The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

Winter 37, 514

He hugged his arms to his body, wrapping his cloak around himself tighter once more. The night was bitter cold, the stars in the clear skies above defying the darkness of space, acting as rebels in the never ending war of bringing light to the dark. Syna had retired hours ago, leaving Leth to conquer the sky. On this particular night the moon was more prominent than normal, a complete circle that shined down brightly in an even tone across the city. It was nights like these that Shamus felt closest to the ethereal man that had marked him years ago.

The braziers hanging down from the ceiling offered a bit of heating, but not enough to keep Shamus from shivering that made the whole counter vibrate as he propped himself up by an elbow, eyes half closed. It was near torture, his shift had ended bells ago yet he knew he had more work to do, even with Tian off doing things of her own. Getting the job had been easy, it was keeping it that proved difficult.

Soon after he had been hired Tian discovered he was a people person and good salesman. Shamus knew he was not being kept because of his philtering skills. So he had to do his best each and every day to sell the strange philters and offer to make something unique for every customer that walked through the door, for meeting the expected amount of sales was a necessity so long as he wanted to gain kina and philtering experience. Sadly that meant staying after hours occasionally, even when he longed for a good drink.

He counted the kina in the coffer, realizing he only needed one more sale to meet the expected quota for the day. This was definitely not a sale he would loose. A ray of Leth's glow shined in through the doorway, falling across Shamus' face and reminding him to stay calm and collected.

He realized to make himself as presentable as possible it would be a necessity to be wide awake. Shamus set the small sign reading 'yell if you need someone' on the polished wood counter and turned, swaying slightly with fatigue as he walked back to the storage room. Sure, his mind was sharp, but his body was exhausted. He needed a burst of energy, and knew a simple way to do so would be in the store room.

At the pace of a snail he crept into the storage room, on both sides of him countless crates, bottles, and ingredients. To some it may have seemed random, borderline chaos, but by now Shamus knew where to go. First he walked to the ingredients section, which was a long isle of crates and apothecary chests. Then, to the end of the row, where fresh ingredients were stored. From there it was the right side of the isle, due to the product being edible. He quickly found a crate labeled berries. Taking off the rough wooden lid carefully, to avoid splinters from the unfinished slab, he looked inside.

The crate was stuffed with jars of berries of fabulous colors. Small red spheres glistening like rubies in the sun filled one jar, while soft squished purple berries with black juice covering them inhabited another. There were fruits of all colors, but the jar he took out was one of the few with berries inside as blue as the ocean. He popped out the cork lid, reaching his hand in and taking a small scoop of the plump sapphire colored fruit. Placing the cork lid back on, as well as the crate lid, he headed back to the counter, a bit of sweet juice pooling in his cupped hand.

With each berry he popped in his mouth he felt slightly more rejuvenated, the brinetooth was working. The trek down the hallway no longer seemed like a marathon of a thousand miles. Now all he needed was for someone to walk through the petching door.

IN THE STREETS

It had been a petch of a long workday at Lucis and Lucis and although Ornea truly loved her job, she was content to call it a day and walk home. The winter wind was unforgiving when she walked over the bridge from Shinyama to Zinthia.

She was wearing her Lhavitian winter clothes. The sheepskin coat, the katinu which, was made for the even colder winters of Wind Reach. This and the wide brimmed black hat of wool, a knitted blue and green scarf, fur brimmed leather gloves and a pair of winter boots kept her warm enough, for Inarta standards.

The winter sky above was dark and full of stars and the moon was shining. It was a beautiful evening, but Ornea walked without thinking much about it, her whole being closed against the cold that surrounded her. The traffic on the bridge was low this time of the evening and she was nearly alone there.

She passed through the northern bridge abutment of Zinthia peak and continued past Cosmos Center. For a chime or two she thought of staying on the lower city tier, walk along the trail of waterfalls and find her way up to Solar Wind Apartments farther down the trail. She decided against it though, and instead she went directly op the broad stairway to Suraya Plaza where the atmosphere was somewhat lively despite the time and the cold. There were maybe a bit fewer people around than in the warmer seasons, but there were people, most of them wearing the dark winter clothes that made all the citizen’s look the same, at least at a distance. The plaza was far from empty.

Lhavit never went to sleep. The Inarta had learnt this by now. There were people who were busy in the days, and she guessed they mostly slept at night, just like Ornea mostly did. But there were also people who seemed to wake up around dusk break and give the city an infusion of new fresh activity right when day ended and night begun. The city was alive night and day, although the city by night struck her as different from how it was in daytime.

