Something For My Stomach

Postby Merevaika on December 9th, 2015, 8:29 pm

11th Winter 515
A deep growl erupted from her stomach, reminding her once again that it was time to eat. But Merevaika had no food. She was hungry and didn't want to spend the effort and time to go out to hunt. And the few rations she had saved for the winter had been stolen from her, a thief stealing from a thief. It was ironic, but that didn't stop her from planning to do just the same. Two could play at that game.

Merevaika had no way of finding who it was that had snatched her food, so couldn't steal it back. But she could always pick some other unknowing target, and as she stalked through the tents at the light of dawn, she let herself wonder who would be the best target. The backs of tents flew past her, until she settled on one, where she could see no shadows nor hear no movement.

Living in a city of tents made stealing so much more easy. No locks to stop her, no doors to block the way. There was the web, but Merevaika knew enough to be able to pick out the smaller groups, the ones less likely to have knowledge as foreigners. Targets less likely to be able to pull at the djed and form the reinforcements she knew could be made. One day, she would learn it, and learn to avoid it. Until then, she would make sure she didn't set any web off.

The Drykas woman sunk low to the ground, tugging the tent wall up the very slightest. It had been firmly pegged to the ground, but a gap was formed, a rush of warm air warming her fingers. Furs covered the ground, but no person made a move to stop her, and the woman rolled under with little difficulty, glad for her lean nature. The thief wriggled all the way through, and let the tent fall behind her, sealing the room. A sleeping area, with plenty of furs and cloths, but no food. She had been lucky to have not been caught.

Merevaika moved to the next section, which had been designed as a kitchen, pots in one corner and still flaming fire in the next. Every step was gentle, slow and well timed, and no one came. Through the next doorway lay several barrels and chests. She could smell it even before she saw it. Another step forward, then she hesitated. Were the hidden djed strands covering the most important part of surviving winter? Even if the camp hadn't, this was much more important. Better not enter the food storage area, just in case. Instead, she searched around the kitchen, hoping for a scrap laying around. Just a small bundle of meat, which she pocketed quickly. It was still hot, which meant someone had to be around.

She heard their voice, calling out to someone as they started to make their way towards the tent. The Drykas pushed back into the sleeping area, hiding behind the furs that separated them. The woman who had come in began to hum as she worked on the fire. Merevaika paid no more attention - she pulled up the wall of the tent, wriggling through. Her foot got caught, but it only took seconds to slip out, somehow managing to escape. It wasn't a lot, but she could always try again.

This time, she spotted a girl, who looked vaguely familiar with the large blue eyes. Merevaika couldn't place her, but she looked vulnerable, and if Merevaika had seen her before, it must have been alone. She would be her next target. The Drykas waited for the right moment, before she would strike.

oocThat's you! mind giving me a little info on where the food would be, and I'll get to stealing it!

Something For My Stomach

Ever since the hunt last season, one of the three hunting cats that called the camp home, a young male named Kabek, seemed to have taken an interest Seirei. Seirei wasn't at all certain why he seemed to like her, but she was growing to like him in return. Especially when he occasionally brought her gifts like the mangled rabbit he had just dropped at her feet. Seirei rubbed his head in thanks.

She set the rabbit aside while she dug a fire pit, and lined the bottom with grass, and small bits of bark. Then she struck her flint against the stone it came with several times until she managed to get several sparks. She blew gently on the fragile flame that resulted, until it grew stronger. Then she added bigger bits of bark, and clumps of twisted grass to fuel her fire. Once the fire had grown large enough to cook with, Seirei got a pot out, and filled it with water.

Then she turned her attention back to the rabbit. The hide was mangled, and Seirei knew that what little knowledge she had in skinning an animal wasn't enough to leave her with anything useful. So she didn't even try. She found the place just beneath the rabbit's breast, and cut into the carcass, slitting it open towards the hind legs. She pulled at the slit, using her hands to tear the skin free to expose the meat. Then she cut off the creature's limbs to make it easier to remove the rest of the skin. When that was done, she cut deeper into the rabbit's belly, exposing the organs. She knew that puncturing the organs would be bad, but she wasn't sure how deep she could cut before she was at risk of doing that. So she worked slowly, and hesitantly. When the organs were exposed, she pulled them out, and offered them to Kabek. He had brought her the rabbit after all, so he deserved a reward for doing so. From Kabek's reaction to the offering, he seemed quite happy with the organs as he began eating them quickly.

