Feeling homesick, Azira tries to become better acquainted with the city, and its denizens, in an effort to adjust to her new home

The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

It was a fascinating experience listening to the Ethaefal talk. Her choice of words could be quite strange compared to others that she'd heard speaking Common but the cadence of her speech was simply wonderful. Her voice was pleasantly warm and melodious and Azira thought she could listen to her all day. She had such fluency that the huntress envied her more than a little. It wasn't just her voice that was fascinating, but her face as well. Every expression appeared exquisite on her divine features. What would twist the features of an ordinary person in to an ugly mask became a sublime visage on Alses. She'd give anything to watch the movements of her face all the time, to trace her features, to explore her delicate lips. She wished that she could draw so that she could capture her likeness. Not that such a thing could be possible; no one could possibly encapsulate her heavenly being in mere mortal materials.

Focus, woman! Listen to what she's saying and stop obsessing over how she looks, she snapped at herself. Mentally shaking herself to turn her thoughts back to the here and now.

The other was reacting to what she said, making comments and asking questions and Azira had to struggle to keep herself in the moment rather than drifting in to her former trains of thought.

"Blood is not for everyone. I am used to it. I do not... notice it anymore. I can understand your... discomfort," she explained with a sympathetic smile. But no, you are right. It works because no one starves. I am just used to something different. At home, we do starve." She shrugged as if it was no big deal. It was something that she was accustomed to and had grown to expect yet there were other places that just didn't seem to have to deal with the difficulties with which the Inarta had long contended. The race as a whole did not tend to look underfed, the Dek being something of an exception, but that was merely their build. They looked healthy and they had a great strength that allowed them to survive the difficulties Wind Reach presented. She wasn't so sure that the citizens of Lhavit were quite as hardy.

Alses certainly had a lot to say for herself and she wanted to know more about the huntress, that was obvious. Azira was beginning to wonder if she'd get any more information about the woman when she seemed to recollect that the Inarta had also been asking questions. She let off a stream of information, some of which she clearly expected Azira to understand and one little snippet that piqued her curiosity because it was withheld. She knew Lhavit had powerful families that each had a tower to themselves but she couldn't really remember much about them aside from the fact that there were three of them. Plus there was something about each having its own specialised magic. This was obviously what Alses was on about although the redhead was not familiar with what auristics was. She decided that she was allowed another question before she answered the ones that the Ethaefal had asked.

"The Dusk Tower is for... auristics? I do not know it, the magic. What does it do? I know if reimancy. We use it at home. Earth is the normal one. But you say it is not your best magic? What other magic can you do? I have read that there are many magics but I would not have seen them, " she explained eagerly. She did not often have a chance to talk to magic users and Alses seemed to be a special one indeed. She could heal herself, she could use this auristics and could do more, possibly much more. So of course Azira was more than a little curious.

"You asked me questions though. First, I answer. I came in middle of winter. I have not been here long. Still it is very strange. It gets more strange as days pass. Do you understand?" she asked anxiously, worried she wouldn't get her meaning across. "The Unforgiving is like home. I know it, it is not new for me. I feel... happy there. It may have secrets but I do not know them. I only know where to find what I want to kill. Hunting is something I do for long time. I started at 11. The snow," she waved at the light flurries dancing down around them, "It makes it hard to hunt now. Very dangerous. I am less sure here. On a clear day, it is no problem. But you are right, not everyone can hunt. Some find it hard to kill. It is not... right to them." She thought of Khara's squeamishness when Azira had gotten her to break a rabbit's neck. It had gotten to her in a way that the huntress had understood. She had been like that too, although perhaps more traumatised because she had been so much younger. Her mouth had sunk in to a grim line but she forced a smile for the other woman's benefit.

"You are a teacher of magic for Chiona Dusk?" she asked in an effort to change the subject. They must almost be at the library now and so only a small amount of conversation more should be necessary to see them to their journey's end. "Chiona Dusk is an important woman?"
OOCAzira is more than a little infatuated. My sincerest apologies but the girl has a mind of her own. What can you do? :P I figure another post or two more and then they can part ways at the library. Perhaps with the Miz equivalent of each other's phone numbers? ;)

OOCHehe, that's all right! Alses is bent as a spoon anyway, and she has a thing for tomboys...