It was like another world, Lhavit by night, bioluminescent and tantalizing.

Ornea had heard that Lhavit by night could actually also be dangerous sometimes. But she hadn’t seen much of that side of the city. There had been a few nights out, like when she had dinner with an Inarta endal in Shooting Star Inn at the beginning of the fall, and there were other places she had visited in evening time. She had also walked to and from the Observatory after dark. But nothing unusual had happened at those occasions, and most evenings she had only went home, tired after her long workdays as metalsmith. She had washed and relaxed, had something to eat, and went to bed in time to get sleep and renew her energy for next workday.

Now, as she walked, she was thinking of yet another evening like this at home, just as usual. The night life of Lhavit would need to wait until she got some days off. Days off? She knew other people in the city had days off, but she couldn’t know if this would ever happen to her, with a boss like Edward Lucis. Edward loved his gadgeteering and he didn’t see any reason for taking boring days off from the best things in life. It didn’t seem to have occurred to him that his metalsmith and now also gadgeteering trainee would feel differently, or want to spend time away from Lucis.

At the side of the Suraya Plaza she saw the entrance to the Azure Market. And although it was cold and she was on her way home, she decided stroll in the market for a while, for easy entertainment. She wanted to see something else than Lucis and Solar Winds this evening, but was too tired to want to visit a tavern. The Azure Market was perfect. She entered and walked into the blue maze of paths and shops.

AT THE STARRY CHALICE

Passing by an open shop door she stopped to glance at the sign : The Starry Chalice.

The sign also told Ornea this shop had philters for sale. She stood in the cold night outside, partly in the moonlight painted a way into the shop. When she looked into the shop she could see a Lhavitian clerk in a dark cloak among the wares.

The Inarta couldn’t say why, but as she stood there, the shop started to seem exceptionally inviting and alluring, and nearly felt like it was whispering to her to step in, come in. Suddenly it seemed irresistible. Exited and with the odd feeling of entering not just a shop, but a wonderful treasure chamber full of amazing surprises and fantastic treats, the Inarta stepped in.

She would only have a look at the shop and the things in there, she told herself. She wasn’t going to buy anything, just look around. The shop had caught her interest for a moment and she would have a brief look at it just to familiarize herself with what they sold there. Just for fun. Just because she had the time. Just because it had suddenly felt so pleasant to do it. Why not. It couldn’t hurt.

Now when she was here, she recalled old stories she had heard about philters, stories mostly told during her childhood and yasi years, about potions that could achieve everything people could imagine, and some things beyond imagination too. This thought made her smile, as some of those stories had been really absurd, like the one about the invisibility potion, not to mention the elixir of truth and the oil of forgetfulness.

Oh Ivak, how her thoughts has started to wander! Best to keep an eye on herself in order to avoid annoying experiences of getting distracted and dreamy. She would really just have a brief look at this place before she continued home to her apartment in The Solar Winds...hey, why even a brief look, what had she been thinking, she ought to skip this and just go home !

Ornea was already on the brink of turning to step out of the shop again ...

He saw the vibrant red hair before he saw her face. Her features were sharp and well defined, her cheekbones high on her face. The neutral grey green eyes stood out from the bright fiery hair, making them pop even with their calm hue. She was shorter than most, but certainly not tiny, especially considering that the frailness that some of the women of Lhavit possessed was nonexistent. She was obviously a very strong woman.

His bright gold eyes met hers, a casual smile forming on his face as he straightened himself up. Knowing that height could intimidate others he stayed in a slouch, giving himself only an inch or two more height than she had. The scented lavender fog fell down from the braziers above, giving the whole room a slightly dream like appearance.

Shamus saw her glance back out the door, and it became clear that she intended to leave. This was not something he could allow. His hand moved slowly from the counter towards him, as if in a pulling motion. The small movement was an attempt at subliminal messaging, to get her to come closer. He pulled his gaze away for a moment, gathering djed before connecting stares again, his defining essence flowing towards her with the goal to set the mood correctly. Shamus needed her to calm down, to relax.

It was a simple tactic, easily squashed by his target, but not invasive enough to raise more than an eyebrow. After all, it was simply setting up for his next set of tactics. He broke the gaze to avoid making her uncomfortable, "can I interest you in anything? Anything at all? Your wildest dreams may be in stock," he fueled the words with his djed and a soft smile, reaching out to her to create a single sudden thought, yes.

He beckoned her closer with another pulling motion, reaching under the counter and taking out a small assortment of colorful bottles and a jar, opening the jar and pushing it in front of her. Judging by her rough calloused hands, the scented mint lotion he had put in front of her would be an enticing product. "It will keep your hands smooth, no matter what it is up against," he assured her.

