30th day, summer, 515 a.v.
18h bell
Endrykas

Camile, the Silkena, was well adapted to the heat. The Drykas did not suffer the heat very well, not this kind of heat. The evening breeze that flowed in around the eighteenth bell woke her up out of the heat induced stupor that plagued all of Endrykas. The breeze was not really that cool, but moving air was better than nothing. She had left tent flaps up to encourage breeze ways. Looking through one of these tent flaps, she saw her Strider, Shetanae dozing in the shade as she should be. The young lady got up to check on water for the horse and the dog. The girl did this before getting a drink of luke warm water herself.

The morning had been fruitful and the scraps of hide she had butchered horridly to clean the rabbit the girl had to do something with. She didn't want to waste anything. The head was stuffed with a bunch of grass and the scraps of hide while fresh was strapped around a ball of grass. The girl fastened this all together with hemp rope. It looked awful and definitely nothing like a rabbit. It was meant to be a training lure, thing. The rabbit meat had been stripped from the bones and then sliced as thin as she could get it and the strips laid out, salted and drying in this hot sun all morning. With this heat, drying meat was a snap. Think on the positive Ami.

The half-eaten bird was de-feathered and dressed. It was then cut up in pieces and boiled. There wasn’t much left of her but she wasn’t wasting it. The red head examined some of the feathers as some of them she got an idea for a fishing lure she saw someone toss on top of the water for bluegill. That was another day and the feathers could keep. That went into a small basket. Once the bird was cooked and deboned, the meat was set in a bowl to the side to cool. The bird bones, feet and rabbit bones were put into the pot with water to slowly cook out and render it down. Chicken bones and especially the feet had a lot of gelatin in it. Rabbit bones were also highly gelatinous and made a good glue. There was little to no waste. The head of the bird and the offal was given to the dog.

It took a while to render the glue out of the parts. The glue was still on the embers of the fire when she had gotten up. she went to stir the thickening mixture. The girl fished out the bones out or most of what was left. What was left was put into a bowl to cool. When she got back the cooled mixture would be gelled up and stable to store. In this heat, the cool off process may take a while. The amount wasn’t much but she was one person. The girl made plans to seek out sulfate minerals. The alum in the minerals was used as a mordant in dyes. Once added to the glue when it was warm it created a substance that was insoluble in water. It made fair water proofing. With the glue cooling, it was time to try out that monstrosity of an attempted training lure.

Getting to Know Camile 2

Postby Amunet on August 22nd, 2015, 5:57 pm

Once Shetanae was ready she swung up on the mare and commanded the dog to come. The silkena trotted after her. The easy canter found them in open grass. Danuae came down off of the strider and presented the lure to the dog. She sniffed it. Amunet started playing with her as she held it before her moving back and forth as the sight hound’s eyes followed the target. The red head threw it. It was attached to hemp rope. The dog caught it quickly and tugged as she was about to take off with it. “Camile, come.” The dog looked up at her as she held the lure in her mouth, then trotted towards her mistress. “Camile, drop it. Drop it!” She had to repeat it till she dropped the lure.

The little woman took time to pet the dog and ruffle the fur behind her ears. The lure play started and once again it was thrown as far as Amunet could get it. The dog was on the lure in no time again. “snazit, shes fast. “ She said under her breath. “Camile, come.” The dog came to her a little more readily, enjoying the game. “Camile, drop it.” There was some tugging involved and another. “Drop it!” before the dog gave up the prize. Again she praised the behavior of dropping the lure.

Ok time for some speed. She took the lure, dangling from her hand. She got up onto her horse and moved the lure to her right hand and made sure the dog could see it. “Camile, come.” A sharp dig of her heals and the strider was off. Amunet gave the lure a bit of line. The dog was in hot pursuit. She looked back to gauge speed as Shetanae was at gallop till Amunet leaned back slightly to a more controlled gallop then to a good canter. She let the lure go and the dog tackled the lure. The horse was turned and with a loping canter returned to the dog and the lure.

Amunet swung off of the mare. “Camile, drop it.” Her hand darted for the line of the lure. The dog pulled on her end. “No!” She stopped looking at her confused. “Drop it!!” The dog dropped the lure. The red head took that deep breath of patience again and exhaled. “Let’s try that again.”

The girl got back up on the strider and repeated the process. Entice the sight of the silkena and then start running. She paced the dog’s speed. Looking forward to make sure she wasn’t running into anything and then she was yanked off of her horse suddenly. The girl hit the ground kind of hard. The lure got caught inbetween the fork of a low bush.

It took several moments of deep breathing to get the breath that was knocked out of her. The silkena caught her lure and trotted to her. While she was gasping for air to try and get her breath back, the dark dog dropped the lure on her face. The woman threw the lure at the dog. Camile proceeded to retrieve it. She brought it back!!. Shetanae stopped a hundred yards or so when she noticed she didn’t have a rider. The confused horse trotted back to the display. Her nibbling nose was added to the whole face drama. The mare’s whiskers were and lipping the poor woman was trying to find out why her rider was laying on the ground. She took a full breath and flayed her arms as both mare and dog backed up a bit. Amunet had one point two seconds of time before the gods added their comedic timing. A butterfly at that moment fluttered towards her and then decided her nose was a decent perch.

