The Flooding of Zeltiva

Postby Net on January 7th, 2017, 12:00 am

9th of Winter 516

The rains came suddenly and without warning in the morning. As if the bay was crying for help from the land and from man. The help though would come from the “tears” themselves as the birds that have been gracing the warm airs have found themselves trying to keep warm and dry under trees and eaves of roofs. Unfortunately, the rain was accompanied by the winds from the sea coming into the Bay – normally these would provide for a frozen chill to run through the streets, alleys. Today though they brought up the unwelcome guests known as seagulls and rats into the taverns and inns of the city of Zeltiva. Other locations were also vulnerable and the issue was truly becoming problematic.

Occupants of the Grotto inn were waken by frightened and rather wet gulls that found their way into rooms via opened windows. Rats were found eating the grains of the tavern's pantry – this causing barmaids to come running from their posts screaming.

The silos of the Shipyard that was owned and maintained by the Merchants were found to be ransacked by rodents seeking warmth and food, a dry location.

By seventh bell several of the buildings near the coast and bay were found to be flooded with at least three inches of water. Their contents ruined.

The Flooding of Zeltiva

Fallon has been in the office of the SWI before even the sun had managed to rise. Finding her way through the breaking gloom of day with the swinging lantern light, her tool belt and its adornments hanging from it, the black cloak Zandelia had gifted some time ago masking the clicking gauntlets and the squeaking of leather grieves. All such things hidden neatly, it was not as if she was dressed for war - no instead she was dressed in preparation. Zeltiva was growing volatile and she had no intention on being caught off guard the moment it ignited. She already knew the fall out of such when that happened.

But that was a time ago, and now she was in the safety of the office. Door closed, candles lit to cast the light about the room, the occasional glance down through the large window to the street below. She had contemplated opening it when daylight began to creep its way into existence, but thought better of it when the pattering of rain splattered against the panes. Cloak hung upon the back of the chair, she took a perch upon the sill, watching the overcast sky unload - it held more interest than the notes she had upon her desk. Open letters, scraps of notes, her eyes slid briefly to one of the culprits - squinting angrily at the turquoise ink before looking once more out the window.

"Eyvino," she exhale, the name bitter upon her lips. She watched the rain continue to fall, growing heavier with each passing tick. Below she could see the pools of water begin to gather, forming streamlets as they ran down the street and beyond. The cawing of gulls caught her attention next, the squawking sound erupting as they huddled against the narrow window ledges and eves of buildings.

It is just a heavy squall, she mused to herself, It will pass.

Their desperation to get out of the rain was something, even the firm knocking against the glass did nothing to deter them. Instead she merely received an almost furious squint in return, a small confused bump back upon the other side, before it simply clumped up to the rest of its kin. Exhaling, Fallon returned her focus to the note work. Hands shuffled it together, neatly folding it up for storage.

At least until a scream cut out from one of the downstairs offices.

"RAT! Kill it! Kill it!" she heard the shrill cry of some distressed woman.
"I'm trying! I'm trying!" came the exasperated tone of some male, "Just, hold still you bas-"
"There's another one! And another!"
"Gods above..."
Fallon muttered under her breath. The inspector shook her head, the paper shuffling continuing for a moment. The faint sound of dripping however caused her to pause. Flinching she looked upon the wet mark that had graced the parchment, and then upwards. She did not wait a second time to immediately move the paper. Rushing around to the other side of the desk she located the kettle she previously used for guests. The lid sharply removed, her eyes darting down to the few droplets that had accumulated on the desk. She positioned the kettle on the spot and exhaled a sigh when the faint, echoing drip rung out from within. Taking the rest of her notes she hurried their putting away, firmly putting her own notebook and the offending letter away in the pouch of her tool belt.

oocAlright. I'll bite.

The Flooding of Zeltiva

The droplets pinged heavily into the kettle Fallon sat to catch the watery offenders. At the rate the drops were dripping through the investigator would have enough water to set for some tea it would seem. The screaming from downstairs only worsen though as the call for help came now not just from the wenches, but from cooks and tavern goers a like. There was squawking and cries of the feathered assortment mixed in heavily downstairs.

It wasn't much longer though that Fallon's window was being hammered not by just wind and rain, but by something else... A gull, slamming and cawing at the glass, hitting it with more and more ferocity, trying to gain entry. It was soon joined by another and between the two of them the window's lock was really struggling to remain closed, shuddering and trembling against the elements and bird. If something was not done soon, Fallon would have more to worry about than a drippy ceiling and some water damage on papers... She'd have to plan on two feathered beasts.

The faint sound of dripping was both equally reassuring but somewhat disconcerting. She continued to eyeball the kettle with suspicion, brow furrowed as she continued to contemplate it for a while. No doubt the inspector would have to speak to some authority on repairs, but that could wait for now - at least until the rain gave in. The screaming, of course, continued leaving Fallon to simply perch upon her desk and look outside to the dirge. Grey clouds, turbulent winds and the rattle of the window frame.