Wind Reach starves?” Alses frowned. “That is…unsettling. Particularly since the Wind Eagles that come here trade for craftwork, in the main, rather than food.” She sighed; gone were the days when she could actually have attempted to do something about it. For the moment; Alses had Plans, as she always did. Now, though, was a time to retreat and regroup, to build up her strength and entrench her position. Literally, as well as metaphorically.

She shook her head, more as a physical aid to mental focus rather than anything else, drawing together the disparate tracks of her thoughts into something coherent – if a little rambling.

The Dusk Tower is the home of House Dusk, one of the city’s great families,” she explained. “They have a tradition of auristics, and a few other magics too, and so they teach their own and promising outsiders who can be adopted into the House, in the fullness of time. As for what auristics is” Alses spread her arms somewhat helplessly. “In truth, it would be far easier to show you than try to explain – it’s not a magic that really lends itself well to explanation - but we don’t have the materials to hand. It is a magic of revelation; where you see grass and stone and trees and people, I see wonders. The flow of djed through the world, great events burned into the fabric of the planet, people’s ideas and hopes and dreams – an aura is the radiation of the soul. For me, the world is swimming in colour and sensation, a thousand times richer than the world you experience, and with skill the colours and smells and sensations it brings can be interpreted.” She gave the fiery redhead a wry, self-deprecating smile. “It comes in handy every so often. And we can eat all the cake I desire without having to actually consume anything; it can serve as a proxy for the senses. That is,” Alses added, belatedly reminding herself, once again, that her companion wasn’t fluent in the language, and hoping that too much of what she’d been trying to say hadn’t been lost in translation, “A substitute.

Her eyes grew pensive as she considered Azira’s next question, then took a hard, bright, intelligent fire, her lips curving up automatically into a wider, less-guarded smile than most of those that had gone before, a lifting of the Ethaefalen armour to expose the shuddering rawness of the soul beneath. “I am also Lhavit’s lady magesmith; if you need an artifact to last until the end of time, or something normally barred by physical laws, you come to me. I can make miracles!” Alses’ rich voice was alive and vibrant, her eyes sparkling; it was evident that here, with this most finicky and demanding of disciplines, was her passion and her true delight. “Robes that can turn aside a sword or reflect a warhammer’s smash without a care, compasses that will always lead you to some treasured thing no matter where it is, and so much more. Provided we have the time, and enough gold to fill Port Tranquil, of course.” She decided not to mention Aysel and Talora’s attempted ban; revealing such a weakness, a division and a split in the usual façade of unity, would not be useful. Yet.

She ticked off a point on her fingers, gazing skywards for a moment, sobering. “As a consequence of my work as a magesmith, I’m quite good at glyphing, too. Awfully useful in support; a well-prepared glypher is formidable indeed. Useful for making some of the nicer trappings of civilised life, too. Oh, and we’re beginning to learn Animation; it’s the art of giving a semblance of life to an inanimate object. The city relies on it, although you’d never know unless you knew where to look.” She blinked. “I think that’s everything. Arcane arts-wise, anyway.

Alses pulled an involuntary face at the mention of winter. “Winter,” she muttered, with a reflexive shiver. “Not our favourite season. Even with the skyglass, winter’s a time for holing up indoors with a big fire and as many blankets and cushions and books as possible. Syna knows we’d not emerge at all during the snows, if I had my way. Sleep right through until civilised daylight hours return.

Alses let her eyes linger on the Inarta as she talked, golden eyes gentle and unassuming, drifting leisurely over short, jaggedly-cut red hair and then following the curve of the oval face towards the plump, cupid-bow mouth, a habitual scowl at the world tugging at its edges. There was no harm in looking – ah, and were those piercing holes? A little, private smile, a secret little delight, tugged at Alses’ lips for a moment before she recalled herself and formulated another answer for the curious Inarta.

I know what you mean; Lhavit’s a strange city. Stay awhile, though, and you’ll find she has a way of getting into your heart without you noticing and not letting go.” There was a fond smile on Alses’ face as she spoke of the city like a close friend, beloved and cherished. “It is our beautiful Diamond of Kalea, our Star in the North, and I’ll not see it dim. Hopefully you’ll grow to love it as well as I do, and be happy here as well as out there in the wastes of the Unforgiving.

