Clyde needed a place to work. He hadn't been in Syliras long, but he already was ready to get to work. The sooner the better he figured, since anything he did would take time to reach fruition.

He'd wanted to get a lab in Nyka, but it hadn't been possible since he'd been an outsider. But here in Syliras he was a native, born and raised. It'd likely be trickier since he wanted a magic lab, but it was for a world magic, and one that could be of use to the order. After all, who else in Syliras had the money to buy Magecrafted items but the Knights?

Plus, he had the skill to make sure it was safe. He was as skilled a warder as he was a Magecrafter, and even if a catastrophe did occur he doubted it'd break his glyphs. Once he was done warding it up even another djed storm like the one years past wouldn't budge them. He was that sure of his skill.

With his blue staff Cha in hand, Clyde entered the housing authority. Once it was his turn, he did his best to make his needs clear, along with his reasoning.

“Yes, I am Clyde, Clyde Sullins. Magecrafter, born of Syliras and returned. I am in need of some lab space to do my work. A Magecrafter's lab. I have the skills to use it, and to ward it. I need work space and equipment. And some living quarters with them.”

“I am sure should I get what I need, I would be able to make various useful things for the knighthood. Particularly with fall and harvest here...”

Clyde's mind wandered, leaving unsaid the rest as he began to pick an idea apart in his mind. He'd stare into space for a bit as he did so, considering how the item would work, its level, cost, time to make, and the steps needed for it. He'd continue to stare off in a distracted manner until one of the knights spoke to him and drew his attention.

He often did such as ideas occurred to him. It being harvest, it seemed likely the knights would want something to protect said harvest. Making an item that repelled common pest's would be more or less straightforward. A small item that kept a certain pest type at bay. It could be placed in a storage, and used to keep pests from getting in. Or could be carried by someone, and perhaps make said pests leave their spots amongst said storage or crops as the holder passed.

It had only been a chime or so, but he was already deep in though into his process of mentally planning out the item.

Ser Nigriso had just finished placing a recently arrived family somewhere in the Maiden District when a tall young man approached his desk. Suppressing an eye watering yawn after so many bells of addressing citizens both old and new and all of their housing needs, the Knight put on a welcoming smile and beckoned for the young man to sit.

"Magecrafter, you say?" Ser Nigriso repeated, though more with a curious tone rather than the usual, outright suspicious one most Knights of the Order adopted when it came to magic users. "Well, Mister Sullins, welcome back to our fair, shining city."

Without warning, the Knight awkwardly held up one finger and turned to rifle through a fat stack of papers behind his desk. He mumbled to himself as he searched until he found what he was looking for with an emphatic "ah hah!" Tugging a slim folder out from under a stack and setting it on the table, Ser Nigriso skimmed through the first page before addressing Clyde once more.

"As you may already know, young Sullins, we treat all magic use here in the city with heavy restrictions. I cannot just go about all willy nilly giving any self-proclaimed mage a lab to tinker with." The Knight folded his hands across the edge of his desk. "That being said, we do have the accommodations you're seeking. The lot is in Winthrop Alley, which may be of a useful location to you, as it is close to most of the goods imported and exported at the docks. A rather elaborate little shop used to sit on this lot, but it remains empty and abandoned, five years to the date. We had been considering rebuilding something in its stead, so you've come at just the right time--"

Ser Nigriso lifted his finger up into the air again, "--if, of course, we can determine you may be entrusted with such a privilege. There will be payment required as well for the lot, the lab, and any necessary furniture. Presently the shop space is empty, but it should prove spacious enough for both equipment and residential needs."

"But before we can proceed with this new allotment of property, I must ask something of you," he added. "A set of questions, nothing more. It should take but a few chimes of your time. Question number one: could you specify what kinds of useful things you would be able to provide the Order, harvest or otherwise? And number two, a simple scenario. I shall tell it to you once you've answered my first question."

