Shielding and Glyphing

Postby Lazuhly on March 24th, 2015, 2:57 pm

Having read the Lore a few times now I was left with a question concerning shielding and mundane items after receiving information that only magic items can be placed into a glyphed focus.

The answer while helpful unfortunately led me to another question when it came to the focus glyphs. I have also search functioned this question to no avail.

So I would like a chance at asking the community about shields on mundane items.

For example a shielded container does the glyph absorb the shield and expel the ordinary wooden container?

And then lastly if the container does travel into the focus, can a mundane item be stored inside the magic container? Maybe coins or a book something of that nature.

Magic seems to leave me with more questions then answers sometimes and I'd like to have things in order before I proceed with imaginative concepts.

Shielding and Glyphing

For this one I'll refer you to the shielding lore, under vulnerabilities and restrictions, but it specifically says that shields themselves cannot be stored in a glyph since they most be layed over/upon something. And only objects of a magical nature which could already be stored in a glyph could be stored with a shield over them, thus storing the shield.

So if you shield a mundane item, like a stick or a person, it doesn't allow you to store it in a focus glyph.

The same goes for other items of a mundane base, even ones infused with magic, since they are not truly djed constructs. Only djed, or djed constructs can be stored in a glyph. So say infusing a item with magic such as animation, or malediction, or even Magecrafting, wouldn't make that item inherently magical and able to pass through into a focus.

This is because the base item is mundane. Spells of personal magic being totally djed based, can be stored, but having magic being cast upon it doesn't make the item itself at its base magical and then storable in a focus.

However if by some stretch you did manage to shield a magical construct, such as say... A box/chest made completely out of stone transmuted through Reimancy, and thus a completely magical construct, then you could shield it and then store the stone container of transmuted res with the shield about it in the focus. But then even if the shield wasn't there, it still could have been stored in a focus.

However if you had mundane items inside said container, since it isn't magical, it would not be able to pass within the focus, and it would likely cause the item to be rejected or some such thing. A magical vessel does not let a mundane item within it pass into a focus.

So you can only store purposed djed within glyphs.

Hope that clears it up. If not, I'd be happy to clarify anything or help with any follow up questions.
Clydes Stuff

I am actually in RL a super intelligent hamster from Rhode Island, with a 7 year plan to take over the world.

Update 6/2/18- 1:10AM EST: His 7 year plan a success, and several weeks ahead of schedule, Clyde leaves to oversee the world he has taken over.

No new threads after end of Spring 518-Will still be checking for PM's occasionally, but focusing on a new character.

Graders note: :
Please be aware Clyde is a master Magecrafter. He therefore should not be gaining full xp(or possibly shouldn't gain any at all) for simple tasks related to this magic, such as low level MC items, particularly for repetitions of creations he has done before. Feel free to contact me if unsure of a instance of his magic use compared to his skill level.

Thank you so much for this, I'm grateful you took the time to write me this.

And no that wont be necessary, this was very insightful and answered my question with crystal clarity.

Albeit I am just a hair embarrassed I missed that in the shielding lore.

But now that I have the information I need, I am now capable of proceeding forward in engineering some concepts.

So, then what about items with gnosis marks? For example the money in Miz bears the mark of Xyna, right? Could you store those kind of items in glyphs or not?
