Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

70th of Spring, 517AV

An unenthusiastic groan filled one of the small rooms at The Kulkukan Tavern and Inn or 'The Kulk' as it was often referred to by the locals, it was not the first proof of frustration to make itself known for the day and it was unlikely to be the last. It was spring, a whole new year in a whole new place in a whole new life and yet the unwanted familiarity of the past still seemed to loom in the air. Up until now she had been semi-aware of this unsatisfying feeling but she had yet to place it, but now finally it was clear.

"That's it!"

The sorceress used her hands to push herself up into a sitting position on the single bed, long waves of dark brown hair falling to her bare chest and back as Kamilla examined her surroundings. The unwelcome feeling of nostalgia she'd felt at night, the slightly suffocating yet familiar atmosphere she'd been trying to pin point, finally she understood. It was the room. It had been several seasons since she'd left Sahova behind, unsuccessful in her hopes of becoming a wizard or even creating anything of worth to the mages of The Undead Isle or herself for that matter, but the lingering feeling that seemed to have followed her all the way across a sea and two regions had finally become apparent.

With disdain, Kamilla recalled the storage closet that had been her 'living' area back on Sahova, a cold bare space with no natural lighting and hardly any furniture. While her room small room at The Kulk was far more comfortable than her closet back in The Quarters, it still carried with it that stifling aura of oppression. She couldn't think in the small space and her current room, though quaint, felt a little too similar to the closet for her to distance it from the association.

It was early morning in Riverfall, light and the sounds of life poured into the quaint room, completely unlike Sahova, and Kamilla who had been laying naked across the bed flipping through the pages of her grimoire with little interest had finally mustered up the resolve to do something. It took about twenty chimes for the sorceress to get dressed and ready for her day, pulling on her short black skirt with long lace trail, followed by her black knee high boots which she never went without and finally her long red scarf, Scarlet, which she'd animated to wrap itself up and over each of her breasts before crossing and tying its ends behind her neck, so long as she spoke the command 'Scarlet, wrap' in an embarrassingly low man voice, the result of an oversight during its animation process.

Once dressed, the dark haired sorceress made quick work of packing the few possessions she still owned, books, clothes and her few other assorted belongings into her single large chest while her coin purse and a few smaller items were placed into her pack. With everything in its place, she made her way out of the tiny room and down the stairs toward the busier tavern part of the establishment and towards its tall blue owner Nystir.

Their transaction was short and pleasant, with Kamilla requesting to be moved to a larger room and the ever friendly Nystir offering to help move her chest himself, which she gladly accepted. If there was one upside to life in Riverfall it was that the locals always seemed more than willing to help a woman in need, though she'd heard from several sources that the akalak race relied on women of other races in order to keep from dying out, which explained both their pleasantness as well as the uncomfortable amount of attention she usually got while strolling through the city, yet another large difference between Riverfall and Sahova.

With her things moved and and the door to her new room securely locked, Kamilla made her way out of The Kulkukan and into the bustling streets of Riverfall, as always the third tier was ripe with activity, an assortment of people doing an assortment of jobs everywhere she looked, the ever present roar of the waterfall filling any absence of sound left by the city's inhabitants. Although she did have to go to work for the day, she knew which places of interest she planned on visiting afterwards, since arriving in the beautiful city of the akalaks Kamilla had done little more than explore but even so there were still plenty of new things to see.

Her first stop for the day was her place of work, Red Diamond Fashion, its interior was cozy but nice, not unlike her old place of employment back in Zeltiva, Yvette's. Kamilla was initially surprised to see the men's section was as big as the women's but had then remembered the lopsided gender ratio of Riverfall, regardless of its contents, it was nice to be surrounded by clothing, something that always felt familiar to her since both she and her mother were seamstresses, though over the years she'd grown to like the physical act of sewing less and less.

As expected the store's wares included a lot of leathers, the material seemed to be very popular as a clothing choice throughout the city and although it was slowly beginning to grow on her, she didn't feel comfortable enough with donning an entirely leather ensemble just yet, perhaps she would in a season or two. Despite her hesitance toward the majority of the clothing on display, a few items did catch her eye, most notably an off the shoulder white blouse and a deep brown leather corset which she made a mental note to purchase towards the end of the work day, having long since decided that there was nothing else she was interested in, besides the many different types of interesting shoes, but Kamilla would never be able to feel comfortable in anything that didn't cover the unsightly knee high burn scar on her leg.

Offering the desk clerk Hudon a polite nod as a greeting, Kamilla made her way to the work room located at the back of the store, entering and taking a seat at her work station where several garments were piled and waiting for her to attend to them. Being fairly new and since Riverfall assigned people jobs rather than allowing employers to interview potential employees themselves, Rosela had assigned Kamilla the lackluster job of sewing the Red Diamond Fashion tag onto the inside of the store’s newly made garments, until she was able to gauge Kamilla’s skill as a seamstress.

Taking only a few moments to thread the eye of the needle Kamilla got to work carefully pulling the needle back and forth through the material as she sewed the inner label into place, paying extra attention to the spacing of the pattern to ensure a professional looking result. Sewing labels onto clothing was hardly an enjoyable task, let alone rewarding, and it certainly couldn’t compare to the admittedly odd and exciting tasks she’d been given during her seasons as an apprentice on The Undead Isle, but work was work and her gold wouldn’t last forever without it. A final pull of the thread before tying it neatly off left her with a single completed label and over a dozen left to go... Kamilla could do nothing but sigh as the impending work day finally began to hit her.