Seirei began chopping the rabbit meat into small, uneven chunks. The unfamiliar task was harder than Seirei expected it to be as she had to hold the rabbit in one hand and tear chunks of meat off with the knife using the other hand. A single rabbit wasn't much in the way of food, but if put into a stew, it would go farther. When she was finished, Seirei dumped the chunks of meat into the pot. Then she glanced at the bones. Hadn't she heard that cooking the bones with the stew would add flavor to it? Seirei couldn't really remember for certain. But on the chance that it would, she added the bones as well.

Once she had done that, Seirei went to get a few vegetables. You couldn't have a proper stew without vegetables, after all. Seirei smiled at the thought. How many times had she heard her mother say that when she was a kid? Seirei selected a few potatoes, and carrots from their stores. That should be enough. She hoped. In either case, Seirei didn't want to take too much of their remaining winter stores for a single meal.

Seirei sliced the carrots up first. Her experience in cutting wood for her carving projects aided her somewhat. As a result, her carrot pieces were roughly all the same size, and they were cut evenly. Not like the rabbit meat, which she had had to pry from the carcass as she'd cut it into chunks. When she reached for the first potato, she frowned. Dirt clung to it, which made sense, given that they had been dug out of the ground. Seirei went to get a second, smaller pot, and filled it with water, too. Then she rinsed off the potatoes. Should she have rinsed the carrots off as well? Seirei eyed them critically. They didn't look all that dirty the way the potatoes did. On the other hand, they had been dug out of the ground, too. Seirei glanced at the water she had used to wash the potatoes. It was brown, and muddy. After a few ticks, Seirei decided against using it to wash the sliced carrots off, so she just added them to the stew.

Then she began work on the potatoes. Using a knife, she cut the first one in half width wise. Then she cut the half she was working on in thirds length wise. Holding the three pieces together, she sliced the potato. The end result was a bunch of somewhat even chunks. Seirei added them to the stew, then did the same thing to the other half. Then she repeated the process with the rest of the potatoes.

When she was done, Seirei checked the fire. It had started to burn down a little, so she added another dense clump of twisted grass to it. Then she set the pot of stew on the fire to cook. Seirei didn't know exactly how long it would take to cook, but she did know that it would take bells. She also knew that once it was ready to be put on the fire, it would mostly cook itself, so Seirei felt confident that she could go off and do something else while she was waiting. As long as she remembered to check on it once in a while, it would probably be fine. Hopefully, anyway.

Seirei looked over to where Kairi was grazing. Thunder was playing nearby, and the sight made her smile softly. Since the two were near by, Seirei decided it might be a good time to practice putting a yvas on Kairi. If she wanted to become a person worth of Thunder's bond, she really needed to learn how to care for him properly. Learning how to ride was a part of that. Thunder himself was too young for her to work with much, but fortunately, his mother Kairi would allow her to practice on her...when she felt like it.

Unfortunately, today did not seem to be one of those days. When Seirei approached her slowly with the yvas, the mare raised her head, and perked her ears in her direction. She didn't appear to be opposed to the idea, so Seirei began to approach with more confidence. But when she got within range, Kairi pinned her ears back, and snaked her head towards her rapidly. Seirei froze, uncertainly. Instead of biting her, as Seirei feared, the mare grasped the yvas firmly with her teeth, and shook her head sharply. This had the effect of jerking the yvas out of Seirei's startled grasp.

Seirei walked over to where the yvas had fallen hesitantly. Kairi merely watched her with interest, so Seirei picked the yvas up. As soon as she did so, the mare charged her. Seirei took a step back, with a startled cry, certain that the mare was attacking her. But again, her target was the yvas. Kairi gripped it firmly in her teeth, and tore it out of her hands with a firm toss of her head.

By this time, Seirei had lost all interest in trying to put the yvas on Kairi. It was obvious to her that the mare wasn't in the mood to work with her. So she walked over to the yvas with the intention of putting it away. But Kairi didn't seem to like that idea, either. When Seirei picked up the yvas, Kairi snorted sharply, and tossed her head. She walked over to Seirei calmly. Seirei watched with confusion, wondering if the mare had decided to cooperate now that she had had her fun. But the mare stopped deliberately, stomping on Seirei's right foot in the process. Seirei cried out in pain as pain shot through the wounded limb. The worst of the pain radiated from her big toe, which she feared was broken because she had heard an unpleasant snapping sound as Kairi had stepped on her.

