Turrin meets another hunter on the Sea of Grass

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

Time-stamp: 41st of Spring, 517AV
Location: Sea of Grass (Bluevein River)
Who: Romona Silvertongue

Sitting on the sandy shores just north of the Bluevein River, Turrin couldn't believe how warm it was in mid spring down on the Sea of Grass. The shirtless man wasn't complaining because the winters up in northern Kalea were particularly brutal specially near the city of Wind Reach. This temperature was perfect for the hearty Inartan mutt, and he wasn't going to waste the day sitting on the shoreline of the river thinking about the past. Especially when those thoughts were often plagued with sad memories of the past. He was in Endrykas now. It was a new beginning. He hoped. Standing up, Turrin walked to his horse. The horse that he bought in Riverfall was surprising well mannered horse, named Muncher. He named Muncher because the horse was constantly eating, and like clockwork, he was once again gorging himself on scruffy grass on the edge of the beach. When Turrin bought him, he needed a horse with calm demeanor because he was still learning learning how to ride, and Muncher seemed patient enough to deal with a novice rider like himself. The former endal made sure to approach him, so he can seem him and said in common, “You must have a hollow leg boy because you are always eating. Do I need to stage a intervention?”

Muncher looked up at him, twitched his ears from side to side, and went back to eating. A part of him hoped for witty retort because if he said that to Aponivi. The gruff wind eagle would have shot telepathically back with a snarky comment when he was alive. All he got out of Muncher was silence, and the silence and lack of telepathic connection to his mount pained the former endal the most. It was a cruel reminder of the loss of the wind eagle a year and half ago. Even if he didn't share a telepathic link with his horse, the wanderer still wasn't a cruel or neglectful rider. Walking to his side, Turrin stroked the side of mane and said with a smile, “Even if I bought you a a couple months ago, Muncher, I still consider you a friend. We are a hunting duo, and we both need to watch our backs out here. OK?” No response from Muncher because he was pulling some grass from the sandy dirt. As he was stroking his mane, Turrin notices some tangles in the coarse hair, and he frowned to himself that he forgot to buy a horse comb, so he started to try to untangle it by hand as the seagulls started to squawk in the distance. The horse didn't pay him any mind as he struggled to untangle the mane with his fingers. As he worked the knot was two tight for his big fingers to loosen, so he did his best and continued, but he wasn't able to get the knot undone.

Giving up for now, Turrin opened his saddle bags and retrieved his short bow and quiver. Replacing the broad tipped arrows with fishing arrows, he slung the quiver onto his back. Grabbing the myrian made short bow, in his left hand, he took Muncher's reins and gave them a slight tug for him to move. They started walking up the beach looking for a decent water to start fishing. The hunter knew that he needed slightly calm water to shoot into. If he was just throwing a line or net into the water, he could fish anywhere, but he needed the water to be calm to either see a ripple of a fish breaking the surface or see the fish under the water to get a clear shot. Bow-fishing is harder than it looks, and he normally goes home with nothing. For about half a bell, the hunter walked up the beach, and he didn't encounter spots suitable for fishing since the either the current was to strong or the banks of the river was to high. He wasn't going to risk falling into the river.

Eventually, he noticed a small island or sand bar jutting out of the water about ten feet from shore. Turrin stopped for a moment and noticed the sand bar made a natural barrier from the shore to the small island. The current wasn't as strong on the outside of the sand bar, and water on the other side of barrier seemed calm and shallow enough to shoot a arrow into if he saw a fish. When he got to the shoreline, he noticed that he could see the water wasn't to deep maybe a foot at most at the most. Deep enough for him to walk to the island without having to swim. Turrin looked at Muncher who was slightly backing away from the salty water in from of him and said with a smile, “Alright, I am going to walk out to that island, but first lets find you a comfortable to place out of the sun to rest while I fish.” Turrin notice a grove of palm trees on the edge of the beach. The hunter knew it had enough shade to keep the horse cool, so he tied the reins to trunk of the smallest palm tree.

When the horse was secure, he walked back to the shoreline and started taking of his socks and boots. After his boots and boots were off, he took off his bryda until he was just in his small clothes. Picking up his boots and bryda, Turrin walked into the water, he immediately dropped about a foot into the water. Turrin clenched his teeth at the cool temperature of the water, but it wasn't cool enough for him to worried, so he continued into the clear water. The Inarta kept scanning the direction of the island and under the surface of the water. He got excited when he saw a decent size colorful fish swim ahead of him. It seemed to swimming near the darker colored area under the water. There was a big contrast of colors from the yellowish sand and the darker color rocks. He decided to walk in the sandy part because he didn't want to cut himself on some sharp under water rock.

