"That's an interesting necklace. What's the story behind it?" Madeira asked.

She smiled sweetly at the young sailor as she leaned against the railing of the Bellipotent. The sails were unfurled and the ship was slicing through the blue waters at quite the clip. The tailing ends of her rough chignon billowed about her face, and she struggled to hold the pages of her red notebook flat. The wind pushed the long skirt of her green dress hard against her body, and she noticed the sailor's shy brown eyes following the line of her crossed legs before he looked her in the eye.

"You mean this?" He lifted a leather cord off his sun baked chest with a sudsy hand. Dangling off the end was an enormous tooth. It was as long as her smallest finger, thick and flat, had a serrated edge and was almost a perfect triangle. The sailor (what was his name? Daniel, Damien?) let it drop back to his chest, where it dangled over his section of scrubbed floor like a dowsing rod of misery.

The boy couldn't have been older than sixteen. His face was a mess of acne scars and freckles, and he had a self-conscious sweetness about him that seemed at odds with his tall, toned sailors physique. His hands were red and raw as he scrubbed the deck within an inch of its life. He tended to get his work done faster and with more vigor when she was nearby. Something the others noticed and gave him endless shyke for. Especially as she was not only a skinny weakling who showed less skin than the average nun, she was also a creepy kind of witch.

But, to be fair, it was a long journey and she was the only living female on board.

"It's a shark tooth", he said proudly, dipping his bristly brush in a bucket of foaming water and forging forward with his attack on the scuffs and dirt. "A Great White. My last ship harpooned one off Syka. We all got a tooth that day."

Madeira's eyes followed the swing of the pendant with interest. In her hands her red book felt heavy with the layers of ink circles drawn and crossed out and attempted on its pages. A shark was certainly an exotic creature, and perhaps even had the kind of potential a new Maledictor like herself could coax out. She wanted it. She wanted to try, and this was too good an opportunity to let it pass by. But how could she convince him to give her the tooth? She bit her chapped lip and glanced around, seeing the small crew were absorbed in their own tasks and were paying no attention to the two of them.

"That must have been a harrowing! I've never seen a shark, but I've seen artwork of them. You and your crewmates are incredibly brave to tangle with such beasts. But I bet if I could catch you on your quiet hours you'd have a lot of stories like that to tell." she shivered dramatically and laughed, opening her smile into an simmering admiration.

He didn't look up, but from beneath his unkempt hair she could see the beginnings of a blush at the flattery.

"It was nothing. They did most of the work..." he was mumbling to the floor.

"A modest hero? Now I've seen it all." she teased, watching his ears burn all the brighter for it. "Lets talk when you get off so I can hear more of your adventures. I know a great place nearby that serves the best salted pork on the whole ship."

Now it was his turn to laugh. He even paused in his furious scrubbing to beam a smile at her. "It's a date. I even have a thimbleful of rum rationed."

"Wow, lets not get too crazy."

They both stifled their sniggers as one of the crewmen walked by lugging several dozen kilos of nautical rope. And in the brief pause Madeira let the mirth simmer down, and her voice became contemplative as she let her gaze wander to the sparkle of the sun off the ships frothing wake.

"You're very lucky, you know. Back where I come from, bones from the ocean are considered good luck. You gave one to loved ones as a gift before long journeys. It means 'safe travels'." She glanced back to him as if just remembering he was there, and tried to summon a pretty blush. But her body was working against her, and with the lie on her tongue she couldn't work up any colour to her cheeks.

Moving to plan B, she cleared her throat and looked down to her book, giving her time to pull her dijed forward from the bed of her tongue. With a concentration that made her palms sweat she infused it into her words.

"It's just some silly superstition", she smiled tightly, and pushed an emotional response into the air between them. When she looked him back in the eye she could feel the meter of space between them like an incredible chasm, as she struggled to feed him a mental response that was the exact opposite of her words. She twisted the assurance into uncertainty, in an effort to make him doubt what she said.

