Nostalgia.

There was something about the Proving Grounds that took Dor'gen back. As his long, confident strides bore him through the entrance of the establishment, his mind began to think on events of his past. Literal centuries ago, a young child of purple-skin began his training. He was plucked from his slumber during the earliest hours of the morning and practically dragged out of his clan's dwelling place. Dor'gen was taken to a training yard that was only a stone's throw away from where he laid his head; and for weeks upon weeks the process of his training began. That training yard, surrounded on all sides by the jungles of Falyndar, was a place where a mountain of fond memories were made. While many of them involved pain...they all revolved around time spent learning the craft that would save his life countless times in the future.

And the aptly-named Proving Grounds reminded the Akalak immensely of that training yard of old.

Despite the fact that the establishment was very obviously owned and operated by the Sun's Birth, it was open for the public to utilize. Lessons were offered at rather affordable rates; but the patrons also had the option of simply utilizing some of the equipment as well. Of course, there were a handful of persons who would be unable to access this fine place of personal growth. At the door, all were searched for the tell-tale signs of membership in the other syndicates which gallavanted about Sunberth. Tattoos were called into question, brands were investigated, and those that were deemed "okay" were free to pass. For Dor'gen, the experience of having his personal markings called into question was especially...awkward...but thankfully enough, there was not a gang in Sunberth who brandished the mark of Myri as their flag.

After being admitted within, the giant made his way onto the main "training floor" before allowing himself a moment to "take it all in." The stench of sweat was heavy in the air. A symphony of steel meeting steel, harmonized with spirited roars of battle, rang loudly across the space. Instructions were barked in menacing tones with affirmations being subsequently sounded in unison. All these things caused an immense grin to form upon the lips of the Akalak, for he was reminded of his own training yard yet again. He had spent so much time there that he immediately found comfort amongst the sights and sounds; unlike many of those who felt awkward during their first visit. Now, today, Dor'gen had not come to indulge himself in a class or to even test his mettle against some of the Sun's Birth. In fact, he didn't even come to the Proving Grounds to have a personal workout of any sort.

Today, his goal was to impart to someone deeply valued a few lessons in self-defense.

Ever since the day Lhex intertwined their destinies together, Dor'gen had scarce been able to get the beautiful woman out of his mind...not that he wanted to. Firenze, his beloved Kelvic, had managed to break down the walls surrounding his heart and capture the prize in a rather brief span of time. Her smile, her strength, her adoration...all of these things worked to chip away at the guard Dor'gen formerly held perpetually. She, unlike any other woman before, had awoken a desire within the Akalak that he had never felt before. Dor'gen desired to share every waking moment with his Firenze; and ever since the day of their Bonding, that desire was practically a reality. However, there were times when duty called and Dor'gen had to scamper off to make his mizas for the day.

And whilst he was away, worry plagued the depths of his soul.

He would never forget how he met Firenze. He would always remember how he had saved her life...and starting a relationship with mortal peril kindling to the flames of worry. Although he masked it well, Dor'gen often fretted about the wellbeing of his Kelvic whenever they were apart. His mind would assault him with gruesome images; demonstrating how the sordid nature of Sunberth could be unleashed upon that who he held most dear. Yet, this day, a change would occur. Today, Dor'gen fully intended to settle the worries of his troubled mind through the only means he knew how. As there was no way that he could be with his bondmate at all times, the only alternative was to prepare her for whatever the streets of Sunberth had in store.

To this end, he had instructed her to meet him at the Proving Grounds; but had personally arrived early in order to get things ready.

Before seeking out a suitable corner of the establishment to claim as their own, Dor'gen first made his way over to a wall populated with all manner of practice weapons. Of course, these were not free for public use...nor were they up for being rented either. One had to pay full price in order to use them, but they were also theirs to keep when it was said and done. Sweeping his gaze up and down the selection of armaments, the Akalak ultimately began by selecting a wooden version of his weapon of choice: the Bastard Sword. He then selected a smaller weapon for usage by Firenze: a practice Longsword. While the dimensions of these weapons were indeed different, Dor'gen knew full well that the basic mechanics of swordplay were the same.

