Reimancy Initiation [Location: Inner Sanctum]

49th of Spring 515 AV

After all of the trails and study, it was finally time for Nivel to be initiated into the art of Reimancy. When the sun began to set that day Sera Grey escorted Nivel on her shoulder to the inner Sanctum, a dreary looking abandoned laboratory that was now used by resident mages for their risky endeavours. The Mage knight had taken the time to reserve the location in order to avoid being disturbed during the life changing ritual, so there was only silence and darkness that greeted them as they opened the heavy doors. It was still likely that the current owner Devandil Nightshade would make a visit or at least spy on them some how to see if the ritual went smoothly, which was at least somewhat comforting.

Sera Grey was understandably nervous but it didn’t show from underneath her odd looking mask covered in odd symbols and designs. Nivel on the other hand was mostly excited because she was going to be gaining a new and exciting skill and experience, the risks didn’t really sink into her tiny nexus yet. The Mage Knight had done this ritual a few times prior but not with a pycon, their biology was so foreign that she wasn’t sure how her squire would react to the Res. Would the pycon implode, would she turn to dust or would it simply not work, only the god Lhex would know for certain. She placed the tiny pycon on to a table darkened with various burn marks and cleared her throat.

“Squire Nivel, you have proven yourself worthy of learning the practice of Reimancy by showing that you are capable of restraint, foresight and excellent control of Djed.” Sera Grey spoke softly as she held out her hands with her palms facing her squire. “Hold out your hands and receive the gift of Res”

Nivel quickly complied without saying a word and eagerly awaited the next step.

A glittering purple vapour began seeping out of the Mage Knights hands and it gently swirled about as it became more dense and vibrant. It wasn’t long before enough of the Res was created and it began wafting over to Nivel in small smoky streams. The second it made contact with Nivel she felt an alarming feeling. It wasn’t like anything she had ever felt before and she couldn’t tell if it was a bad feeling or a good one at first. It quickly became overwhelming however, to the point of being painful. The pycon started to lose control of her form as it rapidly changed to make sense of the foreign substance invading her body.

The mage knight continued to slowly fill Nivel’s tiny body with Res until she felt she had been given enough to create the desired effect. The whole point was for the substance to push the subjects limits a touch but too much could be fatal. The Res that was already inside Nivel had to stay there for a while as she dealt with having it inside her.

“Try to Relax Squire Nivel and focus on the Res, let your body get used to the feeling that it brings” Sera Grey said in the most calming voice she could muster.

The sound of her patrons voice almost seemed like it was a distant echo with all the overpowering sensations flooding Nivel’s nexus. The pycon almost felt lost in her own body, her arms didn’t feel like her arms and her ears didn’t feel like her ears. Her body was moving and fluctuating so much she barely had time to breath because her lungs kept moving about in her body. Regardless she was able to regain focus little by little by counting to ten, over and over again until she was able to confidently count to the last digit without succumbing to the confusion. It seemed like being completely relaxed was impossible in this state but she was at least able to stay in a physical form and mental state that somewhat resembled her usual self.

After she calmed herself she fought through the pain and sensory overload, Nivel tried to get herself familiar with the feeling of Res. Having become fairly skilled at Auristics she had become adept at remembering abstract sensations and categorizing them in her memory banks.

“Keep the feeling in your mind because it will help you create Res much easier in the future” Sera Grey continued with her instructions “I will soon extract the Res so continue to endure and maintain your focus”

Nivel tried to maintain the feeling of Res in her mind as her body continued to fight against it. The stain was unbearable but she was starting to accept the pain and discomfort like it was something natural. Magic caused her much pain throughout her life and she had learned it was best to just live with it until it was over.

After watching her tiny squire flail about and rapidly change like she had never done before, Sera Grey figured it was time to finally start extracting the Res from her tiny clay body. As the purple mist began seeping from the ceramic flesh, the hold that Nivel had gained on her mental state began to crack and she was back to how she felt when she first made contact with the etherial substance. Spikes erupted from her body, hands grew from her legs, clay vines twisted around her arms and her head spit in two. The pycon could swear she heard people whispering and screaming from inside of her. It quickly proved to much and Nivel fainted.

