Sh'Ky nodded, turning. Striding forward purposefully, hate in his eyes, he had one thing in his mind. Death.

Babbling and blubbering incoherently, the bald man tried to say something, but Sh'Ky ignored him. Of course he would beg for mercy, say anything to stay alive. Coward.

As 'Ky came near, the man swung at him, a horizontal strike that would've taken off his head at the the shoulders, had Sh'Ky not ducked the sloppy strike. As the man realized that he had missed, his eyes widened, before Sh'Ky thrust forward with his sword, stabbing him through the gut quick and hard.

Coughing up blood, the man tried to bring his club back around to hit Sh'Ky, but 'Ky twisted the shortsword around, making him cry out in pain and drop his club.

Ripping his sword from the man's gut, Sh'Ky let him fall, and once he hit the ground, he kicked the bald man once, in his fresh gut wound, before he leaned over, and turning his sword over, stabbed him in the neck, ripping open the man's throat, and piercing his jugular veins, but he didn't shatter his neck. He wanted the man to feel intense pain before he died.

Reaching into the man's neck wound, he grabbed the section that was above where his adam's apple used to be, and simply pulled. Once the wound was a proper hole, preventing the man from breathing properly, Sh'Ky stood up, and spitting on the man, walked back to Konrad, now showing signs of exhaustion.

Looking from Konrad to his 'friend', Sh'Ky spoke, voice now hoarse, rage spent. "I... suppose that's it, then."

"Bloody Hells. I'm finkin' this'n was pers'nul."

Konrad didn't have the energy or inclination to reply to such an obvious statement. He barely watched Sh'Ky's unfolding vengeance, focused instead on lowering himself gingerly down to one knee and slicing the dead man's shirt nearly off his back. But it was not loot or fine linens he was after; instead the moment the sweaty, dirty rag was off the man, Konrad pressed it to the bloody gash along his stomach.

Rising back up with his teeth grinding and sweat running, he saw the boy stumble towards him, looking dazed and glassy-eyed. Hmm. He recognized that look. First-timer? Maybe, but unlikely. He handled himself too well for that to be true.

"I... suppose that's it, then."

Konrad looked into those eyes and saw a bleakness that mirrored his own... but mayhap did not have the same stamina. He flicked a glance at the ruined corpse behind him, the gaping hope in his throat like a second mouth, hollowed out and with chunks of wet, wriggling flesh next to it all. The story would spread, he'd wager. A great vengeance wreaked.

He was too tired to ask why. Would probably not care much, anyway.

Eyes was probably right: all about some cunny.

"Aye, 'bout... 'bout so." He looked the boy up and down, noticed the blood and the bruises. They still had a ways to go before they hammered down the door of the little shit Konrad knew he was handy with a needle, and some extra muscle along the way might be a good idea. "We're done. Y'wanna get patched up, yuz can follow us. But any coin he charges ya, comes outta yer own fuckin' pocket."

With that, Konrad turned and sheathed his sword. Three Eyes peeked out of the alley and nodded hurriedly. Still some commotion, and approaching, which meant they needed to be gone sharpish. Breath hissing with every footfall, Konrad chomped hard like a shire horse and lurched away, heading due East towards the Sunset Quarter.

"C'mon if yer comin'."

Sh'Ky nodded silently, and walked after the duo, trailing behind them by a few feet. The rain pounded down harder than ever, but 'Ky kept walking, looking down at his feet, as he stomped through puddles, boots now soaking wet.

Through allies, streets, and cracks in between buildings they went, an exhausted procession of injured fighters, not some rambunctious gang of toughs, nor some beaten whelps. They were victorious, and the blood of their enemies covered them, but just as much of the blood was their own. A crowd was following them, staring at the three combatants, but not approaching them, because they knew who Konrad was, what he'd do if they got close.

"Does it ever get any easier?" Sh'Ky took a deep, shaky breath before continuing. "Does it ever stop... burning, in the pit of yer stomach? This feeling of... hate?" These two probably weren't the best choices for introspective conversation, but they were all Sh'Ky had to talk to right now, and they were much more world-wise than him.

