A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

The Kalinor
Research Facility

To enter the facility one would only need to follow the fine crimson silken ropes attached to the silk path going to the Purging itself, non-Symenestra that are not patients will need to be carried in directly from this path.

Situated next to the Purging for convenience, the Kalinor Research Facility is devoted to solving the mystery of some well known Symenestra problems as well as other ailments that pop up around the city. Discovering the secret to fix the largest problem so far, that of dealing with fatal pregnancies for Symenestra mothers, is the Research Facility's main focus. The facility itself is not a place of healing, it is a place for experimenting, and finding cures from those tests with only a small staff to work on making this happen. Shorthanded, and eager to receive practitioners devoted to the same cause as the original scientists, entrance to the building is surprisingly easy, most are welcome.

The location itself is small, made from the classic stalactites dripping down the cavern's ceiling and its exterior is wrapped in silks of bright blue and green. For every level there is, a new bubble droops down right beside the main largest. The main hall is both the entrance and exit of the Facility, and receives the incoming supplies, test subjects, and staff; one could see many storage holes in the walls specially made to have small doors and locks to hold documentation of previous findings. In the middle of the floor would be a spiral staircase going down to the labs.

The spiral staircase leads to an open aired pathway, but has been modified to have rails to prevent people from falling off. Although it is unnecessary for the graceful Symenestra, the facility is frequented by more than just the spidery-race, turning the staircase into a potential danger for test subjects. The first lab, known as Lab A, is to the right, where the door has been placed into the side of a smaller stalactite branching off of the main building. This lab is for the beginners that wish to further their knowledge on medicine and biology; here a tutor can be found if one wants to learn past a basic Mene Madras education. The tools and supplies in Lab A are generally very simplistic, and rather old. The newer lab supplies are for the privileged practitioners in the second lab. Lab A is prohibited from use unless accompanied by an official employee from the facility.

Hanging from the bottom of Lab A, and the cavern ceiling, further below is the second lab, known as Lab B, for the more seasoned scientist where the spiral staircase ends as part of the stalactite and into carefully sculpted stone platforms to loop around the bulbous tip of the stalactite so a door can be opened. This lab is not specifically meant for the examination of patients. It is similar to the first lab above, but with better tools and a larger variety. Lab B is used more to go over the data collected than conduct true experiments. The examination room would be for that, a conjoined bubble between the Purging and the facility for a patients easy access.

Separate from both Lab A and B, hangs
Lab C and D. The Secondary labs hang in their own separate Stalactite, connected by silken ropes to the Research Facility and the Place of Purging.

The patients are both female Symenestra, brave, noble women with the dedication to go through a fatal pregnancy, and surrogates who will experience the same fate most likely against their will. While the former patient has the choice to allow themselves to be inspected, the latter has no choice whatsoever. Examination is often painless, and developed to be life non-threatening so as to keep the population of Kalinor going. However more risky experiments are often performed on surrogates, usually those that have become defective in some manor. Death or danger to the offspring is avoided at all costs, because even though a cure will not be found in the near future, it is important to continue the Symenestra race so others may pick up the current progress made.

To learn from the Facility, one would only need to apply in the main hall with the Head Research Director, if he is not busy. Requirements for employment will be listed below. It is important to remember that even though the facility encourages those who wish to participate in the research facility, the facility does hold high requirements. There is also no need to fear whether you have different views than the other scientists, all scientists have the same common goal that allows them to cooperate: Fixing the Symenestra problem. Because the scientists share the same views, the facility is not run politically, like other aspects of Symenestra culture. Those who hold higher skills are treated the same as others . This means that the Head Research Director can and will be changed if another proves to be more efficient than he/she already is.