The Knight waited until Clyde offered his first answer before moving onto the second question, as promised. "Here is your last task. Imagine that you walk into the woods one day, alone, and you encounter an animal. Beyond this animal is your home, inside which is a table. Now tell me the following. First, what is the animal and how do you choose to interact with it? Second, how large is your home, is it protected in any way? And third, what lies upon the table within your home? These questions must sound strange, I know. But humor me this once and you can be well on your way to a brand new laboratory."

Ser Nigriso smiled and waited, eyes bright with curiosity.

Clyde broke off his thought process as the man before him began to speak. For a moment he'd gotten caught up in his thinking of magic, something he perhaps did a bit too often.

He was quick though to break from his self imposed revery, and to return to the situation at hand.

After a moment his tone registered. Not one of anger, or suspicion, but more of a curious one. A clear and good sign, and not one he after heard of a knight when discussing magic or a related topic.

Clyde waited patiently as the man rifled through some papers, apparently searching for something. He seemed to find it quickly enough, and soon explained what he'd found.

At his mention of the restrictions on magic, and not giving away a lab to every "self proclaimed mage," Clyde leaned forward and spoke to him quietly as if in confidence.

“And nor should you. Not every mage has the skill or discipline as I do. They'd be more likely to leaving a smoking crater where a lab was once, than to create something fantastic or magical. Half the mages I've met I wouldn't trust to work alone, and I've met quite a few in my training in Zeltiva and on Sahova.”

This was meant to show understanding, along with showing his skill. He did mention it outright, but he had been an instructor of Glyphing in Zeltiva, along with being a ranked wizard on Sahova for his Magecrafting. Neither feat was possible for the unskilled. If nothing else though mentioning the cities would perhaps show he was well traveled, as both cities were known for their magic to varying levels.

He wasn't thrown off by the fact that he was to be asked questions. If nothing else it had been expected. He didn't fully understand what the man was wanting, or what he thought to find out by them, but Clyde simply shrugged and accepted the request.

For the first question, Clyde smiled and began a short explanation, one that did not encompass nearly a fraction of what he could offer.

“Well for the first question, thats rather hard to pin down. I can think of some things, things you might like, things the order or city might find of use, but I cannot fully answer that question without knowing what resources will be at my disposal. And I do not simply mean monetary or item needs, but other things of use in creative enchantment. People with unique skills, crafting, gnosis, all could affect my answer and open up new possibilities if made available to me.”

“Plus, I cannot fully list what I could make, without fully understanding your needs and desires. I would need assistance from your side, to understand your problems, so that I could then find solutions, or to tell if a simpler solution might exist than Magecrafting. But off the top of my head, I do have a few prospects in mind, mostly theory based but based in fact, some more hard than others.”

“For the harvest for instance, I would imagine pest control would be an issue. The same for food storage. Rats, mice, other pests, do tend to get into both crops and food storage. I could perhaps make an item to repel a certain type of pest, and thus keep a set area clean of intrusion by their type. Or perhaps it could be used in other ways.”

“I also know how to do some more standard enchantment. Making armor or weapons sturdier, sharper, more hard hitting, and such. Or making a item bane to a certain foe. I once made a dagger that could slice through the flesh of a yukmen like warm butter. Similar items bane of a creature could be made, for other weapons or other creatures.”

“I know how to make Magic Staff's, proper ones, a useful tool for any war mage. Or... Or I could make more theoretical items, ones I've thought of in passing but not tested. Theory, but if proven and done correctly possibly of great benefit. A tracker item for instance, to detect a specific creature, to warn of its presence. Or to point to it... Or other things. Magecrafted is unlimited in potential, and in crafting only limited by the resources presented to a skilled enchanter.”

By this point Clyde had grown quite excited, talking more like he was giving a lesson than answering a question. He had, after all, been an instructor, and was quite skilled in the art of teaching.

He'd almost let the question get away from him and out of hand in his answering.

“Ah, right, and you mentioned a second question...”

Clyde paused here, a grin on his face for having answered in such a lengthy manner, though without any embarrassment or shame on his face.

After listening to the question in his mind, he broke it down into the various parts, the questions, the answers, the story, and spun his answer into a story in response.

