More replies of the martial kind. The guy was so level headed and calm and collected. This made it clear to Pulren that he was severely outclassed as his attack seemed ot be turned on itself and he found himself reeling and almost falling to the ground. Almost. He did have enough command over himself to stop that from happening and when the call for enough was sounded by Aoren, he only nodded. "Yeah, I yield. I have no hope of defeating you."

Turning and standing as straight as his bruised ego would allow, Pulren looked to his better and took the analysis of his fighting with a nod. It was accurate. "Well, it's been bar brawls my whole life before the Guard, man. My only serious training has come from the Guard and that is armed and armored. Some of us weren't blessed with a proper upbringing, I guess." Maybe he was doomed to shuck scales, as Uncle Pal had always told him. It made his heart sink a little. He perked up a little and wiped some water from the corner of his eye when Aoren told him that he could still have potential.

He looked down at the dirt before looking back at Aoren. "I'd really appreciate that.If I have this stuff, I need to know how to use it. I don't want to kill anyone by accident with it. I saw all those Guards drown and burn, the twisted looks on their faces." He tried to rub the images out of his eyes before blinking again and nodding to Aoren. "I'm ready to listen and learn. I'll keep quiet and do whatever you say." He would. He really didn't want to be a loser.

Form Versus Function (Aoren)

Postby Aoren on November 16th, 2014, 1:05 pm

Aoren gave a nod. He rolled his shoulders wincing slightly as the tender areas announced their unhappiness at the sparring. The ache would pass. For the moment he would simply be forced to endure through his discomfort. Isikai walked up to Aoren peering up at the Drykas man with a quirk of his head. Aoren knelt running a hand over the dog’s dark fur. The blue eyed man’s gaze became distant. In the corridors of his mind he was searching on how best to approach teaching Pulren how to unlock his abilities. He was a man who had no idea the potential that resided within him and if not careful things could go terribly wrong.

Have a seat, Pulren.” Aoren shifted doing the same. Never mind that they were on the road. It didn’t seem like the Mirahil Pass was receiving much traffic that day anyways. Extending one of his legs outward while tucking the opposite in Aoren inhaled deeply and upon exhaling he reached for his toes. He grasped his foot with his hand feeling the stretch in his lower back muscles as well as along his hamstrings and through the mid-portion of his leg. He formed his next statement during the seconds that passed while he allowed his body to relax through the stretch. He shifted legs speaking as he stretched.

What I’m about to teach you could get me into a lot of trouble if the University ever found out. If that time comes, I’ll worry about the consequences. It’s better that you don’t wander around ignorant of your abilities. That’s not something any of us want.” Aoren shifted bringing both legs in so that the soles of his feet were flat against each other. He grasped his ankles pressing down on them while simultaneously pulling the heels of his feet inward to his groin until he felt the stretch appropriately. While his routine might have seemed odd to Pulren, Aoren had found that his body as a whole was much less sore if he took the time to stretch his muscles after an extensive workout.

There are two forms of magic that mages practice. There are the Personal Disciplines and the World Disciplines. Reimancy is a personal discipline. Personal magic is called such because the power to wield it is drawn from you.” Aoren released his ankles shifting his legs so that he was seated comfortably. He grasped his left elbow in his right hand and pulled his arm across his chest until he felt mild discomfort in the pulling of his muscles.

If you draw too much of yourself to wield the power, you will destroy yourself. This is called Overgiving. It has many consequences. Some of them are mild and simply part of using the magic. They will fade with time and rest. If you push yourself too far however, this will shatter you. You will descend into madness, your body will shift becoming a grotesque reflection of the error you’ve made and in the most extreme cases it can even kill you.” Aoren met Pulren’s gaze keeping eye contact with him for several moments in an effort to drive that point home. It wasn’t the most elaborate lesson in regards to the consequences of Overgiving but to Aoren it summarized the core of what it was. This was why discipline in magic was important. Through temperance and control Aoren believed that such drastic consequences could be mitigated. He did not believe they could be entirely avoided, some things were simply inevitable. He switched arms grunting slightly as he felt the pull in his muscles.