Even had Alses not been a skilled aurist, even had she not had the benefit of an excellent pair of eyes, she’d surely have noticed the smile drop from the girl’s face and be replaced with a grim line, before a caricature of the previous grin brokenly forced its way back. “Sometimes, killing is necessary,” she murmured, thinking – as she always did at such times – of Hayani. “It is neither good nor bad, just something that has to be done.” Alses let the moment stretch, a fragile bubble amid the bustle of Lhavit, before breaking it with a flourishing gesture forwards towards an unmistakeable colossus on the near horizon, still some way off but drawing closer with every step they took.

Look, there’s the Library, and the Basilika next to it,” she remarked, eyes on Azira as the girl drank in the enormous bulk of the building, all its towers and minarets and domes, its pillared colonnades and glittering ranks of windows flashing in the light.

And yes, effectively,” she added, in response to Azira’s question on Chiona. “We work for the Dusk Tower itself, but it was Chiona who asked us to; she knows me best, after all, and Syna knows she has the authority.” Alses replied with a light, delighted laugh. “Chiona is the heiress apparent to the Dusk Tower; she’ll become Lady Dusk and the Matriarch of the House when her father dies. Loyal, kind, manipulative in the best sense of the word and very capable…there are few people we’d like better to have on our side in a crisis.

Times They Are A-Changing (Alses)

Postby Azira on April 27th, 2016, 11:52 pm

The idea that her home struggled for food appeared to have distressed the Ethaefal, something that warmed the Inarta's heart more than a little. They were not her people and yet she cared enough to seem genuinely upset about it. She could understand how it must look from the other woman's point of view. Wind Reach traded craftwork for more craftwork when they could be getting food. The huntress was fairly sure that they did trade with Lhavit for a small amount of food but it would be for luxuries rather than necessities, hence why she couldn't be certain about what they received; the Endal were the only ones well off enough for those. It was a matter of pride as well of course, and a touch of practicality. They couldn't go relying on others for food when they should be working their own arses working for it. Besides, the Inarta fed their own or else, they mostly starved together. She didn't think that she could explain it in a way that would make sense to her companion so instead Azira merely shrugged and responded in Common, "It is complicated."

The Inarta didn't want Alses to worry too much, as she already seemed to be doing, and so she was eager to change the subject and so direct her thoughts elsewhere. However, she recollected herself and began explaining about House Dusk and what she thought. It was clear that this was something for which she had some passion because she settled back in to zigzagging speech pattern as she tried to explain auristics to Azira. Seeing the woman's interest in something was a nice change from their more sombre conversation from a few moments before. She was obviously doing her best to convey the sense of the magic to the young woman but for the most part, it was lost on her. It was something to use instead of the senses, something that gave her the ability to see souls and eat food without eating it. Well, there was more to it then that but the attempt that she had made to understand it had fallen somewhat flat, especially when food was brought in to it. A crease appeared between the redhead's brows, the groove deepening the harder she tried to process the explanation. At last, she came out with a slow reply, the skin of her forehead gradually smoothing again as she spoke.

"I think it is something you must feel... no, experience. It is like if I tried to explain how flying feels. I could describe it but... it would not be understood as well. It must be done by you. Maybe if I knew some other magic, it would help me to understand but I do not. It does not matter. Thank you for trying." She smiled her appreciation, hoping that the other wouldn't feel like she'd failed. She had tried to explain the unexplainable after all, there was no failure in that in the same way that there could be no success either.

The passion that flared in to life in the Ethaefal's expression as she moved on to talk about being a magesmith was truly stunning to see. What she had seen before when Alses had talked about auristics was a pale echo of what she saw before her. That had been polite interest in comparison to this pure joy at the mere mention of the craft she practised. Azira found herself staring up in to the other's face, barely noticing where they were so rapt was she as she gazed up at the woman's ecstatic features. She had never heard of this magesmithing before but she could understand what it could do as Alses outlined clear examples which she had no problem comprehending. How the woman could do such things was a mystery, it sounded like a god-like power but in the hands of this immortal it seemed proper.