Flicking some of her dark brown wavy locks over her shoulder as she moved on to her second label for the day, Kamilla began the mind numbingly boring process yet again. In, out, in out, over and over again until yet another label was down and she moved onto the third for the day. With not much to focus on in her immediate vicinity other than the mundane task at hand, naturally, her thoughts began to wander, first to the origins of her sewing skills, being her mother and then to why she ever thought it would be something she’d enjoy. The truth of the matter was, as a young girl she’d idolized we beautiful seamstress mother and wanted nothing more than to be an exact copy but, fortunately, with age came the wisdom and realization that her idol wasn’t nearly as perfect as her childhood mind had thought.

It took Kamilla a few bells to finish sewing all the labels onto their respective garments, a task made even more frustrating by several accidentally imperfect stitches that required her to pull the thread out and start anew. Her first job flowed seamlessly into the second for the day, that being hanging and storing the newly labeled garments in their appropriate sections so that they were ready for customers to see and hopefully buy.

By the time late afternoon had arrived and the end of the workday neared, Kamilla had lost the spark of inspiration she’d awoken with that morning, having slowly deflated over the course of the day. It was until Hudon called on her with a delivery request to end off her day that she even displayed an expression that wasn’t the lack thereof. Apparently there was a valued customer located in the market place that the store had promised to personally deliver a specially made garment to by the end of the day.

Although the task itself was hardly worth excitement, Kamilla was certainly relieved to leave the store a bit earlier than usual, but not before purchasing the clothing items she’d picked out that morning. A simple white blouse and a leather corset to add some variety to her wardrobe, nothing special but the very act of buying new clothes made the sorceress feel a little bit more pleased about her day. With a casual goodbye the sorceress made her way out of Red Diamond Fashion, into the ever bustling streets of Riverfall and down towards the warrens, parcel in hand and pack slung over her right shoulder.

The walk may have been slightly strenuous back when she’d first arrived in Riverfall but since then Kamilla had seemingly grown accustomed to the city and its odd winding pathways that hardly ever remained without a slope. It took a few chimes but eventually the sorceress arrived at the warrens and made the delivery to a middle aged woman, without incident.

Figuring that she was already there, and keeping with the day’s theme of spending money unnecessarily, Kamilla decided she may as well see what the many stalls if the warrens had to offer. The sorceress strolled casually through the busy marketplace not finding anything worthy of her interest other than a few interesting pieces of jewelry which she ultimately decided she could go without. It wasn’t until she passed by a small stall displaying several small wooden cages with animals that the sorceress finally stopped in her tracks as her brown eyes made contact with something that sent a spark of inexplicable excitement through her body.

Nearing the stall with a few overly eager steps, Kamilla arrived at the thing that had caught her attention, eyes wide with wonder. The stall itself seemed to sell a variety of odd creatures which she assumed were meant as pets, something the sorceress had never really[i] had any interest in, until now at least.

There in one of the cages, staring back at her with large bright green eyes that resembled a large droplet of water resting on a fresh leaf, was what looked like a thin, short haired, gray cat... with wings. She’d never seen anything like it and although the creatures wings were indeed intriguing Kamilla knew that the reason she was practically buzzing inside was because the creature inside the cage was predominantly feline. In the heat of the moment it didn’t even occur to her that her excitement could simply be due to the deceased, cat obsessed, mage Felius who’s memories and personality traits remained within her in fractured pieces... a side effect of wearing a maledicted item she’d worn once on Sahova.

”Excuse me... what kind of creature is this?... I’ve never seen anything like it.”

While her voice was filled with wonder as she directed her question towards the elderly man behind the stall, Kamilla’s gaze didn’t leave the winged feline’s for even a moment as the two of them shared a moment. While the other caged animals shifted about restlessly, it seemed the gray cat was content to simply stare back at the sorceress from its curled up state.

“Oh, that’s a yowlwing, very intelligent winged cat creatures... excellent pets... the best friend anyone could ever ask. Easy to care for... That one there is a young female, just barely past kittenhood, she is.”

While, usually, Kamilla would take everything the man said with a pinch of salt, being a salesman trying to make money, she found herself far too mesmerized by the creature and its features to care. The cat, or yowlwing, was slender in build though not sickly and had a very pointed predatory face that she found quite pleasing to look at. Reaching a hand out to poke a finger in between the wooden bars of the creature’s cage, Kamilla watched as the cat lazily got to its feet, not in any rush, before calmly sitting on its hind legs and gently nudging the offered finger with its cute wet nose, never once breaking eye contact.

”I’ll take her.”

It didn’t even occur to Kamilla that she had never owned a pet or that she was currently living in the Kulkukan Inn, all that the sorceress could think about was the instant bond she’d felt with the winged feline in the cage and the odd sensation of somehow simply [i]understanding
the creature’s body language as complacent but intrigued, maybe even as mesmerized by Kamilla’s presence as she was by it. Seemingly out of nowhere a name floated into her mind, one that the sorceress felt was perfect for the female yowlwing.

”Yennefer...”