Seirei dropped the yvas, and hopped backwards on one foot, as she massaged the injured one gingerly. It didn't seem to ease the pain any, and the foot was already starting to swell slightly. She knew that she should see a healer, but she wasn't sure that she could make it all the way to the River Flower when she could barely stand to put any weight on the injured foot due to the pain. Especially when she was already off balance as a result of her swollen belly. So she retreated into her tent, and wrapped her foot as best she could with some cloth. Then she put her shoe back on. It was a tight fit, but she managed it. It was her hope that wrapping the injured foot, and the pressure of the shoe would keep the swelling down. She would have to ask someone to help her to the River Flower when they got the chance. Until then, this would have to do.

When Seirei was finished, she went out to retrieve the yvas. Only to see Thunder standing on top of it. She sighed, and hobbled over to the foal. She tried to give him a gentle push to encourage him to move off of the yvas without hurting him, but he was having nothing to do with it. And when she tried a second time, Kairi snorted sharply in what was clearly a warning. Seirei gave it up as a lost cause. She would have to pick the yvas up later, when the two striders were done with if...it there was anything left of it.

Seirei checked on the stew. It seemed to be cooking as it should be. When she speared one of the chunks of meat so she could take a look at it, she noticed that the outside was starting to turn brown. Since meat in the stews she had had in the past was usually brown, she took that as a good sign. When she was satisfied that the stew was doing okay on its own, Seirei retreated into her tent once more. She wanted to work on one of her carving projects while she waited for the stew to cook since Kairi was being stubborn. She gathered up the tools she would need for making beads, and selected a few branches, then sat just outside the tent where she wouldn't have as far to go when it came time to check on the stew again. Her foot throbbed in pain, but keeping her weight off of it seemed to help a little.

NoteSorry for the long post, and the delay in getting it out. I was trying to come up with things for Seirei to do so enough time would pass that the stew would be ready, or nearly so when Merevaika arrived.

Something For My Stomach

Postby Merevaika on December 19th, 2015, 9:43 pm

A delicious smell drifted her way as she squatted between the tents, watching and waiting. The Drykas laughed. The woman was obviously incompetent, from the way she fought with the horse, dropping the yvas, getting her foot stepped on. She disappeared inside, but only for a second, and reemerged to retrieve the yvas, this time fighting with the Strider's foal. Fool. For someone who lived among the Drykas, she knew little of their ways.

The girl checked the stew, Merevaika's next meal. The Drykas' fingers itched to run out and grab it, but she had to pick the right moment. Too early and the girl would stop her from even getting near. Too late and she would be caught red-handed. Merevaika was the type to want the silent, quick and unseen thefts - not a theft where she fought the one she was stealing from, however easy a target.

The girl, however, did not seem to want to leave. Once again disappearing into the tent, Merevaika decided to take the chance, leaping out towards the burning flames with her hand outstretched. One of the horses neighed, moving towards her, and Merevaika was forced to stop, holding one hand out. She kept her eyes down, away, not dangerous. When would the horse leave her alone? She only hoped it was soon.

With her bad luck, it didn't matter when the horse decided to leave her for the girl emerged again, sitting just outside the tent. Great. Surely the girl would have stay in the tent just a little longer. But no, now she sat outside. Hoping to make up for her being seen, Merevaika moved to the foal, a sharp warning from his mother. She signed hard, move, and then ran towards him, scaring him enough for him to step back.

With that, she snatched up the yvas, before being kicked hard across her back, knocking her to the ground. Holding in the pain, Merevaika dodged the strider's next blow as she rolled to the side, signing more things hurried. Peace, no danger, no danger. The strider snorted, and Merevaika moved quickly to the girl, dropping the yvas beside her. Thankfully, the mare didn't follow. Snorting from a distance.

"Are you carving?" she asked the girl hurriedly, quick intakes of breath from the hit. It wasn't bad, but had knocked the air out of her. Quickly, she formulated a plan. If she got the girl inside for just long enough, she could make the sprint away, snatching the stew in the process. "Do you have any work you can show me? I'm interested in maybe asking for you to make me something." That sounded realistic, didn't it? It was out of breath, masking other signs of emotion. Hopefully the girl would believe her, and give her a window of time just wide enough for her to escape with her meal.

Hopefully, yet it appeared that stealing from this particular target was already proving a lot harder than necessary.

oocI hope it was okay what I did there. If not, please say. If Seirei does choose to go into the tent, feel continue it like Merevaika tried to snatch the stew and run off.

