Caelum's warmly spoken words set a blossom of feeling through her chest so powerful it was like the man had reached through her chest and touched the very core of her being. Though her expression did not change her grip tightened ever so slightly on her staff as she looked toward him, catching those beautiful eyes and this time not looking away. If she had been human tears might have fallen down her cheeks, such as the joy she felt... but of course monsters could not cry.

His words influence you greatly. the Familiar's tone was not overly amused.

Think nothing of it. It is not as if I care what he thinks of me. she responded with as much confidence as she could through their link, but of course the Irylid knew well that it was a lie. She was please, greatly so.

Closing her eyes briefly Evalin smiled and shook her head in answer to Caelum, "Have I no use for further talk child." Standing Evalin pulled her hood up once more, leaning on her staff as she looked out through the shadow the fabric created, "If you have need of a monster, then allow me to assist you."

Wretched Aura: As a Wretched One Evalin possesses an unnatural aura about her that causes unease in those who get too close. It can come as a prickle of the hair on the back of the neck, a sense of 'wrongness' about her. How people experience it is different depending on their personality and how they handle the unnatural and unknown. Animals tend to become more agitated, more easily sensing how wrong Evalin is and often avoiding contact with her.

That which ales you (Caelum)

Postby Caelum on January 17th, 2015, 3:16 pm

When the sorceress rose in agreement to play monster, the smile Caelum wore sharpened into something dangerous. It was an expression usually hidden, but it glinted now out of citrine eyes with a different kind of promise altogether. He cast a glance at Alements double doors and the bright day that lingered, tinny and thin, beyond. Abandoning his tea tins with a quiet clatter, he beckoned with the curve of once-noble fingers and turned for the kitchen door.

Leading the way, the door to the kitchen swung open before him and closed again after Evalin. It was a bright, cheerful room with pale stone countertops and sink basins and a heavy black iron oven and stove combination. Pots and pans hung from a copper ceiling rack and there were several doors set into the walls. There was one for the pantry and dry goods storage and another that led to the narrow alley and a third to which Caelum headed, ambling past a row of potted cooking herbs and an entire tea tray that seemed to have been set out to steep some time ago.

When Caelum opened that final door, a scent wafted out. It smelled something of the cold but more poignantly of the season, like wood fires and frost gathering on windowpanes and the slow bruising collection of wild, molting autumn days. The ice house smelled today like aging fall and that had always been a poisoned time for Caelum, blood splattered and back lit with the sort of butchery that forced the world toward its winter sleep. This year, in particular, was off tilt, made all the more evident when the charming physician stepped away from the doorway to reveal the half melted face of a man tied to a chair beside the slow melting block of ice.

Caelum cast a long, slinking look at Evalin and slumped a shoulder against the door. The knob clunked softly against the wall beneath his weight. "He isn't much interested in answering my questions, in being polite. His name's Yakob."

Yakob's head was down, but he had lifted brown eyes to gaze at them with an increasing ferocity. Scars clawed down the right side of his face and were today overlaid with the crisp and oozing curl of recently burnt flesh. It was cold enough in the ice house to cause his breath to steam. The floor was streaked in watery pink, melting ice and something richer, thicker channeling slowly toward the drain in the middle of the floor. The floor slanted slightly toward it, to keep the drainage from spilling out the door and into Caelum's precious kitchen.

"Think you can help?" Caelum smiled disarmingly casual at his guest.

That which ales you (Caelum)

The look that appeared for a brief flash on the man's features was perhaps more alluring to the Immortal than anything else he had said thus far. For a tick, a fraction of a moment Caelum was like her... a monster. Without hesitation she made to follow him, passing through the portal into the kitchen and then further to the room beyond.

In truth Evalin was not sure exactly what she would find when she passed across the threshold into the room that smelled of ice and a mixture of other strange scents. When the image was presented to her, however, she knew that it could never have been anything else. This scene, this picture of a man bound and cruel intentions floating in the air... it was in every way a perfect depiction of who she was, and what others expected of her. This was indeed the life of a monster, of a terrible and horrible beast that knew not love or kindness or compassion. In her heart of hearts the Immortal paused and shivered at the weight of the truth she saw written upon the walls and floor. What had this man done? She did not know and perhaps it did not even matter. Caelum wanted to know something from him, and of course it was not for Evalin to question. Still... had there always been this heaviness in her soul when faced with such things? A sense that it was wrong?