It took her a moment longer to realise that the gulls were also partaking in smashing themselves against the panes.

Perplexity took hold next, her jaw growing slightly slack as their aggressive movements continued. Her head gave a small cock to the side, hand reaching forward to give a firm counter knock back. They did not even pause, if anything she noticed they instead grew more energetic in their movements, harder than before with the window rattling louder. She next tried shouting, a distinct, angry "Oi!" rumbling out from her core.

Still nothing - though she suspected the elements outside did little to help the sound travel. The scowl deepened, eyes narrowing to the challenge before her. Opening the window would merely result in letting both bird and element in as would simply leaving them be. Her lips gave a twist in thought, fingers drumming in consideration. Going outside would certainly put her into a similar state to them - and frankly that was an option out of the question. Sound did nothing, shouting definitely did nothing. So, she called upon something else this time.

Left hand resting on her lap she focused. She felt the cool lacing, the weave of the astral tickling against her mind. She felt the djed shift, feeling from the wrist down to the finger tips slowly fading. A small reflexive twitch of her left, the strings that connected astral to flesh slowly stretching, unweaving and shifting under her control. She felt it continue to shift, the physical left hand turning into a dead weight while the astral begun to shift and move. Aware, the fingers moving and wiggling in the air, the restrains of the flesh now behind her.

Her gaze shifted forward then, wicked grin spreading across her lips, the astral snaking its way to the window. Another inhale, her mind flickering in memory to when doing such was much harder, the ethereal trembling as she pressed against the glass. There was a deep inhale this time, her mind picturing and imagining the state of being intangible, the uneasy feeling creeping down her limbs as it passed through the glass and to the outside elements. She held it there for a moment, astral fingers wiggling as she looked upon the birds. A third inhale, she felt the astral split this time, two tendrils forming. The gulls continued, grin becoming wolfish.

"And... Good bye," They lashed forwards, tightly grasping upon the culprit birds. Wrapping a tightening around she gave no second thought as she sharply yanked the pair away from the window sill and back out into the elements.

The Flooding of Zeltiva

The gulls took flight in the wrong direction – back into the elements – against their own wishes. They were soon replaced by another three gulls, these ones more willing to peck at the glass, cracking it almost on impact. Each taking little time between pecks to widen the crack from just a thin line to a small hole that the tip of their beak fit through. A few more well placed hard pecks and the birds were able to fit their head and necks into the holes.

Fallon would need to react far faster now to dispel the birds as they were soon thrusting their faces in and out of the holes, smashing their bodies against the pane and widening the damage to the transparent protection from the elements. Their cries and squawks were a mix of immediate fear, anger, and want of getting out of the rain. Their feathers were ruffled with rain and they smelled heavily of salt and rain.

It took less than three ticks for the first of the trio of gulls to crack its way through the pane enough to get in and start flapping and squawking angrily at the human that attempted to block their way. It was quickly joined by a second, and between the two the investigator's room was becoming quite loud and obnoxious with flapping angry sqawks.

Fallon sighed loudly.

Pinching her brow with her right hand she watched as the aggression of the birds manifested into something more action orientated. The cracking, the shattering of glass, rough and jagged. She wondered how quickly it would take for the birds to begin cutting themselves on the exposed shards, before turning her attention back to the desk. It was there that she began to gather the rest of her materials together, awkwardly shuffling them while the projected hand continued to swat them away, forcibly throwing the sea gulls back along with those that would be replace. Of course, she knew she could only do this temporarily, which was why she moved herself into action.

Going around the room she gathered up what she could; papers, ink, quills, the few delicate tools that would not last to the whims of birds. The iron kettle was left from such arrangement. With that she began the process of stuffing them into her desk draws, storing them out of sight and harm. Next the chairs were pushed to one side, awkwardly shoved against the wall while occasionally she glanced back to the obtrusive birds. No doubt she would have to speak to officials about fixing the damage, but that could be dealt with afterwards. At one point she considered the notion of breaking the neck of one of the gulls, a flare of anger rising up - instead she just continued her shuffling, until content with what had been done was away.

Perching on her personal chair away from the window she looked at the gulls, brow raised in a bemused fashion. With a final fling of the gulls she began the withdrawal of the projected hand, feeling it quiver and tremble as it returned. Snaking its way she focused upon it, the tugging sensation of strings and threads weaving in. It bound its way in, clinging and plucking as it reattached. A flickering, the cold numbness sinking into the limb as it began to physically return to her. She massaged the left with her right, eyes looking to the window with a sigh before simply leaning back and leaving them to it. There was no point in stopping them just yet, and so with an awkward tug she began to pull on her cloak.