With the words he stared into her eyes again, attempting to add another subtle layer of relaxing aura to her, hoping to relax a possible stony grip on her kina. He did his best to look charming, teeth barely peeking out in his small smile.

Ornea was unable to resist the sudden need to walk deeper into the shop and have a look at the products the clerk wanted to show her. And oh, wasn’t he a nice chap, this young man with the pleasant smile and the golden eyes !

In fact, she could maybe use a hand lotion. She always used gloves when she worked with hot metal and nearly always when she shuffled coal in to the furnace. But her hands were bare when she did the cold metal work and the cleaning in the foundry. This mean she had a working woman’s calloused hands, with short nails, the skin a bit chapped sometimes.

Ornea hadn’t thought so much about it. She had been a metalsmith for years. In Wind Reach she had crafted smaller things, but now when she was working at Lucis she made machinery parts and used coal and wood fires and the work was often heavier, dirtier and her hands were getting worse these days...when she was offered to buy a good hand lotion she actually felt a bit interested.

Besides it felt like she wanted to have a look at it, irrationally, for the sake of it. The lotion seemed promising !

Yes, she found herself thinking in response to the clerks selling words about her wildest dreams coming true. Yes. Her wildest dreams ...

“Maybe...” she said.

His words seemed to echo in her mind. Your wildest dreams may be in stock, yes...yes...yes! This thought had already started to trigger a multitude of dreams in the Inarta’s overgiving injured mind where dreamy sidetracks were the staples, only waiting to be set in motion by what stimuli they could find to fuel them ! The process had already started and a question bounced around in there: what exactly were her wildest dreams?

Magic, answered the sweet whisper, before she stood a chance to stop it. Magic ! In her inner vision, the memories of past fire reimancy started to glow with a speed and force she would normally have found alarming and quenched at first sign of it. But now, with her wildest dreams on their way to take wing - yes, yes, yes, yes - it just seemed fascinating to no end.

Your wildest dreams may be in stock !

Dreamily, she reached into her djed.

Your wildest dreams...

The clerk had said something and she had held her hand out, maybe to test the lotion. But in the palm of her hand a thin stream of res came out and with an absentminded feeling of long forgotten dreams coming true, she formed the res to a small ball no bigger than a doves egg and once it was shaped she threw it up into the air and ignited it. A small explosion of fire was suddenly burning in the air between her and the shop clerk.

Ornea came out of her dreamlike state of mind with a jolt, shocked at what she was doing. It had been a very small use of fire reimancy, but oversensitive as she was, she could feel a headache incoming. And in addition, it was illegal to use magic for the sake of it and out in the streets, and she had an unpleasant feeling this little fireshot, small as it had been, came very close to breaking the law. She hadn’t seen how the clerk had reacted to the sudden use of reimancy in his shop. But in case he had been offended and was thinking of calling for the shinya, she decided to try to distract him and make him think of something else.

Your wildest dreams can be in stock. Yes ... your wildest, wildest dreams!

“That was a miniature firework egg” she told him. “We make them at Lucis and Lucis. Brand new product. We have many fun things in store at Lucis, but I guess you know that already. It’s actually possible to create all sorts of things with gadgeteering, and one day in the future there will be...machines that can fly in the sky, machines that can dive down to the bottom of the oceans, and great balloons...in the far, far future that is, but there will come a day...”

She realized she was rambling wildly and had gone off on another dreamtrack, hitherto unknown to herself, but now suddenly flooding her with diffuse visions inspired of all the contact she had with Edward Lucis. Only dreams and odd delusions; outrageous visions of Edwards’s wackiest drawings coming alive.

Dreams, dreams, yes, dreams.

“You know what?” she said to the golden eyed clerk, whose eyes seemed to have grown bigger by the tick while she was speaking. “I’ve heard a lot about interesting philters. There’s some really good ones.”

She started to tell him the story about the invisibility exlixir. She told him the story about an endal who visited the master philterer, and how the elixir was crafted (this part was vague as the story had never clarified how it had been crafted). And then she told him how the endal drank the elixir, intending to spy on her chiet lover, to find out if it was true that he was cheating on her, as rumor had it. She went on to describe how the elixir had turned out to have an unexpected side effect, as it actually didn’t just make the endal in this story invisible and left her body intact, it also transformed her to a ghost! ”

She stopped there, suddenly aware that she was once again rambling on, now telling yasi stories about passion, jealousy, possession, crime and more. This stuff was hardly suitable to pester a pleasant shop clerk in Lhavit with.