When she awoke, Nivel was alarmed to find that she couldn’t move her limbs but discovered that she was simply pinned down by heavy wool blankets. She scanned her surroundings to find that she was in Sera Grey’s room and relaxed. Her head was still throbbing and her entire body was full of aches and pains but she was otherwise feeling well. The pycon did feel that something was different about her, she felt her head and noticed that she had little buds growing on her head and her horn had become more textured. The Mage Knight came into view and her now unmasked face revealed her relief in seeing that her squire had regained conciseness.

“Thank the mighty Sylir, I thought I had lost you..” The Patron sighed painfully. Her eyes were still puffy from her salty tears and her usually pale face was more flushed that usual so It was clear even to Nivel that she had been very upset.
“Don’t worry It takes a lot to take me down, no need to be sad” Nivel weakly comforted her Patron.
“Well ether way I am relieved to see that you are okay, We will return you to your own bunk soon but I took the libraries of moving it into my room for tonight. Just so I can keep watch on you.” The Mage Knight gestured over to he sock laying in a small basket of tiny blankets.
“Oh thank you Sera Grey” Nivel replied with a thankful nod of her head “…I just have one question”
“Yes, what is it?”
“When do I start learning Reimancy, I want to see what my starting element is.”
Sera Grey hesitated for a moment after hearing Nivel’s question and her gaze fell to the floor.
“After you have finished with your much needed rest we will see what your first element is and start your training.”

Reimancy Initiation [Location: Inner Sanctum]

51st Day of Spring, 515 AV

After having a full day of rest and relaxation, Nivel awoke the next mourning feeling considerably better. She still wasn’t feeling quite her usual chipper self but still knew she was ready to start practicing magic. She found her patron catching up on some reading in the Sylirian Archives, and caught the Mage knights attention by jumping on her book.
“Nivel! you frightened me!” The startled patron shrieked and the slouched a bit in embarrassment as she scanned her surroundings for agitated looks.
“Oops sorry…..ummm so can my lessons in Reimancy start now?” Nivel was too excited to be concerned with pleasantries and fluttered her ears as she waited for the verdict from Sera Grey.
“I suppose nothing is really stopping us…” The masked women hesitantly replied, she clearly didn’t share the pycons enthusiasm and paused to think of excuses to get out of teaching her Squire but none came to mind.

The two headed to the Inner sanctum once more, but this time it wasn’t entirely vacant. There was a mage in the far corner who seemed to be manipulating fire from a few candles that were all placed at different distances from him. Nivel took note that the Res at the mans hand was a thick gel blob that was gold in colour. Having only seen Sera Grey’s Res the pycon assumed it all came out as purple mist.
“His Res is so different than yours..or is that even Res?” Nivel asked as she pointed to the mysterious mage.
“Since Res is produced from the users essence it can come in different colours and consistencies depending on who conjures it” Sera grey quietly whispered to her Squire. “Anyway, how about we go over here and proceed” She gestured to the opposite corner of the building near a row of empty cupboards.

“Lets start with a bit of meditation, then we will put some precautionary shielding up before starting Reimancy, Does that make sense?” Sera grey asked
“Yes, were making the shields to protect against any mishaps with the Reimancy right?” Nivel confirmed her understanding with a touch of uncertainty.
“Correct, now get into a relaxed position and lets start” Sera Grey instructed before sitting down cross legged on the charred ground.

Nivel did the same and began to focus her mind or at least she tried. The pycon kept being distracted by what the other mage to the far corner was doing. He coaxed the flames flickering on the candle to flutter in the air like butterflies in the wind.
“Focus” The Patron whispered abruptly and the spell the pycon was under was broken. It was very tempting to watch but Nivel forced her self to forget it and clear her mind. When she was finally relaxed and her mind was clear she began to think of the shield she wanted to create. When she had it clear in her mind she began to blow air gently from her mouth hole. Only air came out at first but djed soon followed. The shield slowly spread over her body and eventually enveloped her, she took extra care to smooth out the gaps and thin area’s in the barrier so she had complete coverage.