And soon, he beloved would be well versed in them.

After shoveling out a small handful of coin, the Akalak strode off with both weapons in hand. Today, he appeared as a stark contrast to his usual, intimidating self...for he lacked armor, his shield, and even took the time to groom his hair into a ponytail. To say that being in love had an affect on Dor'gen was an understatement, for now he had begun to take his appearance into consideration immensely. He'd much rather appear handsome for her eyes when he was off-duty, as opposed to scary as all hai. A few ticks after purchasing the weapons, the Akalak came to a halt in an empty spot a good distance away from most of the "action." There, he stood, awaiting the arrival of Firenze. He wasn't concerned in the slightest that she'd miss him...

For he was the tallest petcher present.

Making her way toward the Proving Grounds Firenze smooth her tunic, nervous to see Dor'gen, she wanted to make sure that she looked okay even though she figured that they would be sweaty and worn out by the end of the day. Excited to see him again, per usual, her heart beat sped up in anticipation. She'd done a little training before but never with actual weapons and the thought of Dor'gen teaching her made it all the more exciting. She wanted to learn what he knew, she wanted to feel closer to him in every aspect of their lives.

Approaching the guard to the Proving Grounds, she showed him that she did not belong to any of the gangs of Sunberth and that she didn't have any tattoos that would signify that she might. Never having been inside the Proving Grounds before every sight and smell of the area was new to her. Swords clanged and men grunted, the stench of sweat and male permeated the air. After passing through a door, the training area laid out before her, she stopped and looked around. Men's swords sung through the air and clashed loudly, grunts coming loudly out of their mouths as they hefted the heavy metal back and forth. Others had shields and they used those to either cover themselves from an incoming blow or to knock their opponent off balance.

As she watched the men and women practicing she noticed in the corner her Akalak standing tall above the rest, a smile played on her lips and her heart picked up it's tempo to match the now quick pace of her feet as she made her way over to him. Approaching him she gave her greeting, "Dor'gen! How are you today?" She noticed that he had two different size swords with him and wondered if they were going to be using them. She noticed that they were quite a distance from the rest of the calamity and actually preferred it so that the other more capable swordsmen and women would not see her foolishly fumbling around with a sword.

Placing her arms on his biceps, avoiding the weapons that he held aloft in his hands, she lifted herself up on her tip toes and planted a kiss on his lips. "So, what are we going to do today?" Stepping back she let her eyes rove over the weapons in his hands, one larger and heavier looking the other not quite as large and slightly slimmer. She hoped that he was going to have her use the smaller one because she wasn't sure that she could swing the bigger sword around. Fire knew that he could probably use it with ease, but she was not as strong as him yet.

Rubbing her hands together, she licked her lips and waited to see what Dor'gen's plans were for their training.

Due to the fact that the Kelvic's appearance was not an instantaneous occurrence, the towering Akalak found himself with a few chimes of "free" time. For the most part, he was simply a stoic fixture in the rear of the establishment; silent and unmoving. Ironically enough, Dor'gen was currently a stark contrast to all that which occurred around him. Where he was quiet, the combatants were loud...ridiculously so. Where he was stationary, the combatants moved and weaved in deadly dances all about. In those moments, the differences between the Akalak and those training all about him were numerous...but there was a single trait which they simultaneously displayed. Together, Dor'gen and those attempting to sharpen their skills observed.

Whether it was an opponent racing ever forward, or simply watching how one of the duels turned out, everyone in the Proving Grounds was observing something.