Her fingers trailed lightly over the wood of the door frame, and as Caelum looked at her she did not return the smile. Her eyes drifted up and down the man, her grip tightening and loosening on her staff several times as her heart felt heavy and she wondered... is this all there really was to her? For a very brief tick there was a deep sadness that flitted across her features, like for a moment tears threatened to show the heart of the little girl hidden deep in side. As quick as it was there though it was gone, replaced by a mask of nothingness as Evalin closed the door fully behind them both if it had not been closed before.

"This is just what I am..." She said softly, not looking at Caelum as she stepped forward, not really answering his question at all.

"Heh, this bastard couldn't break me so now he sends little girls to do is work for him? This ought to be good." the man's scars pulled tight as he sneered, spitting in their general direction.

"This is just what I am..." Evalin whispered again, stopping a few feet from the man as her cold red eyes stared down at him. She could not help the feelings inside, the twisting turmoil of ethics and morality that she had never remembered coping with before. Somehow this felt wrong, yet still the desire to do as Caelum wished grew and was slowly overpowering this weakness in her soul that belonged not in a monster like Evalin. The conflict awakened something deep, deep within. Something that had lay dorment since her arrival in Riverfall. Something ancient, cold and dark... Evalin's core shook the dust free and began to resurface as the moral dilemmas before her brought forth a familiar feeling of anger... and hate to the forefront of her mind.

The aura of unease grew around her as the Immortal stopped trying to consciously restrain it. She no longer cared, nor bothered to hide her wrongness for now that ugliness would shield her, hide her true soul from the men in the room and maybe even from herself. She had to find it again, that old her that could be cold and cruel and uncaring for that is what was demanded of her. The more she searched the colder her eyes came, the more the hate filled her as she remembered more and more of what brought her here. Fate... fate be damned for all that had occurred, for where she was and what she was... fate be damned for this man who did not realize what it was he faced.

It would feel like the air grew several degrees colder, but surely it was only in their heads. The shiver that run up Yakob's spine was surely just because of the temperature, and not the lifeless being that stood before him. His muscled tightened as he instinctively felt the need to move away from Evalin, but of course the restraints would keep that from happening.

"Well bitch what are you going to do? Just stand there? Why don't you take off a few of those layers and give old Yakob a good look at ya." He laughed, though not with quite as much fire as he pretended to have.

"Be silent. Your voice is such a nuisance." Switching her staff to her right hand Evalin walked to the block of ice that was beside the main. The fingers of her right hand ran small circles over the chilled surface of the ice, and as she did she began to concentrate upon the ring on her finger. It was a slow process, but the item created from malediction began to pull strength from the rest of her body, directing it all to gather to her right hand and arm, building more and more as the ticks went by.

"Yeah? Sorry for that, but aren't you supposed to be making me talk or something?" He laughed again, gaining a bit more of his gusto back as he looked at Caelum, "This the best you can do horn boy?"

Ten ticks. That was all it would take. Raising her right hand Evalin curled her fingers into a fist, and slammed it down onto the block of ice. Cracks erupted from the point of impact, ripping down the block until the whole structured shattered, crumbling to pieces upon the ground and scattering about them as the force of the impact sent some of the pieces hurtling away and bouncing off the walls.

"You will speak... but only when I wish to hear you." Shaking the excess ice crystals from her fingers she turned to Yakob, "Be silent or I will begin with crushing your limbs, starting from your toes and fingers and moving to your more... delicate areas."

Yakob looked like he was about to say something, but after Evalin cast a meaningful glance at his manhood his jaw snapped shut and he simply stared, the confidence beginning to slip from his features.

"Deep in the jungles of Falyndar there is a large cave in which the serpent people dwell. The caverns stretch for miles and miles beneath the earth and stone, and it was there that I met an interesting woman in the dungeons of Zinrah." She walked around to stand in front of Yakob and wrapped both hands around her staff, "She had a curious way of torturing her victims. She would play her flute as she walked down the isles until she had selected who she wished to entertain. When she began she would make a few smaller cuts, and then sit down to play a simple melody. Cut and then play, over and over again for bells until the person was nothing but bloody ribbons and his voice so torn from screaming he could only whimper. By the time she was finished the creature would even cry in time with the music. In doing this the woman only needed to raise her flute to her lips to call terror to the eyes of those in her care, and when she played the screams began on their own."