The World Disciplines do not draw their power from you. As the name implies, they draw their power from the World meaning they are shaped by the tools you use to perform them. I won’t go much further than that as it won’t really be the focus of what I’m trying to teach you.” Aoren was a practitioner of a few World Disciplines himself but in his opinion he didn’t wield them with enough proficiency to really teach them at length.

Reimancy is the Discipline of the Elements. Earth, Air, Water, Fire and any combination of the basic four that you can think of.” Dropping his arm he rolled his shoulders once again loosening them as much as he could. He then adopted a meditative pose sitting with as straight a back as he could manage at that point in time with his hands resting lightly upon the tops of his knees with palms downward. Isikai seat his head in Aoren’s lap receiving a smile from the Drykas. He pet the dog with a fond look in his eye.

Drawing upon the power of reimancy requires pushing a representation of that power out into the physical world and manipulating it. Are you ready to give that a try?

So, that settled things. The spar was over and Pulren was glad for it, having been at the wrong end of an asskicking. Taking a seat in the empty road along with the victor of the martial mingling, he rested back on his palms while watching Aoren do some kind of strange stretches. He was a powerful bird, but an odd one, Pulren thought to himself as Aoren continued to contort his body in all manner of strange positions.

The Guard did change positions, trying to be more forward and upright in his position of listening, as it seemed that Aoren was going to pass on some kind of profane secret to him. He wondered who the 'us' was that the Wizard mentioned by saying that it wasn't something that any of 'us' wanted. Maybe some kind of elite Wizard group? Wouldn't surprise him, as Zeltiva seemed to have many secrets just below the surface. He spoke of World Disciplines and Personal Disciplines, of the difference and of Overgiving. It seemed as if Aoren wanted to make sure that Pulren understood what Overgiving was, but Aoren hadn't been on the Maiden's Voyage. Pulren had a fine idea of what it meant to go too far.

Finally, the Wizard brought up what Reimancy was. Pulren perked up when listening as this concerned him and it also intrigued him. As far as he knew, just about anything could be reduced down to one of the four elements. Commanding them meant to have dominion over everything, but then again, his mind was more of a task based creature and he could see the myriad of uses that could be applied. He had to keep his mind and attention on Aoren for now, however, nodding when asked if he wanted to give Reimancy a try.

"Absolutely, I've been anxious about trying it out so that I can have more control in my life. How do we do it?"

Form Versus Function (Aoren)

Aoren nodded considering carefully how he was going to instruct Pulren properly. He recalled the lesson that he’d given Shane a few seasons prior. Pulren was different from Shane. The Hypnotist had been familiar with magic on a more intrinsic level than what he knew of the guardsman before him. When Aoren had the task in mind he gave a nod.

Bring yourself into a meditative sitting position. Legs folded, hands resting in your lap. Breathe. Breathe easy. Breathe even. Don’t force yourself to breathe deeply. Don’t force yourself to try and be calm.” One of the easiest ways to get Pulren into the proper mindset was to relax him. Aoren firmly believed that meditation was a road that prepared the mind to open itself up to broader possibilities. He approached the art of meditation a little differently than most however. With his hand slowly running over the soft fur of his dog Aoren observed the young man in front of him watching for signs that he might be in a more relaxed state. Curious, Aoren reached for his djed. He drew the threads of his magic to the forefront of his vision. With a few deep breaths Aoren willed his djed to cover his eyes. Slowly, Pulren’s aura came into view and with it a rudimentary understanding of his present emotions would come as well.

Every person holds within them a spark. That spark defines who you are. Within that flame is written everything there is to know about you. Search for it. Feel for it. Take hold of it.” Aoren took hold of his own aura willing it to fall into harmony with Pulren’s. He’d learned that it was only through careful concentration and the aligning of his aura with another’s that information could be discerned on the finer level. Aoren closed his eyes for a moment envisioning the mist that formed the outer most layer of his soul falling into place with Pulren’s. As the moments ticked by Aoren began to feel traces of the other man’s emotions. It was surface information, really the only information that he could take hold of without long minutes of dedicated concentration.

When you have taken hold of this spark, envision it filling your body. It exists within your blood. It flows throughout the whole of your being. It is in every breath, every bone, and every muscle. Now think on the world around you.” Aoren opened his eyes bringing up his hands in a cupping gesture. He furrowed his brow as he maintained the focus he had on Pulren’s aura. He was doing his best to gauge the other man’s mood as well as clues about the flow of djed through his body.