“Anyway” she said hastily. “I guess you don’t have invisibility elixir? But if you have it, I may want to buy a vial of it, depending on the prize. “ She changed topic: “What is this hand lotion you were speaking about?”

There. She had stopped going astray in dreams. Relief ! But it was also odd how she had all of a sudden totally drifted away. It was odd actually, as she didn’t use to be this scatterbrained even when she lost focus. But, from now on she would keep an eye on herself !

He could not read her, and it scared him. She seemed to be present, but her stare was blank and mouth half open. Would it be rude to snap his fingers in front of her face a couple times? he pondered, deciding against it when she finally moved to hold her hand out, to receive the lotion he was offering, or so he thought. Maybe she is just slow. Slow but willing to pay, he hoped.

His fingers made a small scoop, bending at his upper finger joint to make the spoon-like hand position. He reached into the creamy substance the hair on his arms standing up at the initial chill of mint on his skin, but quickly laying back down obediently. Only when his eyes turned away from the jar and back to the woman in front of him did he notice her move her arm upward in a quick tossing motion. Confused, he looked up into the air to see if there was something he had missed. It was then that he was greeted by a burst of warmth against his face.

"What the petch," he muttered under his breath as he instinctually recoiled back, foot hitting the chair behind the counter and nearly tripping himself. Stabilizing himself involved lots of thrashing arms and knocking over the same chair that nearly tripped him. With a great amount of effort he finally returned to a stable stance, looking into the air and noticing the ball of flame was gone. Did she just use riemancy, or I am going insane?

It did not help him assure himself of his sanity when she went on to provide a very brief explanation of what she called a "firework egg", and Shamus could feel the amount of bogus that it was. There had not been anything there, and then there was an fiery explosion in the air. Riemancy was like that.

She quickly moved on to the marvels gadgeteering could create, to which he just gave a small smile and bobbed his head up and down politely. Now Shamus had decided that she had used riemancy for sure, seeing as the delusional thoughts he had just been told about could only come from someone who had overgiven. Shamus would give her something for that. He would have to look into it further, seeing as of now the red head was jabbering of fables, which only became interesting when she mentioned a invisibility philter. Not surprisingly, Shamus had looked into the idea thoroughly.

In fact, he had worked with a past apprentice to utilize the gift of his partner to create something that did touch into invisibility. Show her. Make her awed by the skill of the philters that the shop can produce. "Invisibility is something many customers come looking for. As of now, we are still developing methods to grant it. Let me show you something."

He turned, unlocking a wooden cupboard behind him with his shop key and opening it. Inside were dozens of philters, all experimental and for show only. Not for sale, period, as Tian liked to say. No harm in showing off a bit though. He reached for a tinted green glass jar, remembering what the effects had been last time he accessed it. As he opened the jar no smell came out, and the contents were simply black. But not just black, it was like space, lightness.

Shamus reached a finger in, taking it out and examining it. What he examined was no longer the flesh colored pudgy piece of his hand, it was now simply dark. Black. A near unreachable color in the world, most things were simply dark brown, but this was lightless. He cupped his hand above the finger to create a dark shadow, and the finger underneath was nearly not visible underneath. He beckoned the woman to look, explaining the strange effect, "it is actually a shield, the kind mages use, that blocks out the light. If you were to go out at night coated in this, you would be near invisible. Wouldn't even get your clothes dirty, for unlike paint, it deteriorates to nothing after awhile." He closed the jar, putting it back in the wood cupboard and locking it again, "we are still experimenting, so not for sale. Yet."

Hopefully the darkness that coated his finger would not be for nothing, it was impossible to get off no matter how hard he washed his hands. It came off when the shield deteriorated enough to no longer block the light, he assumed. "Ah yes, the lotion. Go ahead and try it if you will," he moved it closer to her side of the counter, then remembered that she had most likely overgiven," we also sell pain killers, sleep aids, and any other practical things you may need." As he spoke, djed began to drip off of his words, working itself into his customers mind before manifesting in a piercing thought, "buy something."

Buy Something. Buy something now. [Ornea]

.

It really felt like she ought to try that lotion! Feeling a bit dreamy and distracted, Ornea chalked this up to the unfortunate surprise use of reimancy and decided to do something practical in order to keep the distractedness at bay. It always used to help to do something practical. There was no hard work around for her in this philter shop, but there were still something she could do instead of just standing there like a fool.