However, as the chimes rolled by, the Akalak's observations centered around one particular area of the establishment. Although he had a love of combat and enjoyed watching warriors test their mettle against one another, there was another matter which claimed his attention all the more. Being the "worry wart" that he was, Dor'gen began to fret over the fact that his Firenze had yet to show her beautiful face. With each passing tick, the worry wormed its way into the pit of his stomach, causing a sensation of absolute dread to wreak his body. In fact, the worst question in the world reared it's ugly head in the rear of Dor'gen's mind...before repeating itself, over and over and over again. With each repitition, the feeling of dread only magnified...until the palms of the Akalak moistened with sweat.

What if?

Those two words were the preamble to a tsunami of worry. What if Firenze was mugged? What if she got lost? What if...she was taken advantage of...All these inquiries grated against the fortitude of the Akalak to a point where he was surprised. Never before had he cared for someone so deeply that he'd worry himself sick. However, the Kelvic that he had opened his heart to was most precious to him. So much so that moments without her presence caused him to think about all that could possibly go wrong...and in Sunberth, that was a lot. However, before the sensation of dread could cause the Akalak to have a heartattack, Lhex would have it that Firenze finally arrived. The doors of the Proving Grounds gave way with a slight creak, and in stepped the most stunning woman in Dor'gen's world.

He noticed her as soon as she arrived...as did a handful of the nearest combatants.

While most of the Proving Grounds' occupants were wholly focused on their training, this particular lot were taking a break from beating the tar out of each other. Seated in a rough semi-circle, they immediately noticed the arrival of the Kelvic...and sounded their appreciation. There were cat-calls and derogatories hurled out without so much as a care in the world...but they soon learned their mistake. Striding forth only a few paces, Dor'gen came to a halt just before the gaggle of animals that dare address his Firenze in such a manner. Impaling the earth with the longsword meant for Firenze, he took a moment to hold the practice bastard sword aloft; as if debating whether or not to strike. His fangs were bared, his brow was furrowed, and Dor'gen seemed ready to kill.

This shut up the peanut gallery nay instantaneously, for none of the men wanted to try their hand at fighting a giant.

Satisfied, the Akalak returned the whole of his attention to the woman quickly approaching...and all his wrath melted away. All it took was a smile, and his heart began to soar. All it took was her touch, and his lips curled into an enamored grin. At first, she greeted him with an inquiry of how he was doing this day. Yet, before he could so much as part his lips to answer, her hands were upon his forearms. She stepped up upon her tip-toes and graced his lips with a gentle kiss. This, however, was not enough for the Akalak. His free arm coiled about her waist whilst he leaned down, allowing his lips to crush down upon her own. Savoring the moment, Dor'gen allowed a tick or two to pass before he broke the kiss; beaming all the same.

"I'm doing great, now that you're here." he said, turning away for a moment. Reaching out, he retrieved the practice longsword from the earth before he set about answering the big question. At once, his tone changed. The romantic, loving tone of Dor'gen was shelved and replaced with that of the man who had served in the Taloban Army for centuries. There was authority behind this tone, but not enough to be intimidating by any stretch of the imagination. "Today, I'm going to teach you how to survive this city." he said, motioning for her to follow. Turning, he then lead her a good distance away from the "peanut gallery" before coming to a halt and facing her once more.

"This." he began, raising the practice longsword. "Is a Longsword. It is a one-handed weapon and is one of the most common swords you'll see in this world. Being that it's wooden, you'll be able to learn the key concepts without wearing yourself out too much. However, when you're ready, I'll expose you to the real thing. Now then..." As the words formed and fell from his lips, Dor'gen reached out. His fingers gently touched her hands before depositing the hunk of wood within her grasp. "As a contrast, this is my weapon of choice. A bastard sword. It's bigger and better suited for one my size." he said, indicating his own weapon of choice. "Now what I want you to do is hold your sword like this."