Think on bringing this spark into existence outside of your body. Push it outward. Mold it. Make it real.” Aoren wasn’t at all certain if anything he was saying would make sense to Pulren. He had no experience in teaching someone the absolute fundamentals of magic. This was a rudimentary lesson at best but it would have to suffice.

At last, the initial instructions were being given. Pulren couldn't help but be excited, finally getting a use out of the horrors of the Maiden's Voyage. Already seated, he listened and folded his legs, though his wouldn't fold so easily. "Ah, stretching. Now I get it." He chuckled to himself after realizing what the strange movements of the healer had been before. he reached forward and stretched a little until the posture wasn't so uncomfortable. He didn't close his eyes, not wanting to miss anything visual of importance. In his experience , Reimancy had been a very emotive and visual practice.

He did have to close his eyes briefly so as to focus on his breathing. His excitement had quickened it initially, so he began breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth, much like the breathing for running, but at a much slower pace. Once his thoughts were settling down and his breathing slow and even, he opened his eyes and observed the observer, waiting for the next step. Anticipation and curiosity were the primary feelings he had as he waited to see what was next. Listening to the lecture, he felt inside of himself for this spark. He felt a giddy kind of laughter inside his body at the exposure of this hidden talent, feeling it naturally within his chest. It was something solid, it was the mountain that protected, the hills that fought the stormy winds. It was a barrier, much like his shield, something that could protect himself and those he loved. He nodded at Aoren when he was feeling the spark.

The further words brought to mind the feeling of protection and Pulren himself felt as if he were made of stone. He was unbreakable and invulnerable. The waves could pound against him as a cliff, the winds could howl against him like a rock face, fires could burn and flash over his surface without penetrating within. His mind's eye saw him seated before Aoren as a living statue, strong and confident in his ability to protect. When the final instructions were given, he felt a tingling in the scar of his chest and a green gas seeped out of it, much like the green cloud that had seeped in on that fateful day.

He watched as the gas floated out in front of him, his own hand coming up to mimic Aoren's, a cupping motion made as if to catch the green energy. The small green cloud settled in Pulren's hand and he closed his fingers around it. He felt something solid and cool fill his hand and when he opened his fingers, he saw a small stone there. So there it was. He had created a stone out nothing. His attention was complete on this small round thing that would be all but overlooked anywhere else in the hills of Zeltiva. This rock was very different.

Form Versus Function (Aoren)

Postby Aoren on December 13th, 2014, 5:23 pm

On the fringes of Pulren’s aura, Aoren could see the calm that settled over the young man. He watched as the flickering of emotions stilled. The Drykas man concentrated awaiting the moment when Pulren would take hold of his abilities as he suspected. Before long Aoren noticed a fluctuation in the man’s aura that he could only assume was the guardsman reaching for his inner djed. With a nod Aoren reached up rubbing at his eyes. He released his hold on his own djed banishing the gifts of Auristics. His eyes watered briefly as they were struck with a feeling of dryness. He blinked a few times before he caught sight of the transmutation that occurred before him.

Well done.” Aoren couldn’t say he was surprised at Pulren’s first element. During the course of his own experiences and in what he’d learned the first element of a Reimancer was often telling about who they were as a person. Aoren’s first element had been Fire. He rarely called upon the element for destructive reasons as he tended to use it for more artful displays. It remained one of the elements that he found easier to manipulate but he more often used Air as it tended to be less harmful in more tense situations. Taking a steady breath Aoren nodded. He reached for his djed once again only this time it was to call upon the discipline of Reimancy. Isikai shifted briefly and Aoren comforted the dog with a gentle pat. By now the canine was no stranger to magic having been around him for some time but the feeling was likely still strange to him.

Raising a hand Aoren produced a sphere of Res roughly the size of an apple. He let the azure Res hover for a moment before waving his hand over it. The sphere split dividing into four smaller spheres. Aoren felt the weight of each ball of Res within the back of his mind as he maintained control over them. It wasn’t heavy but merely took up a portion of his concentration. Fortunately what he was doing wasn’t going to be anything grand or flashy nor would he need to produce or expend any further djed to get his point across.