Looking back at Caelum Evalin smiled, though the gesture did not meet her dead eyes, "In this I learned there was an art to this practice, a performance that must be put on so that those who participate never forget, and those that hear of it never wish to join. As with many things in life, true torture is an art of showmanship."

Looking back at Yakob Evalin raised her staff and slammed its point a mere hairs breath from the split in his legs, and where its tip struck flames erupted and fire spread out in wide sweeping arches.

"What the petch!?" Yakob tried to scoot away from the fires, but his legs were tied to the legs of the chair, yet even so fires were spreading behind him as well until he was surrounded by a small inferno that quickly died down. In their pace was an intricate, complex weave of designs and glyphs that formed a circle about 5 feet in diameter. Four lines radiated out from the tip of Evalin's staff to the outer circle, all of these drawings were burned into the ground as blackened scorch marks.

Stepping back Evalin extended her staff to Caelum, offering it to him to hold for the moment before she turned back to Yakob.

"Who the petch are you?" his eyes were wide as he pulled at his restraints as Evalin came closer.

Leaning down Evalin gripped the man's wrists where they were tied, "I told you to be silent. Snapper... Restrain his tongue. Crusher my dear, bind his body more firmly to his seat." The two snake heads lifted themselves from where they rested, ruby eyes glittering as they turned to stare at Yakob before unwinding themselves from around Evalin's neck and traveling down her arms to the man's.

"Woah, ok ok wait. Caelum, we can work something out if you jus--" his words were muffled as Snapper wrapped it's body around Yakob's neck and throat, covering his lips and only allowing a soft mumble escape. Crusher wrapped itself around the man's chest and shoulders, ensuring he would not be able pull free of the restraints. Snapper's head hovered close to Yakob's face, and with a snap of Evalin's fingers its mouth opened and long metallic fangs made themselves known to those in the room. Yakob did not take his eyes off them for long as he cast furtive glances at Caelum.

"The time for negotiations has ended child. Such was offered to you before, and you spat it back at the man who offered you mercy. Now your life is in my hands and I care not if you speak." Looking down at the ice that was crumbled beside the man's restraints Evalin waved a hand over them, and from her palm clear res flowed out and wound their way into the ice itself. Tilting and twisting her fingers like a puppeteer Evalin selected six pieces of ice that she called to float over her palm. With her other hand Evalin made a show of running her fingers over each piece, and as she did she elongated them, sharpened the edges with additional layers of ice until each one was roughly two inches in length and nearly as thick as Evalin's finger.

With a lazy flick of her hand one of the icy spikes was sent into the man's leg, and the pain in his eyes and the muffled cries of his voice sent a mixture of emotion Evalin did not care to decipher through her heart. Another was sent into his other thigh, two into his upper arms, and the last two were sent into the muscles of his chest.

"I wonder..." raising both of her hands so that Yakob could see them Evalin smiled as she sent a surge of res from her fingertips, sparks beginning to fly from them, "When shall you regret your silence? Certainly it shall come before I finish."

The sound of electricity sparking increased as Evalin leaned forward, touching the two ice spikes in the man's legs and sending a wave of it into his legs. The man's body shook, his voice caught in his throat as his hands gripped and dug into the wood. Evalin let this go for a tick or two and then released the flow, letting the man collapse as all his muscles relaxed at once and he sucked desperately for air.

Evalin let him have a few ticks to breath before reaching forward to send a wave through the spikes in his arms. His body shook once more, eyes rolling back before Evalin released the magic and let him relax once more. Yakob moaned softly, though snapper ensured the sound did not carry far as Evalin looked back at Caelum, "You may ask whatever you like. Let him think on the answers for a time, and we will ensure his words or two." As she said this she flicked her hand and sent a spark through his chest, Yakob's body arching against his bond as this strong pulse made his vision blur and his limbs go numb.