She poured a few drops of the lotion on her left hand and rubbed it into the skin with the fingertips of her right hand. It felt soft, cool and soothing and the pleasant fresh scent of mint served to wake her up from her dreamy state, just like fresh could air or water can sharpen people’s senses. She regained enough of her awareness to realize that she had been drifting.

The insight sent her heart racing. She told herself to relax. She might have experienced a short loss of attention. But now she felt convinced she knew what she was doing again. She was just going to calm down think things through, she though to herself. Stay calm. Think. Act in a composed and well organized way. Now where was I, before this digression ...

Buy something, buy something, buy something, buy...
Buy something, buy something, buy...
Buy something, buy...
Buy...

She had tried to pick up where she had left off, but A compulsive, irresistible need of buying something had started to made itself felt. This thought bounced around in Ornea’s mind, ricocheting wildly, cutting off and interrupting any other line of thought as soon as is started. She tried to focus and recall what it was she wanted and set up a plan for what she would do. But she didn’t get anywhere. Her thoughts seemed to just go around in circles and before she knew it she was back to where she had started.

Her mind hadn’t been spinning this badly for seasons. She had started to feel safe. Stable.

But now it seemed like old overgiving reactions were coming back all of a sudden.

Ornea felt a feeling of helpless panic. As the lotion had helped the first time and she recalled this, she automatically grabbed it, poured a decent amount of it, and smeared it all over both hands. There was a lot of lotion. She smeared it down over the wrists and her lower arms, pushing the sleeves of her shirt up a bit in the process. The cooling and soothing sensation on her hands was intensely strong and the crisp mint scent was pervasive.

The orgy in mint lotion jerked her back to her right mind again and she drew her breath, trying to compose herself.

Ivak. What am I ... I’ll have to buy this lotion now, but never mind, who knows how much I will need of it in the days to come ... it was so little reimancy I used, next to nothing, no more than a dove's eggs worth of res, and still I react to it this much, not just the headache, but also getting confused in a way I haven’t been since last winter ... it’s nearly one year ago, and I was under the impression I was better, so how can it be this bad again, suddenly...

And there her thoughts broke and scattered again, like when a water surface that is clear and still as mirror one moment starts to ripple when a stone hits it. Splash! And once again the need of buying something spread over her mind like concentric waves and blended with the vague throbbing headache of light overgiving. The scent of mint was still very sharp though, and it heightened her attention and allowed her to cling to her focus with stubborn Inarta endurance this time. By sheer willpower (and a touch of fear) she held on to her attempts to think clearly, feeble as they were. She wasn’t going to give in! She was set on enduring this attack of assumed overgiving reactions at all cost. In order to do it she needed to focus on something. She focused on her own overwhelming need ot buying something, as this was the strongest of the thoughts she could find inside her, nearly the only lasting thought even, a real sticky ...

Buy something, buy something, buy something, buy...
Buy something, buy something, buy...
Buy something, buy...
Buy...

The more she focused on this thought the clearer it resounded inside her. And the more it seemed odd. Why would she think like this at all? Ornea was from Wind Reach where people didn’t spend so much money but though of the collective, the people, as the main owner of all assets, rather than the individual Inarta. She was normally not a big spender, and it was unusual, and even unnatural that she would suddenly itch to buy something, without even knowing what to buy or why.

She felt like she could use everything the clerk had mentioned. Painkillers, mint lotion, something to put her to sleep so she could rest and not need to deal with this weirdness that had come over her.

Buy something, buy something, buy something, buy...
Buy something, buy something, buy...
Buy something, buy...
Buy...

These words, which she was now getting really familiar with was going on repeat in her thoughts like a song. “I’m feeling a bit dizzy” she said to the clerk. She wanted to gloss over her behavior with the lotion, so she tried to go back to the other topic, the invisibility elixir in development. “That elixir was impressive” she said sincerely. “I want to buy it ! But what about your hand? How long will it stay that way?”

Ornea was no philterer, but she was creative, and working with Edward Lucis had made her used to try to solve problems and test her ideas. Edward liked this. At Lucis and Lucis it was totally right. She didn’t hesitate to act once the idea struck her : the mint lotion had been good for her hand and also cleared away a lot of mental obscurity. Perhaps it would fix the clerk's obscured hand too. “I have an idea” she said heartily. “Give me your hand! I want to buy it ... I mean,I want to try this lotion on it.”

This said, she would attempt to grab the clerks hand, pour a generous amount of mint lotion on it and start to rub it in energetically in the hopes of curing him instantly. She reached out for him already, and it remained to see if the clerk was going to cooperate or if he would decline the innovative mint cure.

Buy something, buy...
Buy...