When he was about five feet from shore of the island, the water came up to knee, so he lifted the bow, boots, and bryda over his head to keep the dry. Luckily as he got closer to the island, the water got slightly shallower with every step. When he got about got to the shore of the island, he noticed the water was almost completely calm since the island shielded the small channel from the rest of the river. Looking at the surface under the water, he noticed the discoloring under the water and noticed small fish swimming over the rocks. Pulling a fishing arrow from the quiver, he stood by the shore of the water, watched, and waited for a large fish to swim into his slight line.

Ramona was close, she had spotted the rabbit, and tried shooting at it just a few ticks ago. It scurried off, and Ramona was a couple of miles outside of Endrykas already, she didn't want to stray too far away from Endrykas. She recalled from her father saying how dangerous it was, and other Drykas stating how really dangerous it was to just adventure farther than a few miles even. Ramona could feel the bumps on her skin start to tingle as she rode upon Anthem.

A Strider that is more capable and trusting than Ramona could have ever imagine. A gift, from her father. Ramona was pleased to still have some sort of connection with him, even though he and her mother had both been deceased for a couple of years. The pain... she could still feel it, etched deep within her schema of memories. She knew very well, the details of their deaths came to be, and even Bhug still has nightmares after a couple of years. She was sure that he was struggling as much as she was, but she had a feeling that Bhug was hurting more than she for some significant reason. He was only five years of age, and already he had lost his parents. It must've come hard for the other pavillion members with parents as well. Ramona didn't blame them, or judged them if they had ever thought about missing them.

For some reason, it just felt difficult to for her to cope with the current state of mind. She knew that she must keep a good state of mind, and always be on her best behavior. She would almost agree to do anything, she would still be happy, and if someone needed her help, she would always be there.

Ramona's short bow tugged lightly against her shoulders, the string tightened as she moved, so instead she attempted to stay stiff, but Anthem didn't truly appreciate her body being stiff and he snorted.

"Sorry, the bow- It's quite uncomfortable."Ramona responded genuinely. She leaned over slowly, and carefully to stroke Anthem's mane. There was something that had caught Ramona's eyes. She had just barely even noticed them, and Anthem's hoof prints were very similar to the other set of prints that dotted the ground. Ramona didn't really know what kind of prints they were, they did look almost like hoof prints, but they had a claw-like shape engraved at the top of the print. The mud was thick, but it certainly displayed the prints of this other animal quite nicely. So what did Ramona decide to do?

She decided to follow them, and Ramona pursed her lips and whistled slightly, signaling Anthem to step over a little more on the right. His hooves clapped against the grass, but it didn't bother Ramona too much. She was almost way too focused on the tracks beneath the two and Ramona had almost forgotten what rushing water sounded like. She didn't realize how close she was to the river until she stopped Anthem.

She leaned as she sat on the Yvas, and squinted her eyes, she noticed a couple of other sets of prints. One being a boot print, like an actual set of boots. She turned her head to the left, and she noticed a young looking man, with ravishing hair, and another strider? He could be another Drykas. Though, Ramona had actually wondered how many non Drykas there were in Endrykas. She wouldn't mind meeting a non Drykas, she was hoping to meet at least one of every race- except Zith. She had a great fear of Ziths, especially since her parents death.

"You must be thirsty Anthem, let us go get ourselves a drink."Anthem snorted an neighed, his neigh was loud enough to be heard from about a mile away. Ramona was kind of hoping that he'd be loud, he wanted to get the man's attention. Anthem started to trot closer to the river.

DAY, SEASON, 517AV

Ramona heard noises behind her. She turned her head and glanced around to make sure they nothing was coming. She then turned her head back to focus her attention on the man, but he was gone. Perhaps it was just Ramona's imagination. She could be tired after all it had been awhile since she had been outside of her tent. It was only recently that she had decided to come out of hiding and work to support her brother. They weren't able to live off of her money that she got from her parents for too long. Her father had trained her to work as a hunter, though there was many things that Ramona needed to know. Not so much time to learn it either.

Ramona took this time to rest for a few chimes. She thought that she wasn't too far from her Pavillion. She decided that she could work with her Webbing a bit, just in case if there was someone who walked into her tent or something. Plus, she needed to look after Bhug. If he was close to their tent, Ramona would know. She dismounted Anthem and he grazed over by the grass Ramona retrieved her shortbow from the Yvas which was strapped to it. She didn't want to lose her guard, but she could be over reacting. She was a little protective when it came to Bhug.