Something For My Stomach

Seirei had peeled the bark off of one of the branches, and cut it into pieces. She was about to start drilling a hole in the first piece when she heard a commotion. All she could do was watch in startled shock as a vaguely familiar looking woman lunged at Thunder, who was still standing on the yvas. The stranger didn't hurt her strider in any way, but the foal was frightened enough that he took a step back, stepping off of the yvas in the process. Seirei was on her feet as quickly as she could manage. Who was this stranger, and why was she threatening her strider? Thunder was only a young foal!

But Seirei didn't have to do anything. As she watched, Kairi came to her foal's rescue, attacking the woman viciously. Seirei was of no mind to stop her, even if she could. The woman deserved anything she got after frightening Thunder the way she had. So she settled back down to her carving.

The woman approached her, and dropped the yvas next to her. Then she asked if she was carving. Seirei nodded, and the woman mentioned that she might have some work for her, and asked if she had any finished pieces she could show her. Seirei eyed the woman cautiously. Something seemed off about the request. The woman did look familiar in a vague way, but Seirei couldn't remember where she had seen her before. Had she mentioned being a carver when they'd met the first time? It sounded from the woman's statement that she had been looking for her specifically with a possible carving job. But until recently, she had been a captive. Very few Drykas would have wanted her to make something for them. And this woman was definitely a Drykas. How had this woman even known she was staying with the Dawnwhispers?

It was more likely that she was looking for a carver in general. But if that were the case, why was she here? Wouldn't it make more sense to seek out the Ruby Clan? The woman had no way of knowing she was a carver before she saw her working on her beads. So why had she come to the camp? Something definitely seemed off. But on the other hand...more business would definitely be a good thing. She might be able to trade some work for some much needed supplies. So Seirei allowed her suspicions to be eased.

"I do have a couple of things I could show you. I'll be right back."

Seirei stood, and retreated into the tent. As she was searching for a pouch of beads, she heard a sound that seemed suspicious to Seirei. Then Kairi snorted loudly, a short, sharp, aggressive sound. Without questioning it, Seirei headed back out as quickly as she could with her injured foot. She saw the woman trying to steal the stew she was making. Kairi appeared to be trying to stop her by getting in the woman's way as much as she could. With her ears pinned back against her head, it looked as though the mare hoped to take a big chunk out of the woman's arm.

"Stop, thief!" she cried.

Seirei hobbled over to the woman as quickly as she could. Kairi was still trying to block the thief, so it looked as though she would make it in time. Fury overwhelmed Seirei, banishing her normal insecurities to the winds.

"How dare you try to steal from us! Go hunt your own food!"

Seirei drew back her right arm, and unless the woman blocked her enraged attack, she would slap her right in the face.

NoteFeel free to escape with the stew so you can complete your challenge. :) But if at all possible, I need Seirei to be successful in slapping Merevaika for my own seasonal challenge. As far as Kairi's interference, I see her as trying to block Merevaika's escape route with her own body, but feel free to come up with another interpretation.

Something For My Stomach

Postby Merevaika on December 31st, 2015, 10:04 am

The girl returned to the tent, beginning to rummage around. Merevaika turned, dashing towards the stew and cradling it in her arms as she tried to leave with it. The mother strider seemed to have other ideas. She moved into the way, snorting and ears pinned back, ready to fight. At the horse's snorting, the girl hobbled out of the tent, yelling for Merevaika to stopped.

She yelled at her some more but Merevaika ignored the angry little girl. She was young, injured and small enough to be no bother to her. The horse, on the other hand, was actually a problem, with body language warning Merevaika not to make off with the stew.

Unfortunately, that was exactly what Merevaika was going to. She turned, finding the girl right by her, arm raised to slap. With no free hands or time, she had no way to stop her, and found herself being slapped in the face. Tears beaded at her eyes from the impact, but she didn't let that stop her.

The Drykas woman darted to one side, dodging the woman and getting behind her as a shield from the horse. Quickly, she started shuffling back, moving one hand to the knife at her belt. This she extended, growling as if to warn them that any further struggle would be bad for them. After all, a girl against an armed woman wouldn't be the best idea for the girl.

Then, second later, she turned and ran, pounding away from the tents and towards where none could be found. Towards where no one would want to run, not alone and unarmed, not for a simple bowl of stew. The food sloshed a little over the sides of the bowl, but not enough to be noticeable. Merevaika slowed a little, walking fast with purpose. People started to greet her like they would greet any other. Not like they would greet a thief.

It was only when she really reached the grasses outside the city when she looked back. Merevaika crouched down, hidden by the rabbitbrush, stew in hand. She began to eat, savoring how it was still warm. Merevaika smiled. Surely this was the best food. So little effort, with such a good result.