Sh'Ky remembered how Rastia's face would light up every time she saw him on the street, back when they were young. How she smiled at him tenderly every time he woke up next to her, when they were older. How she smiled through the tears and the pain at him, while she died, sword in her gut and blood flowing freely.

It was painful to remember how just yesterday, she was alive, breathing, and now she was gone. Sh'Ky didn't deserve to live, while Rastia was dead. He wasn't worth it.

Blind Vengeance (Konrad)

Blood flowed into the rain and then vanished again into the dirt and cobbles. Konrad knew that wasn't the only trail they were leaving. It was just the one hardest to follow.

The easier one was the crowd of Sunberth dwellers who, staying true to the principle, were lazily following the battered little trio. Just to see what happened next. But as he cast the odd look back over his shoulder, bleeding stomach growling and stabbing his nerves with every step, Konrad noted that no furious, running figures with weapons drawn were joining the procession.

Benefits of being a face, he though wryly, face pinched and pale. They know what you can do. What you've just done. And they don't want none of it.

Which was a plus, but Konrad knew that unless they got to a man with some healing knowledge in his hands, it wouldn't matter much. He's suffered and survived worse, but the longer they left it...

Fuck it. Keep walking. Not far to go.

The boy said something. Blurry. Made fuzzy by the rain and the blood pounding in his skull. Konrad just grunted and ignored him, hand pressed to his stomach. Three Eyes did much the same, head on a swivel for the best time to do the smart thing: leave these two bastards and made a proper run for it.

Turned out, that wasn't necessary. They made the next district and the fetid, claustrophobic glory of the Slums at the edge of Sunset Quarter was revealed to them. Konrad upped his pace as best he could, swinging legs that were fast losing their feeling, eating up the cobbles until he found the door he wanted-

BANG BANG BANG

"Snouty?! Open the fuck up, I got business for ya!"
Something slid and shuffled and kicked over a bottle behind the door. Konrad looked around and saw the crowd watching, cow-like and half-interested. He delved into his pocket and into that bag the boy had given him, filling it with mizas. "Snouty, ya cunt?! Got a handful a' gold fer yer skill wit' a needle! Youse gonna let that just slip away?"

That got the unseen occupant's attention. Sluggish footsteps approached the door. A half-dozen bolts and locks were freed and the door opened just enough for a pale and near-hairless face to be seen-

"Don' be fuckin' me around today, Snout."

-and for Konrad to slam his shoulder into it and barge his way in, gritting his teeth as fresh, blooming bruises sent lightning racing up and down his side. The meek man behind the door jumped back with a yelp, smoothing over the bare straggles of hair he still had over his sweaty dome. It calmed him. Today, he'd need a lot more than a nervous tic.

"Fuck me, Venger, what-"

"Don' be askin' stupid questions, neither,"
Konrad snarled, dragging his arse into the bottle- and trash-strewn hovel. He made a beeline for the bed and sat onto the edge as easily as he was able, giving Snouty a good view of his blood-soaked shirt. "Some fucker tried to cut me open, s'all y'need to know."

He slammed his hand onto the table but it was more than flesh and bone hitting wood; there was the heavy, muffled clink of coins, too. Snouty's gaze snapped to it like a hawk to a plump pigeon. He all but licked his lips and Konrad's fevered gaze searched around for-

They were filthy and scattered across his rotted bureau, but there they were. Needles. Scalpels. Tweezers. Spools of thin thread and bottles of foul-smelling yet medically-divine potions and poultices. A pile of dirty bandages was behind the lot and Konrad pointed a shaky hand at them.

"Get t'work," he said as he got as comfortable as possible, ripping open his shirt and damn the buttons popping all over the room. "An' gimme somethin' fer the pain. Eyes? Watch the door."

Neither man needed to be told twice, and Snouty knew well enough what "something for the pain" entailed. He gathered some of his trade tools and snagged a half-full bottle of 'shine as he went, shoving it into Konrad's hand. The sellsword chugged down most of it in one parched, desperate guzzle, feeling it burn and rend his insides... but leave him a number man at the end of it.

"Fuck... bastard tried t'pull yer guts out, by the looks of it."

"Aye. Tried. Cunt won't be doin' it again."

"Of that, Venger, I have no doubt."