She needed to keep him safe and secure as possible as she could.

The Djed was calling to her, she answered the call and the surge was intense. Though, she could 'feel' nothing within her tents perimeter. She didn't really want to play with the Web too much. Didn't want to give the other Drykas who knew Webbing mixed signals. So she knew that Bhug was fine. Though, it took more than a few times for the Djed to release it's grasp on Ramona's system. She felt a very small wave of energy leave her system. Though, she was still awake of course, but she stumbled a bit. She needed someone to help teach her more about Webbing. She hoped that she could find someone to teach her.

Though, what she needed to do right now was focus on her hunting. She needed to support her brother and herself as long as they can. Once Ramona develops her skills, she'll be able to join the Watch. That's what her father had always wanted from her. Ramona hoped to become a member of the Watch soon. The sooner the better, and the more she didn't have to kill weak prey to support her and her brother. She wouldn't wouldn't mind the extra money either. Since she would be able to buy her own herd, and learn how to raise her own cattle. Maybe even get some companions to help her work on her tent farm like the other Pavillions have. It would be a fun idea, and perhaps Bhug would have a reason to stay by the tent then? So that Ramona didn't have to worry about him so much. It was just a thought. Though, she thought too much, and she shouldn't strain herself when she had just used Webbing.

"I must focus on hunting though..." Ramona told herself. She looked around, and perhaps she might have just seen the younger man, or he just simply ran off with his Strider. It could be possible that it was an illusion. Though, Ionu wouldn't stray too far from her Domain, would she? Hopefully not, her Domain needed her, and Ramona was sure that it was just the trick of the sun playing on her. She could probably fish with her shortbow, though she doesn't have fishing arrows. It would be harder to retrieve the fish when she didn't even have a net either. Anthem snorted and cantered his way over to the river. Ramona followed and she filled up her waterskin.

Ramona had hoped that she would find some game here along the river. Where there's water, there must be pretty, right? Though, the Drykas was very unsure and she didn't really know what to do if she couldn't find any game. Though, as Ramona filled up her waterskin, she leaned over, and peered around Anthem. She thought she noticed tracks, but she was unsure, again, it could be the trick of the light. Though, they wouldn't play tricks on her if there were tracks that Ramona could possibly follow. After they are a lead and Ramona could soon find prey. She hoped that it was smaller prey, she didn't like killing the larger game. One reason being, she didn't have a way to transport it back to Endrykas, and she didn't know how to preserve the meat. She should probably learn how to do that to. Maybe learn how to become a natural survivalist. "I think I found some tracks Anthem." Ramona said, and stood up patting the Strider on the back. He snorted and turned his body and sniffed the tracks. Ramona steadily followed beside the Strider and stayed close. She felt better when she was by his side.

DAY, SEASON, 517AV

The huntress looked around, and observed the area around her. She took in the setting that was set before her, it didn't include much, a river few shrubberies here and there, and multiple layers of tracks to follow. Ramona rested her right hand on her right hip, just below the ribcage and sighed uncomfortably. Her father had taught her just enough to understand the basics of hunting, and using a shortbow, but he didn't teach her much about tracking; and like always she had wished so many times that she was taught how to track and hunt properly before they...

It was still too difficult for her to think of her parents that way. Their deaths were more than heartbreaking; Ramona spent nearly a year in solitude and despair while living on the money that her parents had left before Ramona needed to get herself out and work her way back up again.
To move her life forward at one step at a time, it challenged her from the start. She was a novice working alone, always worked alone. She didn't have many others to go to, aside from the other tents that lived close by hers. All she really had was Bhug, and she would do whatever it took to keep him protected and comfortable. Even if it meant giving up her own life for his. Bhug is her everything, and Ramona will keep it that way and won't let anything get in her way. She'll do whatever it took to keep him safe and it was worth repeating.

Anthem snorted and shook his head, he trotted towards the huntress and sniffed the tracks carefully, he sneezed as his nose rubbed against the grass beside the dirt. "Bless you," Ramona offered and stroked the Striders neck all the way down to his back a few times. "Did you pick up a scent,
boy?!" Ramona asked and bent down to inspect the shape. She hoped to investigate it thoroughly,
but she doesn't have all day, it was a hood print, but it wasn't Anthem's of course. When Anthem reversed his position, Ramona compared his hoofprint with the other one. Anthem's was smaller than the older hoofprint. Some hoofprints can be small of course, that would mean it could be a doe, or a calf. Unless, there was smaller deer around here, and Ramona remembered that the Spitfire would pay extra for the amount of antlers. She concluded that it wasn't any predators. Though, Ramona would have to look around more, to find more evidence to see if it wasn't a predator. Ramona doesn't know too much about predators with hooves, the only one that could seem dangerous (but would rather be in a pack) would be buffalos. At least; that's what Ramona thinks, though there are rhinos. "How about we follow them anyways and see what they are?"