The boy looked up at her long and harp, his brows threaded in a concerned line to see her so sad. A hand travelled up to the tooth and stroked the serrated edge, and he bit his lip. She watched all this from her peripheral vision, her blue eyes turning back out to sea as if in silent contemplation.

After a moment she watched his distress twist and change as an idea that was not truly his own sparked in his eyes. "Um, why don't you have mine?" he smiled with boyish charm as he reached back behind his neck and untied the lace.

There was no need for Madeira to fake her shock. She was surprised her ham-handed efforts of suggestion had actually worked.

"Daniel! That's not necessary."

"No, I want you to have it. So you'll be safe..." He smiled at the floor, embarrassed but obviously pleased with himself. "Besides, there's more than just one shark in the world. I'll catch another someday."

Madeira reached forward and let him press the tooth into her palm. Her smile was genuine as she said: "Thank you. This is very kind of you."

But as his mind was spinning with thoughts of her and her gentle words, her mind was turning in darker waters

33rd of Summer, 518

Three days later Madeira was in her cabin with her back pressed to the wall and her red book open on her lap. Tongue between her teeth she was twisting an inkstick in one hand and the shark tooth in the other. All the other inhabitants of the cabin were fast asleep, Bird in his cage and spooks on her pillow. All except one. The sleepless ghost of Emma Chamelle was peering into the tin mug at Madeira's side with a frown on her scabbed lips.

"Why do you have a cup full of hair?"

"It's for an experiment."

"Who's hair is it?"

"Mine."

"Why is the cup full of your hair full of water too?"

"It's for an experiment", Madeira reiterated patiently. With an annoyed huff she scribbled out the design she had been sketching in her book. Emma was silent for a moment, but a moment was all she got. The girl opened her mouth to ask another question.

"Why don't I show you?", Madeira cut her off a little desperately. "Here, have a look."

She held up the little mug she had stolen from the kitchen so Emma could better see. Indeed it held several locks of blonde hair tied together with string. And though the ghost couldn't smell it, a faintly metallic scent rose from the clear fluid it was floating in.

"I'm preserving the hair, to make it tougher and prevent it from breaking or fraying." Madeira explained, stirring the fluid with a finger. "It's water, a little bit of lye and oil. I'm going to use it to make something special."

The girl digested all of this with her brows knitted and her bottom lip pushed out. She looked at the tooth and back to the hair, then to the dense scetches of endless circles in the red book.

"That's really weird, Maddy."

"I know sweetpea. Go play over there and I'll show you when it's done, ok?"

Once the ghost was suitably preoccupied with the duck toy on the other side of the small room, Madeira turned back to her book. She started another design, dragging the ink slowly across the paper in a perfect circle. But what should she fill it with? She turned the tooth over endlessly in her fingers, feeling the smooth, bleached bone against her soft skin. It was important to consider intent when making a fetish. Her Malediction teacher taught her that ages ago. The memory rose with a stab of pair, but she stuffed it back down to the recesses of her heart.

So who intends to wear it? Allister, she decided immediately. Her bondmate should be the one who wears the first fetish she made herself. Unless the fetish ends up cursed, she thought sourly. Then it will go straight into the sea.

But now that she knows who it is for, what did she want out of it? This question was harder. All she knew about sharks were that they we're powerful, dangerous predators. If she wanted a more refined ability out of it she would have to do more research on the beast it came from. But she would also need more skill as a maledicator in order to use that knowledge. She rubbed the knuckle of the hand still holding the tooth to rub the socket of her eye, like she might dislodge her frustration if she rubbed hard enough.

But something as simple and attainable as power might still be worth it. Allister was getting more involved with his combat abilities, she reasoned. And she could guess why. In the year they'd been bonded they were learning to orbit each other. Madeira had her sphere of influence, which involved people skills and self control. Allister had his physical arts and his wild, attention-drawing ways. Whether purposeful or not, they were learning not to mirror each other but to complete each other. They were everything the other lacked, and together they made a complete entity.

