Fall of 514AV, 13th

It wasn’t that Summer didn’t trust the city it was just…she didn’t trust the city. It was too easy to fit in here. There were looks, it would be strange for there not to be, but there wasn’t outright hostility. No one seemed to care about what she was. Summer wanted it to be a good thing but she knew it wouldn’t last. It never did.

The way the city seemed to try so hard to not notice made worms crawl beneath her skin. They pushed and nibbled but could not tear through. It left the half-Zith at odds. Her mind stuck on the precipice of disaster but not quite falling off. She knew, she knew, the other foot would drop and the waiting was driving her mad. The absolute worse part was the small sliver of herself that said it was all in her head and that Alvadas was fine. Summer knew better than to trust that voice.

What she needed was a way to clear head. The best way for her to that, she had decided, was to leave Alvadas. So close to Fall she wouldn’t get anywhere and going back to Syliras was not an option. Summer would have to settle for a walk outside the city in the hopes she might catch herself some dinner.

Summer had loaded her satchel with a full waterskin, dried apples, flint & steel, dagger and her cloak. In her belt pouch were ten slingshot bullets. Tucked into her belt was the slingshot. Determined she had asked for the easiest way out of the city then walked, and walked until she found it.

The gate looked different from the exit. When she turned to face it, the world dully and normal again, she felt like vomited food. The half-Zith curled her lip in distaste at the notion then marched across the open expanse. Every few minutes Summer would turn her head to look behind. It wasn’t that she missed the city, it was so she could keep it in sight. It had been a long time since Summer had to be in the woods on her own (actually, she’d never been on her own) and she’d rather not die in the surrounding landscape.

Speaking of, it was a barren scape. Summer had come in from the docks, unable to truly see the outer parts of the city aside from sea and wall. Now, now she could see. Her eyes took in the browning grass, dying shrubbery in surprise. Compared to the forests of Syliras it was empty. Summer could see sparse trees that sprung from the ground without pattern, though without their all their leaves they looked like sprouts. The rest, she seen, were sharp looking and fuller. The half-Zith had no idea what she would hunt. What could possibly survive in such a land?

Yet, rather than turn around Summer walked forward fearlessly. She’d find something. Rats, mice, squirrels. Meat was meat and if she added some salt to it, it would taste delicious. Summer kept her gaze on the land before her, no longer worried she would lose sight of the city. Each tree she passed, Summer paused, peering up it for something small and ediable and each time she would find nothing.

The Perils of Hunting (Yisanareysin)

Alvadas was a wonderful city, truly. But the area surrounding it left much to be desired. It was frustrating, having to walk for so long to be out of sight of the city before he could shift and hunt. At least there was no real shortage of prey here. It wasn't the bounty that Sylira had been, but compared to the Eyktolian desert, it was downright brimming with food.

Today, Rey was hunting rabbits. Or hares, he'd never learnt the difference between the two. Specifically, he was hunting one particular rabbit. Or, rather, he was tracking it. More accurately, he was trying to track it. He had its scent, but actually finding it was a lot harder than he had expected. "Following the scent" mostly involved wandering around until the scent got noticeable fainter and then going in the other direction. In this stupid, zig zaggy way he was slowly following the animal, although for all he knew, it was long gone.

Five more chimes, he told himself grumpily. If he didn't find the petching thing within five chimes he was turning back and finding a mouse or something. Something easier to chase. Fortunately, Caiyha, or whomever it was that watched over hunters, was smiling on him that day. The scent grew stronger, and he slowed his movements as the heat signature of the little rabbit came into view. It looked to be nibbling on something, and was hopefully not looking at him.

Well, what was the worst that could happen. He sprang out at the rabbit, and it took off like an arrow. He slithered after it, cursing his lack of arms in his snake form. It was right in front of him, and he was faster than it, but the petching thing was far more agile. It kept changing directions, and Rey kept falling for it.

He chased the stupid thing furiously, dodging under logs and around bushes, but it was slowly but surely getting away.

How humiliating. Outwitted by a rabbit.

Summer should’ve have looked down. If she’d looked down she’d have been able to properly track it. Since she didn’t, the tiny squirrel ran between her legs unhindered and out of sight before Summer could so much as draw her sling. The half-Zith made a rude nose with her lips and sighed. This time, she focused her gaze on the forest floor.

For near an hour, Summer found nothing. Just dirt, the soft sound of bushes, and the constant brown of her boots were her company. It was not until she heard a rustle in the bush. Perhaps it was the wind or…perhaps not. The half-Zith fell on her arse as brownish rabbit of some sort came careening out of the bushes. Small pebbles cut into her hand and she could feel a rock in a place it should not be.

She rose to her feet with haste. Her gaze flickered back from the direction the rabbit was escaping in to the bush it had burst from. Terror. It was terrified. Almost rolling down the hills in its rush to get away. Summer recognized that, it was the same look a hunted thief had or an unfortunate escapee slave of her fathers. And if it was scared something was making it so. Something had chased it.

The slingshot was in her hands without hesitation. Her hands trembled and her heart ran like the rabbit. Summer reached for her ammo, she struggled to keep her eyes on the bush while opening the sealed belt pouch. Her fingers closed around the small ball. With fumbling practice she squished the ball into the pocket of the sling. A fierce sort of smile parted her lips. Summer used no stance, she didn’t know any and drew the slingshot back like a bow. She held the handle slingshot straight up and down, her thumb tickled her lips then cheek. Summer waited, eyes on the bush. A flash of color peered out of the bush and…

Summer fired her shot.

For such a little ball there was a plume of dirt that rose from the ground, followed by the echo of the crack. It was clear to Summer she had missed. Experience in Sunberth taught her if she couldn’t strike first, she’d better hope she lived long enough to strike last. Her satchel slipped from her shoulders and Summer wasted precious time searching for her dagger. She found it when it cut along the fleshy part of her finger pads.

With a curse Summer withdrew it and waited. By all rights she should be dead but what was it that had come through the bush? The half-Zith cautiously looked behind her then to the bush, scanning the ground for the thing she’d sworn she’d seen.

He was catching up to it! He was catching up he was catch..

Or not. Rey cursed in snake as it charged through a line of bushes. Like hai was it getting away from him. His senses were all focused wholly on his prey as he followed the creature through through the bush.

He heard the crack before anything else registered in his mind, and reeled back instinctively, so fast he flipped sideways. When he righted himself again, he flicked his tongue out, trying to identify his enemy. Behind the scent of nature and the scent of his prey, something... something unusual. His hood flared in alarm. Predator. But he smelled... human smells? Not the smell of a human but the smells that came with the city. A nonhuman from Alvadas, then.

He inhaled deeply, settled his mind, and sensed. There. He focused in on his attacker's aura. They were facing away from him, digging through something. He had a few moments to study them. His tongue flicked out again, tasting her (and he could see it was a her now) scent. A full grown of her kind, a little shorter than he was, with dark hair. And something oddly familiar, that scent of oddness, wrongness. What did it remind him of?

Her. The illusionist, Nise. Well, this one was clearly not her. But that scent was the same. Another of her kind then? Rey grinned. He never had figured out what kind that was. Perhaps this was his chance. And if she didn't want to talk to him, he could always eat her instead.

He began to shift, his upper half morphing into a humanoid shape, while his lower half simply lengthened and grew. As soon as his throat had shifted fully, he called out to her.

"It'ss not polite to sshoot at people trying to eat, you know."