The young dark haired huntress gritted her teeth before remounting Anthem, her bond. She stopped as she realised that a few times was few too many, and she didn't want to chip her teeth or anything like that. She figured that she could take inventory before inspecting the prints any further. "I have rope, which is a good thing..." Ramona stated as she pulled out a balled up piece of rope that was her fathers when he went out hunting. Ramona placed it back ibside one of the pockets of the Yvas before resuming her inventory checks. "Shortbow, arrows, and water. Check. " She brushed her hands together to wipe away any nervousness she might have had while out hunting. Anthem snorted in response and began to slowly follow the hoofprints.

Ramona balanced herself to keep steady as she sat perched awkwardly on the Yvas, as she tried to look around the plains in search of any signs of wildlife. Aside from these tracks, there wasn't much anything after the bushes. These tracks stretched pretty far down the plain lands and the animal could have gone very far from the river behind her. Though, if it ever needed water again; it would need to return to one of the few water sources around Endrykas during this time of year.

"Hmm, I wonder what kind of creature made these prints Anthem. It could definitely be a deer, but there are also other animals that have hooves too." She stated blubtly, and she observed the grass around her. Looking out to make sure that there weren't any dangers awaiting her travels. Anthem bent his head down and sniffed the grass where the tracks are hidden by Ramonas vision.

"Blasted, your searching right Anthem?" He neighed in response, Ramona stroked her hand across the back of his neck and he picjed up a scent and snorted. He quickened his pace, and Ramona had to hold on carefully, because it was a sudden movement that made her jump.

Eventually, Anthem had managed to track down the animal into a hillside. Massive hills and plain fields overlooked the grasslands. Ramona felt tiny as she looked ahead of her. Though, as she peered through the valley, she noticed a small brown furred animal (it only looked small to her because of the distance) and it reminded her of a deer. Ramona smiled, but she also did notice a couple more things aloft. There was a pack of coyotes that were divides into two, and were on opposite sides of the deer. Ramona heard howling and noticed one of the coyotes raise its head up, and it seemed to have been commanding the other coyotes. "Go the other way Anthem, hurry. We must find another." He coyotes charged down the animal, Anthem turned before Ramona could say any more and sent her prayers to Dira and the other Gods.

DAY, SEASON, 517AV

Time had passed quicker than Ramona had thought it would. She and Anthem had followed the hoof prints of the deer into a pack of coyotes that mauled it to pieces. Ramona, on the other hand hadn't taken the chances of the wilderness, and stayed closer to the clearings as much as she could. Well... as much as Anthem could. Ramona was pleased to still be alive and that the furry beasts were busy with their own kill and didn't bother coming after Ramona. It was only a matter of time before Ramona could spot another deer. She hoped she would find one soon. Though, as she thought about deer, a skein of geese flew overhead gawking at each other as Ramona watched. Blueish-grey clouds started to cover the horizon above, which Ramona thought wad unsettling. She didn't really understand why, but it seemed like it could rain soon.

Surprisingly, Anthem stoped in his tracks, and had almost caught Ramona off guard, she winced a bit as she felt pressure beneath her bottom, and frowned. "Anthem, what was that for?" She complained, rubbing her lower back, she observed Anthem and watched as he sniffed the ground some more. Ramona didn't see any other sets of tracks around here. So it seemed unlikely to sniff for something that wasn't there, but then again; horses and other animals had better sniffers than human and humanoid creatures, unless if you were one of those Kelvics. Ramona sighed and leaned back on the Yvas, as she regained her composure she wondered where to go for her next location to hunt. She could always go back to the river, perhaps she could be lucky? Maybe not, she's usually not that lucky; and tracking animals appeared to be easier said than done. It took time to hunt down animals, and Ramona wasn't very talented at it. Though, she wouldn't give up, Ramona needed to find a deer or some sort of animal that she could take home and trade for some meat. "let's go back to the river then, shall we?" Ramona suggested, Anthem pointed his head towards the direction of where they came from; which was the river. She was confused, and surprised at the same time, but wondered if Anthem had picked up a trail of another animal. Hopefully, he had, or they could be out here all day hunting.