If power is all she could get out of the tooth, that was all her bonded would need. He could turn something raw like that and channel it into something worthwhile.

Decision made, she turned back to her circle. She needed something of significance here. She needed something that would give purpose to the dijed she wished to draw from it. But this process was more intuitive than logical. She had to trust her gut if this was to work.

Pressing ink to paper, she began to draw. At first it meant nothing, just shapes within shapes, done in a clumsy, unpracticed hand. She let her mind go blank, let her attention work down to nothing but the pen in her hand and the paper it rested on. The snores of her pets and the playful bubbling of Emma with her toy became a quiet background hum as she strove to live within that circle she was creating. This wasn't hypnotism, and this wasn't spiritism. There was nothing to press against, nothing she could change or twist. Malediction wasn't about embedding her own purpose but drawing out the bone's.

She put power into the ring of triangles like jaws, and into the bold swipe of her ink that crossed the circle and met on the other side in a point of sharp, driven focus. She made the lines thick and strong, imagining them holding the weight of the power she wished to draw from it. She settled deeper into a meditative state, the same one she used to make soulmist, and found meaning came easier there. She worked and worked, scrapped things she didn't like and started again. It had been nearly two bells before she resurfaced, dizzy and drained, to regard her final circle.

She had done it.

Madeira looked down on it with fierce pride. It was amateurish in it's construction, and at once blunt and obtuse in it's design, but it was hers. For the first time she practiced the art without someone else to hold her hand.

Madeira smoothed the book down on the floor so the spine would stay open on that page, then picked up the pairing knife beside her. Another theft from the kitchen, the little knife was more adept at cutting limes than bones, but it was small and sharp and fit easily in her hand. With it she first cut away the leather strap the tooth dangled from. It was quite convenient that there was already a hole drilled into the bone.

She pressed the tip of the knife into the tooth. The surface was smooth and glassy from its years as a young sailor's touchstone, it's colour bleached from years in the sun. She had to be vary careful now, or she would risk ruining it. So delicately, very delicately, she traced a circle as wide as its width across its surface. She would deepen the carving later, as soon as she was sure she had gotten it right. She held the knife from the blade, as close as she could to the surface for maximum control. She carved a millimeter at a time, making sure it was perfect before moving on. And the whole time her neck beaded with sweat as she drew all her focus onto her intent.

Power.

Making sure to follow her drawing exactly, she carved the design in lightly then worked on deepening it. The scratching of the knife became a constant background noise as she worked the magic deeper, making sure it would withstand time and wear. Yet even carving as deeply as she dared, the circle was not Immediately visible except as a indent where shadows collected. She blew off the bone dust, and considered it done.

She set the tooth aside, unactivated, to deal with the second part of her talisman. From the tin mug she extracted three locks of hair. There were three small bald spots hidden under her hair, where she had used a razor to scrap the hair off her head. She scrunched the wet locks in her skirt to remove the excess liquid. Then separating three sections from one lock, began to braid it together. She worked quickly, as she needed the hair to dry in the braid to set it. She worked one at a time, tying them together at the ends when they got too short. When the last lock was braided, she threaded the tooth onto the long rope before tying the ends together.

When it was done she held the finished necklace before her, running a critical eye over its construction. It was rough, but no different than something you'd see on any sailor. The blonde hair even looked like unusually fine, soft twine. Unless you knew what you were looking for.

There was only one step left.

A lifetime of self harm meant she did not flinch as she stuck the tip of her pairing knife deep into the blue vein that snaked across her soft, uncalloused palm. A ruby drop of blood welled immediately in the cut. As she held it out over the fetish she paused, wondering if she should pray to Dira for luck or thanks.

No, she decided, watching the blood travel snake-like across her open hand. Just this once, just for tonight, this is mine.

The fluid hit the malediction circle, soaked into the cracks and for a moment it stood in burning relief off the white bone. Madeira held her gift up to Leth's light and smiled.