Glyphing was a more mundane art but one which she had a vague familiarity with from her days as a Yasi. She had a fuzzy recollection from her bendi in the Glass Reverie that glyphs had been used to cause flame to come out of a metal rod, but she couldn't remember much about it. Animation was new to her but this explanation was simpler, if a little disconcerting. Making things seem alive that weren't alive and weren't supposed to be? There was something unsettling about that all right, it sounded unnatural. She gave a snort of laughter. She came from a place where there were Eagles which were big enough to ride and could talk to you, and was currently talking to a being that had fallen from the heavens. She couldn't really decide what was unnatural when she had accepted these things without hesitation; they simply were the way they were.

"You know much magic. It is... amazing. We do not use much magic at home. Some use reimancy for moving stone and controlling the... fire water that comes up sometimes. I do not know any and I do not know a better word for what comes from the mountain. It is hot and comes from deep underground. It is like a river of fire. In Nari, it is lava but in your language..." She sighed, waving her hand a little as if to dismiss it as unimportant. It did irritate her though, not having the words she wanted. She just hadn't had the need to say lava in Common before and it wasn't like there was any around here that she could point to and ask for the word.

She could understand the woman's dislike for Winter but she also knew from experience that being holed away for that period of time did not go well. She was lucky in some ways that she had to hunt because it meant that she actually got to leave her mountain home to go outside, unlike most of her brethren. Azira doubted the Ethaefal would like it as well as she thought she would. "In Wind Reach, it is always warm in winter. A city inside is good for that, not like here. During winter, only hunters go outside though. You would get your wish there... you might not like it though. The others, they go a little... mad without the air. I think it is because they are not free. They cannot go outside. They do not get to choose," she explained.

The huntress coloured a little as she gradually became aware of the woman's appraisal of her. It was very casual but yet the girl grew self-conscious, wondering how she must look to this creature of beauty personified. Azira became acutely aware of how ragged her haircut must look, how uneven and mismatched the ends were. What else the Ethaefal would see she shuddered to think, but she found herself ashamed of her appearance. A look that had allowed her some power in deterring men could have the same effect on women.

Well, you couldn't attract her anyway; she's more than human and too high for me, she thought, injecting some bitter reality in to her silly line of thinking. There was no point believing such a divine being could be attainable. There was no sense in pining after her. Not only would it be a complete waste of energy but it'd be stupid too; they'd only just met after all. Better to focus on other things, anything else at all.

"I shall see if Lhavit becomes less strange for me. Maybe I will like it in the future but... Wind Reach is my home. Always," she stated firmly. No doubt the uniqueness of Lhavit would come to appeal to her but it would never hold the place in her heart that her home had. Where she had been born, raised and lived for the vast majority of her life had left a very clear stamp on her soul that nothing could remove. The mere suggestion that Lhavit could usurp Mt. Skyinarta wasn't something she could allow to pass by without comment. However, Alses's neutral view of killing was met with silence from the huntress. Silently, she concede that the woman had a point but she wasn't going to get in to a debate about how there was more to it than that. This was neither the time nor the place.

The woman had looked ahead, finally paying attention as she tried to distance herself from the Ethaefal somewhat. The Bharani Library hardly needed an introduction for the huntress had seen it long before it had been announced. This place of curving majesty with its points reaching skywards and its walls catching Syna's light in the most beautiful ways was home to Lhavit's knowledge. That such a place could house only books! It was so magnificent that Azira was almost moved to tears at the wonders that must lie within, her vision blurring a little as the salt water welled up. She blinked rapidly to clear her view and gave the Basilika her attention as well. It was not as beautiful or as a glorious a testament to skill which the library was but it was still unlike anything she was used to seeing. People thronged about it, a chatter of voices rising in a general cacophony y of sound. If she was nearer and chose a particular place to listen then she could distinguish one voice from another to hear the words it spoke but it wasn't her destination.

As they drew closer and closer to the library's entrance, Azira realised with a pang that herself and Alses would soon have to part ways. She had greatly enjoyed the woman's company for the help she'd given and the knowledge she'd shared. It was nice to have met someone in this city full of strangers, albeit someone who was a glorious being and far above her in rank by virtue of existing in this mortal realm. Of course, the Inarta knew where to find her now, she'd divulged her place of work after all so there was the possibility of interaction in the future. It might be foolish to even think about dropping in upon her unannounced merely to have a chat and fawn over her divine perfection. The lure of such a plan was unmistakeable however, and she could always ask about it and see how Alses responded. There was no sense in forcing her company on to someone who didn't want it.