Anthem turned towards the river and Ramona had to steady herself once more before he started again. Ramona told him to stay away from the coyotes so that they couldn't pick up their scents easily. She really hoped that Anthem had found something, and she would buy him a treat, maybe an apple for his good work for today.

Eventually, they had made it to the river where they were before, and soon enough; Ramona had found a set of tracks, and tracks meant animals. It was a different set, but further down the river than what Ramona had hoped for. It didn't matter much, Ramona could still find her way back to Endrykas, and she would soon be home before before dinner so that she could feed Bhug.

She spotted a brownish furry animal drinking from the river. Anthem started to slowly creep towards it and Ramona struggled to retrieve an arrow. Once she had found one, she grabbed it, and nocked the arrow in the shortbow after she grabbed the bow as well. Ramona aimed carefully and told Anthem to stop moving, they were pretty far away from the small deer. Since that's what it had looked like to Ramona. She didn't know what younger deer were ever called. She took a deep breath and exhaled to calm herself. The string of the bow felt tighter, and she released the arrow. It zoomed alongside the river and picked up speed gradually. It struck the young deer in the thigh and slumped downwards almost stumbling into the river. Ramona smiled, and thanked the Gods for her luck, but the deer regained it's balance and started to limp away. Ramona frowned, and Anthem quickened his pace. Ramona retrieved another arrow, and fired, she had hit it the second time, and the arrow struck the top of its back. It stumbled again, but still kept going Ramona retrieved another arrow, but she struggled to pull one out. As she had pulled it out of the quiver, Anthem had ran over a bump and she fell over and landed on the ground with a loud thump. Though, she cursed under her breath and with the adrenaline flowing through her system; Ramona had nocked a bow in and hurried after the deer that was running away, leaving a small trail of blood on the grass as it did so. She aimed again, and this time, Ramona was closer so it wouldn't be so hard to fire this next arrow. She stopped and caught her breath, and quickly aimed at her target. She fired just a few ticks later and it had hit the neck of the deer.
Instead of stumbling the deer whined and rolled over to its side. Anthem stopped running and Ramona had to run abit more to keep up.

The Drykas prayed to Dira for the catch of the day and tied it to the back of the Yvas and she made sure that her knots were pretty tight before mounting. She did pull out her arrows, and placed them back in the quiver. "Let's go back to Endrykas now, the Spitfire. See what they could offer us." Ramona stated.

At the Spitfire.

The tent's support beams and canvas walls of The Spit Fire are littered with dried, stretched hides, skeletons, jars of organs, and tools of the butchery trade. The best of the best Drykas tanners and butchers are housed here, masters of the fine art of preserving hides and meats. Everything is scavenged from a beast's corpse and used to benefit the Drykas quality of life; leather for the leatherworkers, meat for markets, pride and honor for the hunters and tanners, organs and glands for healers and philterers, and the leftover bones for carving into jewelry, weapons, or glyphs.

There was an older man who was already skinning a deer. From the looks of it, he seemed quite talented. Ramona was pleased to see someone out here working. Perhaps, she could learn a few things from him or something, but she was hoping to turn this deer in for fresh and preserved meat. "Hello?" Ramona called out to the man, and the weight of the deer behind her seemed heavier, Anthem stopped where he was and looked around,
and grazed on the grass.

"Yes, how can I help you?" The man asked and stopped what he was doing, and washed his hands from the water bucket he had.

"I was hoping to trade in this deer, I caught it less than a half bell ago." Hunting, all day, she signed. "It was quite tiring." She admitted.

"Hmm, I see, and you are?" The man asked patiently as he inspected Ramona.

"Ramona Silvertongue, of the Diamond Clan?" Ramona answered. "I can show you the deer."

"Okay then, the names Brodann, I'd love to see the deer that you've caught for me." He said, and followed Ramona and smiled. "That's a doe, love, and by the looks of it, it looks to be a few years old. I can give you two pounds of meat for this deer. This and the other one I was butchering would serve me plenty." He complimented. "Untie the doe, and put it over there, and I'll go get the preserved meat." The man said, and the huntress smiled and nodded. She did what the man told her to do, and placed the doe over to where he was cutting up the other one, and Brodann, had came back from his tent with two pounds of meat.

"Thank you," Ramona said happily. "Have a good one." Ramona commented. "You too," the man replied and went back to work. Ramona stuffed the preserved meat into one of the pockets of the Yvas and headed back home, after moubting Abthem once more.

Excellent training thread! I'm glad you decided to continue after Turrins absence. The only constructive critisism's I can give is to make sure you watch your tenses; you've got a bad habit of switching in the middle of your sentences. If you have any comments or concerns drop me a PM. :)