“Okay, I’m covered now what do I do?” Nivel asked while flapping her ears eagerly.
“Simply focus on the feeling of Res on the area you want it to show up and you should start to conjure it.” Sera Grey answered calmly, her meditation session seemed to make her more relaxed about her squire learning reimancy than she was before.
Nivel nodded her head and began to focus once more. With the bizzare and surreal feeling still fresh in her mind it seemed very easy to remember. She imagined it exiting the pam of her hands and suddenly the feeling became a reality. Sparkling emerald green fluid started to appear and as it did Nivel felt as if the tip of a dagger was penetrating her nexus.

Fearing that the Res would drip to the floor she held her palms up and cradled the magical substance as it slowly grew in size. It’s consistency soon revealed itself to be more similar to sap or honey but thankfully without the stickiness. The process was talking far longer than Nivel had ever imagined and it was only getting more unbearable as it progressed. Concentration was hard to maintain and when ever the tiny mage lost focus the Res would halt in production but the pain lingered. She continued to push through it and continued her breathing exercises until she was back on track.

“That should be enough” The very patient Sera Grey finally interjected and Nivel gave a thankful sigh of relief. “Okay you are the one in control of it now, or at least to some extent. Your reach is low but you should be able to move it around your body as long as it stays in sight.” The Mage Knight lightly gave a shoving gesture to encourage her squire “Go on, imagine it moving and it should do as you command. Gestures tend to help in the beginning but soon you’ll be able to move it around with just your mind.”

Nivel nodded her aching head and did as her Patron suggested. Being a fairly imaginative creature who was frequently lost in day dreams she got the the Res to swim about in the air like a lively undersea creature. As the sparkling emerald blob moved about Nivel conducted its movement with her hands and tails. She still had the dull pounding in her head but she was so mesmerized by what she had created it no longer mattered.

“Wonderful!” Sera Grey exclaimed with a happy but restrained clap of the hands. “Now give yourself a safe distance from the Res and focus on bringing about a change to it. The rest Should happen naturally but be careful this is the part where things get dangerous.” Sera Grey could see that her pupil had a bit of talent in Res but she still started to tremble a bit as she waited for the next step.

“But how am I able to if I don’t know what I want it to change into?” Nivel questioned, she wasn’t really sure how to proceed at this point.
“Like I said just try thinking of it becoming something and it’s true nature will reveal itself to you” Sera Grey repeated her vague response which only made the pycon even more confused.

Nivel sighed and after moving the Res as far as she could control it to go she did as she was told, closed her visual receptors and began to focus. The first thing that came to mind was the butterfly the mage had just made out of fire, she used this as inspiration and began imagining the winged creature hatching from the Emerald Res in front of her. It wasn’t a butterfly made of fire However, but one that possessed light aqua coloured wings like the sky on a clear spring day. The wings this make believe creature possessed were so strong that they created gusts of wind with each delicate and graceful flap. As she created this in her mind, her Res began to fade and as it did a strong current of wind began to take it’s place. The wind was concentrated into one solid ball of turbulence and it created a steady breeze around it.

“So your first element is air, I feel that suits you Nivel” Nodded the mage Knight who was beyond thankful that her squire had started with a more chaotic element like fire. Sera Grey could still hear the screams in her head of the one Reimancer who burned themselves alive and it send shivers down the women spine.
“Okay now calm yourself and Dismiss it” She instructed Nivel, who nodded and quickly did as she was told. The raging ball of wind settled until it was completely gone.
“Well that went surprisingly well, How about we go get some herbal tea to aid with your head ache?” Sera Grey propositioned before picking up her tired Squire into her hands.
Nivel simply nodded weakly and played back in the tall folks hands, as she imagined the cup of hot tea she was going to bathe in.

Comments: I loved reading your initiation thread. I find people are always so creative with their magic threads. I particularly liked how a sense of real danger was exhibited and that Nivel had to sleep a day off after the initiation.

One thing I wanted to note was that once res has been transmuted into an element, the reimancer can no longer control it. So when Sera Grey said, "Dismiss it," it is unlikely that Nivel could have actually controlled the air at that point. Reimancers can, however, control existing air (in Nivel's case) by conjuring res to attract the air to the res and manipulate it that way.

Secondly, since Nivel is a novice shielder, it would have taken more than just a few minutes to create a shield. At competent a shielder just needs a couple of minutes to create a shield. At novice it seems like it would take a good chunk of time and when I was reading the thread it didn't seem to take all that long. I still awarded a point for that, but remember that for next time.

Great job and a wonderful read.