"It seems you have important friends," she began, choosing her Common words with care. "A friend like her, she may let you do things others cannot. Perhaps it might be possible to visit you where you work, at the Dusk Tower, if that is something you would like. Would that be all right with you? If I have need to see you, I mean. I would not like to disturb." She tried to keep the hopefulness from her face, desperate not to reveal the extent of her eagerness for Alses to respond with an affirmative. Such a thing would overjoy her, but she didn't want the Ethaefal to determine that that was the case. She waited, trying to stamp out any impatience for a reply that might manifest in the form of fidgeting or hand wringing and the like.

OOCI think we're very close to wrap-up now :)

Evidently,” Alses replied with a frown, a part of her mind still occupied with the problem of Wind Reach and its starvation issue. Her frown only deepened when the whispering shimmer of Azira’s burning aura let her know that her attempted explanation of auristics had fallen hopelessly flat. And no matter if the girl tried to make her feel better; Alses was supposed to be good with words, for Syna’s sake! Even if her listener wasn’t particularly au courant with the intricacies of the language.

Perhaps that was the problem; Alses was used to a certain academic standard, and over the years had subconsciously tailored her style and mode of speech to that standard. It worked well when speaking to other scholars and mages, but Azira had skilfully and obliviously exposed some of its limitations.

Food for thought, certainly, even if Alses delighted in complexity.

You’re welcome,” Alses said sourly, mouth set in a thin, displeased line. “If we had paper and ink handy, we’d show you in a flash. But of course, the one time such a thing might be useful on a short walk through the city, we decide in all perversity to leave our writing materials at home. Such is life,” she added with a sigh and a wry quirk of her eyebrows, before changing the subject.

I’d like to fly, one day, I think.” A smile and a quick look heavenwards restored her normal, sunny disposition, clearing the stormclouds of discontent from her features. “Syna knows Altelo Twilight wouldn’t mind us learning. Lord Twilight,” she clarified. “His family are the city’s premier Morphers – they can change their bodies into almost anything living.

Alses shrugged lightly, changing the subject a bit. “Magic is a wonderful and beautiful tool,” she replied. “Up to a point, of course. You’re right that it’s wondrous – although also terrible – and I delight in it as I do few other things. Lhavit is a haven for mages,” she added. “Magic built the city, and magic sustains it; people here have a refreshingly enlightened approach to the arcane. Which in turn makes the mages of the city fight all the harder in its defence, since we don’t have to hide ourselves and practice our spells in secret.” Alses listened carefully to the description the frustrated Inarta girl was giving, trying to align the mental images her words evoked with what Alses knew and was familiar with.

You might be talking about magma,” she said eventually and slightly doubtfully. “Reimancy’s not my field, and nor is geology, really.” Alses changed the subject quickly, not liking to dwell on areas of ignorance, and in any case the girl was speaking again, explaining a little more of Wind Reach’s more unusual features.

Even the skyglass can only do so much,” she agreed at length. “It’s warm, of course, which is a great blessing for houses and means I don’t freeze my feet to the floor in the mornings, but it’s rather less effective out in the open.” A wry grin. “The city’s architects and planners have done their best; the winds are baffled and broken by the layout of the streets and squares, but there’s only so much you can do against Winter. Hunkering down inside a mountain sounds very warm and cosy, but we’d go loopy without the sunlight, you’re right.” She pulled a face. “I went into an underground ruin, once. For the good of the city and at Syna’s command, of course; nothing else would have compelled me down there.” Alses shuddered, expressively. “One of the worst experiences I’ve had the misfortune to suffer, all in all.

Alses blinked and waved a hand in surprised demurral. “We meant no slight on Wind Reach,” she said quickly. “And we have no real issue with your visiting us at the Dusk Tower, but…I teach,” Alses explained with a half-shrug. “There’s little enough of interest to see when I’m lecturing, and you’d need a touch of magic to see what my classes see in any case.” She paused, and then added, an artfully-constructed afterthought: “I don’t mind visitors at home, though. Elysium Hall is my abode; anyone on Tenten Peak can direct you there, if the fancy ever takes you.