OOCOK Evalin will continue to shock him until Caelum says otherwise, and when Caelum thinks hes good and ready he can have Evalin command snapper to let the man talk. I will follow your lead ^.^

That which ales you (Caelum)

Postby Caelum on February 18th, 2015, 11:59 pm

Caelum remained in the doorway, caught in an almost indolent slouch, and he did not look away. His arms were folded over his chest and he tilted his temple against the doorjamb, the blunted tip of a blood colored horn scraping the wood. Some said spring was the cruelest season, but Caelum knew that fall was the most vicious. It had revealed itself to him long ago in the sheer shifting of his colors as summer faded into fall.

Interest was keen in his regard as he watched Evangeline transform from a small, strangeling girl into a fierce and terrible thing. He had wondered at the private things she had chosen to reveal to him but chimes ago and if she had a decent grip on her own nature. In his experience, most people were not terribly self-aware and, if they were, often failed to viewed themselves in proper perspective. He himself was not blameless in this regard and there were people who would say that he hardly knew himself at all. Of course, those people had not watched him butcher and crawl nor were privy to the darkest hordes of his secrets.

Most people would never have imagined him here now. And while this was a deviation from his present day personality, there were years of his life where it would not have been. He might have been kin to Evangeline, willing to play the monster for a smiling stranger.

And just what did that make him?

When the sorceress handed him her staff, he accepted it with a mix of reverence and wonder. The spreading flame of sigilry on his ice house floor was studied while it flared, and he attempted to read her glyphs and ascertain their intent by their pattern. He ran his fingertips down the wood, studying the item even as he listened to Evangeline's story of the jungle piper. It was not unlike other legends he had heard in his time, but he thought it held a ring of truth to it and so he mentally filed away its details.

It was a change when Yakob opened his mouth to speak, but not enough of one for Caelum to look up. He turned the staff between both his palms and rolled his shoulder back against the door jamb so that instead of facing the interior of the ice house, he was angled slightly toward the kitchen. Half of his attentions were on their voices, the rise and fall, the pain and gusts of desire that stalked him. For now, he ignored it, and with an almost boyish intensity, he drew to mind an image of a glyphing circle akin to those he had drawn in the past. Next he rapped the butt of the staff against his kitchen floor and held his breath, waiting to see what magical madness might erupt.

Nothing happened. Faintly disappointed, he dropped the staff to rest against his shoulder and resumed his slouch on the threshold, peering in. It was just in time to watch Yakob try to scream. Caelum scratched at the side of his nose and smiled a little, terribly impressed by his hired monster's unique skill set. Their victim's desperate need for the pain to stop, to be released, to fly was not ignored by Caelum so much as he kept swatting each individual want down like flies before they could land upon him like a dinner plate left out overnight. The chains tightened in his stomach and he cleared his throat in irritation.

Finally, as Yakob jerked beneath the blasts, spikes drilling into his flesh, Caelum nodded gratefully to the sorceress, and then he turned and walked away.

It was a straight path out of range of Yakob's needs and towards the water basin at the far end of Alements kitchen. Leaning the staff against the wall, Caelum shoved up the sleeves of his tunic and splashed cold water onto his face. Fingertips flattened to press against his eyelids, releasing bursts of color and light across his interior sight. The two gnosis marks of Rak'keli emblazoned on either of his hands, the winged snakes in pale, opal gold practically burned in their twine up his wrists and forearms. Need was an ache inside of him, hollowing him out in an attempt to make space for the self of another.

He coughed down into the basin and shook his head sharply. Bright auburn hair spilled back, and he sighed, eyes closed to hear the muffled shouts of torture. A little light inside of him went out.

Retrieving the staff, he walked loose hipped and casual back to the door of the ice house. Both hands folded over the top of the staff and he leaned against it this time instead of the jamb, watching with eyes that were eons older than this body of his as Yakob relaxed in the aftermath of another shock. Canting his chin toward Evangeline when she looked toward him, Caelum waited for her to command Snapper to allow Yakob to speak.

"Owen Locke's been nosing around," the ethaefal stated shortly. His voice, so inviting and warm when he was addressing Evangeline, rang like flint strikes with expectation now. "Why? Did Provedan send him?"

"Please, man. Look -- Caelum? I didn't know. I didn't --"

"Does Provedan know?" Caelum cut him off. "Does he know."

"No! No. He has not fucking clue. Please, just..."

"What of Tortuga? The rest of the rougher men? Do they know? Do they suspect?" Yakob shook his head, blood and sweat flicking away. Caelum continued. "What do they make then of it?"

