It had only been days, but to Aladari, it felt like weeks. She had waited (per Petrious' stern directions) at home, watching the days tick by. But, just as he had promised, her arm slowly began to heal.

The first day it started with a burn. The heat from the wound was palpable through the tight wrapping, and she found it only worse under water. On the second day, she removed the wrappings to change them, and nearly dropped her jaw at the hideous sight. Pus oozed from the soft and deathly pale skin, while the faintly covered wound pulsed with a rush of blood. She quickly washed the wrappings and covered it again, already dreading the next cleaning.

She didn't unwrap her arm again until the fifth day. What she saw, however, was miraculous. Despite ugly purple and green bruises beneath and a persistent ooze of clear liquids, the wound looked considerably better. It was scabbed, and appeared smaller to the Vantha's previously panicked eyes. She left the wrapping off that day, allowing it air, and the life returned to her pale skin.

The scabbing, as she came to find, was accompanied by a price. Her arm turned into one massive, intense itch on the sixth day. She tried rubbing all sorts of things on it, including water and a pinch of soft leaves, but found nothing to relieve the itch. Instead, she lay in bed, moaning and pouting while Tar licked at her fingers in empathy.

By the eighth day, she was able to leave the house, albeit tentatively. She walked around the block, taking the "fresh" Sunberthian air deeply in her lungs. It felt good, but there was such chaos outdoors that she quickly returned, in fear of another attack.

Today, the day she came back to Petrious to returb his wrappings, she found that she could flex her arm without causing cracks and bleeding in the scab. She demonstrated for the doctor, but rather than a smile as she might expect, he waved her off.

"Don't get cocky now. Just go on."

Her saddened blue eyes went unnoticed.

"You said you wanted to leave, didn't you?"

He was right. She wanted to leave, but she was afraid. She was just as afraid of traveling home, it felt, as she was of the streets of Sunberth. But what could she do? She couldn't stay for much longer, if she valued her life.

Going home, they would be disappointed that she had done nothing. She had accomplished so little, and they had such faith in her. The gifts, the years of teaching, and their proud smiles as she left- they would all be for nothing. But she would be safe. That's what mattered.

Without a word, she left Petrious behind.

Just as Petrious had told her there would be, there were Wind Eagles down by the bay when she ventured there. Most of the traders were clearly Inarta, with vibrant hair and wide, bold smiles. There were a few others in their mix; there was a boy who could only be mixed blood, and a girl with a terribly Svefran visage. They all seemed friendly enough, speaking loudly and gesturing with open arms, but it was the great beasts that frightened Aladari.

They towered over her, their deep, dark eyes roaming over her. Though Vantha always had a natural ability to read eyes, Aladari felt as though she didn't need it to understand this bird. His face clearly jeered at her, taunting her with a simple gaze as if he knew something (or many things) that she did not. Aladari shivered under his scrutiny, and the bird finally looked away, satisfied.

"Don't mind him." Chirped a voice off to Aladari's left. She turned to look, and found herself face-to-face with a redhead with a sharp, angled face and dark, quiet eyes matching the bird's. When he saw Aladari's shock, he just laughed.

"He's a big ol' softie, really." The Inarta said, patting the bird's side. "Just doesn't like being so far from home." The bird ruffled his own feathers and began to clean them carefully, as if embarrassed by the Inarta's words.

"Name's Nik." He offered, extending two hands to take Aladari's own. "And this crazy petcher here is Hath." He jammed a thumb back at the bird, who tilted his head and narrowed his eyes, causing Nik to laugh loudly. He whispered something in another language, to which the bird bobbed his head.

How strange. Could they be bonded like a Drykas to its horse? Like Kelvic bondmates? Or is it another idea entirely?

Noticing Aladari's continued presence, Nik reached out to her again. "What are you here for, sweetie? Looking for something nice? I got all kinds of pretty glassblown whistles like yours, there." He nodded to the silver whistle still attached to Aladari's belt.

Aladari clutched the whistle instinctively in her hand and shook her head. "A way out a 'ere. 'At's what I need." Aladari answered, and Nik laughed heartily again.

"You've come to the right place then, kid."

After Aladari explained her situation, Nik became even more welcoming. He told her he had a weak heart for the sob stories, but she couldn't help but wonder if it was really weak for women. Nevertheless, he would take her out, and that was all that mattered.

"You'll need to bring all your own food and water and whatnot." Nik explained, guiding Aladari by the shoulder through the mass of redheads. "And, of course, it'll cost you some, for the loss of carrying space."

Aladari nodded understandingly. She hadn't expected any less.

"Unless..." Nik drifted off, then started again. "You said you were a fisher, right?" He burst into a grin and held out a halting palm. "Wait here." It wasn't five ticks before the boy came rushing back, a smile splitting his face. "You could also fish for us. If you can feed some of us, that'll waive your fee. What do you think?"

Waive. Aladari's brow furrowed in thought, and her eyes darkened. Like Laviku's? I can't imagine that's what they mean.

Despite her confusion, Aladari just couldn't shake the boy's bright smile, so she agreed. He laughed and clapped her on the back excitedly. "Sweet! Get all your stuff together fast. We're leaving tonight. And I, uh, I'll see you then."