At that point, Dor'gen held his bastard sword aloft for her to clearly see. The fingers of his right hand were coiled about the center of the hilt firmly, an act which gave him quite a large sum of control over the blade. "Now then, give it a couple swings." he said, before backing up a step. "...And I am the target. Don't worry about accidentally hitting me, okay?" With that said, Dor'gen readied his bastard sword and awaited the onslaught of his beloved. Through this, he would be able to observe how she swung instinctively so that he might begin to correct her form. Of course, to Firenze, this might all amount to blindly swinging a wooden sword at the love of her life!

76 Fall 514 AV

The caterwauling and names thrown at Firenze from the men that were nearby had fallen on deaf ears, in that moment Fire had only eyes and ears for the man towering next to her. She only noticed them once he had glanced toward them. She didn't mind that they were behaving silly, being the men of Sunberth that they were, as long as they didn't try to touch her. Fire felt that if they had gone any further then calling out then Dor'gen would've reacted appropriately, the look on his face as she had approached confirmed this thought.

Once she'd laid her lips against his he wrapped his arm around her, continuing the kiss. A smile played on her lips as she stepped back and watched him as he spoke, "I'm doing great, now that you're here." He turned and grabbed the large sword that was near him, sticking out from the ground. After she asked her question of what they were going to be doing he replied, "Today, I'm going to teach you how to survive this city." This was exactly what she needed and she knew it, she wondered for a moment if he knew it too. She loved that he always seemed to know what was best for her or what she needed, even if she herself didn't know at the time.

He motioned for her to follow and she did as he asked, willing to follow him anywhere, even if it was into the thick of a battle and she was ill equipped, knowing that he would know best what to do. She felt it, her deep seeded trust for him, it was almost a physical thing, she felt and believed in it so strongly.

He explained the large sword that he held in his hand and she watched him move it as if it were something so natural that he didn't even have to think about it. He handed her the smaller of the wooden swords, showing her how to wrap her hand around the hilt of it.

Then he began explaining the other wooden sword that he was holding, it was a bastard sword and it was his preferred choice. She could see why, it seemed somewhat dwarfed in his hand, where she figured that if she were holding it it might be slightly overwhelming. The smaller of the two swords rested in her clenched fingers, it's weight letting her know that it was still there. She wondered for a moment how much more an actual metal sword would weigh in comparison to the one she currently had.

He held the bastard sword up so she could inspect it closer, letting her get a better look at it, then moved it swiftly again. She tried to mimic his finger placement on the hilt of his sword with her own, it felt some what unusual and foreign in her grasp, unaccustomed to the feeling of it.

"Now then, give it a couple swings." This made her pause for a tick, he wanted her to actually try to use it? "...And I am the target. Don't worry about accidentally hitting me, okay?" This had her worried, he wanted her to swing her sword at him... "O-okay. Are you sure?" She bit her lower lip, glancing down to the sword resting at her side. She lifted it up, the weight of it making her forearm and bicep flex tightly.

A heat flushed across her face, she wanted to show him that she could be good at wielding a sword too, but she was worried that her technique would be vastly poor compared to his. She looked to the sword and then back up to the giant Akalak, Well, here goes nothing. She swung the sword to the right, her hand following the weight, trying to get the hang of the balance. It wobbled precariously back and forth, almost as if she were trying to wiggle the sword.

After getting the feel of the longswords weight she pulled it back away from her, her arm extended out, and then swung it around, not even hard enough to cause the normal woosh as it parted the air around it's wooden blade. Laughing softly at herself, thinking of how foolish she must look, she tried it again. This time she swung the opposite way, the sword starting near her body and swinging away, trying to put a little more power into it she swung harder, this time it swooshed lightly and banged into Dor'gen's side, "Oh goodness! I'm sorry!"

She dropped the sword to her side and ran over, pulling the side of his shirt up so that she could inspect where she'd struck him, trying to make sure that she hadn't left a mark. "I don't know how hard that was, but did I hurt you?" She asked her head tilted to the side, trying to peek under his shirt. She did want to check him to make sure that she hadn't done anything, but she also didn't mind that she got to touch him again.
