Clyde just smiled and shook his head, waving his free hand in a dismissive gesture as if the name was unimportant, and the explanation the pycon repeated was incomplete and unsubstantiated.
“Names are but words, they don't encapsulate the entirety of a thing. I've heard it called that, but it is both more and less. As is true with any name. Such a name only scratches the meager surface meaning.”
“Whoever explained it to you did not do a good job, if they left it at that, or did not understand it. Bah! That's like describing a horse, but then only explaining its legs. Imagine if you then tried to draw it? You'd draw a horses legs, but you'd not draw a horse.”
He was interested to hear the pycon confirm the magic that he used, the flux, which was one Clyde was familiar with. One of his earlier apprentices had used it, and so far about every pycon in Syliras he had met had used it. He was starting to wonder what that was about, how it was that they'd all come to learn it... Surely a common source?
“Flux again? Where have all you pycon been learning it? I met that other pycon, and you mentioned another who you thought I meant when I said the one I'd met... I'd be interested to know where you all were initiated.”
Clyde shrugged and let out a sigh, before continuing on.
“Anyways, I'm familiar with The Flux. I don't partake, its not really my tune, but I've heard its song enough times to be familiar.”
Smiling at the pycon, Clyde took on a distant look, waving his fingers in a pattern as if he was painting with his fingers.
“I prefer to make. Cha here is a fine example. She's no ordinary chunk of wood, and her being blue has nothing to do with it. But the making kind of magic, well it tends to take more tutelage and care than more personal magics like The Flux. The Flux, as all of those types do, works on instinct. Like learning how to use a sword by using a sword. Not all magic is like that... ”
Looking at the pycon once more, Clyde took on a more serious demeanor, made only less so by the fact that he was still drawing invisible symbols with his free hands fingers, like a child drawing in the mud.
“But such tutelage isn't something undertaken lightly, and its not for everyone. I've been properly trained, which I imagine few enough in Syliras can say. I've had a broader view of things, more than just what one learns by seeing one or two magics, or even using them. Its all underpinned on the same sheet, even if the names are written on different faces of the parchment. You just have to know how to tilt your head right, to line them all up and make a proper pattern.”
“Not everyone is suited to learn such things, or has what it takes, or is worth the investment. I don't even bother with half of those who ask. And you'd be surprised how many people ask, even in a city like Syliras.”