"That Owen just wants some mizas. That's it. Owen wants mizas and Decath, Caelum, shit. You know he's always been an uppity asshole and that's all they think of him hanging with you. Mark it. I wouldn't lie." Yakob choked miserably. "I'll just go. I'll leave the city, the whole petching region, I don't care. Whatever you want just keep her away from me, please.

"Alright," Caelum murmured. Golden eyes, impossible to read as words written on the sun, slanted towards his monster. He nodded a little before refocusing on Yakob. "What day is Provedan getting in his next big haul of slaves?"

"The eighty-ninth," Yakob gasped. "Eighty-ninth and we all gotta go collect them. Most of us, at least. It's a godsdamned thing with this new captain out of the ass end of Ravok. So we won't be back to dusk. That good? C'mon. Can I go now? Can I?"

"Sure," Caelum straightened. "You can go, but you're going back to Provedan. I'll need you there."

The slaver winced. "C'mon. C'mon."

"You can lie. You lied to me for hours before she arrived --" Caelum spread a hand toward Evangeline.

Yakob swallowed, eyes closed, and nodded his consent.

Evalin waited patiently to the side as the questioning commenced, idly touching the gem that hung from her neck as she watched the back and forth with little interest. Her mind wandered, catching upon a bit or piece of what was being discussed, but more and more her thoughts circled back to the acts she performed. Was this what she was, what she would always be? Not a person nor a loved one, but instead a tool. A tool for torture and intimidation and death. Her hands were stained red with the blood of dozens, if not hundreds of people. In truth what more could she expect?

Coming back to the world Evalin glanced at Caelum to ensure that he was finished before, once more, Turing her attention to Yakob. His head was bowed but a swift crack of the back of her hand against his cheek brought his attention back to the Immortal, and just as the sting of the action sunk in Evalin's hands were around the man's throat, forcing his head back as the Nuit forced her knee into his gut, just above his groan. She brought her face a mere breath from his, long dark hair falling into a curtain around both of their faces so that all he could see and focus on were those dark blood red eyes.

"You will do all that Caelum asks of you, without hesitation." She whispered softly so that Yakob had to strain to her each word as he struggled to find air in his lungs, "If you do not, I will kill you. If you lie to Caelum again I will cut out your tongue and open you from groin to chin... and then I will kill you." She snapped her fingers with her free hands, Crusher and snapper responding by loosening around the man and making their way back to their master, "If you run, I will find you... and I will drive spikes of stone into you every limb and pin you to a stone twice your size before sending you into the Suvan Sea. Then I will watch you drown... and if you have any family, any loved ones or anything or anyone you care for I will burn them all to ash and scatter them to the four winds. Do you understand?"

With her hand choking the air from him the man could not speak, but he did manage a struggled nod to assent. With that Evalin released him, her scarves once more back in place and unmoving. Turning away from Yakob the Immortal would extend her hand to Caelum, accepting her staff back before walking from the room. She would allow Caelum to do what he wanted. Heal him, release him, it did not matter to her. She would await him patiently to finish, and when he did she would speak just above a whisper to him as well, "Is this the monster you seek...? Are you pleased." She looked away, leaning upon her staff for support, for that she felt was the only real support she had in this existence.

That which ales you (Caelum)

Postby Caelum on April 28th, 2015, 5:19 pm

"I won't. I won't tell a soul, Caelum," Yakob promised miserably. "I understand. I understand."

They were alone now in the ice house and the ethaefal crouched beside Yakob's chair among the blood and soot, frost and ruins. The sound of dripping water echoed abnormally loud, the sound of it bright and providing an odd counterpoint to the nature of their discourse. A knife was slid from Caelum's boot and he weighed it a moment in his hand before jerking out Yakob's bound hands and sawing through the ropes that bound him. Yakob swallowed a yelp, breath pushing heavily out of his nostrils.

"I believe you," Caelum told the slaver, words quiet and rich. They filled the tiny room with something surprising, a faint brush of hope that drew Yakob's gaze as might a flame in the night. "I believe you're a canny sonuvabitch, Yakob, and you will walk from here with your head straight on your shoulders and plan in your heart like a seed."