Earth.” Aoren focused on one of the spheres. The outer layers of the sphere grew darker as he exerted his will over the Res. The liquid slowed its motion until it became smooth until it was solid almost down to its core becoming grey stone.

Air.” As with the sphere prior Aoren concentrated directing the Res to lower in temperature slightly. He willed the Res to attract the air around it so that upon being draw to the Res it misted and swirled in motion with the sphere.

Water.” The transmutation that followed was simple enough. With a nod of his head the third sphere became clearer and less viscous. Water formed, small droplets hovering around the droplet of Res that remained untransmuted at the core of the water ball.

Fire.” The fourth and final sphere grew brighter until it ignited with a flash. The heat of azure flames burned steadily until they calmed and became the familiar orange of more natural fire.

The four basic elements a Reimancer can command. You are an Initiate. Your first element is Earth as you can see. As you grow to become an Adept you will gain the ability to manipulate your second element and from there your first para-element. As a Savant you will command three of these basic elements and their combinations. As a Master, all four will be at your disposal and any combination you can think of from there.” Aoren wove his hand over the spheres. The Air joined with the Water producing an icy crystal. The Drykas man clenched his fist briefly and cracks formed in the ice before he transmuted the last of the Res within it and it shattered falling to the ground. The Fire and the Earth drifted nearer to one another. Aoren wove the two elements together threading the djed of the conjured substances into one form until the stone ignited and the fire poured into the cracks that formed in the stones surface. Aoren made the newly formed lava drift a little ways away from him so as not to burn himself.

Ice and Lava. Two of just an innumerable amount of combinations you will one day be able to create. What I must stress…” Aoren took a deep breath. With what remained of the Res within the lava he transmuted it to water. A hiss filled the air as the fire was cooled and the rock fell to the ground between the two of them.

…is control. Respect the elements. Fire is as passionate as you are. Ice can chill your soul if you let it. Water can just as easily drown you as it will flow to your will. Air can be whimsical and Earth can be unmoving. The list goes on. This journey is your own, Pulren. It’s up to you to master these abilities and not let them destroy you.

Still rubbing the small stone in his hand, Pulren looked at Aoren in a different light, the other man rubbing his eyes. He was seeing Pulren in some way that hurt his eyes maybe? Or perhaps the concentration caused it. He knew he had a lot to learn about Reimancy and as the healer began to focus and create his presentation, it was hard for the Zeltivan to keep his mouth from hanging open in wonder and amazement.

His inner child wanted to reach out and touch the spheres of energy, or Res as he called them. It was like his own green Res but his was a softer blue color. it seemed to be an expression of the inner qualities of the person, a fact that Pulren appreciated. He watched as the four elements were formed, his vision climbing all over the different expressions. It was so exciting! Gone was any cynicism as he observed the magic being performed and listened to the various levels and tiers that he would some day reach and surpass himself. it made him seriously consider going to the University's Magic College. It was something he had previously mocked but now it seemed like a very possible reality.

When Water and Air became Ice, this only opened his mind further, as if he had been waiting for someone to come with a kind of pry bar and crack open what had been there his whole life. Possibilities. Then, even more insane was the creation of something called lava. It was incredibly hot and Pulren could feel the heat from it. he tried to let his mind wrap around the possibilities of his own power. Earth would combine with water and become.. Mud? Or with Air and become Dust? His mind could hardly focus between the presentation and his own wild imaginings. He would have a lot to ponder on in the seasons ahead.

The warnings were listened to and he wanted to heed them, but some kind of hunger inside of him made him nod but really think of how all of those things could be enjoyed rather than avoided. How they could be profitable and not hurtful. "Thank you, Aoren. You have given me insight into a world I never knew I would be able to experience. I owe you." nonchalantly, he stood up and dusted himself off, looking over at the dog and smiling. "I won't forget your help. I need to get back to town and hit the streets. My shift is starting at dusk and I want to get cleaned up. I'll see you around, friend." He nodded and smiled, his feet picking up and pushing him down the dusty road. As he jogged back to the city, he thought of all of the many adventures and uses he would summon from this grand power given him by the fire bitch. He still wasn't sorry for killing her, but he wordlessly thanked her nonetheless as he disappeared over the hill.