“I am alone in the woods, and run into an animal... The animal is my canine friend and protector, Rye, who was faithfully guarding my home while I was away. As I approach he comes up to greet me, I give him a small treat, a bit of meat I'd saved from my trip. I give it a pet as I walk by, and Rye follows along as I enter. My home is not large, but it is not small either. It is large enough to fit my needs. A small entry way for greeting guests, a kitchen off to the side, my lab to work in, a space for reading and writing, and a few rooms for resting myself and any guests or those who might assist in my work and need to rest also.”

“There are no protections on the outside, only those on the inside, lest anything foul or dangerous that is within that shouldn't get out won't. Those however are limited to the lab, where the work is done, and are of a mostly passive nature. They are meant to keep things safe before the problem arises. The table is in the kitchen, and upon it rests dinner. A simple meal, but a hearty one to fill the hungriest belly. My friend has cooked it in expectation of my arrival, and we eat together happily, till we can eat no more.”

Clyde paused for a moment, having completed his story and answer, and let out a small sigh as he met the eyes once more of the knight who had asked the question.

The Knight listened patiently, nodding with the occasional peep of a grin as Clyde spoke in great detail and enthusiasm about the kinds of things he could craft. Though he showed no outward sign that he approved of the young mage's ideas, he offered none that might suggest he disapproved of them, either.

Then the second set of answers came, and this time Ser Nigriso's eyes bore a glint of interest as the story unraveled. "Ah, so we have it," he breathed once Clyde was finished. "Very thorough answers, much appreciated."

Without further explanation, he retrieved two pieces of paper from the folder and laid them on top of the desk face up. "Your ideas will be noted and in the coming days we may contact you to discuss them further. Of course, a suitable time to meet can be arranged, but you won't have to worry about that for now. And as for your second answer..."

The Knight folded his hands and gazed at Clyde levelly. "A story says much of its teller, as I'm sure you know. Despite your youth, you seem confident and in control of your life, and wise in your choice of priorities. Passionate, yes. But fool headed and reckless, no. And what's more, you are a rarity...a wielder of magic who still has all his limbs attached, a genial disposition, and people in his life he can call friends. Though, correct me if I am wrong, it appears you have no close kin to speak of, I take it?"

He abruptly shook his head and waved one hand to nullify his last question. "Forgive me, that is perhaps too personal. It is the one privilege of my job that I enjoy the most, being able to familiarize myself with folk both old and new, and sometimes I forget my manners."

"Here," Ser Nigriso offered hurriedly, turning the pieces of paper toward Clyde so that he could read them properly, as well as placing both ink and quill before him. "The one on the left will allot the abandoned shop in Winthrop Alley to your name, once you've signed your full name and date at the bottom. This paper on the right is for you to list all that you require equipment and furniture wise so that we may tally up the final costs and keep record."

Once the first paper was signed and the second filled out, the Knight would proceed to let the ink dry as he scanned over the items Clyde listed. Depending on what the young mage required, he would adjust the final costs appropriately.

From the occasional moment of focus on the knight, it seemed the man was purposely keeping his expression passive and not showing anything. Not that Clyde spent too much time focused on him. Enthralled in his own thoughts, he was more focused on his ideas for Magecrafting than on the knight for the moment. Likely if he'd leapt up and came swinging with a sword that would've changed, but a passive man sitting and listening didn't garner much of Clyde's direct attention.

But then he'd spent time as a teacher, and so perhaps he was more used to such things due to that.

Once he did talk, his first note seemed to imply that the knighthood was interested in talking to Clyde about Magecrafting, if not yet outright being willing to commission anything.

His second note, more of an appraisal of his assumptions about Clyde, weren't wrong, but weren't the whole story either. Clyde had been through many a trial, many a trial that lesser wizards had failed to survive. In some cases quite literally, as while his past wasn't full of piles of dead, quite a few did litter the sides of his path. Some where his fault directly, other indirectly, and other not his fault at all.

But Clyde knew above all the hazards of magic, the dangers of giving in, and of caring too much of oneself so as to let the whispers take hold.