"I ain't gonna plan against you, Caelum. I ain't," Yakob jerked and whined in the back of his throat as he brought his arms around to rub at his wrists where the bindings had bit into his flesh.

“You ain’t,” Caelum agreed and reached over to close strong fingers about Yakob’s wrist. “In fact the plan I’m referring to is mine.”

The whiff of mockery was lost on Yakob as healing magic spilled into him as pure and sweet as summer yellow wine. It brought a relief so immense and immediate in contrast to the horror through which he had just suffered that dark eyes closed and a shudder shook through him. Oozing wounds slowed and raw nerves eased. Color crept back into his otherwise sickly face and the burn slashing his temple and brow faded, skin curling as it healed. Yakob gulped, heart jumping in his chest, pumping full and fast and strong. Wonder and awe, a kind not exactly like the more terrible shock he had given Evangeline, came over him and he half fell, half slid right off of his chair. Knees cracked to the cold stone floor, splashing blood tinted water, and the slaver gazed at Caelum worshipfully.

“Thank you. Thank you. I can’t.. I won’t tell no one, Caelum. I won’t, not ever. Thank you. What –“ A hand came heavily down on the seat of his abandoned chair and he grasped up, reaching for a hand up, for something to hold on, for anything at all. “What’s your plan? The one in my head you want me be growin’.”

A smile sprawled across the ethaefal’s mouth and Caelum made sure to be that hand up, clasping Yakob’s in his and bracing his weight backwards to help haul the man up. He proceeded to dust him off, tugging at the stains in his clothes and sighing over them. “You ever seen those trees on the plains, friend? The ones that are damn near lain sideways by the wind.”

Yakob nodded and drew in a breath to restore himself. He pulled his hands up and back over his face, into his hair, smoothing it down. He couldn’t turn “Yessir, I seen ‘em.”

“Good. I want you to be one of them, Yakob.” Caelum plucked a thin lock of long, black hair from the arm of the slaver’s shirt. It belonged to Evangeline and he twisted it around his fingers before tucking it into his pocket to put safe away later for a key to his monster’s chavi. Yakob’s blood stained the fingers of his other hand already, and would suffice for the slaver’s chavi key when Caelum flaked it off. "Let your faith in me take root deep and true, but bend to Provedan. Don't let on to him that you're mine now. Can you do that?"

"I can do it." Yakob assured, exhaling slowly. He nodded again, this time more to himself than to Caelum. "I can. Ah, I go back in these clothes though, they'll know something sideways happened. No matter how healed up you've done me." Something almost like a smile twitched along his mouth as he looked into Caelum's face. "Which is real good. And appreciated."

The healer nodded and rolled back and around, canting his chin in invitation for Yakob to follow. A small stack of clothes was lifted from the counter, plain and serviceable, used more than a few times. He offered them out. "Change into these and head on out, Yakob."

"Yessir." Yakob cast a nervous glance at the kitchen door, shadows in his eyes, and then hastily stripped down. He kicked his blood stained clothes aside and climbed into the new ones. In short order, he was gone, sent out the side door and into the wind.

Caelum quietly collected the blood stained clothes for safe keeping as well as five hundred gold mizas from his lock box before carrying both with him out into the otherwise empty tavern to meet up with Evangeline. The heavy purse was offered her along with that wonderful, warm smile. "You were more than I could have hoped for, Evangeline. Thank you for your help. Please take this in payment for the service you've done me today, and as a starting bonus for what I hope to be a long and mutually beneficial relationship."

Such a Beautiful Thread . . .

... Wow. What a thread!

Seriously, I was a little weary about starting a grade for this thread, simply because of how established these characters are and how much I've heard of them around the site. I didn't want to mess up (and I'm still a little nervous about that), but I have absolutely no regrets in reading this. I was blown away. The contrast between these characters and the prose you guys put into it... Fantastic. I feel like I got to see a part of these characters I hadn't seen in the past, and got to know them more on a personal level.

It was full of wonderful surprises at every corner. With Evalin's history pouring from her (love the name Evangeline, by the way), to Caelum's secret hiding in the ice box. I mean, I wasn't expecting a torture victim, and the way you described his celestial name.. How stunning. You guys filled me with inspiration. As always, if I missed anything, please let me know via PM.

Anyway! Enough of me pouring praise on you. How about we get to that grade?