NPCs
ImageName: Dovolod Scarlet
Age: Fall of 470AV
Title: Current Head Researcher (514AV)
Skills: Medicine (60), Biology (55), Herbalism (50), Philtering (45), Intelligence (30), Leadership (25)
Bio & History: Dovolod is an introverted man, but he his far from unfriendly. He has trouble holding casual conversations but is a hard worker and an avid scientist. He will never leave a question unanswered, even if it takes him seasons to answer one. He was elected as the Head Researcher not only for how fast he excelled with his skill but also barbecue he is one of the most level-headed of the scientists, making him a natural leader. Unlike most of the scientist, he did not spend his entire life dedicated to the Symenestra problem. He only started when his wife died. Although he and his wife took a surrogate for their first child, he lost his loved one to her second child. Although it was completely her choice, Dovolod doesn't believe that she should've had to make such a difficult choice. He loves both of his sons equally, despite it all, but he struggles to find a solution to the tragic necessity of creating life, and is very agreeable with those who strive for the same thing.

ImageName: Uelladsa Quercus
Age: Summer of 467AV
Title: Scientist
Skills: Biology (55), Anatomy (55), Medicine (45), Teaching (40), Leadership (35), Poison (30)
Bio & History: Uelladsa is one of the more the most temperamental scientist in the facility. When you first meet her she comes across as a friendly woman, but it doesn't take long for her to unleash words that the Svefra don't even know. Although her words tend to be quiet, they are sharp and meaningful and Uelladsa has no issue putting someone in their place. Like most the of the small group of scientists that work at the facility, she has worked for the cause since she left Mene Madres. Her dedication has taken over her personal life, leaving her without a husband or children. It is often joked that this is why she is so crabby. However despite it all, she is heavily respected for the good she does. She makes one of the best teachers and mentors in the whole facility if you can withstand the curses she throws at you.

Employment
Assistants
Assistants are being trained to be researchers. The requirements for this position include having at least 15 xp in Medicine, Biology, Intelligence or Anatomy. Assistants can also start with 10 xp in two of those skills. All other skills will be learned during their time at the facility. Although assistants do not officially have any one mentor, they often tend to take a majority of their lessons from one or two researches. Assistants are only paid 5-7 gm/day. If an assistance levels past competency they are usually moved to the title of a scientist.

Scientists
The scientists make up the minds behind the research facility. Not only do they gather and collect data, they also analyze it in order to find a solution for the problem at hand. The scientist elect the Head Researcher based on the candidates achievements once a year. Scientists are also in charge of teaching the assistants along with their regular work. Requirements for becoming a scientist include a minimum of competency (26 xp) in two of the following skills: Medicine, Biology, Intelligence or Anatomy. Other skills such as Poison or Philtering will be considered based on their use. The starting pay for scientists is 8 gm/day.

Head Researcher
The Only difference between the Head Researcher and other scientists is that they have the highest skill points in Medicine, Biology, Anatomy or Intelligence. They are treated no differently than the other scientist, except that they tend to be the first person to go to when a problem does not have an immediate answer and will often help direct the focus of the other scientist. Starting pay is the same as other scientists.

Guards
There tend not to be all that many guards in the research facility, because it is mostly open to the public. However, a guard is necessary for keeping surrogates in check as well as keeping the general public out of the labs. Guards start at 5 gm/day.

Volunteering
Mothers
Although the facility is a mostly open-to-the-public organization, it takes its volunteers seriously. The brave Symenestra mothers who choose to volunteer are very highly respected. The scientists do everything in their power to maintain the health and safety of their maternal volunteers. Despite the safety, mothers will often be tested and consent will be needed in order to fully submit for testing.

Surrogate mothers are chosen at the consent of their families. Volunteering a surrogate is a quicker process as long as the family give their full consent and the surrogate is eligible for testing.

Outbreak Patients
Virus or bacterial outbreaks are rare in Kalinor, but when they do appear, it is devastating on the small community. The facility is often the front-line when it comes to finding a cure. Those who have contracted the virus first are often asked to volunteer in order to find what the cause and cure of the virus may be.

Other Cases
When a reason arises for the research facility to begin research on live test-subjects, volunteers are often asked to participate. More often than not all procedures and tests hold safety at the utmost importance. It is the research facilities goal to help their population, not harm it.
