felt that interrupting her might not be such a good idea. He decided he would wait until she seemed to be finished before speaking. Besides, when he was deep in thought, pouring over notes or transcribing a book he hated people interrupting him.

The quiet movement of her utensil to the paper was all that was heard as the Ethaefal continued to watch the Akvatari write her music. He began contemplating what her music sounded like, what it was about... Was it for a class, or for her personal enjoyment? He had seen one or two of her kind, but he knew nothing of the Akvatari, was this something all Akvatari did, write music? He had so many questions for her, but the more he thought them up the more he felt bad for hovering while she wrote, so slowly he moved back to his table and took up his ink sticks again to lightly look over his notes. Ever so often he would look up to see if the woman was done with her writing.

Gwin noticed the footsteps and instinctively incorporated them into her piece through a subtle rhythm underlying the main melody. It appeared as he came closer, grew larger and louder, but as he left without addressing her, it shrank back into the higher tones and faded slowly. After a few beats she summoned it again as a faint echo of the first appearance. Another few beats had turned it into a steady drumbeat that rose and fell.

The main theme returned, although instead of repeating itself, it became greater, higher and wider. She added small flourishes between the prominent notes and listened as the melody culminated in a final uproar. When it died and its echo faded away, she’d filled three and a half pages with that language understood by all races equally.

As she looked up, no steam was rising from the teapot anymore. Blinking, she poured herself a cup and tasted the lukewarm liquid. It reminded her of the ocean, so she drank it in one gulp and immediately poured another. Then the reflections of light on the surface distracted her and she started it observing it thoughtfully. A low hum escaped her throat. Before she knew it, Gwin was humming the piece she’d just written down. Something in it confused her fine ears though. Too colorful? Perhaps a change in pace?

She wasn’t sure. After writing down a first draft, however, Gwin usually took a small break to let her impressions dry before polishing the piece further. In the meantime, she refilled her cup a third time. Meeting the glance of the Ethaefal, she raised it in a silent toast. To music, the arts and beauty, she thought.

Watching the woman as she composed was an incredible experience. The way she gave herself over to the music as she wrote it amazed him. He had never seen someone so into something in his life. She looked as if she could hear the music as she wrote it, a silent melody just for her ears. Turais was mesmerized as he just watched her again, feeling almost weird as he stared at the Akvatari. His paper was forgotten again as she seemed to come to a close in her composing.

When she raised her eyes and met his gaze he gave an awkward half smile and gave his head a nod, having no drink to toast back with. He took the moment she was no longer focused on her music to shuffle his tings around and move a little closer to try and address her. "Hi, uh, are you humming what you just wrote?" He asked, curiosity burning as he listened to her hum some melody he had never heard before. The last thing he wanted to do was be rude, but after she seemed to meet his gaze he felt almost certain she was open to a little conversation, and he just had to ask her some questions.

The way she wrote the music, weaving it in her head and then transcribing it to paper reminded him of magic in a way. She let it flow through her and out of her finger tips through the quill and onto paper, just like Reimancers let the Djed flow through them and then manifest into their element of choice. In a way he supposed music, art and magic were all very similar.

As she observed the Ethaefal and listened to his words spoken in a soft voice, Gwin realized once again how beautiful he was. His horns specifically drew her gaze, the way their colors bled into each other towards the tips. At the end of the day, the Gods were the most capable artists, she supposed. That thought alone posed a challenge though. Gwin couldn’t help but think that way.

While their eyes met and he spoke, she kept humming to herself. The theme was engraved in her mind now. As she left it, she had to look at the parchment to get the melody right and follow the song. She disliked breaking the rhythm, but his question required an answer. In an establishment such as the Quill’s Rest, the Akvatari adjusted by being polite.

“Yes. It’s just a rough idea, so I’m going over it again.” A short and precise explanation delivered in an almost dry tone. As she resumed her humming, Gwin suddenly realized what was missing. “Words! There’s a melody that rises to its chorus twice, recovers momentum in the interludes and fades out at the end. It needs words sung to it. That’s the part that’s not right.” With that announcement, she scribbled a note into the right corner of the first page. Although she’d started talking, she was still too absorbed into her piece to pay attention to details such as keeping the next monologue to herself. Staring at the notes, she lifted her tea cup blindly and took a sip.

Then she looked up with the realization shining in her pale eyes. That thought she kept to herself for it posed a harsh blow. Gwin didn’t know how to add words to a ballad! The melody was as clear as day. Regarding the actual phrasing, however, her mind drew a blank. It seemed too horrible a realization to say out loud.

The corner of the Ethaefal's lip curled into a half smile. He knew she was not trying to be rude, she could have ignored him. She must just have been absorbed in the song too much to actually want to converse. Turais simply moved around to take a seat at her table, looking down at the notes on parchment. He really had no idea what the music 'said', just what she had been humming. He scanned the paper and wondered exactly how one learned to do this exactly. Were all the notes placements always the same?

It needs words sung to it. That’s the part that’s not right.” Turais watched her as she came to the realization and quickly scribbled a note for herself on the page. That was an interesting idea she proposed. He guessed it made sense, as far as he knew, songs sometimes had words to them. He continued to watch her, remaining quiet, for now, as she stared at the page. It was an interesting idea to create words for a song. He wondered if it was like writing a book, or a journal with your own thoughts. Maybe like a poem? He had read a few of those in the Library. He knew this Akvatari was far more capable than he though, and so he just continued to ponder over his thoughts.

After a while he studied the look on her face and felt a slight change in her aura. Was it worry? Nervousness? It was something, something in that range. He eyed her face and noticed the look in her eyes. Maybe she was blanking on an idea for the words. He felt sympathy for her. There had been days where he totally blanked on things, more often now that he was studying all the time. He lifted a hand and ran a finger along one of his horns again as he thought, watching her curiously.

"What's the song about? What is the theme?" It was like writing a paper, or an essay maybe. Perhaps if he could help her evaluate the theme and the tone of the piece she could come up with an idea for the words and go from there. He figured while his help probably was unsolicited if she didn't want him to help her she could say so and he would go back to reading his notes.

OOCSorry for the delay and the short post. I'll do better next time!

The vibrant gaze of the Ethaefal didn’t help her, but his words shook her out of the momentary shock at least. True, she could focus on what the song meant, its message, and then go from there. Simple. The answer to his question was crystal clear in her mind. Gesturing around the location, including everything in range of sight and hearing, Gwin struggled for words. “It’s all this. I take music from what I hear and put it down. It’s the work and pleasure, the social and lonely aspects, the noise of dishes, footsteps and laughter. A little bit of beauty too.”

The last words were directed at the Ethaefal, the harmony in his colors and form, although she didn’t exactly mean for him to notice. As her gaze focused on him, the problem of the song she was working on faded into the background. She could do nothing about it, not at the moment, anyway.

Instead her pale eyes looked at him as if seeing him for the first time, although her voice sounded tired and carried an undertone of sadness. “What brought you here anyway? I mean… not to this table, but to the Quill’s Rest. I take it you’re a student…?” Suddenly the urge to know more about that particular source of inspiration hit her. He was beautiful, of course, but there was more to people than apparent beauty. Flicking her tail in anticipation, Gwin was ready to converse with the stranger and forget her artistic crisis over their words.
