Ven the Model
Summer 12th 514 AV, 19th Bell
Location: The Save Haven Hostel

How drab this place could seem when nighttime seemed to arrive, granted that Syna had gone down and Leth was no doubt the one to illuminate the world. Even so that still didn't do wonders for Toan seeing as how nighttime was his favorite part of the day, granted it used to be until he started to live here in Nyka. Of course his stay wasn't meant to be permanent but there was the consideration of what awaited him here, all he needed to do was find a respectable means of building a wonderful reputation and then the exciting part could finally happen. Pity that the night is filled with nastiness we don't want lurking about. He irked as he looked out the window before closing the curtain, he released a sigh then as he started to pace around the room while Ven started to stir.

There was but a stretch and loud yawn that escaped from the fox as he laid asleep in the makeshift bed Toan provided him, granted the few extra pillows were requested as a "luxurious comfort" on his part. He had yet to reveal the fact he had a new pet to the woman here, granted she already didn't seem overly fond of him to begin with. Toan took a seat at the small desktop table then, his sketchbook wide open with the latest practices he'd been working on. While he'd been getting down the forms of shapes and working on mastering the shading, his real efforts have been spent on the capturing of actual life down in the forms of real pieces of art. Granted Vanari was the only one he'd successfully tried that on, the drawing certainly didn't turn out quite as good as he imagined it would. Still all the same it resulted with him wooing her and in turn getting something out of it afterwards, so he couldn't really complain about the fact it served purpose in charming her in the end.

Alas the other forms of the art he sought weren't anywhere near as beautiful, quite the contrary they were rushed and failures because of how incomplete they proved to be. People in Nyka failed to realize that they generally needed to sit still really, and tended to prove a bit too fidgety to try and print into a piece of art. He needed something that would move him, inspire him to better create life. Something that wouldn't move around so much, and allow him to capture the essence he craved so he could better his work. There was a flash as Ven stood on two legs in his human form, his curiosity grabbed the better of him as he went over to peer at the artists rushed workings. "You spend every waking chime doing something with that book you know, just what exactly is it you're trying to accomplish anyway?"

"Perfection." He murmured as he contemplated the word. It was an ideal that he sought to have, a concept that escaped him every time he reached for it. Why that was so seemed to be beyond him, but it was by far the very thing that would allow him to carry out his real ambition. Recognition. "I wish to capture visual forms of life and reality, make them appear great so that those who appreciate art may recognize this ideal."

"I thought you had other plans... something you said to be a bit more exciting that this anyways." The Kelvic remarked as he moved over to the bed, with arms folded back he allowed himself to fall over on the mattress with a sigh, his spiritless sigh a sign that he was all but impressed with the situation.

"In good time dear boy, in good time." He mused as he glanced over at the Kelvic, a gentle smirk on his face as he still contemplated on finding what in this city could serve as his source for inspiration. Generally he enjoyed drawing women but that was because that tended to lead him elsewhere, if he ended up playing his cards right of course. So what exactly would allow him to draw inspiration just for its own source?

"You know," Toan looked to Ven once more as the boy seemed to turn over on his belly, "I don't really get you. You say all these things and yet nothing happens, however you say all in good time like it could happen anyways." He played with the fire from the candle then, his head craned on a hand while the fingers on his other hand fiddled with the smaller flame. "So if you're planning for something ahead, how's it going to happen when you sit around and fill that book of yours with drawings?" Toan felt his insides cringe just a bit, until he remembered that the boy was Kelvic, thus he probably didn't understand the importance of art just yet.

"It'll help me in the future if I can boast about it and have the necessary skill to back it up, after all it doesn't pay for one to be all talk and no proof to follow." He pointed out even though he could admittedly say otherwise, rumor and gossip could so easily play a heavy part in his reputation if he used it carefully. After all that was how names got around and he aimed to see his own do the same, just as he thought of this though the solution to his previous dilemma somehow appeared before his very eyes. While he would never have thought of it before, seeing Ven right now in his very own birthday suit as he played with the candle, that contained an essence of life Toan wanted to catch. And why not?! The boy was his pet and it would surely help him learn to appreciate the value of art, especially when ladies could ogle and adore the face of the Kelvic when they viewed such art.

That and... thinking of the possible income this could bring him, not that wealth mattered but it certainly would help advance his cause. Yes.. Ven was the perfect thing that would bring Toan's ambitions to fruition, he was the key that would help the artist find the source of inspiration.

Ven the Model

"What?" Ven asked curiously as he noticed that Toan had seemed to stare him down for a while, the artist of course merely brought up a hand to sign for him to remain still, as he captured the moment to the best of his abilities while the revelation finally settled in.

"Don't move!" He motioned as he looked at his sketchbook for a moment with a smirk, he grasped for it along with a piece of charcoal separately as he looked to Ven once more. "Continue playing with the fire as you were."

"Why? What for?" Ven's eyebrows furrowed in wonder as Toan situated his book and drawing utensils.