Konrad rolled his eyes and rested his head. Snouty still talked like that sometimes, like he was still beavering away at his studies in Zeltiva, instead of working as a bargain-basement bone-setter for any street daemon with coin. Konrad had heard the stories. He'd had such high hopes, and proud ways. Then he discovered he liked his booze and floozies a little too much, and even Zeltiva had chased him out. Word was, there were still powerful people back there who wanted a word with him about the murky circumstances of his flight back to Sunberth.

Konrad though he'd chase that up, one day. But he'd found Snouty far more useful here, and working, than dragged to Zeltiva and facing his music.

"Does it ever get any easier?"

The words fluttered back into his mind as he lay there. Metal was laid out and sterilized in liquid that could kill infection with a quick soaking. A little steel chorus that brought Konrad's mind back to the boy. The one standing in the room with his chest heaving and his face hollow, eyes blinking mechanically.

Konrad took another slug of the 'shine, gaze not leaving Sh'Ky.

"Aye," he said, with the brutal honesty of a man who killed for pay. "It does. After a while... y'don't even 'member their faces..." His gaze fogged. Memory took its place. Laying there on that filthy bed with a barely-trained healer about to stick things into him, Konrad sighed. More out of exhaustion that regret. That feeling... he'd lost it long. "They all jus'... run together..."

"Does it ever stop... burning, in the pit of yer stomach? This feeling of... hate?"

He remembered the rest as Snouty poured a dram of something burning and vicious over his stomach. Blood washed away and a thousand angry teeth clamped themselves into his flesh. Konrad jammed his knuckles into his mouth and bit down hard, roar of pain muffled.

Does it go away? Or do you not even notice it anymore?

"Askin' the wrong man, boy," he said through gritted teeth. He looked back at Sh'Ky and the boy could see a man living as he would die. A breath away from Dira and set to greet her with a bottle in one hand and the other hovering near his dagger. Laying in filth and unmourned, cared for by none whose attentions he had not purchased beforehand. "M'jus'... jus' here fer... fer coin..."

The fog was upon him. The pain. The booze. The adrenaline seeping back out of his body and leaving him to the mercy of his wounds. But even sleep would be denied him as Snouty dug the first thread-tied needle into his flesh and bit back his roar like a bull set to bellow.

Fuck... just get it over with, already.

Sh'Ky nodded, taking the man's words as they were. Staring past Konrad as the doctor worked on his wounds, he became lost in thought. So they all ran together, huh. Sh'Ky... didn't know what to think about that. He didn't normally want to kill people, even if they had crossed him, but... The anger that he had felt when Rastia died, when he ripped that man's throat open.... it was all spent. Was it worth it? Was Sh'Ky a bad person now, because he had wreaked vengeance on someone else, even though they were 'worse' than he was?

Sh'Ky didn't think he was. Killing neither good nor bad, just nor unjust. There were just the dead, and the living. And, staring at a man get his guts stuffed back into him, Sh'Ky made an oath to himself. He would survive, no matter what. No matter who he had to steal from, no matter what he had to do, he would live on, for Rastia.

After all, if he died, who would remember her?

Yes, he would stop the idealistic foolishness. Yet... it left him with a bad taste in his mouth, imagining himself acting as the slavers did, hell, even acting like Konrad did. Maybe... even though he would do whatever he had to survive, he would try to... avoid causing unnecessary misery? Yes, that would be best. He would survive, but without causing undue suffering.

When Konrad and Three Eyes were all patched up, 'Ky threw a bag of money down on the table in front of the 'doctor'. "Hey. Fix up my face. Make sure my head doesn't fall off or anything." The street doctor, uncertain at the new face, looked back at Konrad and Three Eyes questioningly, and finding no disagreement there, sighed, and went to work on Sh'Ky's face, cleaning out the wounds, and sewing them up so there would be no infection or complications.

Looking over at the mercenaries dispassionately, Sh'Ky didn't wince as the doctor put stitches in his face, saying, "Thank you for your help. I hope I don't see you two ever again. It's nothing personal, mind you."

Once the doctor finished stitching, Sh'Ky ran his finger over the stitches, feeling them out. Glancing at them, one last time, Sh'Ky didn't even look back as he left the house. "Ta."