The young lady must have stared at the butterfly for a few minutes before she huffed a puff of air. The blasted thing just fluttered its wings at her. It took two or three puffs of air to send it on its way. She groaned as she moved and rolled to one side to try and get up. “OK.” She stiffly got up, straightening up just as stiffly. “note to self, lures are not safe.” Amunet slowly moved to her horse. The dog picked the abhorrent lureup and brought it back to her, again. Those blue eyes looked at the even more mangled and falling apart lure. She took it with a pained expression. Rather it was the pain of the fall or the pain of what it took for her to do that was not clear. “Good girl.” She said. She did perform the behavior she wanted.

Getting to Know Camile 2

Postby Amunet on August 23rd, 2015, 1:19 am

It took some effort to get back on the mare. Once on the horse, she called the dog to come and started back to home. An easy loping canter was about the speed she could tolerate. Her back and back shoulders were protesting a little bit. It proved to her estimate to be some bruising back there but that should be it. Taking the yvas off of the mare, the sore red head let her go to do evening grazing. The girl moved a little stiffly back to the tent. Fortunately she didn’t break anything. The 2 quart pot she had was cleaned and then had water in it.

She got the fire going again with a little wood and a bit of blowing on the embers. Zibri chips and other dung chips was a readily available fuel source. For a couple of coppers you can get a pretty fair amount of fuel to spread the wood out. In the grasslands, wood can be difficult to find. The girl turned her lantern on in the dwindling light and worked to make a couple of hot poultices for herself as well as a cup of tea. Camile had found a spot inside the tent to lay down. Tonight, she would not be fidgety as she got a good work out. Amunet filed that information away as well.

The girl took her mortar and pestle out to grind tolm leaves. Amunet ground it for a while with strong hands pressing down to crush the leaves and get it into as close to a powder as she could. She would accept a coarse powder. In the dim light, a coarse powder would work. She got two pieces of course linen that she keeps for bandages. The dagger was used to cut the material roughly into the size she needed to make the poultice packets. The girl then stopped and went into her pack to dig out the soap. Once she found it, she would use her dagger to shave a small spoon full of the bits from it.

Once the water was boiling, she made her tea of vervain and valerian. She added mint as the herbs would tend to be bitter and it was not a strong mixture. It was for discomfort and to sleep, not to knock her out. The girl hobbled stiffly inside to prepare for bed and take off her shirt to be down to her undergarments. The girl slid out of her leather pants and draped it neatly over her belongings. She then pulled on her cloth bottoms and brought them up just at the hip. With her tea steeped she put the hot water with the herb mixture. It was placed a spoon full at a time till it was a hot paste. This was placed in the linen she wrapped the packets up and carefully carried them to her bedroll and put her tea at the head of the bed roll. The girl wasn’t even hungry.

The poor sore girl pulled off her top undergarment and laid down on the bed roll stomach down. It took some effort but each hot poultice wet side down was really hard. One needed to be placed on her lower back and one needed to be placed between her shoulder blades. Mara showed up from her family’s nearby pavilion. “Ami, I saw you hobble in. are you ok? “

Amunet groaned softly. Last thing she wanted was visitors. “Mara, im fine.” The classic auto response was the answer from Amunet. That face set stubbornly as she blew absently at her still hot tea. The girl sighed. “Look if you can put that poultice wet side down on my lower back and between my shoulders that be great.

Mara gave her a scowl. “You sure you don’t want me to send someone to get someone from the River Flower?” The gentle lady did as she was told and pressed a little rubbing the hot mixture into those two spots. “Is that it?”

Amunet gasped as it was applied. She gritted as Mara found the tender spots but breathed through it. The girl tried very hard not to snap at the woman. “No. The River Flower is completely stretched as it is. This will help a lot.” The warmth was already sinking in. There was a sigh as she took a sip of her tea.

Mara looked down at her and at her little set up. “You need a husband.” The woman said as she sighed and stood up.

Amunet’s eyes flared. “Why does everyone keep saying that. By the gods, why cant I just be me!!” The girl raised her voice. She was in pain and the woman had to pick on the sore spot figuratively at that.

“Don’t bristle at me young lady. A man protects the woman. A man provides and you cant make a baby without one.” The woman countered. She saw that Amunet’s temper was deteriorating and her usual patience was also gone. She looked to say something to the wayward red head, but decided not to. Her father would probably like to see grandchildren from her, but this was not the time to speak of it.

Amunet growled even as the woman left. Inwardly she knew she meant well, but her temper was just not tolerating any of this topic. The girl would probably apologize later.