"For perfection!" He mused as he turned the seat a couple of times to where he faced Ven, the Kelvic rolled his eyes as he easily guessed what it was Toan would be doing next. Yet somehow when he looked back to the tiny flame on the candle, the smirk he held told Toan that he actually enjoyed it this time. Probably because it was him being recognized as a form of inspiration, which granted the fact Toan normally looked for females to draw, having a constant model to have around would better serve him than any temporary girl he aimed to woo. The artist started with the idea of filling in shadows but decided to outline the important details first, granted that it helped to have a form to follow before you went into the concept. Toan looked at the shape Ven's back was in, considered the natural curve that it took from the waist all the way to the shoulders and started there, and then filled in a few lines to mark the locations of his lower half as well as the ridges of the blanket from where he laid. Once he had a basic foundation of lines started off he went with the area of the background next, started where it was most darker and measured the amounts of light he could see before him.

I need not to focus on details of the shading entirely, not until I shade in the form of the body at least. He noted as he started from the far left of the page and worked his way over to the right, he decided to wait until later in the process to darken the areas that had lesser light once the whole background had its grayed areas. When that was done he started to further outline the area where Ven's head was, merely lightly marking out the areas where his hair gave form before most of the light hit it. Then the face came next as the area of the eyes was made with an flipped "C" curve that led to the bridge of the nose being drawn out, followed with another curve much sharper as the tip was given form and soon the mouth and chin followed in turn. The next area of focus on specifically on the source of light itself, in which Toan drew the candle alone more intently as he tried to consider the perspective of shadow after seeing Ven's hand behind it. It really amused him to watch the boy play with such a small thing, so tiny and yet still very volatile if one wasn't careful.

He pondered the hand for a chime or two all while Ven continued to play with it, the expression of the Kelvic showed simple amusement in how the flame itself seemed to dance near his finger tips. Once Toan finally got an idea in his head he started with only outlining the hand itself along with smaller curves created to make the finger tips, leaving the extra shading effort to be done later when he was finally closer to the brighter reaches of the page.

With the outline for the face and head done, the lines for the arms were made to connect them to the body, in turn creating a free handed outline of Ven's form as the background slowly appeared out of the construct of shadows before his very eyes. So far the sketch looked to be better than he imagined, given that he seemed to be taking the approach to this rather differently than most attempted drawings. Strangely though he figured it only had something to do with finding that sense of inspiration again, just as he did the other day when he managed to draw that Vanari girl in several chimes. The fact Ven was a more or less a pet and item that started to prove invaluable though, that all the more motivated Toan further as his inspiration could allow him to reach new heights. Heights he would no doubt be able to reach because he had the means of improving his technique!

The artist continued to shade in the reaches of the background from darker to lighter, in turn blending the areas with his index finger until that finally appeared to be finished. Now it was time to focus on Ven's own body, which the thief had to take several glances with each area he focused on when he started. The reaches where the feet were certainly proved most easy to blend into the darkness, however he didn't want to shade them in too much to where they wouldn't be so unrecognizable as shapes. He made sure to tread carefully with his finger as he smoothed the charcoal out in that region, in turn working his way along the legs and closer to the reaches where the thighs resided. "How much longer? I'm getting kinda tired of this." Ven sighed as his amusement seemed to dwindle a little.

"Almost there... Just, keep playing with the candle." Toan instructed as he continued to glance further at Ven's thighs and rear end, he had to elaborate on a few spots where light didn't seem to present itself as strongly. Mainly because due to the shape of course, but once really couldn't complain about that when the fun of the challenge was to capture such elements and make them create realism.

"The candles burnin low." He pointed out in a mutter as he looked at the flame distantly, his eyes began to look a little droopy as he buried his chin into the covers.

"Not much longer, I assure you." He stated as he continued further with the work, by now his charcoal tip had reached the point of Ven's back as he did simple light lines in a vertical manner, each having bare curves to generate a soft shadow effect as he went over them with his finger. Once the smudges had been made and the face came last, Toan looked closely at the areas that remained highlighted by the light. While it was only a side view the nose area had a slight shadow upon it as well as the reaches of the jawline near the ear, in turn when he reached the hair on the Kelvic's head he drew lines in sharper curls as they created highlights that in turn grew darker in certain aspects as he filled in the blank reaches of the head. Once the hair had finally been added in and shaded as well he finally focused on the last bit of detail left, which was in turn the facial features that Ven had. While the nose and lips looked to be outlined at the surface they'd yet to completely fill in the face, hence when he started at the eyes first and outlined them lightly as he glanced frequently between sketch and model to glimpse the structure of the face better.

Given that Ven had a more intent stare at the flame Toan made sure to draw the curves in the lines in a more soft relaxed manner, with the eyelids only slightly hovering over the eyes while they stared ever so deeply within the flame. Next came the nostrils of the nose as he carefully narrowed his lines around to fit the shape that he perceived in the light, all while the lips were sullen as they revealed the boy to be lost in a concentration of thought as he watched the ever glowing candle before him burn brightly. Finally came the point of filling in the shadows and in turn finishing the hand he held near the candle, the upper reaches where the light was blocked being filled along the arm carefully, while the palm of the fingertips were left untouched save for a few soft smudges from the gray above to give a bit of color to them. Finally he was done, the drawing had been completed. He sighed as he drew back in his chair, relieved to find that his inspiration had been satisfied with the effort put into it.

He had completed the first of many projects to come.

Additional Comments:

It's funny, I just graded another thread with an artist character and I told her I hadn't seen very many of those on the site. Then the very next thread is another artist, lol. Anyway, it's always interesting to see how people do art in their threads. Good job, I could really see the image on my mind. Keep it up!

Please remember edit your post in the request thread to say that it had been graded.