It was a testament to his strength of will that he'd lasted as long as he had, and had progressed as quickly as he had.

At his mention of kin Clyde tensed for a moment, staring back at the man. However he soon swept onward and admitted that it wasn't his business, and focused on other things instead.

He did in fact have kin, kin right in Syliras. His parents lived here in the city. His father was a smith, forging in iron and steel tools and weapons. He worked with his hands, and had made his first staff for him that he'd carried around at all times till he'd enchanted Cha. His mother was... Clyde wasn't sure what his mother did, but she'd always been about home in his youth, cleaning or cooking or helping a neighbor with something.

He'd been gone so long, for all he knew he had some siblings. He hadn't visited when he'd last returned to Syliras, and he wasn't sure if he'd visit home this time.

Likely though if the knighthood looked into him, it wouldn't be to hard to find Clyde wasn't the only Sullins in Syliras.

“A mage that does magic only for them self, can never be a true mage. At least not for long. Its only in placing importance on another, another person, another thing or ideal, that one can stop when one must.”

While Clyde was physically young, mentally through many trials he'd aged far beyond his years. There was perhaps wisdom in what he said, and a deeper level of understanding than even Clyde knew as he said it. But he knew it to be true, if not to its full extent.

Caring for another one or thing, Clyde had found, was the only way to fight overgiving and the sweet whispers as they offered one endless joy and pleasure.

Clyde met the knights eyes as he finished his statement, letting his eyes linger for a moment, before breaking his stare and taking the papers in turn. The first he quickly signed and dated.

The left he wrote out his various needs for the structure, the longest bit being the tools of his trade and equipment he would need to fully outfit a proper Magecrafting lab.

Once he was done writing out his list, and had given the knight some time to read it over, he asked one final question.

“How long will it take for the lab to be fully equipped and outfitted, and of use?”

Once Clyde was finished with the pieces of paper, Ser Nigriso turned both and let them dry as he scanned over the various equipment listed. From memory alone, he began to add little numbers next to each item before tallying everything up at the end.

"Not too long, I should think," he replied to Clyde's question whilst tallying, "at most a handful of days, at that, since the shop remains empty and ready for occupation at any time. It's just a matter of assembling all of the equipment you have requested at this point."

With the final cost determined, he turned the paper back around for young Sullins to review. "That should be the complete sum required of you. If you are able to pay it all at once, you may do so now, or come back anytime and I will be happy to finish the transaction for you. As for the laboratory, just let me know where you are currently residing and I can send a page to leave you a notice once everything is ready for you."

At that, the Knight stood up and extended his hand. "It's been a pleasure, Mister Sullins. I think you for your cooperation, as well as a rather intriguing conversation. Perhaps we can discuss more on the matters of all of the different ways your craft may come to benefit the Order."

With their exchange finished, he sat back down and beamed up at the mage. "Should you have any more questions or concerns, do not hesitate to let me know!"

Clyde nodded in response to the simple and vague response of "not too long."

Anytime when waiting for such a thing was too long, but Clyde knew he would have to wait. Taking in a deep calming breath, Clyde held it for a moment inside his lungs, before slowly letting it out. He also slowly stroked his hand down the length of Cha, his staff, a motion he did more often than he realized.

The familiar feel of the wood was a calming presence, and helped him to distract himself from the wait. Clyde could be a patient man when the moment required it, but that didn't mean he enjoyed it.

“I have the funds now. I'll have that bit done before hand and transferred over. And I'm staying at the White Swan for the moment. Though not for long I suppose... ”

Clyde stood and took the knights hand after first switching Cha to his other, giving a firm reply shake without attempting to get into a contest of strength.

“Yes, I'd enjoy that. Once the lab is done, I'm sure we could figure out what I could do first for the knighthood. Or whomever it is that I'd be dealing with in regards to such an undertaking. Good day.”

With that Clyde paid and headed out the door, glad to be done with one thing off of his list.

He had a lab. Now he just needed something to make in it, and the needed resources and things to do so.

Already his mind was looking forward to what he might make first.