Getting to Know Camile 2

The tea did its work as she fell asleep exactly like that on her stomach. Her eyes opened to the sun peeking through the tent. She took a deep breath in and exhaled. Mentally the young lady took stock of her body parts. There was a little ache. That she can deal with. Slowly she moved to a careful kneeling position as she brought her knees more in. There was a small twinge but not too bad. This was doable. The linen patches that made sure the poultice stayed there slid down her back.

“Let’s see if I can get this gook off of me.” The girl said even though the gook helped. The girl stripped down and used a little of her allotment of water and soap to wash the important parts. It took a bit as she moved her hair to get something between her shoulder blades to get the residual green stuff off. She knows she didn’t get all of it but she smelled better at least.

With water restrictions, washing clothes might be out of the question. From the smell in the air, it was going to be needed. Maybe if she rode out a bit to a further stream or something. The girl had to think about this as she put her green summer dress on for now. The girl looked quite a bit feminine in the dress. Her red hair was more vibrant against the green as she was like firebloom amongst the white lilies. The girl slid her summer stockings on and her sandals. The girl bagged up her laundry and soap.

She got her horse up and ready before strapping her sandals on. “Come” tapping her side as the dog looked at her confused. She nudged the horse further. “Camile, come.” The girl tapped her side again. The dog followed, as she headed out into the grass. The dress was bunched up a bit as she made for the grass.

The restrictions of the city faded away as she relaxed more out here. “Let us see.” The stubborn red head said to really no one. “This way.” The girl nudged her mount towards a spot that was a bit out. It was an hour’s ride but she really needed her clothes washed.

Once she was at a suitable location she dismounted and grabbed her bag of laundry. Spotting a suitable stone she took her sandals and stockings off. Then she took up her skirt and tied it to one side of her upper thigh. The girl was a slight formed little thing and barely made a splash as she went into the water. The undergarments were first as she took the upper garment and plunged it into the water getting it good and wet. The soap was applied as she went to the rock and agitated it a bit. The garments were scrubbed against the rock and soap was added to soiled spots. Water was added. She started rinsing and wringing the garment out. She held it up and turned it around to see if she was happy with it. The red head was satisfied.

She then worked the rest of the garments. It was her one set of undergarments, cloth shirt and pants. These were all washed in turn as Amunet was in no hurry. Now that her garments were much cleaner, she bundled things up, gave the come command to the dog and rode back to the city with the dog running close by. She hung out the garments to dry, which will dry quickly in the heat.

Getting to Know Camile 2

Postby Amunet on August 23rd, 2015, 11:12 pm

The girl went into the main tent, before people settled to rest in the apex of the heat. Finding Mara, the girl came towards her. “Mara, I'm sorry.” The girl said to her.

Mara smiled. “You was not feeling well, child. “ The woman sighed. “I'm only doing whats best for you. How is your back doing?”

“My back is fine. A little sore, but I can move at least. “ She laughed a little.

“You was always clever with herbs. Like your mother.” Mara chuckled softly too. “oh that is a lovely dress. The color suits you. Turn around.”

The dress had come down and its full femininity of it was showing. The girl turned around hesitantly not sure she liked the fact she was on display, even for family. “Thank you. I had to wash my clothes. “

“You could have a good man from a good clan if you put your mind to it. “ said Mara softly. “Your very pretty.”

The girl sighed. “Mara…” The poor girl looked up a bit exasperated. “I am going back to my tent to rest out the heat. “

With that the red head beauty walked out and to her tent. Her head was shaking as she couldn’t escape this. Amunet retreated back to her tent to get a drink of luke warm water and lay down. Camile had already settled down and Shetanae had found some shade.

Mara shook her head for an entirely other reason. The Pavilion talked about this daughter of Shimmestone of marriageable age. She could make another pavilion stronger or this one. This woman child had no interest in winning a husband. Some circles held to the adage that a husband wasn't to look at, a husband was to get. The fiery temper was melded with a deep compassion that confused men. The girl was such a handful and full of spirit and life. Some men preferred a placid wife. Amunet was far from placid. The occupants of the main tent started to lay down and rest out the heat. It was the only way to deal with it. There was a chuckle from the first wife of Goren. The insufferable heat reminded her of the spirited red head a bit.

Amunet's back will be sore for the next seven days but should heal well.

Notes

Food preservation, butchery, and cooking I couldn't give you anything for because instead of 'Amunet did this or that' you've got it all as past tense 'The meat dried in the sun all day'. Where is the detail? Where is the part where Amunet actually gets her hands dirty? How does she know that she can make glue from animal parts? I need to see something like "Amunet picked up the bird and sat plucking its feathers out one by one until it was bare. She used her hunting knife to cut... etc. You must make the actions or I cannot award you. Please don't overplay your character's skill level. She shouldn't be able to do half the things you have her doing and if I see it again I will throw up and intervention and the thread will go ungraded until you are able to re-write it.

I'm going to skip your next grade request and give you a day or two incase there are any adjustments you need to make after reading this feedback. Let me know when you're happy with it and I will go back and look over it for grading.
