The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

Chiona allowed Alses a few moments of space to gather her thoughts. Silence enveloped the vast hall as they stood together. The concern could be felt tangibly in her aura, transparent as she was in the company of a friend.

"Let's walk and walk." She suggested, gesturing toward the stairwell. "After all, it's a long way down. Is it safe to assume you're ready to go?" This was obviously a rhetorical question. Chiona waited patiently for Alses to gather the scattered pieces of her constitution before the two of them began whispering their way back from whence they came.

The long stretch of the Twuele was maddeningly quiet. The usual bustle of its vast halls seemed to have fallen away over the course of Alses' meeting. These sort of lulls in activity however, were typical of a city with large governance but a small population. It was aptly timed, for it was obvious the news had left the otherwise unflappable Ethaefal in a rather poor frame of mind.

"I knew this would happen," Chiona whispered in quiet fury. For a woman with so many skirts, she moved with remarkable agility. "Johelm has been pressing his agenda for years and years. Father and I pulled all the strings we could, but he finally managed to leverage Aysel and Talora into compliance with these ridiculous demands." Her mouth snapped shut, pulling into a tight line.

"That myopic old fool..." She whispered acidly. Vitriol could be tasted in every syllable.

"Anyway," she finally continued, after a brief silence, "I have some heartening news for you, if you're of a mind." Light mischievously touched Chiona's eyes as it was wont to do. Her lips twitched up into a demure smile. Artfully, she shielded her aura from Alses' watchful eye and undoubtedly, this would not be lost on the Ethaefal.

"It has come to my attention that someone has bought your house." The two women continued down the seemingly endless skyglass stair, which bought Chiona plenty of time. "Who would do such a thing is beyond me. However..."

"It just so happens that I know the purchaser of Elysium Hall. I imagine I could even get you a good price. Under one condition..."

In the middle of their descent, Chiona turned to her old friend and gave her a brilliant smile, the kind she often used to stun unsuspecting victims into flushed silence. She looked akin to the cat who'd gotten into the cream, in spite of her otherwise august presence.

"You come back and work for me. For us. These students could use some solid instruction when the time comes, for these sanctions won't last forever..." She paused here, the silence laden with implication.

"I promise, I'll even sell it back to you at a bargain."

The End of Malfeasance

Cool marble, warm wood. Simple, concrete, physical things. Anchors, against the roaring tide of unreality that threatened to rise and wash her away.

How long she remained there, sagged against the doors, eyes closed, just breathing, focusing on the near-silent rush of air in and out of her lungs, she didn’t know and didn’t care. Alses would have stayed there longer, but for the words of her companion and friend, waiting patiently nearby.

Reluctantly, she opened her eyes and pushed off, determinedly placing one foot in front of another, a plodding though steady gait that easily matched with Chiona’s own, the two of them proceeding in sync down the near-deserted marble halls and stairways of the great tower.

Some warning might have been nice,” she said tiredly, and without any real trace of venom to her tone or her words. “Not that we could ever have been properly prepared. Although we might have retained a brace of lawyers and let them argue the law and our august Lord and Lady to a standstill.

She lifted her eyes to meet Chiona’s, quizzical and not quite daring to hope. “Any good news would be appreciated,” Alses replied fervently. “Anything for a glimpse of the sun amidst the stormclouds. Which are very black and dark at the moment.

Alses listened restively to Chiona’s lilting, mischievous voice, to the almost theatrical innocence, and her magic clued her in as her friend clamped down – obviously and deliberately – on her own aura. In response, a thousand seeking ropes of glittering golden djed twisted themselves into existence, looking to latch and feed and slip through the shield to feast on rich impressions.

Quick off the mark,” Alses remarked, slightly sourly, failing to mention that one of the ideas buzzing around her brain had been to ask Chiona to be her proxy in the reacquisition of her home in any case. Denying Alses was one thing, tarred as she was by her associations with the rest of the now-defunct Council. Denying Chiona Dusk, on the other hand, particularly if Alses’ involvement was kept on the quiet side, was quite another.

House Dusk triumphant,” Alses remarked with a wry quirk of her lips. She had liked teaching, and House Dusk paid well. Yes, it would be an eminently suitable job, a base from which she could regroup and rebuild, if nothing else. “Always rocking back onto an even keel and coming out on top of it all. Good thing we never got rid of our Tower insignia. Of course we’ll return and take up an instructor’s post again – provided we get that good price.

A scowl crossed her face for a moment, a dark thunderhead. “We’ll gouge Aysel and Talora for every topaz kina of it, in the fullness of time,” she promised. “How much are you going to charge me?