Times They Are A-Changing (Alses)

Postby Azira on May 14th, 2016, 7:11 pm

The huntress had done her best to ensure the woman wouldn't take her lack of understanding too hard but she'd clearly failed. She chewed her lip as she picked up on the sourness in the Ethaefal's voice, a tone she found she didn't like in the other's melodic voice. She didn't know if she was annoyed with Azira for failing to understand her or whether she was annoyed with herself. She must have thought that she was explaining it very clearly and now realised that it had become completely lost in translation. The Inarta didn't even know what she might do or say to provide some comfort or to soften the blow. Instead, she listened to the other in silence, wondering if she was being serious about the ink and paper or if she was being sarcastic and it wasn't coming across very well. The change of subject provided her with a way out of giving the incorrect response. However, any worry she might have had vanished with the talk of morphing.

"They can... change their bodies? You mean, they could grow wings? You could actually fly with magic?" Azira gasped, expressions of horror and fascination warring across her features. "That doesn't sound natural. What if something went wrong or you could not be as before? No, I would not learn if I was you. It could ruin your beauty and it would be a shame." She shook her head, clear disapproval on her face. She shot a quick glance at her companion, a blush threatening as she realised how her comment might have been construed--quite correctly. She held her tongue, not wanting to dig herself in to a hole, which was a distinct possibility. It was probably best to be careful about what you said around Alses. After all, the huntress hadn't missed the casual mention of two of the chief families in Lhavit and the familiarity of the other's tone as she spoke of them. Whoever the Ethaefal was, she was a powerful one indeed. Dropping hints that she found the woman attractive probably wouldn't do the redhead any favours and the only one who would be hurt over such a thing would be her. She would have to tread carefully, for her own sake.

She added the word 'magma' to her Common vocabulary, making a mental note to check with someone who understood what she meant. She trusted that Alses must have some notion of what she'd been talking about or she wouldn't have volunteered a word at all so it was probably correct. The Ethaefal seemed quite knowledgeable so it was a safe assumption to make. As if to prove the Inarta's point, she began to explain the layout of Lhavit and it was clear that a great deal of thought had gone in to it to ensure the city's denizens didn't freeze. A great deal of planning must have gone in to Wind Reach's design as well, she realised, considering that tunnelling and room construction had to take so many things in to consideration. A groundquake could cause utter havoc and countless deaths in areas that had been safely placed as well; she was incredibly glad that such responsibility didn't fall to her.

"Underground is not for everyone. We do not know any different. We are born there, we live there and probably die there. We like outside but we are used to being in a mountain. No slight," she explained, smiling sympathetically at Alses's discomfort. She had seen one or two who were genuinely terrified by the idea of living with such a volume of rock above their heads but they were rare individuals and they weren't natives. To an Inarta, Wind Reach was nothing to be afraid of, unless they had brain sickness of course. People with that could think and act very strangely after all.

They were drawing closer to the library now, heading up to its doors but the huntress froze in her tracks at the other's suggestion, almost tripping over her own feet in her confusion. "You would have me at your home?" she blurted in disbelief. Here she was thinking that she couldn't grow too friendly with this woman and now she'd gone and invited her to her house! It didn't necessarily mean anything. It could have just be offered out of pity, a friendly invitation that she never expected Azira to take her up on. She promised herself that she wouldn't show up at the Ethaefal's door, not if she knew what was good for her. Still, it was a risky invitation on the other's part, unless she actually wanted her to come.

"If it is what you want... thank you. I will remember," she mumbled. The young woman suddenly found herself in an awkward situation. She could not offer the other a similar invitation--gods forbid such a woman would come to her poky room!--and to do so would probably be insulting. The idea that such a person would ever want or need to see her was laughable. What she ought to do in response was unknown to her so the Inarta decided that the best thing to do would be to avoid it altogether. Resisting the urge to bolt so Alses wouldn't suspect she was actually running away from her, Azira closed the distance to the library door and slipped quickly inside. She had every intention of darting out of sight to hide as soon as an opportunity presented itself and if she had her way, the Ethaefal was not going to find her again this day.
